Thinner wire question (from 26g to 28g or 30g)

Whilst I am happy with my current build, (SS316L, 26g, 3mm id, 9 wraps, 0.5mm spacing, dual coil @ 0.3ohm combined in Big Baby RBA with Native Wicks cotton minimal wicks @ 47w = flavour NIRVANA, no leaks, 1 week between wick changes and 8 months now on same coil!). I am looking to try some 28g or 30g coils for a faster ramp up but more importantly for a quicker cool-down as I can still hear hot juice on the coil after I've stopped sucking, even when I've let go the power before I've stopped sucking. I want to keep using between 8 and 10 wraps, maybe going from 3mm to 3.5mm for my id, but I see when using Steam-Engine that my expected ohms will be 1.6 to 1.8 per coil, giving me 0.8 to 0.9 ohms per dual coil set up. Does anyone have experience of just barely sub-ohming like this? If so - what was it like?

build it...and you will see......
But honestly yeah I vape anywhere from .6 to .9 as a general rule. not exactly MTL and not cloud bro territory either it's my sweet spot.this whole low sub ohming rash is a fairly a new development though it seems to have become the norm for a certain sector of vapers...but just like 3 years ago you couldn't even buy a regulated device that would fire if you built it below 1.2 ohms.....you had to use a mech to sub-ohm., and vaping below .5 was rare.So there are alot of vapers especially the guys who started years ago who vape in the range you are talking about.

I'm not near my PC but if you want a comparable vape to the 26awg build your going to have to go twisted wire..... im thinking 2x28 or 3x30.... should be able to get pretty close to the flavor producing surface area of the 26... but with less power robbing heat holding mass.
If YOUR Going WITH THE Smaller coil idea your going to need to reduce the air capacity if the system... flow can be as open as you want if you can reduce the amount of air to be heated.

Nice one. Many thanks. That would make a lot of sense actually as I stated vaping about 2 or 3 years ago, but only building for 1.5-2 years and most of my knowledge gleaned from reading forums and that. Only now being at the point of becoming more adventurous if you like, hence more questions! Great informative answer by the way, cheers.

Thanks for the answer, tbh I was looking to keep the build simple with just a plain old round wire, I hadn't really thought of using a twisted wire or anything like that. I was actually considering increasing my id from 3 to 3.5 mm to compensate for any loss of surface area from using a thinner wire. I run my airflow quite restricted already as I find a get better flavour that way and open or closed it seems to have had very little effect on the slow cool down of the 26g, hence the consideration of thinner wire as a potential remedy - increasing ramp-up / cool-down time. Any ideas involving simple wires greatly appreciated - father of 2 active kids meaning v limited time to indulge in my hobby!

yeah the thing I've learned so far is ......try everything especially the things you don't think you'd like...you get surprised.

My son recently tried out 26ga SS, but he wasn't happy with the slow ramp-up; he's used to 28ga SS (he seems to find the taste of kanthal disagreeable). So, after a full day of trying out 26ga, I re-coiled that tank for him using 28ga, and he's back to happy vaping with that.

Don't discount trying odd-number sizes -- when I was first starting with coil building, I was using very fine-gauge wire, since I was putting coils in tiny clearos... so I used some 30ga when I got my first Kayfun (RBA), and it was ok, but it has such a high resistance, I had very few wraps, and wasn't really happy with it. Tried out 28ga, wasn't happy with the slow ramp-up, since I'm a low-wattage vaper. Tried out some 29ga, and bingo! Perfect vape for me.

Hi. I have to agree with him, I don't like the taste of Kanthal too. I find that SS gives a much better, cleaner taste all round.

I've not avoided odd number, simply that a jump of 2 gauges was more likely to give enough difference to notice!

How may wraps and what size id did you use when you wrapped his 28g for him?

I always use a 3/32 drillbit to wrap coils, stick to it religiously, because I can wick that size perfectly -- used it for over 3 yrs. I think it's 2.38mm or something like that. I think I used 6 wraps with the 26ga, and either 6 or 7 with the 28ga; I can't recall exactly; it was right before I was about to make a big dinner, so i was hurrying and just trying to get it done -- then there was a plumbing SNAFU, had to take a 30min hiatus right smack in the middle when the potato peelings clogged up the disposal/drain and the ol man had to go get some Liquid Plumber since the plunger wasn't helping at all. *sigh* It's really been an evening... and now this big ass hurricane about to fall on us. But I think it was... 6 wraps; that seems to be the upshot of the last interaction I had with steam-engine.org.

