Burning feeling in throat

I started vaping a few weeks ago and have had nothing but trouble ever since. When I started all was fine but after 2-3 days I started getting a burning feeling in my throat. I asked a friend who had vaped for much longer what the issue could be and he told me it could be the coil that was worn, so I switched it out for a new one. After that all was fine again until 2-3 days had passed again and the same thing had happened. I stopped for a while and tried again (without switching out the coil) and it was still the same.

I'm using a Vape Pen 22 from SMOK and I'll supply as much info as I have on it:
The coils are 0.3Ohm coils, it has a 1650mAh battery and I've tried a variety of different flavors.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kind regards,
SavantCS

Possible sensitivity to PG or VG.
Could be the nic level is too high.

Forgot to mention that I smoke without nicotine. And then it would be weird that if I switch out the coils that it's fixed for a while?

Sounds like you're burning out your coils really fast. I've done that before, not sure how, but it seemed to happen most often with 80/20 juice. I think it was the thickness of the juice that caused a problem.

PG is quite a bit more harsh than VG. Perhaps a higher VG to PG ratio. I use 20pg/80vg. 30/70 should be fine for your style device.

I am curious though. If you don't use nicotine, why are you vaping on such a basic device? By that I mean, some people like to do tricks and some like clouds and some want big flavor.. This is just for my curiosity. I try to keep up to date on reasons people vape.

I'm using 60VG/40PG so I might try that out. As for why I vape, it feels relaxing for me. Life doesn't mostly go my way so when it doesn't it feels relaxing to stand by the window and vape.

try 100% VG juice and see if that has any effect.some people are very sensitive to PG.

My guess is it's not the PG because it doesn't happen right after he changes the coil. Could be, I guess.

The same exact thing happened to me when I first started vaping. It was the coils being burnt out. Like what was already said your probably chain vaping and burning the wick. I would replace the coils or learn how to make your own so you can change the wick whenever it gets burnt.

That's one disadvantage of the all in ones. You really can't customize them to your vape style. You might try putting 4 drops of distilled, bottled, or tap water in a tsp. (4% of 5ml) and filling the tsp with your ejuice and then putting that in your tank. This will thin your juice slightly so it wicks better, without increasing the PG which would make it more harsh on the throat. If you find it to thin, add 3 drops, it to thick, try 5 drops., so you may have to use some trial and error. I was rather conservative on the water. Here is a breakdown of drops per ml.
1ml = 20 drops (aprox)
5ml = 100 drops (aprox) = 1 tsp
15ml = 300 drops (aprox) = 1 tablespoon
30ml = 600 drops (roughly) = 1 ounce.
These are very close aproximations. I think it is actually something like 98.7 drops per tsp but how do you measure 0.7 drops? lol

If you take slow long puffs you can actually burn out the coil in a matter of only hours so if this is what you have been doing, try taking fast short puffs instead, and, like others have stated, wait long enough between puffs. If you decide to move to high VG juices like 20/80 or 30/70 you should wait even longer between puffs because VG is more syrupy so it needs more time to get absorbed by the cotton wick, and or you could decide to dilute the juice slightly with water, albeit using a higher VG juice generally also means less flavor and bigger clouds so to keep the flavor I wouldn't add too much water to that.

Vape on and vape well my friend, and hopefully you can keep up this relaxing hobby.

P.S. You don't have to justify your reasons for vaping to anyone but yourself

I think that mod might have issues pulling 100VG. It's one of those all in ones. Although adding a couple drops of water would work.

The clouds with/without tricks are just relaxing, like you make your own sky around you, under any roof

It is not smoking, it's vaping.

Do you smoke cigarettes? If not, maybe it's just the new experience of vaping that's irritating. When I stopped and started vaping, it irritated me everyday, usually by late afternoon. After a month or so, it stopped being a problem.

I don't mind telling others. It's quite interesting to know the reasons why others vape.

I actually do take slow long puffs. I'll try to dilute the juice with water a little. Other than that is there a vape that doesn't cost too much and that would be more suited for long slow puffs?

I diluted the juice as you said however now there's little to no vapor coming out (since it's a new coil I made sure to saturate it well before I tried).

EDIT: Doesn't seem to be the case anymore after another try. All seems fine for now, just gotta try it out a while longer.

