Any fellow Wounded Warriors here?

Hooah to all my fellow Veterans! I'm wondering how many of us members of VU are also wounded warriors? If you were injured during your wartime service, and would like to share your story, I would love to hear it! I will start it off:

I joined the Army in 2000, bct Ft. Lost in the Woods (if you were there, you get it) and AIT at APG Maryland. I was assigned to COSCOM at Ft. Bragg, 659th Maint. Co., as a 63w Wheeled Vehicle Repairer (or, as we called it, "high speed parts changers" lol!).

I was deployed twice, first to K2 FOB Uzbekistan (OEF) and then to Seitz Annex, Baghdad Iraq (OIF). Only 4 months into my 2nd deployment, I was tasked with putting together a small convoy to retrieve some broken down HMMV's. We were targeted for attack by a solo insurgent who had daisy-chained a row of explosives under the already damaged road. Luckily he set off the remote detonation a little early, because otherwise we would have taken more casualties. As it was, myself and two of my soldiers were severely injured. This was on 09/09/2004. I spent the next two years going through 17 surgeries, my leg was amputated above the knee, and I had to relearn how to walk again using a prosthetic c-leg. I was awarded a Purple Heart and was the first female from COSCOM to receive the Combat Action Badge.

I am no longer in the Army, though I would give anything to still be in Uniform. Now my fight is against my own PTSD, for better Veterans healthcare and supporting the Troops still serving, as well as advocating for our right to Vape! I hope if you were injured while serving in any branch of the military, whether your wounds be visible or not, that you are able to share your story here. I have learned that just telling your wartime experience has a healing effect.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE, AND WELCOME HOME BROTHERS & SISTERS!

Thank you for your service bro.I was shot down twice, once on each tour. The first one compressed my spine and broke my left shoulder.I was taken to the 71st evac hosp in Pleiku. No xrays, grounded for 30 days, and given two bags of dope. One was a muscle relaxer, the other was painkillers.

That was 47 years ago,and now that I'm using the choice card,I will finally get fixed.I lost almost an inch and half on that crash,it still hurts like hell. Some assorted frag wounds from rocket attacks,( Russian 122mm).And of course, ptsd. For that,I smoke weed.I let the VA turn me into a veggie back in the early 80's with all of their meds....NO MORE for ptsd, and I told them as much more than once. And I still get my pain meds.I will not let them push me around any more.

I agree with that first statement wholeheartedly. Don't ask me why, but I miss it every day.

I'm currently at 100% disability due to PTSD, spinal damage, IBS, and a surgically "repaired" left leg and foot. My 2.5 year wait for the VA to acknowledge my disability was hell. Especially since I had done all the doctor related leg work for them, and I had been pushed out of the Army 3 months before my 8 year mark. Now that I've made it through that ringer and found proper help, life has improved. Not perfect but certainly improved.

The best advice I can give is talk. Many of us have seen things we can't wrap our brains around. We may never make sense of what we saw, but talking through it can be cathartic.

Hello brothers! I'm a former medic, medically retired 90% last year for PTSD, asthma, and IBS. I spent 15 months in Al Kut and two years in Korea. I joined in 06 and loved every minute of helping out my brothers and sisters in arms. Hope you all are doing well!

I guess I am very lucky because all my wounds did not leave me with disabilities of any kind. Received 3 gun wounds, a concussion and got caught in some barbed wire once :)) Not to mention minor scars left by a couple of frag grenades. Nevertheless I miss those days. I enlisted because I had nothing to hold on to as a civilian. I graduated from university but couldn't find a decent job. But military service made me feel myself useful, I knew I was doing something important. Moreover it is so much easier to engage in combat when you've got nothing to lose :)

I spent 16 years in both active Army and Army Reserves, was in Saudi Arabia, was there when one of So Damn Insane (Sadam) lit off one of his scud missiles, that scud for those of you who were old enough to remember or was there hit a barracks full of Reservists. I had just left after visiting a friend, we were a petroleum pipeline unit we refueled everything. I was some 400-500 meters from the building when it went up. I remember the flash and the explosion then everything went dark as the concussion threw me from what I was told 40-50 feet bounced around a bit. Of course I have no memory of these things. Spent some 6 months getting well, outside of some shrap metal a severe concussion a lot of bruising nothing broken....really broken. Had my L1-L5....uh....uh, shit can't EFFIN remember what they're called....disks! yes....disks are mucked up totally, outside that I'm good. Went back to work as a corrections officer, spent a total of 24 years in law enforcement, including my 3.5 years as an MP at Ft. Hood, Tx.
Have I seen shit....you betcha, I have found that I am very, very good at compartmentalizing, my brain is very good at moving shit I don't want to remember, hell even some shit I do want to remember! That said, also having a loving wife who was in the last WAC basic class AND was one of the 1st 200 women to go through and pass airborne jump school. For those who don't know....WAC stands for; Womens Army Corp. My wife is very understanding and is by far my best friend we are attached at the heart she and I 35 years now. Having family that understands or even tries to understand goes a long way in helpin one to get through the rough mental patches. Now that I'm damn near 60 years old I find that my mental acuity is as good as it once was. I am 100% due to injuries received AND also due to unemployability. Can't stand, sitting causes me problems....no need to go on, y'all get it, a great big thank you to ALL who served, as I like to say; All gave some, some gave all. Be well, stay safe, God bless, and....VAPE ON!
