Lost Vape Therion 166 (DNA250)

Woah thanks a lot, Steve! Actually even before I bought mine, I already learned a lot from you hear reading from page 1 to here, so yeah, many thanks man. You're a gem to the vaping community. And btw, I've already downloaded your ecig file and I'mma give it a try once I arrive home from work. Will post here updates and questions if ever I have one in the future. For the mean time, I can help but stare at this beauty. Trumps all my mods easily for the premium feel. Overall, A very happy Therion 166 owner so far. :D

I have a new carbon fiber black frame and carbon door Therion DNA166 I'm going to post as WTS. I already have my personal and don't need two. I've also gotten more into mechs lately.

Well I couldn't resist. I had the itch to buy something new, a little extra money in my pocket, and some points built up. I just received a Dark Blossom Therion 166 to add to the collection. I think I hit the Lottery on this one. I really like the pattern.

Edit I'm not sure why the bottom scale (s) in the last pic have a Blue tint, that's not the way it looks in real life. It must be the artificial light combined with my not so great phone's camera. I'll try to take some better outdoor, natural light pictures if anyone is interested. Here's another picture that I took that I didn't think was as good that doesn't show he scale as Blue (that's really strange that it came out like that)

Your welcome man. Yeah the print on the dark blossom is super nice. I love the big scales, its the underside of the snake. You got super lucky...

Hi Steve, I was hoping you could help me with my questions regarding temp control on my Therion 166.
This is the first time that I'll be using TC so please bear with my naivety :p

Okay so I'm using SS 316 not 316L as SS 316 is the only option that I have in my local vape shop. My question is, can I use the 316L profile on your ecig file to work with SS 316. Are they similar in terms of TCR?

Next question is, What recommended wattage and temperature can I start with which I can vape safely, can you give me ballpark figures I can go for?
Currently I'm using 45W 220C But sometimes after firing it for 2 seconds I get the "Temp protected" status and the coil stops firing. Any tips I can go about for this?

Thank you so much for the inputs, again please bear with me as I'm really new to the TC mode ;)

PM sent. In case anyone is interested, here's my reply (I saw the PM first):

Hi dreilacadin,

The TCR for SS316l and 316 is virtually the same so the 316L profile can be used without issue.

The Temp Protect is really a warning, it's more informational. What's it's telling you is the coil has come up to the set Temperature and the mod is varying power to stop from going over it.. That can be shut off/changed to just show you the Temp, or left as is.That is done in the theme tab of Escribe.

As for TC. Here is two things to keep in mind.
1. The Temperature you set regulates how hot your Vape will be.
2. The Power (watts) and Preheat regulates how fast you will get to your set Temperature (ramp up time).

I usually set my Temperature to 420F + or - 10F (410F - 430F). Saying what's safe is a tough question. I've read a few things saying some vapes can start produce a certain chemical above 430F (can't recall what off the top of my head). That being said, Evolv is very safety conscious so I would assume if that was a proven fact, they would cap the temp at 420F instead of 600F. What I'm saying is I can't really answer that question.

I like 420F so that's what I mainly use. I know lots of people that like their vape a little warmer and use 450F. I'm sure some go even higher. The power level depends on how fast you want the ramp up to be and the metal mass of your coils. Bigger beefier coils require more power to get up to temperature. I mainly use an Aromamizer Supreme (dual coil RTA) with SS430 wire that is 28ga, 7 wraps each with a 2.5mm ID (they normally come out to .32 ohms). I usually use 30-35 watts with a 60 watt preheat. When I'm using 28/36 Claptons (same size - wraps/ID), I raise it up to 35 watts/70 watts preheat (those are on the small size for Claptons)

In summary. Temps controls the heat, power controls how fast you get there. The set temperature is personal preference, the power/preheat depends on if you want a slow or fast ramp up (some people want it slower, some faster). There is no safety concerns with the power/preheat setting since the mod itself will vary power to keep you from going over your set temp (Temp Protect). Lastly, I posted my Ecig file here that has 7TC profiles, 1 for Power Mode, Custom Theme and screens, case thermals, mods internal resistance, battery discharge curve and watt hours foe Samsung 30Q's (I also use the same one for LG HG2's).
Link to my Therion 166, Triade250, VT133, Lavabox M DNA 75, and VF133 ECIG Files

Here's where you disable the Temp Protect informational message if you want to do so.

