"Brooks Stroman was one of those patients. The Kirkland father had a loose lithium ion battery, along with his keys, in his pants pocket on June 5th when he felt something sting his left leg. He thought one of his kids had thrown a water balloon."

"My keys were all melted. I'm constantly in pain," Stroman said Wednesday, more than two weeks after the incident. "When [my battery] blew up, my kids were literally 2, 3, 4 feet from me. It's ridiculous."

It's ridiculous = I'm Stupid, Now I am paying the price

"Stroman, meantime, is on medication and has his leg wrapped most of the day. He is limping and still in pain, making his job in landscaping difficult.

"People could go blind over this. It's close to their face," Stroman said. "For me, I don't think they should be made at all if they're going to cause damage like that."

I don't think they should be made at all if they're going to cause damage like that = Since I am so stupid and have no common sense OTHER PEOPLE who are NOT stupid and DO have common sense shouldn't be allowed to quit smoking.

People who are stupid never consider that they ARE stupid, they think they're normal, so the problem must not be THEM, it's whatever the product is with which they did some stupid thing.

Or, speaking of batteries... to a 9-volt battery. I've been urged, my whole life, to touch my tongue to a 9-volt battery, but given the spiteful glee in the eyes of the person doing the urging, I've given that a pass -- I don't really know what would happen, but it can't be anything good, to inspire that much malicious glee. And if anyone ever says "I dare you" to me, I just say, do it yo damn self if you think it's such a marvelous thing to do; my mama didn't raise any stupid chillen.

That's how you test a 9 volt battery.
By the amount that it bites you :)

I've often encountered household current by getting my fingers too far into those plugs, or touching one of the prongs when it goes in... it's like a second that feels like 10 yrs.

His biggest problem was he kept thinking. Uhhhhh, DUDE...knowing is much better than thinking. You'd think this was common sense, but that's not some common anymore.

Having taken both 347 and 600v jolts in my day, I think I learned enough to not put a battery near my face while I have keys up there next to my nose.

Thats how I always test my 9v! (It really isnt that bad)

I think that some may look at something like an 18650 and think of batteries like AA, 9v, etc. Of course, anyone who has looked at the actual specs realizes that they are a hell of a lot different than *common* batteries. Just like driving a car, some just dont understand the real world mechanics at work, and dont take them seriously until they get bit.

Personal responsibility is far too much to ask, so, something else must take the blame!

I hate reading things like this.

It is purely their own fault, but it gets plastered across the media-the amount of times I have been told I am going to blow up I have lost count of.

Also, his comment mentioning "I don't think they should of made it at all"- he wants batteries to no longer be made, due to carrying a loose battery, with keys and change, in his pocket?

I live in the UK so we don't have as many, but isn't that kind of like me shooting my balls off because I had a gun tucked into my trousers with the safety off, then asking for guns to no longer be made due to my stupidity?

People that stupid can't grasp, AT ALL, that there really are people with more sense in their heads -- it's almost supernatural to them, that someone is actually smarter than they are.

I suspect that a lot of the Tobacco ConTroll trolls are in that category; they keep going around saying such fucking obvious things as "cigarettes are bad for you" like nobody ever thought THAT before. The thing they NEVER say is, how exactly to get yourself free of them, once you've got that monkey on your back. A couple of the TC fools have come over to the THR side, for vaping and/or Snus, (Siegel, Godshall), but the rest of them seem to have this idea that if you don't SUFFER, you haven't really QUIT... or something stupid along those lines.

Then there's morons like this guy, who is convinced that just because HIS peabrain can't cope with the intellectual rigors of keeping batteries away from metallic objects, they just shouldn't be made! I'm not sure there's a  big enough for a fool that dim. (ETA: I was going to add that I'd hate to think how he reacts to chainsaws, but if he's this bumfuzzled by batteries, he probably runs screaming from kitchen knives.)

Surely though there has to be a point where they realise their stupidity lol? How far can it go?

You are right about the fact cigarettes are bad for you is pointed out, here with the NHS I must say they did try to help me quit smoking, but this was with Champix, which I know has some very nasty side effects and I don't think it should of been given to me in all honesty.

