Hey guys. Just got my hands on my first rebuildable. Its a Smok TF-RTA with the quad coil base ( http://www.smoktech.com/atomizer/tf-rta )

I would like to build a coil around 0.1 Ohm. What is the best type of wire I can order from amazon to achieve this with this specific quad coil setup?

Thanks in advance and any other tips for a noob who has never built a coil before would also be appriciated :shades:

I recommend Kenthal A1 wire because it's really high quality and thick enough to handle the heat. Also if not amazon (I love amazon), you could try a local hardware shop or vape shop. My friend wraps his Smok rebuildable (TFV4) and uses 24awg.

Use Steam Engine. You'll be looking to make a 0.4ohm coil because then 0.4 /4 = 0.1.

Like Roxy mentioned, use Steam Engine, e.g. http://www.steam-engine.org/coil.asp?s=qp&r=0.1&awg=22&id=2.5

Just about to order the Kanthal A1 from amazon but im just trying to find out more about "AWG".

What are the advantadges/disadvantadges of going up/down in AWG?

The lower gauge (thicker) wire will heat up slower, and contain the heat for a longer period of time. Therefore, it requires more power to heat up. The higher gauge, is the opposite. Personally, I prefer a dual 24g, with 7/6 wraps and ideally 3 mm ID (inner diameter), which comes out at ca. 0.3 Ohm.

BTW, I order my Kanthal at http://www.temcoindustrialpower.com/product_selection.html?p=kanthal_a1

If you like complex builds, things like low resistance wire based fused/staple claptons could also work for this resistance. Just depends on you, what you have available and what you like. You can calculate most wires resistance before you even buy it. Using the gauge of the wire and the type of wire it is, there's almost always a resistance per foot rating for it you can easily find. Then calculate the amount of wraps you want and the coils diameter, there's calculators on websites like Steam Engine that you can find out how many inches/feet of wire this would use based on wraps, diameter, coil leg length, etc. Then you can figure out a resistance range for certain builds before you even build them. You can always twist wires together, or make specialty wire. This will lower your resistance in varying amounts, or you could use multiple pieces of wire (parallel wraps) for one coil. Two pieces of wire, five wraps. You get 10 wraps of a single piece of wire's surface area on the coil, but your coil's resistance will be SLIGHTLY higher than what you'd have if you only used five wraps of a single wire. It's a little more than half of the resistance it would be using a single wire when you wrap using wires in parallel.

Actually No.

I live in the United Kingdom where there is no requirement to "know this stuff" before buying an RTA. You can either find out this information before you purchase an RTA, at the same time of purchasing an RTA in store, or after purchasing and receiving an RTA. After thoroughly researching the capabilities of the RTA's on the market and deciding to go with the SMOK TF-RTA I would guess that means I selected the option of after as the mail man just put it through my letterbox and I dont know how to build it :D:D

Luckily I have litres of PG and VG, quite a few flavour concentrates, 2 other tanks and also 3 mods with plenty of batteries so my sub-ohm vaping will not be hindered whilst I now research and master the act of building my first coil.

I think you should start thinking out of the box. In life you will then learn that choices are not confined to one shape and are also not confined to the choices of others :shades:

You have no idea how fucking ignorant you sound, do you? Are you completely unaware that going into rebuilding can be fucking dangerous if you're as clueless as you are? It's not cool or edgy to act like this, go ahead and vent some batteries and blow your hand off. This is the reason vaping is about to get basically shat on in the EU. People like you.

Please, do yourself and the entire vaping community a favor and DO NOT go trying to build .1 ohm coils on an RTA when you have no idea about what the hell you're doing. I'm assuming you have no idea what amperage limits on a battery are, what the difference been continuous discharge and pulse/burst discharge is, what thermal runaway is, what battery sag is, the difference between unregulated mods and regulated mos using boost, buck or boost/buck DC-DC converters in terms of safety and use, that the amperage ratings on 99% of battery wraps is WRONG, or even how to build a coil to handle high wattage.

You start building .1 coils when you have absolutely no idea what you're doing, bad shit can happen. You get a hard short, you build coils with a resistance far too low and crank it up to over 150W and start pulling dangerous amounts of amperage off your batteries, there's all kinds of ways shit like this can end both badly for YOU, and badly for the entire world of vaping because when outsiders see uneducated vapers doing stupid shit that ends up hurting them, it's loading ammunition into the gun pointed at us ALL. Shit like this is what caused the TPD you're about to face where you live in the UK.

