Burnt taste without burning the cotton

Hello and thank you for reading. Hopefully I can explain it without confusion. I'm pretty new to vaping so bear with me if I get the "lingo" wrong. First I should say that I have a Smok QBox with a TFV8 Baby Tank. The max watts is 50 and i'm using V8 Baby-Q2 coils (0.4) currently. Mine came with 2 V8-Baby M2 (0.25) coils and I had an issue with both. I went to the local shop that I purchased my Mod and bought replacement coils (Q2) in a 5 pack. The guy at the shop replaced the first one for me and I watched diligently. It lasted for 3-4 days. I replaced it and took the steps exactly as he showed me... Primed it by putting juice on the side holes, dry drags, let it sit for a few minutes, then hit it. Instantly it tasted burnt. So I thought I did something wrong, tried again with the other 4 coils! These times I tried a few different things.. Poking holes in the cotton, letting it sit for an hour, doing dry hits and then blowing out excess juice, starting with a low watt and gradually going up... None of these things worked. I took apart one of the coils and NONE of the cotton had any burn marks at all but still tasted burnt. I've also tried using two different brands of e-juice. I'm really not sure what I'm doing wrong... Please let me know what you think it might be!

Is it possible you're confusing the taste of cotton with the taste of a burnt hit? Sometimes it's takes a little while for the cotton taste to go away on a new coil.

Maybe those coils can't handle thick juice (high vg). I don't use prebuilt coils so someone else will have to help there.

I'm honestly not sure if i'm confusing the taste... It's a really nasty taste and the first coil used from this same pack didn't have that taste. When he primed it, I took 3 dry hits and then hit it instantly and it was fine for a couple days. When I changed that one, it was black... I took it apart completely and cleaned out the tank multiple times with paper towels but I didn't go as far as watering it down. I'm wondering if it's possible the taste is coming from the last coil that was burned?

I hope you find the answer to this. My last box of 5 Smok coils are doing the same thing. Mine give off hat really bad taste and burn my throat like fire set in. I have been wondering if I got a batch of some cheap after market coils

Let me try to help you out here, being new to vaping and made a post a couple weeks here prior, I ran in the same problem as you did or still do. Let me start off with, the Q2 0.4 ohm coils, are meant for 40-80 W but best at 55-65W, however I found that with my high VG juices I can't go above 35/40 with that coil or it will taste either burned, and/or the tank starts leaking etc. My juices I am currently using are 80VG and 20 PG @ 3mg nic, but my kit came with the Q2 - 0.4 and the 0.6 ohm coil. But I was using juices prior to that, that were only 70/30 and I would get constantly a burnt taste when exhaling, needed to run that coil at around 58-62 for it to work, which you can't do with your mod if it's a 50W.

The first thing I did with my 0.4 was a hot water bath for 2 hours, this is what the guys recommended in my store, having the same experience as you did/do. Then after that, I rinsed them under ice cold water and closed the air holes. Blew in it around 5 or 6 times, wrapped it nice and neatly into a paper towel and let it dry like that over night. Next day I unwrapped the coil, primed it (I just read you only put juice in the side holes of your coils, put a huge dab on the top of the cotton in the middle, don't run it over the wire itself tho), filled the tank and placed it on my mod. I got the Smok AL85, not that it matters but I'll include it. Then I took about 4 or 5 dry hits, of course not pressing the firing button, let it stand for 15 minutes. After that, I turned my mod all the way down to 25W, and yes I am aware that the coil doesn't do anything at that wattage, but the reason I did that is the following, at this low wattage press the fire button but don't take a hit. Hold it for 1 second (if your mod shows that but I think most SMOK mod's do), blow out the vape/steam that comes out of the drip tip. Rinse and repeat another 3 or 4 times.

Now let it sit for another 5 minutes, and then take a hit. Again you probably getting nothing out of it, since the coil is not meant to be fired at that low wattage, but it primes the coil very well and apparently that line of coils seem to only work that way. Now go up by 3 aka 28 W, take a hit or two, up another 3, till you end up at the recommended starting wattage of 40 W. Take a couple hits from there, then go up by 5 till you reach the point were you like the vape and not have that burnt taste anymore.

I switched after a week to the 0.6 ohm ones, because I wasn't vaping at this high of wattage anyways, and my juices had the most flavor at around 30/35W. A week ago I switched to the x4 coils for the baby tank, after having tried the M2 coils but I didn't liked them much. Have to say so, that was the best decision I've ever made because the flavor is just amazing as well as the cloud production and my juices work very well with them.

Give it a try and see if my way gets you any better results.

Edit: just remembered, the last pack of Q2's 0.4s I purchased did have a factory defect, simply way of fixing that, I unscrewed the bottom pin of the coil, and took a look inside of it. The little coil/wire whatever you want to call it, was not correctly adjusted to the edge underneath the ohm ring. I took a screw driver and just pushed it underneath, screwed the pin back in and followed the method above. Maybe that's your issue as well, take a look and see how it goes. I normally also prep all my coils with little holes, since they last longer that way, but with the 0.4 you can't do that. It will always end up either leaking or getting a metal/burnt taste/flavor. Try it as stated above but without poking the holes in it, or give some other coils a shot. Another thing would be the juice itself, it's always hit or miss, some brands just have this nasty aftertaste, that can be sometimes mistaken as burnt, or if you have flavors like coffee/chocolate, I found after having tried over 250 juices, at my local store, 20 out of them tasted burned in general, or like burned popcorn, it could be something simple just like that. Might want to try different brands, or even different flavor profiles. Hope it helps.

Omg i cant believe anyone would go to such lengths to get a coil to work properly. Have you ever considered building?! Less time effort and $ than what your spending now and the reward is immediate flavor way beyond anything youve experienced from that beast

I am constantly seeing threads here and on another forum about the Smok coils and issues with them lasting only a few days and burnt hits and so on and so on.

My suggestion is to buy a different brand of tank, or look at an RTA and build your own coils.

Why my BB is on the shelf, I never got around to buying the RTA deck for it so it just sits. I didn't have as much patience with it as others. After two weeks it went on shelf.

I get over 5,000 puffs out of my Baby Beast X4 coils and I use High or MAX VG all the time. But I fire them at 25-30 Watts maximum and 27.5W is the sweet spot for me. I got 10,000 puffs out of one but that was not used like I normally do with chain vaping.

I have a smoke procolor with .15 ohm coils. I have the same problem if I take a hit of longer than about 5 seconds. I've gotten around this by taking shorter drags and lowering the wattage, to 40 watts from my preferred 70, and by letting my mod rest longer between drags - i.e., slowing down on the chain vaping. Still, it doesn't seem like that should be necessary. I second your call for help!

Unless you have done an autopsy on a coil that tastes burned you can't always see the cotton is charred. I had one recently I forgot to turn down the wattage when switching tanks and when I pulled the cotton I found it all burned in the center where it was not visible from the outside.

Just a little tip for anyone using the M2 coils in their big baby or baby beast tanks, whether they are .15 or .25 these coils are for the Stick V8 and the sweet spot is 35w as that is the output of the Stick V8. There is no adjustment on this mod, 5 clicks on, vape, 5 clicks off and I get 2 1/2 to 3 weeks out of these coils in the big baby tank. A couple times I've had the "burnt" taste after installing the new coil, but it goes away after about 10 puffs and doesn't come back, all my juice is 80/20 or max VG dessert flavor.
