Favorite RDAs for DIY taste testing?

Hi!

I was wondering what RDAs people favor for test their blends?

Over the years I have tried a number or RDAs. Two or three from the IGO series, 454 Big Block, Royal Hunter Mini, Sapor, 13 Heavens 9 Hells, Narda, and the two post DotCom.

I am currently using the DotCom two post rda..

It is the only RDA I have ever tried in which I can taste any and every flavor, with any cotton. I can usually even taste flavors that I have gone "taste blind" to.

Wayne with Diy or Die on a video suggested the Hadlay...

Vaping with Vic has recommended the Sapor and more recently the Wasp Nano..

Thank you!

I have 7 Peerless RDAs I use for testing but thats just me. Inexpensive and get the job done. If your mix is bad it will be bad in any RDA, the build is were I feel you really tell the difference.

Thank you! I saw this review on the Peerless:

Geekvape Peerless RDA Review and Rundown by Jai Haze

I was really surprised that he reported it to have stayed very cool. Have you had that experience?

Depends on the build I have in it. Single wrap 22/24 ga Ni80 or Kanthal typically stay pretty cool, Aliens or regular claptons can get hot pretty quick... Just depends really. If you run wide open air flow you can even keep them cooled down some but I like warmish dense vapes.

Awesome! May I ask, about what wattage you like to use for round wire Ni80 or Kanthal?

I'm a tank gal, so I use a 2ml tank. That way if I don't care for a mix, I don't have a lot to vape through.

AWESOME! I would love to hear about your favorite setups if you have time..

I like to use either the Vape Systems By-Ka V4, Avocado 22mm original, the UD Bellus, or the Augvape Merlin. Oh, I understand that Augvape is releasing a 22mm version of the Merlin soon!

I use the same build in my rebuildable tanks that I do in my rebuildable dripper.

Single coil, slightly spaced, 24gauge Kanthal, 6 wraps, 3mm inner diameter at 10watts.

Typically, I was using a Goblin Mini (v1) ALL the time, day in, day out. Usually had a couple going. On those, I was using a 2.5 ID, 5 wraps, 28g kanthal. Obviously, I'm a low wattage, above ohm vaper, LOL. I've had a couple of the full size Merlins, enjoyed the flavor, ease of build, etc... but never could get over the leaking/seeping. Traded one, shelved the other. On those, I was using a 3mm ID, same wire, etc... Ran into a couple incredible deals through other vapers, a while back, and was able to pick up a Geekvape Ammit and Serpent RDTA. I also build those at 3mm ID, same wire, etc... Those 2 are in my daily rotation, along with an Aromamizer v2 4ml that I picked up from another vaper sometime back. LOL, a lot of my gear is from trades. Works out well... I'm not into fancy dancy stuff, and once I find something I like, I kind of settle into it for a good while.

I really want a good RTA but can't get myself away from RDAs. Probably pick up the Reload if I catch it on sale. 75$ price tag isn't bad if it's worth it, flavor has to be on point.

In the mean time look at this huge bottle of Ripe...

I'm pretty trailer-park when it comes to RDAs. I use a cheap Mutation clone and Tsunami running various SS316 Clapton configurations wicked with Rayon for taste testing. They get the job done. Since tanks are my regular mode of vaping, I'm not keen on investing heavily in nice RDAs, though I'd love to have a Goon and TM24 sitting at my mixing station.

I've heard really good things about that one. WAYYYY out of my price range, LOL. Plus, I'm a MTL vaper, anyway.

I may be strange but I cant make my brain do MTL anymore. I bought the Mi-One to try it for a friend that wanted to quit smoking and it took me 20mins to use it as a MTL device.

Thank you for taking a minute to write about these things :)

I am a "low watt" vaper myself. I enjoyed the Goblin Mini with almost the same exact build. I was using 28ga Kanthal, 6 wraps, 2.5 ID at bout 12 Watts. It turned out that I really like the flavor generated by the side airflow of the UD Bellus and I ended up going with that using the same build.