Wow! And I thought that MY life is hectic - you make me feel positively motionless!! LOL

Well, I'm a housewife, so a lot of my life looks like "Lady of Leisure".. :giggle: (I generally rise at the crack o'noon ;)) I just HATE when shit like that happens when I'm TRYING to cook a good meal; I had planned tonight's dinner for a few days, and it still tasted just fine, but having my kitchen sink clogged and delaying dinner for 45 minutes (when it was already going to be a somewhat late dinner) definitely took all the damn fun out of it!

For me.... the thinner the wire the smaller the ID.... at a given ohm on a given wire surface areas are equal regardless the ID.. as surface area of the wire us determined by the diameter and length of the wire.. not the size of the loops you form it into.... but a coil built at a smaller Id will cover more wick surface.

I prefer simple builds also...... there's nothing complex about twisting 2 to 4 strands if wire together and wrapping that into a cpil.. unless you make it so. I just found early on I prefer the vape from two small wires twisted vs 1 big wire....

So ... tried the 30g with 3.5mm id 9wraps hitting 0.9ohms, whilst it ramped swiftly and cooled down nicely it was just too thin and fragile. A REAL fiddle to space the coils with both a screw and a jig then pulling out to space and then too wibbly wobbly when mounting and when wicking. Took me AGES to get it right and the resulting flavour was just meh! A real anticlimax! Dropped down to the 28g with the same setup achieving 0.6ohms and this gave me a lovely stable coil that could be mounted and wicked simply. To be honest I think I’ve found my “sweet spot” coiling! More flavour than the 26 or the 30 and is SWEEEEEEET in both TC & VW. Ramps quickly, cools quickly, gets to temp nicely allowing nice long 3sec plus pulls if I want in both modes, (45w 200°C or 46.8w), on Alien 220 with Big Baby Beast and twin coil RBA. I’ve found my happy place!!!!!!!!!

My last build of naked 9 wrap 26g Kanthal coils clocked in at .98. The taste was still heaven at 85w. In fact, the only reason I recoiled was to put in a quad coil setup for lower res since I want to go a bit higher on the wattage. (Can't go to 112w on a .98 ohm coil - my box won't let me go over 9 volts.) I'm vaping slotter pop OGB which is a green apple juice (max VG), and this juice tastes almost like cinnamon-apple when warm.

I vape MTL and find a single coil 28AWG SS 2.5mm 6 wrap spaced, 0.6 ohm build gives me nice flavor in my SXK doggy style or kayfuns and a quick ramp up and cool down. Sounds like you've discovered 28 awg is a great size for the same reasons.

I've found the same thing. I don't like when the coil seems fragile. In the beginning I bent some premade coils that were 32/40 claptons just by being heavy-handed. I prefer 28g with varying wrap sizes.

A few months ago I did a dual coil build with a pair of simple tigers. The build ohmed out at .92 ohms in my Purge Mods Maelstrom RDA. For this build I used one strand of 28g Kanthal A1 round wire and one strand of .1×.3 Kanthal A1 ribbon wire. I twisted the strands together tightly like it's supposed to. Made it to 12 wraps per coil (technically, only 11.5 wraps). Kanthal is really springy so very difficult to get these coils to go back to their original shape after you mount them. I did not yet have my set of Coil Master Ceramic Sticks at the time. Wicking/rewicking them also required holding these coils into place by using my fingernails. I was vaping this build at ~14.5 volts (four batteries in series) on a tube mech. It was more of a cloud chaser's build of course, but turned out to be surprisingly very flavorful nonetheless. At 16.8 volts (all four batteries fully charged) it added the nice taste of burned car tyres.

Looks like a weapon to me. Maybe could be used as a cattle prod.
It's my Purge Mods Maelstrom brass and matching Purge Mods Maelstrom RDA. Equipped with three Purge Mods Assassin extension tubes so yeah... only just a tiny little bit dangerous because with all four VTC5A batteries fully charged it easily allows you to get throat fucked by satan. :)
