Spam Control Please

Yep, it's out of control, Last few weeks 3-4 pages of it practically, before you get to recent posts.
Seems it's hard to find staff on the time of night they sneak in the door.
Manually trying to control Spam is a whack a mole process and not a viable solution, you'll never be able to control it and it eventually spins totally out of control.

I, the automated Spam controller have been busy with real life stuff the past few weeks.

My inability to stay awake to 7 am has caused a dozen or so spammers to stay on the forum for an extra few hours.

When someone gets on in the morning we get them and I don't think it's really a world ending experience to have spam on the forum for an extra 3 or 4 hours.

We all know what the spam looks like so your best bet would be for you as a forum member to just avoid clicking on it.

I know you and Jack are usually still on when I log off at 0300. Someone else is on around 0730 when I get to work in the morning.
How long are we really unattended.

I've been clicking to report. Should I not?
Good question, Khassy.
I'm sure Sick means to not click on the actual post or reply to it.
Clicking on <Report Post> and entering why ("SPAM, new member first post")
is indeed the proper course of action.

Of course, mods get distracted, go to the toilet, munchies, that sort of thing
so don't expect the post to get deleted right away..but it will happen..eventually :)

PLEASE PLEASE BY ALL MEANS REPORT THE SPAM!
We keep an eye out but are far from perfect. Like hazy said, sometimes we go tinkle in the potty and miss things.

But DO NOT post on the spam threads. If you post on a spam thread and we ban the spammer, there is a bug that can inadvertently cause you to get spam banned also. It does t happen all the time but it has happened. Just report the spam and keep on going.

It's good to click report that is why the button is there.
But if there is no one around to see the report then we get to it as soon as we are around.
BTW how can you type with paws?:D

As much as I hate seeing spam clutter the threads, I hate the idea of new folks joining the forum having to wait to be approved by an actual human being

That's why an automated system is needed. The Stop Forum Spam plug in checks a black list of known Spammers and blocks them from even registering.

If folks would learn to report spam instead of looking and moving on it would be a big help.
So would having new members respond to an e -mail to activate there account.

It just means you are up to early :D

A mod from a time zone that is 8 hours behind ours would be nice. ;)

Well i happen to be in such a time zone (Italy), and I'm reporting a buttload of spam every fucking morning.
Can't we introduce a two-step subscription process?
PS: why the fuck most spam posts now blatantly state 'I'm a spammer ban me'... Beats me...

I believe it's part of the forum system that replaces certain key words with that phrase. :)

Nice to know I'm not the only non-moderator doing this. I wish more folks helped clean house.
Personally after a few months of reporting more than a dozen Spam's a day I just got tired of it. Honestly I'm not even close to being as active on this forum as I used to, large part is due to so much Spam.

As I've suggested a few times VU needs to be much more proactive with Spam control. There are a ways to do this, one is installing something like the Stop Forum Spam plugin that provides a API that sync's up with their blacklist of known Spammers.

Depending on Mods to manually delete Spam is just playing Whack a Mole and you'll never ever get ahead of this, fact is you'll just get buried further.

When the boner pill spammers use certain words they show up as "I am a spammer ban me" instead of the actual word.

Good idea rossco like it saves the relentless manual effort for the mods, freeing them up to ...well moderate the forums and help people

I once replied to a spam thread almost got banned when I was a nooby still didn't know the don't post rule

Although just one thought I'm not IT expert by any means but do the plugins create other security or privacy issues?

Spammers get the hammer but if a regular member posts in the spammers thread Moderators know to delete the regular members post before pushing the hammer button. And I can always reinstate a member if they get caught up in the hammer.

Nope, for example the Stop Forum Spam plugin just provides an api so the forum software just does a query to their database of known spammers when they're creating an account. Then if they are on the blacklist it denies the account creation. Additionally "if" one was to get by the Moderator would when removing their account due to Spammer it would be reported to the Stop Forum Spam. What's being reported is the ISP, Network and email address, no privacy issues.

You're still playing Whack a Mole, Spam is getting worse and will continue to do so.

You really, really need a more proactive approach, not reactive ;)

Vu Bot has a dirty mind from what other members tell me.
I heard he's in to all kinds of wild sex toys.
He also likes Chinese vendors much more than American ones.

Lol I remember some new member reported Vu Bot a few weeks ago:xD:

Do you see any spammers on the forum right now
as we speak

We already have in place a database of known spammers with a black list.

I report it everytime I see it too, but nights when there are multiple spam posts, when I do the 2nd one, I have to type "spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam" in order not to get that "please wait for some ungodly length of time before posting" -- typing "spam" ten times on the report box usually beats that 10 second wait time... USUALLY.

I asked about shortening that time, a few months ago, and met total apathy. So sometimes I'll just report one, and hang all the rest.

Any system that uses an IP address as an identifier to ban is a waste of time so to speak...Its not hard to acquire a new IP address if you wanted one even if youre in the same location...People do this all the time on game sites to cheat or after being banned for cheating or breaking the rules.

I havent been on one site that doesnt get some form of spam.
