Hohm Slice Review

After a long wait on the pre sale I received 1 of the 2 Slices I ordered. Sadly, after vaping on it for about 10 minutes the fire button started to stick. I called Hohmtech and they were very responsive. They emailed me a pre paid label and off it went back to Hohmtech. After they received my mod I received an email stating that it would be another 7-10 days before they were able to fix my mod. My red one had also been delayed due to problems with the dye they used for the mods. I expressed my dissatisfaction and to my surprise I was transferred to the Director of Operations Ben. He was very cordial and asked me what I wanted. I said I just want what I paid for, a black Slice and a red Slice. He asked if it was ok to send out 2 brand new mods and I said sure. While I am happy with the way Hohmtech handled themselves I feel like I have to bring this up in a review because ultimately it is a con. Ben explained to me that 2% of the buttons were made to thin and as a result of that they were getting stuck under the mod and they needed to be replaced, Two days later I had both the black and red Slice in hand.

As you can see they are great looking mods. I think the red is especially bright and vibrant while the black has an understated classiness to it. The fit and finish on them is very nice. When I first received both mods the battery doors were a little clicky but they have broken in and are quite solid right now. The chipset is the same exact one they use in the G2. So if you like the G2 then you're going to love the Slice. It performs the same exact way and has the same menu system. The Slice uses a 26650 battery and goes up to 101w. It comes in 2 variations, the SE or Standard Edition and the LE or Limited edition. The LE has 3 amp Charging and I believe the SE has 1 amp charging. I never charge my mods internally but I tried it out in the Slice and I was able to go from 0% to 100% in 90 minutes. Also the 3 amp charging is a bit of a moot feature because as far as I know there are no 3 amp charging bricks as of this writing. Those are the only internal differences between the 2 mods. Externally there are some branding differences but nothing that will make you pick one over the other.

Unfortunately there is no 18650 adapter available. Battery life is subjective and has a lot of x factors but for me I can chain vape this mod for 3 or 4 hours in TC mode at 65w and 500f. TC mode is where Hohmtech products really shine as they can TC any material. The best way to vape this mod is to put it in xxx mode and adjust the FSK Curve. The menu system has a bit of a learning curve but it's not steep at all. I think most people that don’t like Hohmtech products have a problem with the menus and dialing the mod in.They wind up getting frustrated and sell the mod or put it away. Take your time getting to know this mod and you will be glad you did. Of course it has all the traditional settings for TC like SS, Nickel, Titanium, as well as non traditional TC settings like Kanthal and Nicr. TC wit Kanthal you say? Yes it does Kanthal in TC quite effectively. Forget everything you know about Kanthal not being able to do TC and just try it. Trust me it works.

Getting back to the mod it has 4 buttons, a menu button, a fire button, and a +/- button. The usb port is under the +- buttons. You can access the regular menu by clicking the menu button 3x quickly. By doing that you will be able to access all the different coil materials as well as xxx mode and digital wattage mode. Hold the menu button down and then hold down the +- button and you can access the Insanity menu. In the Insanity menu you can access the upgrade port, FSK Curve, Screen rotation, Auto TC Control, and Firmware Version. The most current firmware is version 1.2.3 . One important thing to remember that I know frustrates a lot of new G2 owners is to always remember to hit the fire button before attaching a new atty. This resets the resistance back to zero so when you attach a new tank you get a proper reading. If you don’t do that you will get a damaged atomizer message.

The mod feels great when held and has a nice heft to it. The paint seems real nice and durable but I would really like it if it had a silicone sleeve available. The mod comes with a usb cable as well as a great instruction manual that you can tell is written by people who vape. So far all of my tanks sit flush with no gaps. While this mod vapes beautifully in all the pre set modes I would strongly suggest getting to know xxx mode and the FSK Curve. It really does a nice job with any kind of coil. I have to say that once all the issues were worked out that this is one of my favorite mods. It’s like having the performance of a G2 in a much more compact, attractive package. I love my G2 but my Slice is just so much prettier. If this mod got lost or was stolen I would definitely run out and buy another. If you decide to buy this mod lets hope all the kinks are worked out by then. Oh yeah the batteries, If you're going to buy this mod I would stay away from the yellow MXJO’s. They just don’t perform well in this mod. I would go with the Basen or Hohmtech batteries. They both perform on the same level for me. All in all I think Hohmtech is doing a great job innovating new products especially at this price point. God knows in the past I have spent more money on mods that haven't vaped nearly as well. The SE goes for $59.95 and the LE goes for $69.95. As I said earlier if I had to purchase this mod again I would probably save the $10 and get the SE since I really don’t charge internally. Well I hope this little review was helpful and feel free to ask any questions. If I can I would be happy to help.