Try a couple "pre-puffs" without firing the mod when you change coils too. To get the juice started through the wick a bit better.
Keep us posted about how it turns out.

Not sure what to tell you about long slow puffs on that mod. Besides adding that bit of water to help with wicking.
It's kind of a trade off.. inexpensive and dead easy to use or pay more and get more options and have to do a little learning. Like I have a tank on a VW mod, for long and slow I turn down the air flow and reduce power, and use a smaller drip tip.

I used to smoke, and I would do that for 5 minutes after meals, with coffee, or whenever I habitually smoked.
I swear.. you can just finish a smoke, pour a coffee and want another smoke to go with the coffee. Or finish eating, put down the fork, pick up a ciggy.. Those were the hardest parts of quitting.

@SavantCS ,

I am glad to read you're seemingly finding a solution to your current vaping issues. :)

Would like to offer some advice though. You can take it or leave it for what it is worth. You are currently using a starter kit and that might indeed be all you'll ever need. I suggest you look at the Eleaf brand of mods if you desire moving on in vaping. They to me seem quite good. I do what is squonking and note Eleaf has a squonking mod. I've not used any Eleaf products but have seen them and note they do well for others, might even consider getting one of their squonking mods eventually as a back up.

You will learn if you continue vaping and enjoy it long enough the wisdom in "backups of backups". I keep a regulated Smok M22 mod on hand as a main backup, two Itaste sticks as well. Regulated mods are ones which let you set the wattage and/or voltage coming from the battery. I use a mechanical mod, mostly. I have two Copper Vape mods and a few different RDA that I use, the Goon type of RDA quickly becoming one of my favorites. Don't worry if you find yourself thinking I'm speaking all "greek" here, you'll eventually come to understand some more of the terminology and it will make sense then. :)

Try using Kanthal wire if/when you start to re/build coils. It is a very good starting point despite my one caution, beware having coil build wire get into your skin like splinters. I ran a minor case of blood poison from some 32 awg wire that slipped into my finger and went unnoticed a few days. It came back out, the wire that is, hurt fairly bad on doing so but you come to expect such things to hurt. Also while offer caution, I will suggest you read up on battery safety and locate a reputable battery vendor. IMR is a very good vendor I suggest. Once you start into rebuilding coils you might find yourself also requiring swappable batteries, they are a boon for myself and many others.

You might try a lower nicotine based juice too. I am currently working toward going to 12mg/ml from 18mg/ml. If you use nicotine starting a little high to curb cravings from smoking is alright. You'll eventually get better gear and need less nicotine in the juice. Most using RDAs try sticking to around 6mg/ml, not gotten myself weened that far down yet, not due to gear being no good, I am a nicotine dependent. Note, I'm not saying addict because there is indeed a difference. Addicts are addicts mainly due to mentality. Dependents have physiological need as well as psychological.

You might also want to use a different PG/VG ratio juice. A 50/50 mix is often quite enough to let you enjoy some modest clouds once in a while. The more VG though gets you more clouds. The more PG gets you more flavor. That's a general rule of thumb. You can base your ratio of PG/VG on that as you see fit for yourself. Also you can vape or not vape as you see fit to suit yourself. Please do not misconstrue my advice here as telling you how to vape. I don't do that. Everyone finds their own "right for me" on their own because that is to me what life is, we each provide our own meaning, or lack of meaning. :) As I said, take the advice or leave it for all it's worth.

Hope you continue enjoying your way. :) :hug: :wave:

Thanks for your advice! I'm fairly new to this type of stuff and never thought it would go so in depth. I hope I'll learn a lot along the way and thanks for your help so far! I'll test out the diluted juice for a few days and let you know how it went.

Kind regards,

Smok has some excellent mods that work quite well. I have a Smok Alien and Wismec Releaux 2/3, and that's going to keep me going for quite a long time. If you have a vape shop nearby, go in and have them tell you about the various products. You can get good mod starter kits online, which include the mod and a tank, relatively inexpensively. The pens such as you have now aren't all that great for flavor or clouds, but are just meant as a starting point for beginners.

Now that you mention it, could you hand me a place where I can get to learn the terminology and more about mods and building and that type of stuff? Haven't really found a good place to help me learn some of this stuff yet.

Here ya go. There are several threads with terminology and a whole lot more. There's also a section called Builders Corner for those that want to learn and do that kind of stuff.

