"Dont abuse protects" error on new alien smok?!

Good evening everyone,
So I just bought a smok alien kit and was using the Q2 coil it had come with and all was fine. I then switched to try out the x4 coil but when I try to fire, it reads an error, "Dont abuse protects". I thought maybe it had to be updated so I went online to do so, after getting to the update page I saw there are 2 different versions for the alien, A & B. When I power mine on it says VB1.0.2. I think that is the newest version of B and so it can't be updated. Does anybody know what the problem might be and if it can be updated? Thanks!

Definitely a coil problem. I've gotten that error message when I had a short on one of my rtas.

I guarantee it's the coil. Take it out and inspect it. Then put it in nice and snug, don't over tighten it though. If that doesn't work it's a defective coil and needs replacing.

Same here. Only time I've had that happen was with a shorted coil.

This happens to me when I take an atty off and replace it with another one of lower resistance.... for whatever reason the Alien doesn't automatically recognize it as a new atty unless you fire it without an atty first, then it will ask you New Atty Y/N when you try to fire the new one. So if you were vaping a .5ohm coil at 60 watts and switch to a .2 ohm coil it's going to fire it at a higher voltage

^^basically what he said. Take the atty off the mod and hit the fire button. Then put the atty back on and fire again. Now it should ask you if it's a new coil.

I get this error from time to time using the RBA, and I also have the newer 'B' version.

From what I have read, it seems to occur when the resistance reads differently to what you set it at when you put the tank on. If it keeps happening, take the tank off, press fire, then put it back on, and select new coil. If it STILL happens, I would change the coil if everything is in place and correct.

Did the above suggestions fix the problem for you? I'm thinking of buying a new Alien, but I want to make sure I'm not buying something that is going to give me problems out of the box or later on.

In case he doesn't return...

99.9% sure he simply didn't click "Y" when it asked him if it was a new coil. He probably didn't even see the prompt. It took me a minute to notice it asks when you change coils.

I have 3 Aliens with ZERO mechanical or electronic issues. The paint was crap on one, and that is by far the most common problem I've seen. I've read of 2 people having very dim screens, and a couple have said their board died while it was just sitting on the table. Still far more folks are happy with theirs than not, from what I've seen. I certainly am, and I highly recommend it.

Thanks gakudzu for the reply. I've been wanting the Alien kit w/ the TFV8 in gold but now I want it in the new Rainbow finish.

No problem. I like the rainbow finish, too. Hell, I like em all tbh, lol. I have 2 gunmetal/black and 1 silver/silver. I switched the trim panels around so now I have gunmetal/silver and silver/black. I like stainless steel tanks, and switching the trim really made them matchy-matchy.

I actually preordered the SMOK Gx350 in rainbow, but they decided not to produce it with that finish. Bummed me out so bad I cancelled my order.

The Rainbow GX350 is not being produced? :gaah:That's the one I wanted most! Did they give a reason why? I hope they release the Alien kit in rainbow!

Not that I'm aware of. Same thing with the G320 Marshal, too. The rainbow tanks look silly without some rainbow on the mod, imo. I think they decided Purple would sell more, as they seem to have replaced rainbow with purple for both the 320 and 350.

I just found out the reason SMOK stopped the GX350 in rainbow. I was just told by one of the vape shops that SMOK was having too much trouble producing that finish so they decided to scrap it. :( However, they are still bringing out the Alien in rainbow. But not until late next month at the earliest.:wait:

Thank you all for the advice, this error message happened to me tonight when I was switching between my old tank and the new one. I thought I did something wrong but you all rock, the advice was spot on, took off tank, hit the fire button, placed new tank and it asked me if I had a new or old coil. Problem solved!

Hey all, newbie here.

It means you changed coils or tanks and it didn't register to give you the "New/Old" prompt. Unscrew the tank and screw it on again to get the prompt and you're good.

You might want to read a thread I started the other day. You might be having the same problem I did.

I have the same, if not multiple problems. Sometimes it reads don't abuse protects, ohm too low, and short atomizer. Not only that but the coil is an rba for the big baby atomizer/tank and was working fine while I worked out hot spots in my coils. I have another rta using the same coils, at the same ohms as well. The normal 4 coil head that came with my tank works fine, switch to the rba, and encounter multiple problems. I tried messing with the pin, taking the atomizer off, firing, and choosing the new coil which does nothing and for some reason it ohms out differently every time I take the rba out of the atomizer and put it back in. The threads are kinda jenky and it doesn't really feel like it's sitting right in the atomizer. Please help, this is extremely frustrating because I just got this rba and I don't want to be stuck on an old tank that I'm frankly pretty tired of. Thanks for any responses, it would be very appreciated.

You're not the only one to have issues with the rba decks on the smok tanks. Or others for that matter. I'd say it boils down to the electrical connection in the tank, between the deck, coil head connection. Can't offer too much help since I don't use subtanks with rba's but the 'don't abuse' is when resistance is too low usually. Meaning a short somewhere or bad connection.

I would get that from time to time when using the avocado rdta since it uses a long 510 center pin in the atomizer to go from the bottom, up through the tank section and up to the positive post on the deck. After removing it and cleaning it, wiping off any juice or anything that seeped inside the center pin of the atomizer and tightening it back in the problem went away.

Quite a few people had issues with resistance jumping, error messages etc using the smok rba heads and most of the fix attempts were short lived. For those I've seen complaining about it ultimately it ended up being a different tank or rta that solved the issue. I rarely had connection issues or do not abuse errors on my alien outside of the avocado, my other rda's and rta's worked fine. If I had to place bets on the culprit it's probably the tank rather than the mod.

Purely my opinion but I think any device/item built for a sole purpose works better than something with an optional swiss army knife option. For that reason I think there's liable to be less problems with an actual rta/rda designed for building on rather than an optional adapter and fiddling with it in a subtank.