I hope this helps. Let me know if this gets you sorted. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Woah Steve!

I'm speechless with the amount of detail and thoroughness of your response. I'm flabbergasted! Thank you so much for the indepth support Steve!

I carefully tried all the tips you stated above. Here are the steps that I did:

1. Set my preheat to 60w 1 second. Previously it was 75 watts and the vape I was getting was very harsh so I stepped it down a bit.
2. Set my Temp and Wattage to the ones you recommended. 35w power and 420F, and boy do they make the difference. I'm not getting the temp protect warning anymore and I'm getting a smooth, consistent vape!
3. Enjoyed the vape experience all night long. :D

Now I think I just have to tweak my temp settings a bit to find the sweet spot when it comes to my juices, recently I tried 450F and the flavor and warmth is right about where I like it. Is it still safe to vape at that temp even though other's are saying that the burning point of cotton is 420F?

Again thanks a lot Steve, your dedication to every response shows and you deserve every bit of credit man. Myriads of thanks!

You're welcome and I'm glad it helped. Thanks for the kind words my friend, I appreciate that. Vaping at 450Fis no problem. The burning point of cotton is around 420F but that's dry cotton. It would never get to be bone dry while you were vaping. You would know long before that your tank was empty (less/no vapor and or off taste). Once the cotton is wet/damp, the burning point increases greatly.

Cheers,
Steve

Hi Steve, thanks again with your generous response. Though I'm afraid I do have a lot of follow-up questions again, hope you won't mind.

1. What wattage do you normally get when vaping with TC SS316? I set the max temp to about 420F-450F but the wattage usually only falls at 16W-20W making the vape production minimal thus resulting to almost non existent flavor, can you help me out with this?

2. Also, do I need to lock my ohms will in TC mode? I'm using the built in SS316 profile from the device, do you have any other profile settings that I can try?

Thanks a lot again,

Drei

Hi Drei,

I don't really pay that much attention to the wattage in TC, I'm more concerned with if it's hitting my set temperature. The wattage will drop once you achieve your set temperature to keep you from going over it.

As I mentioned before I posted my Ecig file here. If you download that it has 7 different TC profiles, 1 for Power Mode, custom screens, custom theme, mods resistance, case thermals, etc. I have to change the file extension because .Ecig files are supported here. If you want I can send you the file via email if you PM you Email address. I won't have to change the extension if we go that route. Here's the link if you just want to download it from here and change the file extension back to .ecig. The instructions are in the post. I use my own profiles in all my DNA mods.
Link to my Therion 166, Triade250, VT133, Lavabox M DNA 75, and VF133 ECIG Files

Evolv doesn't recommend locking the resistance in TC. The DNA chips monitor the resistance as the coils cool down and will adjust the cold resistance if it sees it has changed as the coils break in/change with age. This is called Refinement. If you lock resistance this feature is disabled. The only time Evolv recommends locking resistance is if the atty's resistance is unstable. I recommend not using attys with unstable resistance in TC.

The one important thing to keep in mind is too make sure your coils are at room temperature when you first screw on the atomizer because the mod locks that resistance in it's memory as the cold resistance. The mod determines the temperature by the rise in resistance from the cold/room temperature state combined with the TCR of the selected wire you are using. I hope this makes sense.

Cheers,
Steve

As a lot of you may know I have not been the biggest fan of Evolov's customer service and for good reason. I have owned as many as 6 Hcigar VT 133's. At one point in time they were the best bang for the buck you could find with a DNA chipset. So whenever they went on sale I would pick one up. 5 out of the 6 worked beautifully and I still vape on one till this day but for some reason one of them always gave me trouble.

