My Rebel 3 from VaporFi vented and freaked me out.

Hey guys. My battery vented and it was a freaky experience. I'd really like some advice so I can get a better understanding of it all, as well as share my experience so that it doesn't happen to anyone else in the future.

I've been vaping for about a year, and I did about as much research as I could before I bought what I thought would be a reasonably safe, rather fool-proof mod for a newbie looking for some clouds. I heard nothing but good things about VaporFi so I ended up purchasing the Rebel 3, which I happily used for about five months without much issue except for the mod occasionally becoming warm to the touch, and sometimes inhaling a pop of hot juice into my mouth. When this would happen I would stop using it for at least a few hours, as well as giving it a thorough cleaning if the juice had been popping while taking hits.

One night I came home totally exhausted from work and wanted to do nothing but chill for the rest of the night and vape. I noticed the battery and my juice were a little low so I refilled my tank. The mod got a little sticky so I took a damp rag and wiped it down. This rag may have been a little bit TOO damp, in retrospect. Though I dried it as thoroughly as I could, that probably wasn't enough, as common sense can deduce that water very likely got into the device, given the events that follow:

I set it down to go do a couple of things, didn't even think about possible hazard issues my light cleaning could have posed for me, and then a few minutes later I came back and plugged the device into the charger it came with. It immediately started to make alarming sizzling and hissing sounds. I quickly unplugged it, realized that the sound wasn't stopping, only getting louder. I freaked out and thought it might explode (something I was told was a very rare, 1 in a million kind of odds thing) and maybe set the living room on fire. The hissing got louder and it began to smoke lightly, which then turned to a small flame like a tiny birthday candle. I couldn't think clearly, so the best thing I could come up with was quickly take it outside and set it on cement and use a fire extinguisher on it until it stopped hissing and smoking.

I was totally shaken by this and realized how easy it is to make a mindless mistake that can have very serious consequences. One of the things that scares me the most is the thought of what might have happened if I was using it at the time.

What I have taken away from my experience:

* You CAN become a statistic of anything, especially if you get careless for even a moment.
* NEVER get the device wet. Even a little bit. Which is just common freaking sense anyway.
* I will probably never use it while it's plugged in, even though a lot of people safely do.

Even though I've identified what was most likely the cause of the vent -- and I most definitely will NOT re-make that mistake, I'm still freaked out by seeing it happen, and having it happen TO me; I don't feel safe vaping again, but I really want to! The thought of having the battery vent into my mouth is horrific. So, I'm turning to you guys to see what you think about everything. If you have some additional insight I haven't considered into what happened that would be useful, along with any information that might dispel or lessen my fear if at all unwarranted, should I be a smarter vaper in the future.

While I am calling myself on the user error for the battery's failure, do you know if VaporFi's products are actually trust-worthy, safe and good quality? From what I researched it is often recommended as being so, but I want to know if anyone here has some advice about it. I was initially looking for something that can produce some good clouds (nothing too crazy, but decent) where I don't have to build coils or mess with a lot of settings, and isn't really bulky. You know, something really easy to use, safe, without a lot of room for personal error. I liked the model a lot, up until it fried.

I miss vaping and I want to feel confident and have fun blowing smoke rings again! I just joined here, so I intend on learning and keep learning. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks you guys!

Water and electronics don't do well with each other in general....not just with vape gear but all electronics
so I'd say that on this occasion with you and your mod, it was most definitely user error and unless you've found any negative reviews or write ups about this particular mod, you can learn from this mistake and start over:)

The only critisim I found in reviews is that it can be a bit leaky. For cleaning in general do you have any recommended methods?

Which in turn will gum up the electronics in the mod and cause it to malfunction. So I'd be looking at a different set up, if these are known to be a leaky mess.

To clean any device in the future, I would get a paper towel because it is the easiest to wring out nearly all the way and wipe down your mod. If you get one with a removable battery, take it out and wipe the mod down with the slightly damp pt and then thoroughly dry it off. Make sure you wipe down the 510 connector too as it can get accumulated juice around and in it. Make sure everything is dry then replace your battery and tank. Keep calm and Vape on! :)

But on the bright side - welcome to VU

So I discovered! It has been overwhelming getting started with so many options out there along with so many conflicting opinions and things to learn. It was hard finding and settling on a device that seemed suited to my comfort level and provide me with clouds similar to what I could pull from hookah -- which I LOVE, but need to cut back on by a lot. I wanted to start vaping so I could be healthier and still enjoy a similar experience. :/ I'm back to looking now and even more cautious than I was when I first heard about the injuries explosions have left people with.

It's rather rare to hear a regulated mod catching on fire. I can only think of about 6 different mods in the last few years which are just junk and fire hazards.

If you pick a mod, post what you choose, someone will know about the mods history.

^^^^Very good advice and insight

It is tough with all the choices out there - and you are right, everyone has an opinion, that's for sure

But there are plenty of good options at least :)