I'm a rude asshole, I know, but when you come off as uneducated and uncaring on a subject as you just did, especially when that subject is vaping, which is under the microscope EVERYWHERE right now, it's a pretty damned bad thing. Educate yourself, please. Put the TF-RTA down and don't even use it, go buy a sub-ohm tank with prebuilt coils and run them in the listed wattage ranges until you learn this shit. You're playing with fire when you do this blind, lithium batteries create a nice big wide open gap for danger when you don't know what you're doing.

many thanks neunerball for the info. I will now order the wires on amazon! If I stumble across any other issue I guess you will hear from my annoying a** shortly. If not, within a few days you will see some pictures of my first coil!

I cant wait to vape out of a coil that I have created myself. :D:D:D

Yes, this favour has already been executed. It is the specific reason you are here typing to me now :shades:

Once I have finished researching every aspect and asking all my noob questions I shall attempt my first coil build. Until then it will be much researching and sub ohming/

It would be quite foolish and dangerous to build when you have no clue what you are doing. The kids these days!

Get a good Ohm meter, in order to verify your build's resistance, before putting it on any mod. The Steam Engine can be used as a guideline only!

Unfortunately our planet is filled with human beings whose thought process resides inside of a closed box. But to them I can not give blame. They lack the intellegence to thoroughly research ALL aspects of building sub-ohm coils safetly. This means they have to start building at a safer ohm level to encounter and overcome the issues before they dare to build sub ohm. This is quite strange as all these issues and information to overcome them can be found with 2 magical things called a keyboard and internet connection. If there is any doubt there are these out of world planets where lurk these strange beings of intellegence which they refer to as forums to which I have now entered.

At times it is human beings like yourself without common knowledge and the skill of researching and learning from others that make simple folk like myself with basic common sense feel quite superior :shades:

If you consider a d-bag as somebody who has answered to myth with nothing but logical fact then you have just done nothing but proven your level of intellect.

Many thanks for the luck. I shall post a pic of my build once I get it going. Have a good day.

I think you should first get the knowledge and then buy the "advanced" gear

Thats a nice choice. I respect that.

I think I should buy the advanced gear first and then do the research after. This is the choice I have made.

That is the beauty of choice and mother natures blessing of different styles of learning.

Learn to spell intelligence correctly next time you want to pretend like you know shit about shit. As an electrical engineer, I feel VERY confident to say that when it comes to working with lithium batteries and high current electronics, common sense has NO place in the matter.

You come off as an uneducated fool, and people like you get roasted in this community because most people don't want to hold your stupid little hand and walk you through shit that you lack the capacity to realize you shouldn't do, like buy your first rebuildable device and immediately try to build .1 coils.

I imagine all it would take to make you feel superior is a candy bar and 30 minutes of cartoons. What you're doing isn't researching. Researching implies you actually take the time to look up information on a subject. What you're doing is not that, you're sitting here like a lazy fool expecting everyone else to do the research FOR YOU.

So by all means, keep posting your little swag sunglasses emoji's like this is funny to anyone besides you, but it isn't. You people are the cancer of the vaping community, you will be the death of vaping for all of us.

You know what's even worse than people like you? Vape shops that sell uneducated people rebuildable atomizers, then make no effort to teach the person what the fuck they're doing. Around here, unless you can display vaping knowledge first hand to an employee, you're limited to regulated mods 100W and under and aren't allowed to buy any rebuildable. If you want a rebuildable, you either have to prove to them you know what you're doing or you have to sit down with one of them and let them teach you about rebuilding and safety.

This is enforced at a LOT of vape shops for a reason. Beginners with no experience and virtually no knowledge of electronics have no place building very low sub-ohm coils or using powerful mods. A year ago a vape shop sold someone like you an unregulated series box. I know those are big words and you have no idea what they mean, but long story short the idiot threw a .1 build on it and vented the batteries IN THE STORE. The guy got second degree burns on his hand from holding onto it trying to 'save' it because he was clueless. That vape shop later ended up closing its doors because most people no longer wanted to go to a place that carelessly sold products to people who had no business using them.

Why the hell would you even want to build a .1 ohm coil on a regulated mod that doesn't even have 200W of power? Another sign you have no idea what you're doing. If you were building framed staples or some specialty type of wire that basically was low resistance only and had no other way around it or were using an unregulated mod like a parallel box, I could see wanting to build that low. News flash, if you want power, which I'm assuming you do, there's other ways, sometimes even BETTER ways, than building as low as you can. Focus on other things besides s1ck cl0udz br0, I'm almost certain that's what you want and at your beginner state it's not a good idea to go down that road. With your strongest mod, the X Cube II, it's 160W before updating, 180W after. If you're looking to get the most out of your mod power wise, build in the .3-.5 range on an X Cube II. This way you can actually use high wattage and get near the full output voltage power as well, it's also not going to be as hard on your batteries.