Being aware of Evolv's so called legendary customer service I sent that one back to them to check out. After all one of the reasons I chose a DNA was for the warranty. Evolv sent the device back to me and nothing was fixed. So I packed it up and sent it out again. 16 days later I got the device back and it was still not fixed. I did this two more times with the same result. Each time I waited anywhere from 14 to 22 days and I got the same result, a broken device sent back to me with the dreaded no atomizer screen. After the 4th time I decided to speak with the front of the horse. It took some time but eventually I got to speak with someone at Hcigar. They told me that it sounded like my daughter board was fried. I spoke with Nick at Evolv and he concurred. He also told me that they do not keep that daughter board in stock. I went back to my contact at Hcigar and told them what Nick said. The rep at Hcigar suggested that I ship the mod back to Hcigar. My response was that the shipping along with the shipping costs I already paid to have the mod sent to Evolv 4 times would by far exceed what I actually paid for the mod. After some hemming and hawing Hcigar agreed to ship a daughter board with my name on it to Nick at Evolv. I sent the mod back to Evolv for a 5th time after Nick notified me that my daughter board was there. 24 days later I got my mod back and guess what? Same thing, it didn't work. I sent Evolv an email about it and kept the existing ticket open but I never got a response. At this point I was just fed up and I just decided to chuck the mod and chalk this up to a loss. After this experience I was not shy on this or other forums about my distaste for Evolve's customer service.

After a few months I get a PM from @SirRichardRear. He asked me if I was the one that had that problem with Evolv and how many times I actually sent it back. I told him 5. He said I’ll get back to you in a bit. Apparently Nick from Evolv was preaching the virtues of Evolv’s customer service on another forum. SRR called him out on it and conveyed my story to Nick and the rest of the forum. Nick knew exactly who SRR was talking about and I was contacted that day. Apologies ensued and after all the pleasantries were exchanged Nick offered to get me a Therion to replace my janky VT133. I accepted but to be honest I was not expecting much as I have been regularly disappointed by this department before.

Now, a few weeks later I am happy to report that I am the proud owner of a brand new Rat Snake Black Therion with a carbon fiber inlay. Nick even personally checked it out for me and included a set of Sony batteries. I wanted to tell this story not to call Evolv out but rather to give them credit for realizing they had made a mistake and acted on making it right. Orlando Batista once said “An error doesn't become a mistake unless you refuse to correct it”. I want to give all the credit that is due to Nick from Evolv for acting on this wrong that Evolv perpetrated. It takes a good man to realize his company made a mistake and then take the proper action to correct it. Thank you Nick.

I also want to give credit to SRR. For those of you that don’t know him he’s a good guy that always tries to help out any way he can. Along with his knowledge he is an asset to this community. Thank you SRR, good looking out.

I just wanted to get this story out there because we always hear all the bad things about vaping and its communities. All the warranty problems, exploding batteries, the customer service issues, coil problems, ejuice labels, etc, etc. God knows I have made my share of those kind of posts as well. Unfortunately we don’t hear enough of the good stuff that happens. I want people to know that not all companies are alike and some do truly stand by their products, even if it does take a little prodding. At the same time not all forums are alike as well. Not all forums are ban happy or look for members to make a mistake so they can jump on them. Some do have members that have a genuine concern for the well being of the community. So again a big thanks to SRR and Nick from Evolv. Great job guys.

Man thats an awesome ending to a frustrating problem. It shouldnt have took 5+ times, sending the mod in to get nothing fixed and getting it back broken. Im glad they made right on the situation and got you a badass Therion.

Evolv doesn't recommend locking the resistance in TC.

Steve

Been a little while since posting in this thread. Going on 6 months since I actually took a puff of a cigarette. I put it squarely on the Therion with Temp Control to finally kick the habit. Again credit goes out to Steve for this thread. This is the best Mod I've owned in the 4 years vaping. Vaped and smoked for years. It did cut down my cig per day but this is the only device that made it stick. Love the mod.

It's all good. When you clicked on restore defaults, that restored the chips defaults not the mods itself. What it did was change the battery settings to 3 cells among other things (reset the factory DNA250 defaults from Evolv). You can either go in and change everything manually or load my file in my signature or PM your Email and I'll send you the factory Ecig file.

