Modifying the iStick bending adapter to make a quick-release 510 connector

The iStick bending adapter is really a great, cheap little device that's begging to be hacked into something else. Yesterday I bought me a whole box of them, and today I turned them into true, useful quick-release 510 adapters for all my mods. Check it out:

It's such a useful little device! No more screwing / unscrewing atomizers.

If you're handy with a file and a little careful, it's a really simple hack. Here's what you need to modify:

Of course, you'll need to separate the base and the atomizer holder first. To do that, all you have to do is punch out the hinge pin with a drift (or with a small blunted nail) and a hammer.

Also, depending on your mod's 510 connector, you may have to reduce the diameter of the base of the bending adapter's pin, or reduce its height, which can also be done carefully with a file (read: you don't need a lathe). For instance, here's what's needed to make it fit on a Vapor Shark rDNA 40:

Finally, again depending on your mod, you'll want to modify, or plain file away the two alignment tabs under the base - which are designed specifically to fit the iStick's slots. For the Vapor Shark rDNA, here's what you need to file away:

It takes about an hour of somewhat careful work to modify the bending adapter's base and pin cleanly, and about 5 minutes for the atomizer holder part. So if you only have one mod and a lot of toppers you want to swap, it's not very long to hack a bending adapter per topper and fit it permanently.

I hope this'll inspire you to make your own :)

Pretty cool, but it looks like it makes the tanks quite a bit taller ... and some are already tall enough! LOL

Yeah, it does add about 9 mm to the height of the topper. But if you think about it, it's about as small as it can be, considering that it stacks two 510 pins (its own and the topper's).

This said, the Dovpo E-LVT and E-Mech mods, with their raised atomizer socket, make almost any topper look tall. Add to that the hefty size of the Big Dripper, and the whole does tend to look humongous, even without the bending adapter :)

Yeah, I don't really care for huge mods personally, 9mm is a substantial height addition in my mind. If someone wants a quick change or quick release and doesn't mind the size, this is an awesome idea and very well done!

BTW ... A year ago I was looking for something exactly like this so that I could just carry around 3 or 4 prefilled tanks ... I have since taken to carrying 3 or 4 mods with the tanks "permanently" attached ... :D

Still, this is an excellent write up for those that need such a solution!

Well, I too have been looking for a long time for a proper quick-release atomizer connector. At some point, I gave up waiting and made a first version - a sort of clearomizer socket - to swap clearos quickly. You can see it here:

It's butt-ugly, but It worked very well, and I used it for a while to quickly swap between a few dozen iClear30s with different flavors I had lying on the coffee table.

But then, one day, the missus got very angry at the mess on the coffee table, and told me to clear off all my shit, or else. That's when I started dripping almost exclusively. That instantly solved my quick flavor switching problem, and the missus is happy now :)

The only reason I made these QR 510 connectors out of iStick bending adapters is because I still have the problem of switching flavors when I drive and I can't drip. It's quite convenient in the car. I prefer switching toppers and keep only one mod in the car - rather than having several mods around, like you - because I'd rather have only one mod to worry about charging.

You are absolutely correct, it is butt-ugly, albeit very ingenious! Perhaps a redesign of something like it or some tweaking of the V2 could be a commercial product? Maybe through kickstarter? Just thinking out loud ... ;)

I do like the eVic, it was my first "advanced" mod, and exactly the device I was trying to setup with a quick changer. Glad to see that someone had figured out how to do it! My wife also had problems with bits, pieces, parts, tanks, juice bottles, etc. on almost every flat surface in the house. When she said she would rather have ashtrays laying around because they at least look "nicer", that's when I knew I might have gone a little overboard.

I use Russians and Kayfuns primarily, dripping is too much work for me to do regularly. I use my drippers when I am testing new flavors at the local B&Ms. If it tastes good in the dripper I buy 30ml bottles to fill a tank. I also use ekowool exclusively because it can be quickly and easily dry burned to try a new flavor. While carrying around 3 or 4 mods and extra batteries is a real PITA, I have gotten so used to doing it that I feel naked when I only go out with one mod and one spare battery! I'm not sure I could get used to a single mod with 4 tanks in my pockets ... LOL

Perfect. I did it to fit my cloupor mini and my kayfun on top. Although i wouldn't say it was easy. The center pin is very tightly fit and i had to file carefully a lot of metal.
I want to give you many many thanks. Totally briliant idea.