The Merlin I really like. Like you say easy, easy to build on. Flavor is exceptional. I used 6 wraps of 24ga Kanthal, 2.5mm ID. I got it to wick well enough and not leak. But, like you, it was always "weepy." Speaking of the Merlin, Augvape announced they are releasing a 22mm version, supposedly this month. Externally, it looks like the original Merlin, but I haven't seen the deck.

The Ammit, I simply could not get the wicking right. It either dry hit or leaked.

I usually stick with things for a long time too. I would love to try some fancy dancy stuff, but I simply can't afford that. I do like to try new things. I should look into trades.

Thank you again! :)

I definitely hear you. I would love to try the Goon 22mm. It looks just right for me. They seem hard to find now, and of course are still quite expensive.

I am seriously considering a Derringer V1.2.

Thank you :)

Hadaly RDA, .7ohm 30/40 Fused clapton. Pretty good. For testing I'll also clip the tails of my wick almost flush with the coil. Easier to change out and also gives less break in period to test.
Hope that helps
Yes that is helpful, it does thank you so much! :)

I never thought of clipping the wick like that. That's an awesome idea! After all, one only needs enough to taste a few drops at a time and then make a fast change to try the new adjustment. AWESOME!

Definitely the Wasp Nano. I'm relatively new to vaping, about 6 months or so, but I've tried a whole lot of hardware. I just point this out to say that I haven't been exposed to some of the older attys. That said flavor has been my biggest pursuit since the beginning. I have also seen the value of being able to switch flavors at will because I'm rather picky and test a lot of juices.

I bought a few things tonight at the local shop including another goon v1.5. Mostly I bought the rda because my first one (which was a clone) is falling apart and because it looks fantastic on the tube mod I also picked up.

I made some aliens for both the new atty along with the Nano. I picked up a few new flavors and decided to try the Ripe Vapes Summer Vibes and The Merge Transmission (I *highly* recommend either, or both) back to back just for fun. What I noticed will shock you. Okay, I'm lieing. It may not keep you awake long enough to finish this sentence, but I digress.

The juice well on the Nano is far smaller in capacity versus the Goon. In almost any situation the Goon wins, but in this scenario the Nano is perfect.

There's less wicking in the Nano. Winner.

The flavor is better from the Nano. I don't even believe this is subjective. The Nano, with the right coil, power and wicking is superb. I can see a difference when you fire it (with the cap off) how well the coil vaporizers the liquid versus the Goon. That can be for a number of reasons and a combination of all of those. In any case, out of all of the attys I've purchased or tried, the Nano is the best for me with the considerations you listed.

my theory works less well for tank users but I've always wondered why people have a "testing" atty and a vaping atty. for me I test on what I vape with. seems to make the most sense to me, I currently use the Goon 1.5 as my daily vape so whatever juice I make I want it to taste great on that lol. If I am testing a bunch of flavors which is less often now as Ive tried most everything already and rarely make those big orders with lots of new flavors, but Ill clip the cotton a little shorter maybe like mentioned above but really a few toots isn't going to get you pointed in the right direction either since we all know cotton needs break in time no matter what kind you are using in my opinion anyway. Ive always said make enough to vape on it for a few hours to really get a feel for whats going on with it. mixing is an art and you have to get familiar with your paint... thats just me though everyone has a different ritual when it comes to mixing.
When I did use tanks I had a testing RDA but realized RDA's just taste better so why waste juice in a leaky tank lol. Tanks have upped their game since I was using them so I cant really speak on them anymore but but for RDA users I still dont get why you put yourself through all the trouble of having separate set up :p Im a creature of habit though I like things a certain way every time like clock work.

I use a peerless and a pulse 22 for my testing before that I had an old Tohb Atty from like 2014 laying around that I used but I hated wicking on it.
Most of the time I use half wicks but every now and then I just use which ever RDA I am vaping on flush it out with VG then drip a new single flavor tester on it. :) I can get lazy with my testing. :(