You didn't hurt or damage the mod.

Cheers,
Steve
I have very similar problem but one of my cels is reading really low. 0,4v i checked on few cells, is there any kind of fix? Rest of the problem is same as above. (only working while holding power button. I uploded your ecig. file but i didn't help, also switched manualy to 2-cell same. While conected to escribe and holding fire it say "check battery". Any help?

Is it always the same cell running low. I'd check to see which cell it is then switch them around (cell 1 to cell 2) to see if the problem switches from one cell to the other. If it does its the battery. If the same cell still reads low its the mod (example cell 2 still reads low if that was the one originally reading low).

Cheers,
Steve

Hi Mero,

I remember you. How are you doing my friend?

I don't see why you couldn't run the same build in the Therion as in the Triade. It's the same board just limited to ~6.0v output because of 2 cells instead of 3 (buck only). That's more of an issue with high resistance builds vs low resistance.I think you really like the mod, I know I do!

Im thinking of purchasing a Therion166/250 mod. I don't really have any interest in using temp mode. Power Mode will work fine. Vaping at 40 to 60w.
I have a MAC Computer. I know the software is PC only. I can always find someone with PC but it would take a few days before I can get down there to do the software bit.

The question I have is will the Mod work right out of the box in Power Mode?

It will but it's pricey and has a lack of options for pure watts mode. Really up to you and your budget if you are willing to pay the heft price for looks alone. it doesn't do anything special in watts mode and actually lacks a lor of feature in watts mode that other mods have like curves and preheats

I thought I have read somewhere that the DNA had a punch or preheat for watt mode. Maybe it was through an update. Can anyone verify this?

Just an update. I've had the grey ostrich version for 6 months. I used it a lot for about 3 months and then started alternating use with 2 other mods. I'm sharing this because I think it'll be helpful if we get an idea of how long these mods actually last.

About 2 weeks ago, my therion conked out. I woke up to find one set of batteries completely dead. Tested the switch to see if it was stuck, tried other batteries and saw the mod was auto-firing. I sent it to a local repair guy (cheaper than back and forth shipping to evolv or lost vape) and he told me there were 3 short-circuited chips on the board. I asked if it was ejuice seeping in and he said there wasn't a lot of ejuice inside. He fixed it, and it's back, and it works.

Also, what treatment they did on the leather started rubbing off in places. I rubbed more off with my thumb and it was like dried glue. Anyway, without the treatment, the color underneath is flat and butt ugly. I asked a friend to change the leather for me. She peeled off the leather and used it to cut some new leather and used contact cement to stick that on. The only thing is, she doesn't have the leather tool to create rounded corners so it isn't perfect. Still looks spiffy. I'll see if I can post decent pics here later.

I sent mine in for repair a week ago. The fire button became very loose and I treat my mods with care. I've had it since February and it doesn't have a scratch on it. Anyway... the fire button became so loose that it kept getting stuck firing on the edges of the mod surrounding the button. They said it would maybe be 4-6 weeks before I get it back o_O

February! That's just 4 months. Crap. I love the look, feel and performance of the therion but life span, I don't know. And it isn't cheap. I don't mind cosmetic issues. They're fixable. My friend and the local repair guy can even repaint mods. But the board failing or switch failing after a few months sucks.

Long time lurker. Just signed up to say thanks to everyone in this thread. Been looking at getting a therion 166 for a while and finally pulled the trigger this morning on a black/carbon/grey rat snakeskin and a black carbon fiber battery door from wnyvapes. I found a 10% off link earlier in the thread that I was able to use. Already got wingsfan's file downloaded and waiting to use. I have a rx200 and have been using temp control with ss316 for a while now and from what I've researched and read I'm excited to try it out on the therion. Again thanks for all information.