A few more pics with different tanks:

UPDATE:

My black Slices paint job doesn't seem to be holding up to well. The red seems to be a lot more durable. I have used both mods pretty evenly and the black seems to be worse for the wear. Here are a few pics. Just a note on the screens. Those are not scratches. The factory screen protector is still on them. I tend to keep them on until they fall off.

Someone really needs to do a silicone sleeve for these mods.

Awww man, I just picked up a scratch from screwing on a mod, that's about it though but that scratch looked like a chip just came off. Now looking at your black makes me worried about mine. My buddy with the red slice just commented that his paint wasn't very durable. This sucks, now I am glad I went G2 instead of Slice crazy.

Great review, Jack. Have you tried using the 18650 adaptor from your stout in the Slice? You do have a stout, don't you?

Thx man, appreciate that. No I never wound up picking up a Stout. I went for another Classic. I just love that Flask form factor.

Ah yes that right. I don't remember where I saw it but supposedly the 18650 adaptors like the one in the stout will work in the Slice.

How has this held up?
Same firmware as the G2? Or different and they have given more love to the G2's firmware updates?

Got enough multi cell boxes and want a single 26650 so I was thinking this would knock out trying the fsk chip and a 26650 in one shot.

Thanx

It's by far my most used and favorite mod. They fixed all of the issues like the clicky battery door and sticky firing button. They also say that they have improved the paint. Even though I have one with bad paint I still love this mod. I will warn you while this is a great mod and I do love it don't expect a G2 build quality because it's just not there. If you want G2 performance in a much nicer and comfortable form factor then you will love the Slice. Plus I think it's got like a 500 day warranty and we all know HT has great CS. So far the best 26650 batteries I have used are the black Basens and the HT batteries. Mooch says the Ijoy 26650's are the best and they are next on my list. Since I've gotten the mod I think there's been 3 updates so HT is pretty good with the updates.

Nice, thanx for the update... I'll have to pick one up. What would you say is lacking in build quality vs the G2? Just overall fit & finish but nothing that has a cheap feel?

For $60, if I get 500 days out of it, I've more than got my money out of it :)

I'd say just the paint.
My red L. E one, only issue is the paint weathering on it. It is the same thing as the g2 with a different body using one 4.2v battery.

The G2 is a carved out of chunk of metal. It's built like a brick shit house. I mean Ben from HT did a burn out on it with his Beemer and it still worked! You can't do any burn outs on the Slice. Lol. To be fair though it's not poor build quality it's just not as great as the bullet proof G2 but definitely better or on par with most Chinese mods. The paint was the worst part for me but like I said they claim on the 3rd run they're using a more durable paint. So to answer your question honestly I would say it's the finish and materials used that are not as good as the G2. It definitely does not feel cheap. Hope that helps. Feel free to ask me any questions. I will always answer as honestly and straight forward as I can.

You can seriously beat a G2 with a 16oz hammer until your hand gets tired and it will still function as sew, I highly doubt you could do the same with the slice.

True, the G2 should be called the Hillary Mod because it could survive a hammer beating. Lmfao.

Teflon pants suit hillary...

I have heard about the burnout and while impressive I have yet to run over a mod :) All I need it to do is push power when I hit the fire button and the chip to not fail in a short time.
Sounds like this is on my list to pick up, thanx.

I must say, this review is what made me flip the switch and order one of these and I am glad I did.
These things are awesome!
I had the paint start coming off of my fire switch but it seemed to hold up well on the device, that is until it fell off the railing on my deck.
It dropped about 5 feet and lit in the landscaping rocks and put a nice little ding in the side. From there the paint started coming off like mad but I expected it to.
I ordered another because it bothered me so bad.

But...
There is a bright side to this story.
I took the dinged up one apart and removed all of the paint, sanded it (for what seemed like hours) and then polished it with a dremel tool.
I put a BMW emblem that I had in an old Tie Tack from my days in the car business and put it where the ding was.

I think the unpainted one is beautiful, much better looking mod IMO. Great job on that. Wonder if you can order & ask them not to paint it?

Yeah, they should offer a raw version like Asmodus does with the Minikin V2. Great idea

I sent them a photo and the guy replied back that he had shown it to the crew and they posted it on their Facebook page.