Oh yes! I agree. Did not really mean to overload anyone. *chuckles* :) It's simply one of those 'odd' days for me. Harsh thinking someone was only two years older than you and they go on. :( Yes, I know that is a natural part of living. Knowing that is at times little consolation, though.

Also if someone runs into some big scary problem, they can always Ask An Expert. Although please don't let the notion of expert fool you. Many here feel quite equals.

And lot of people here are pretty expert in some things. Some are expert in RTAs, some in RDA, some in flavor builds and others in clouds.
And in a few instances, the best advice is.. DONT!. lol.

I'm a great believer in the fact that I don't need to know everything, but I need to know how to find everything I need to know.

People always recommend to newbies to take slow long puffs, and in fact that's good, but IMO the problem is they're not always telling you how slow is slow and how long is long. At a local vape shop that I frequent someone who was new to vaping brought in his Smok Alien with TVF8 Baby tank, and he had burned his coil and wick just like you did because he had been taking VERY slow VERY long puffs. :)

Hi.

When I vape I don't blow steam up my own ass and when I write I rarely digress.

I found that overly saturating the wick burned my throat. This goes against what most are suggesting but this was true to my experience and I have replicated the process with similar to same results.

Try foreign the mod blowing air through the tank in short bursts, like 1 to 1&1/2second intervals a few times to get rid of excess liquid.

Vape on!

A .3 ohm coil is a little bit hot. I can tell a big difference between a .5 and a .3 coil. Might want to try a coil with a little more resistance.

That's kind of the thing, this is an all in one and the coils only come in a .3 ohm version. If this doesn't end up working I'm probably gonna look into getting an RTA.

Im a big fan of kangertech toptank (or bottomtank) mini kits for new users. They come in a 50w and 80w model ( I recommend the 80w in case you want to try other atomizers, like a drip atomizer, later on)
They are easy to use, come with a couple premade coils and a rebuildable coil, (if you wanted to build coils rather than buy them) making it a nice beginner set up. They are pretty tough too. Lord knows how many times I have dropped my mod and the tank just keeps going and going. Nice sturdy tank. (and replacement parts available if something does break.)

Some others might have other suggestions, so just pick what you like best.

I tested the diluted juice for 5 days roughly now(?) I'm waiting longer between puffs now and I'm still going. I don't know how long I'll last with this solution but it's certainly helping.

Well thanks, I guess? :D I already knew all of the above stated reasons as the most important ones and the ones that cause it were mostly discussed in this topic.

Just stumbled upon that article today and thought I'd share. :)

For someone like you, who is not a former smoker, doesn't need the nicotine, and only does it for the act (because it soothes your nerves), I really don't see much of a reason for the hot vapor that you get with sub-ohm vaping. A cooler vape at 1.2 - 1.5 ohms and 15-18W might be all you need and be much gentler on your throat.

I don't know how that Vape Pen 22 device will work on a 1.2 - 1.5 ohm coil so you may need to buy another device where you can adjust the wattage to your liking. I just know much about these non-adjustable devices and how they perform on higher ohms.

Anyhow, that's how I vape using lung hits and I am a former smoker of 2.5 to 3 packs a day of full strength and non-filters! I don't get vape competition clouds, but with 50% VG juice, I get at least 3X the clouds I would get with an analog cigarette. In fact, the cloud is thick enough and voluminous enough to dangerously obscure my vision while I'm driving if I blow it out the front of my mouth by mistake LOL.

I use smok vape pen plus which uses the same coil only they're 0.25 ohms. My VG level is 90 percent and my juice quite sweet, nicotine at 4mg. I just started vaping and my first coil lasted about a week. I thought that was a bit low, so I was extra careful with my second one just to see how much I can get out of it. Now just after a week it started fading, so a week is what I'll get. I vape about 6ml a day, I'd imagine heavy vaping could cut the coil's lifespan down to just three days.

I paid £11 for a pack of five coils. That will last me at least a month, so I don't see it as a big issue.

Yes, that is about normal. It all depends on the wattage, ohm of coil, and usage. I vape around 25 watts on a .5 and my coils last me about 10 days.
Juices that contain a lot of sweetener will shorten the coil life also.

Exactly! :) This was taught to me as part of welding class. Forget trying to know the specifics of each different metal. That can only drive you mad, instead, know where to go look it up if and when you need it.