That is an odd view for them to have, that if you don't suffer, you haven't really quit. As we can all vouch for, I don't think anyone here suffered when they started to vape, and probably vaped while smoking-I am only saying that as I find most people I speak to started to vape whilst smoking, then slowly they didn't want the cigarettes and just vape now.

I would be too embarrassed to go to the media if this happened to me, as I would know it was my fault.

Maybe though there really are people this dumb, and due to this nothing with simple safety instructions-that you ignore, should be made.
Had to lol at your comment on the chainsaw and the kitchen knives :).

Yeah I quit gradually myself, thx to vaping, so I really didn't suffer much of the usual withdrawal -- just got to the point where I lit a cigarette and it didn't provide anything anymore, not even as much TH as I got from my vape, just a lot of stink, and running outdoors. Couldn't figure out why I was still bothering with the stupid things, so I finally stopped bothering. But I got the "but you're still addicted to nicotine" crap from my ex when I informed him i had finally quit cigarettes, and I told him I thought he was just mad because I didn't have to suffer to quit -- and I think my mom felt that too, given her 10 yrs of suffering in order to finally quit -- in her case, plain jealousy. It's a puritan mentality, and I STILL wish you Brits had put those idiots to the bonfire instead of sending them over here to propagate their insanity to N. America and the rest of the world. :D People who hate pleasure, who think that living means you have to suffer or it's just not worth doing... they're truly, deeply, irretrievably insane.

You quit the same way my Fiancee did with vaping, gradually getting to the point where you no longer need a cigarette which is fantastic :).

I see what you mean now, by people thinking you must suffer to have quit. I have also heard "But do you/you still use nicotine"?.

I explain yes, but believe it or not it is one of the chemicals in a Cigarette that is not actually a carcinogen. A lot of people do not believe this, but I now think they can continue to be ignorant, I used to show them on my phone it was not but didn't generally get a good reaction.
I think that it may well be people thinking along the lines of if you haven't had nicotine withdrawal, it doesn't count. I didn't really understand what you meant until your post, but now it makes a lot of sense (This wasn't your fault BTW, I am not always the quickest to grasp things lol).

I apologise for my ancestors sending them to you lol. I hope they are not too much bother.

Thinking you have to suffer to make something worth doing IS insane- and I gather resentment could also be a part of this as you mention your Mom, who suffered for 10 years while trying to quit.

It is a shame really vaping has only been around as long as it has been-when you look at the first E-cig and realise devices existed a long time ago, it does make you wonder why they were not made available to the public sooner.

I think the answer probably lies in the money that is lost to the big tobacco companies and Pharma companies with their NRT and Champix treatment options.

And that technology needed to catch up with the concept -- apparently when Mr Gilbert first came up with the idea in the early 60s, he did patent it, and BP and BT had a chance at it, but passed, because it just wasn't satisfying enough -- as is still very much the case with cigalikes, for most people. Plus the fact that it really *isn't* the nicotine that provides the tough-as-nails addiction, but nicotine combined with the MAOIs -- which may not have even been known about, in the early 60s -- think, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest -- ECT and frontal lobotomies were still very much part of treatment for "mental illness" at that point, they had NO CLUE about the biochemistry of the brain -- which is where addiction lives.

I also point out that nicotine is likely the LEAST harmful chemical in cigarettes... but yeah, that's a hard sell, with all the disinformation that's been spewed by TC. Which is absolutely just a scam, designed to allow BP to sell NRT. Which I learned the hard way is utterly useless.

It's a weird combination of a pinch and a tickle. And leaves a funky metallic taste in your mouth. It's not nearly as bad as household current. Everyone should try it once.

Yes, I gather then the technology to actually produce even a Cigalike would cost a lot of money, and isn't very satisfying just like a cigalike now.

Regarding the MAOIs, I know what they are, but not about the combination with nicotine causing addiction, I will have to do some reading on this.

