Wierd taste % Problems

HI guys!
I finally got my tfv12 yesterday. I bought the dual velocity deck for it and wicked it correctly. I also pulsed and positioned the coils for both coils to heat up equally. I was very happy with the taste. Great taste from the prebuilt coils. I have also been very happy with the tank until today. It started to leak from the air holes!

So what did i do next? I came home after work, and dried my mod with some paper. Opened the coil head and rewicked another time making sure that the wick seals the two holes. Now, it all suddenly tastes really weird! I tried to rewick it one more time, but still a very weird taste. I also started to get the message "No atomizer found". So i tried to dry the 510 pin with some paper, both connectors. Still same problem. It just says no atomizer. Now i open my coil and i try to wiggle a little at the velocity. It seems like the velocity is loose, so i decide to push it down a bit. Now it is working again! But the strange taste is still there.
I think my coils are burnt out as well. They are now a little black ish.

What is happening here guys? I had the same problem with one or two of the OCC clapton coils in my top box tank long time ago. I just cannot seem to understand what the issue is.

Have anyone experienced this? Anyone know what this could be? I usually dont take the coil cap on when i test my coils, so i just hold my finger at the velocity and screw it from there onto the atomizer. Will this cause any damage to the velocity ?

Im vaping 80-20vg pg mango flavour. DIY

Ypu just need wick installation practice by the sound of it... unless you have bad orings or insulator. The wick is the source and cause most leakage.

Well, i have tried 6-7 times rewicking and it still tastes like shit. I dont know what else to do.
I have been fluffing the tip of each side of the cotton pretty good. But no taste.

I apply very little cotton compared to those youtubers. I dont know anymore :D

Took me about a week to get wicking down on my first atty... 3 years later it can still take a couple days to figure out wicking on a build or atty.
Beyond that there must be something wrong with atty.

i would remove the coils and inspect the center pin i had a tank that did just that and the pin was cracked causing a small short that somehow i could taste. it still fired and did not read a short in the sense of conductivity but is changed the point the power was flowing thur the coil a bit and somehow i tasted it. resistance wise the build at the time was around .6 but there was no change there.

Hi ans thanks for the replies. Ive done wicking correct most times. The pin looks good to. No cracks or so. It worked amazing the first day.

Is it possible that my coils are fried after one day of usage? They look a little black.

Ive now rolled a scottish roll wick teqnique. If it tastes the same bad stuff i would need some more help :D

UPDATE: same bad taste.

at this point i would remove the coils and toss clean it all and ensure it is dry and no residue remains.
Clean your hands well and wrap a new coil and wick it up... hope the problem is gone. if not i am out of ideas... generally black coils means to much carbon aka to much heat. i would use steam engine and wrap something with a lower heat flux something below a Heat capacity (each coil) 40.0 mJ/K should work well for a dual coil http://www.steam-engine.org/coil.html

Story for today
I came at work and tried out my ecig in the break. It first tastes like cotton, then all suddenly after a few hits it tastes burnt. So i check the ohms on the mod and it says 0.70ohms, HOLYY shit. I started to think that some kind of connection was wrong, so when i came home i installed new coils. This time clapton staggered wire 0.30 ohm but 0.15 in parallel. I pulse them so i can make them heat equally and rewick. And AGAIN same cotton taste. At first puff it did not taste cotton, then all suddenly it does. I use a coil with less wraps than the prebuilt ones. Mod reads now 0.23ohms, something more stable. Ive tried to carefully build up the wattage, I'm still at 67 and still tastes cottons after 15 more puffs.

I think i will go ask someone at my local vape shop tomorrow. Im just walking around without clues what is wrong.

I just dont understand guys. First day wicking for the first time in my life, i had the best flavor i have ever tasted. Now it is just trash

UPDATE: After a few more puffs, it seems like the cotton taste has disappeared a little. But there is no taste compared to the good taste i had the first day i got the atomizer. I can see a difference, and that is that there is coming bubbles out in the juice. That is a good sign, but i can't see any juice coming out from the other hole. First day i got the mod it came bubbles all the time, and the atomizer worked great. I have a suspicion that the seal or something is to tight. But i dont know how to fix such things :D

UPDATE 2: So looks like the cotton taste has disappeared, i think one of the problems has been that i have tightened the tank way to much, restricting the juice to get through the holes where to cotton is. I would say it is vapeable now, but not like i should be :D I also experience a lot of spit backs when my tank is a little over half full.

Thanks for all the hints and effort guys. Im more happy now. :)

I checked the center pin and looks like its fine, it has not cracked or anything :)

new cotton taste is expected for most... spitback is a sign that there is either not enough wicking or there is not a proper vacuum and it is allow air into the center chamber somehow i would look at you seals inside the tank and inspect them carefully

Glad to see you have it worked out. I'll tell you what works for me when something like that happens. Get back to basics... Forget Scottish roll, forget fancy coils. Wrap a couple of simple coils and do a basic wicking on it. If the taste is gone after a while, then it was something with the setup. If the taste isn't gone then there's other problems. It seems to me you have it figured out though, and I came to the same thought. I think your wicks were too tight and/or too tight in the wick holes which wasn't letting enough juice in, which is why the weird cotton taste persisted. Not to mention as one of the posters said, it's common for cotton to taste weird for a bit but that should go away pretty quickly if everything is set up right.

I will forget the scottish roll :) i just tried out the premade T12 coil, and it shows the right ohms. seems like there has been a production faulty on my two dual rba. And you are right, the cotton taste should disappear quickly. It was all in the wicking ans letting the juice flow more sideways instead of straight upwards. I found out it is smart to use up as much space as possible on the deck :)

I just threw my 2 rbas right into the garbage can. Going to try out the triple coil. :)

I've been reading your posts for a while now and you're having a helluva time getting things to work for you.

I got to admire your determination. Hang in there, dude. You'll get it! :)

Coil loose in post would be my guess.
Is the end of one black next to the post and the other ends are not?

3 months later, I have resolved the TFV12 leak issue I've been having. I replaced and double checked every O ring in the atty, and just when all seemed good, blorp. Entire tank running down my mod/in my pocket.

Infuriating. it made no difference what coil was in the atty, factory/dual/triple RBAs, same thing always randomly eventually happened.

The culprit? The O ring that you cannot see. The 12 uses the same base design as the 8. On either of those attys, turn the airflow ring in the base. Notice anything? The airflow ring has a slight, even resistance as you turn it, because there is a seal inside the base, That is what causes the friction you feel.

That seal, is not accessible, as the base is pressed together from 4 parts. (bottom, top, airflow ring, and the seal) Not accessible that is without destroying the base. During the pressing operation, you can easily imagine what happens to that O ring, if it is slightly misaligned. it gets cookie-cuttered. It will partially seal, for a while, until the tank pressure, or vacuum forces the juice past, then gravity does the rest.

I obtained a different base, and not a single leak. I even switched all the parts including the center pin, Not even a hint of a leak. Yet.

Eventually the hidden O ring will degrade, or wear enough that they all will begin to dump. The TFV8s as well. And no way to repair them. Bastards. This TFV12 is likely my last Smok atty.

So, if like me you have been tormented by this tank, and its tendency to leak like the Titanic, although in a purely random manner, know that its not you, its Smok. And if even one person suggests that it HAS to be your wicking, just smile, and ask if they will trade their base for yours...:D