You show your ignorance in this comment, you make it sound like your trying to be responsible. But above you state you want your first EVER coil build to be at .1 ohm that's as low as most regulated mods will even go you are basically starting with extremes. Most people will start around .5-.6 ohms, but not you, you want to go to the extreme without knowing anything about safety. You didn't even know what AWG was. I don't even want to think about what batteries you are using. BTW researching every aspect like you said will take a very long time there's a lot to learn and it's not always simple to figure it out. Another part of your ignorance is that you want to start out with four coils it's like your trying to learn how to drive with a Ferrari instead of Toyota camry or some other basic car. Try a single or dual coil to start with. Lastly your responses when people try to tell you that you are going to blow your hand/face off make you seem very smug and show that you aren't listening.

There's no point to ACTIVELY TRY to build .1 ohm coils on a regulated mod unless it's a fucking 300W mod. You can build in the .3-.5 range and get more power out of your wattage settings and actually be safer about it as well. Buck isn't going to save you in a dual 18650 mod, just because the output amperage is lower than the amperage draw off the cells doesn't mean the draw off the cells still isn't exceeding their continuous limits. 180W at .1 is going to be fucking nearly 43A. Then after sag, with the output voltage being at 4.24V (slightly higher than the maximum voltage of one cell) at the 180W/.1 range, your input voltage with two FULLY charged batteries AFTER battery sag is going to be around 7V. Yeah, that's the thing about lithium batteries, they sag internally, and the more power you're drawing off of them (I.E. higher wattage), the harder they sag. If your input voltage was the true 8.4V of two fully charged batteries, the buck system at .1/180W would have your input amperage draw off the batteries at 21.5A or so, and the output at 43A or so. But since they've sagged down to 7V, your draw is going to be around 26-27A.

Here's another thing, 95% of 18650 batteries have a max continuous discharge rating of 20 amps. I don't care what your wraps say, I don't care what anyone else says, that's the MAJORITY average. Some cells, like the Sony VTC3/VTC4 and LG HB6, can do around 26-28 amps continuously. Battery wraps are either lying 99% of the time, or they're displaying the pulse/burst rating. There isn't one 18650 or 26650 battery that can hit the number 30 in terms of continuous amperage discharge. There's some, like the VTC3/4 and HB6, that come REALLY close, but none can. So with this build, .1/180W/4.24V/26A pull, you're either going to be over your batteries continuous amp ratings and you're risking thermal runaway, or you're stressing them to their limit. This is JUST when fully charged, the second your batteries drop blow around 92% capacity this will get MORE and MORE dangerous, the amperage you draw will RISE, and the danger INCREASES.

Don't build fucking .1 ohm coils, just don't. Learn what you're doing first.

It's not even like .1 ohm coils do anything more for you the only time I get that low is if I'm trying some crazy build with a shit ton of wire that ends up being very thick. Most of my builds come out to .2-.3 the lowest is .15 unless like I said it's some crazy build. And even then I'm only running them around 100 watts unless it's a series build. Listen to MNaumov92 he knows what's he's talking about.

Thanks for your suggestion but I choose to not learn how to spell as I have a spellchecker to correct misspellings and typos but unfortunately you are not important enough for me to even bother using it. My apologies that the feelings are not mutual.

Whether you are an electrical engineer or the president of the united states it does not change fact and logic. Trying to argue around this really shows the community your low IQ level

So just to confirm, in your simple little brain, me creating a single post on vapingunderground has led you to the conclusion that I have not done any research and im "sitting here like a lazy fool expecting everyone else to do the research FOR YOU"? This single post is concrete evidence for your tiny brain that I have not participated in any research before or even after joining this forum? Have you asked me if I have researched? No? You just came to that conclusion with no fact? Wow......, amazing. I definately will not be taking your word for ANYTHING that concerns my safety. I think it would be quite dangerous to take advice from an "electrical engineer" who comes to conclusions via assumptions instead of fact! I see that you posess a thought process that is not at all logical and does not understand the concept of fact which is probably the rason for us engaging in this discussion. Stick to electrical engineering mate. Seriously. You are making a clown out of yourself.

Maybe to you, your common sense does not include researching. Maybe it has to be suggested to you by a third party for it to click but as I have a higher level of intellect than yourself researching is very much common sense for me when dealing with something potentially hazardous. I dont need a third party to explain that to me.