Mental health treatment was very, very different in times gone by. My uncle was fine as a child, but when he hit adulthood, things went wrong, and he was diagnosed Paranoid Schizophrenic, his is very bad and he has been in a care home from around the age of 19 to now, in his 70's. (He is in no way violent or aggressive, this is another misconception that all Schizophrenics are violent, or have split personalities, he is a very gentle man who would never harm anyone-he simply can not look after himself).

I wasn't around when he got diagnosed, but apparently some of the 'treatments' he went through were horrendous- my family at the time did not know any different and assumed it was OK, as not as much was known about mental illness as is now. He never had a Lobotomy though thank god.

It is strange that even with evidence regarding nicotine being one of the least harmful chemicals in a cigarette is disputed by many people, and is most likely a scam so High cost NRT can be sold by big Pharma. I am in the UK, you can get stop smoking treatments on the NHS, and I have done so in the past myself, twice using the drug Champix without knowledge of how bad it actually is. If you want to do it yourself however, things like patches are very expensive.

Yes, it's always hit home with me that my own violent struggles with depression and anxiety, maybe even my alcoholism, would, in past times, have rendered me classed as a "lunatic" or maybe "hysterical female" (which used to be an actual medical diagnosis -- they thought women were "hysterical" because of their reproductive organs!), and most likely confined to one of the godawful lunatic asylums. Effexor has dreadful withdrawal, but I daresay it's a lot easier to deal with than ice baths, ECT, or a lobotomy, or even coercive restraint.

Tell me about it! That was one reason why, at first, I was more than a little skeptical about vaping -- I found "The patch" not only completely useless, it gave me heart palpitations and induced something very close to actual psychosis; still don't know if that was from the high level of nicotine (I have very little nicotine tolerance, even when I was a smoker), or the abrupt cessation of the MAOIs -- I suspect the latter, as I found WTA necessary to get rid of the strong cravings, despite my relative intolerance of nicotine. I was as surprised as any other smoker who finds that mimicking the actual action of smoking is a great deal more useful in smoking-cessation than any chemical ever devised, though WTA was what really sealed the deal for me. WTA without the physical behavior mimicry? Not sure that would have worked much better than plain nicotine.

welp, nobody ever said we were dealing with a smart person. lol

worse part is, the note 7 isn't even user error. it's a design flaw. I haven't seen an ecig with a design flaw. all the explosions are form misuse. It's like crashing your car and then blaming the car for it

excellent analogy btw.

Personally I think there is a responsibility with vapeshops to at least ask people to research 18650 technology. No brick and mortar shop, here in the UK has ever mentioned the difference between our batteries and the usual cells when I used to buy from them. My guess is there is a fair percentage of vapers who don't research and assume they have the equivalent of a big rechargeable AA.

It was only through forums that I learned the importance of using a quality charger, battery condition etc. Considering the bad press vaping gets due to battery ignorance, it just seems common sense to me.

A lot of vape shops are terrified that people will find out that they can buy vape stuff, and learn about vape stuff, online -- the internet is the competitor from hell. :D That's the vape shops that are more concerned about turning a profit than helping people, which is probably the majority. Hard to stay in retail without a profit.

I agree that more people should be better educated about battery safety. And I'm not even talking about vaping in particular. Im sure a lot of you have seen the news story about the guy who burned down his house because he disposed of 9V smoke dectector batteries improperly.

At the very least, there should be blatant warnings on the packages. Instructions. Something more than what's already there. I mean shit, we got smokey the bear for forest fires. Let's get lithy the ion LOL

Oh, dear...
So he shorted out the battery with his keys and blamed the battery?!?
To be honest I had a similar experience. Was in a hurry because I overslept and threw the battery in my wallet pocket.
Then for some reason decided to do the same with the keys to the house.
Went down the stairs. Got in the car and felt a sharp sting. My first thought was that the keys are somehow poking me.
Reached to the pocket and wiggled it a bit. Then felt heat! And it struck me: Battery + keys = bad combo.
Quickly reached in the pocket and pulled them both out at the cost of a blister on my index finger but since then that's a lesson learned.

Pic of the battery below. You can see a dot.
