Triple Core Builds

What are the different methods for building triple core builds. I have been trying to do so but just cant keep the wires from bunching up. Tried tape, wire, paperclips, key rings, glue, even a piece of aluminum can. Nothing seems to keep the cores separate. I'm also building slow, one inch at a time, tying my ends, and Im using ball bearing swivels. The more progress, the more the cores seem to bunch up. I don't want to continue to hammer the wires or be correcting the wires with nylon pliers every time they bunch up. I've seen some videos that show builders making triple core Captons and they don's seem to have to hammer or correct the wire with pliers. Consequently, their builds are flawless. What methods do you use that have worked for you??

I like to take .5 Ribbon and loosely wrap it around the cores, then pinch with Nylon Pliers. I use these on just about every build I do, using .5 Ribbon it easily slides over staggering/alien wrap/twisted wire.

I thought it was perhaps a new name for coil builds until I read the OP.

I've never setup a swivel system to do any of my builds, so, I'm not sure if the technique is the same as doing it freehand, but I make triple core alien wire all the time and the biggest issue I ran across that caused the bunching was sagging in the core wires. At first I just shortened my core wires in order to keep them from sagging, but now I've figured out that supporting the core wires behind where I'm wrapping does just as well. When the three core wires are wrapped, they are stiffer and less prone to sag and that stiffens the loose core wires ahead of the wrap for the next couple of inches, so, supporting the wrapped wire and keeping it level directly behind where the wrapping is taking place causes the loose cores in front of the wrap to stay straight and level and less prone to cross or bunch together in the dreaded triangle configuration.

Haven't tried ribbon wire. Will give it a shot. What are the ohms do you get on those 7 core wrapped claptons? (bottom left hand corner)

With this technique, depending on the pressure you apply to the thinner gauge wire you're wrapping with, you will have varying levels of corkscrewing or pigtailing with the wire once your done, but if you just clip off your excess core wires when your done and leave it in the drill and grip the end of the wire with some pliers and slowly engage the drill, you should be able to work it out to almost flat, then you can take the nylon pliers and finish taking out any gradual twists left...here's an example of what I mean...on the left is right after done re-claptoning some triple core alien wire and on the right is after straightening with the drill, but before the nylon tipped pliers

Yeah, thats not a problem for me. I get corkscrew wire even with swivels. But i don't mind straightening the wire after. In fact, i find that once you actually start wrapping the wire on the bit, any twists in the wire get corrected.

They would be .06-.07 with 28g N80 Cores (Wraps/3mm ID) but these are mostly for show...I would stay with a 4 or 5 core version to vape.
You dont need to play with Ribbon...Ive done just about every build there is with Ribbon but the Ribbon replaced with Round wire...round wire can heat and cool down faster then Ribbon, especially if SS but most people will argue Ribbon has better flavor.

My favorite build to date is the Alien Staggertons...they seem really difficult and look hard but if youve made an alien then I could easily get you having them down in a couple days...the vape is fantastic-hot-saturated-flavorful and ramps up/cools down instantly.

IMO swivels are a must to grow...theres only so far you can go before you will need them. The sooner you start using them the more experience you will have under your belt.

I actually use nothing now... I use to and i found in the end that it wasnt from my cores not being straight i was actually stretching my decore to much... Im not saying you are and the last thing we all want is someone to beat the same tune in your head when your frustrated. Just next time when you decore and your not sure on your stretch then understretch it. I use absolutely nothing now and its perfect everytime as long as i dont second guess myself when stretching "just a little more..." understretch that shit buddy. Everytime my cores collapse its because i stretched it to much come to find out.

For aliens you may not need anything since the wrap gives enough structure to wrap. With anything else it can be difficult to fuse 3+ cores without it bunching up.

You bring up a very good point that I failed to mention earlier about how important the prep work is to making things successful (and easier) with these more advanced builds. Again, I haven't worked with any swivel system before, so, this tip that I use is for the old school freehanders, and it's extremely basic but equally as important...taping the ends. I use FrogTape, but you could just as easily use masking tape or painters tape.
I cut a thin strip across the width of the roll

Lay my three cores down in place as perfectly parallel as possible

Then, I personally find it much better to FOLD the tape over and under multiple times rather than rolling

The last step, I take a pair of pliers and apply even pressure and firm, but not so tight that the cores slide or move any at all, then I squish it a bit with my thumb and forefinger

This helps assure that (when freehanding), closing the chuck tight using the flat part of the chuck doesn't cause the cores to shift...this is how I start my wraps until I'm far enough away from the chuck to be able to use my grip with the steadying finger and remove and center the core wires in the chuck to finish the claptoning

I agree raymo, i didnt mean to make it sound like using something was wrong. I use the ribbon technique alot.