Just like the Triade the paint will come off and the battery contacts will wear out. Takes me about 3 months. For a minimum of $130 on the net it looks very nice to begin with. Wait a few months and you lost whatever amount you spent on it most likely. YMMV. It does look very nice unused though. IMO, nicer than the Triade. Not many people need more than 167 so that is actually fine. I really do like to run the DNA boards on 3 balanced cells though. They say 2 or 3 but it is really intended for 3. Well, in fact it is really intended for a Lipo. Sure, they put reverse polarity but nothing else about accepting primary cells has changed. I still really like it but would be buying one every 2-3 months. At that rate I much prefer customs. Since you will end up spending more anyways if you want it looking snazzy. Not bashing it, it is fine but it is not a custom which looks even nicer IMO. Depends on if you will continuously replace it to keep it looking good and working good I suppose. I guess for that price I would rather buy a non DNA Mod for much less. Again, not bashing it just telling my experience with it. For LV the Efusion mini was the best thing they ever made IMO. Especially the Abalone I think is much nicer than Leather, Wood. plus you can even replace the Lipo. Good luck getting one now though. People that have them tend to hold onto them because they know this. Mainly it is anodized Vs. painted and no contact issues. My feeling is if they can improve this design it is really nice.

My therion just arrived from Wnyvapes. Very impressed with them got my mod in 2 days. Just playing around with it for now. It looks and feels really nice. Got my herakles plus with 316ss coil on it right now. Will build a new coil for my rta tonight after work.

Would the DNA 75 profile you linked to work in the Therion 75 BF?

Just got one two days ago. So far so good. Hits like a champ. Feels great in my hand. The little cloth thingy where the battery compartment is. First time changing batteries I didn't leave the cloth thingy behind on the battery closest to the mod. Kind of mess getting it out. I had to use a plastic butter knife to pry it out. Lesson Learned.

Hi, a long time lurker. I pulled a trigger on a simple black Therion 166 yesterday, and that was mainly because of the DNA chip capabilities and never getting the satisfactory vape quality in TC mode across my previous mods. I've been off the cigs for about 6 months and went from nothing knowing to making my own vertebraids, fused claptons, staggered; all in all found myself a new hobby.
Now, after I read through all of there is to read about Therions, I have few things to worry; I see people, not only here, have bad experiences with short-circuits on boards, leather pealing off, contacts malfunctioning after few months,...did I made a good choice or should I've stick to pealed off Alien and above expectation performing Omniboard on Vaporesso? Is it possible that I'll be looking at other mods in a short period of time?
I'm just worried in my investment :) yeah, it looks nice, but there are better options and nicer looking ones for paper weights :)
I already have all set up Escribe, downloaded .ecig files in expectation of it; and many thanks to Steve, your patience and devotion is only left to be admired. I learned a lot thanx to you! Thank you :)

One more question. Wh for Sony VTC6 if anyone knows that would be great.

Nah, I have quite a few DNAs and I love them. I had a single one go wonky after a few months. A quick trip to Evolv took care of the issue.
You know, with so many mods in so many people's hands, you have to expect that some will take care of the mod, some won't Kind of like my old Zippo lighters. People would always ask 'Is that a Zippo? Let me see it' Then they'd do the slap it open and light it trick. Then they find that I didn't appreciate the effort. In 'normal' usage, the mods are fine. If you insist that you are going to dump juice all over it, drop it on the ground, put crappy batteries in, spill beer on it, well, it isn't going to hold up.

I have yet to find a mod that has the capabilities of a DNA when it comes to dialing in MY vape.

Enjoy your shiny new mod!

Yes it will work. The only things that might need tweaking would be the case thermals and mod's internal resistance. It's probably close enough, but since I don't have that particular mod I can't say for sure. Personally, I would run the case analyzer because each mod seems to be different when it comes to the case thermal properties.

Congrats on the new mod. I really like mt Rgerions and I think you will too.

The watt hours for two VTC6's is 22.2 WH. There is a WH calculator in Escribe that will work it out for you if you change cells in the future. The formula is:
WH = Nominal Voltage (7.4v for two 18650's in series) x mah / 1000
22.2WH = 7.4 x 3000 / 1000

Cheers,
Steve