You literally remind me of all the engineers and scientists that kept blabbering about the plane never being able to fly, its a disaster, it will never work............ Then it flew

I dont need a third party to explain that to me.

You literally remind me of all the engineers and scientists that kept blabbering about the plane never being able to fly, its a disaster, it will never work............ Then it flew

I'm not assuming anything, the thing you like to say a lot, common sense, I'm using it. Common sense tells me that people on a forum asking questions about things they do not know or understand means they do not know about it. If they do not know about it, they couldn't have researched it. My god, your stupidity is legendary.

Here's the very definition of research: the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.

I'm sorry that I intimidate you so much, and you're making a laughing stock out of yourself. You do not have a high IQ, nobody with an IQ worth anything of note would present themselves in such an uneducated manner while acting like it was both OKAY do to so, and do it so arrogantly. I paid over $500 for an IQ test and while I won't boast about my number, I will say it's greater than 150. If you want to call me unintelligent, by all means go ahead. If it makes you feel better about your tiny little penis and lack of life accomplishments and education, go for it. You need something to help you work through that. IQ means intelligence quotient. You want to say I have a low IQ, but you do it in a manner that makes yourself look stupid. Meaning you don't even know what IQ means. The irony. Common sense is common sense, education and common sense are two COMPLETELY different things. Not that you would know that, you've displayed the amount of intelligence a 5th grader would have. Also, unless you're over 100 years old, I can't remind you of 'engineers and scientists' that said planes would never fly, as you didn't exist when the plane first flew.

People with high IQ's can act like smug assholes, but they don't act like smug assholes whilst clearly lacking immense education about the subject in discussion. People with high IQ's like to learn and they also know when they lack information on a topic. They also have high amounts of pride, meaning they generally don't go on forums and ask questions whilst making a laughing stock out of themselves, they would study the topic at hand until they knew enough about it to converse about it in a social setting. I would know, you wouldn't. It's cute you tried to pretend like you did though, sorry sport, maybe you can go to ECF and fool them!

I made this for you. There's some REALLY big and scary words in here you may not understand. It may make you cry, it may scare you. But be a big boy and get through it so you don't hurt yourself and hurt vaping as a whole. None of what I said are assumptions, I've listed electronic facts, and also facts about the way you're acting. Asking questions is not research, research means YOU take the time to look things up YOURSELF. If you had researched this as well as you like to pretend you have, you wouldn't be as ignorant about vaping as you've displayed. But it's really cute that you think anything you're saying is bothering me or making anybody take your side, you're literally providing me with laughter and entertainment right now. You're a child, mentally and probably physically as well. I'd venture to say you didn't buy your first RTA, you probably got mommy or daddy to buy it for you because they caught you smoking and you cried hard enough. Please stick around the forum, we need idiots like you to laugh at. By the way, if electrical engineers like me didn't exist, you wouldn't even have vaping. So please, continue to bash my profession all you want while ironically using products created as a result of the profession. You fucking idiot, LOL.

I sat here and typed over 20,000 characters to help educate you, over double the forum limit. I'm sure you'll continue to desperately use terms like 'low IQ' and 'common sense' to make yourself look smart in response to this. But this isn't Youtube, you poor misguided soul. This is a place we will laugh at you whilst making you feel like the uneducated fool you are until it drives you away or you nut up and learn like a human being. You are a fucking tumor, please read this because people in your state of lacking education about vaping need to.

Isn't it funny how people that bring intelligence into a conversation are usually the ones lacking it

Typically intelligent people don't need to bring intelligence into a conversation by just talking about it when they can actually display it in real time. Not that people like him would understand that.

I want to call troll so badly, only because I can't get my head around this level of pompous idiocy.

MNaumov92, I just wanted to say thanks for that write up. That's good shit. Even if this jackwagon doesn't take anything from it, know that I did.

That's why I made it, I appreciate you for actually taking the time to read it, I have a thread dedicated solely to it as well.

Thank you for posting such an informative post. I recently purchased a SMOK TF-RTA and am having a really hard time learning how to build the coils. The guys at the shop I bought it from did not prepare me for the complexity. I have been reading and watching online videos, but I am somewhat worried about the vape arching and exploding. I usually only vape at 45-50w. Anything higher than that is too much. I am more interested in flavor than clouds. I have tried the clapton wires, but they gave me a sample of the twisted clapton wires and they do not seem to wrap as nicely or heat evenly. I think I will go back to using the micro clapton wire until I am more comfortable with a larger wire. I have a reuleaux rx200 mod. I like my coils burning at 0.3 ohm. I will master this process one day. Thanks again for the wonderful tips and detailed explanation you provided.
