Hi, I'm Tom (Screen Name: 5150sick)

Many of you already know me and know that I am disabled and live with debilitating pain from an automobile accident that happened in 1993.

The results were two broken forearms (both bones), a broken right femur, shattered left hip and pelvis, broken right wrist and ankle, collapsed lung, and concussion.

Everything healed except the left hip so I had it fused in 1994.
Come 2005 my back was blown out from using it to walk instead of my left hip so I found a doctor that broke down the hip fusion and changed it into a hip replacement.
I moved from Baltimore to Central Florida in 2009

Since then I have had to have not one but TWO hip revision surgeries where they replace the hip replacement.
The first revision was because the stem part broke and the second was because the first one got infected.

I figured I'd start this thread in case anybody else wants to share their experiences or to encourage one another if we are having painful days.

I'm sorry to hear about your accident and your pain. I don't have physical ailments but I do deal with anxiety and panic attacks. Vaping honestly helps with those things for me. :)

My son is currently both working and going to school, so although he's now vaping instead of smoking, he's steadfastly refusing to get involved in something like a vaper's forum, just doesn't have the time, and he knows it would be a distraction. But, he deals with constant pain: he had an injury to his hip about 10 yrs ago, in which a piece of the cartilage in it called the "labrum" was torn -- there was actually a piece of it torn free, riding around in his hip, causing ungodly pain. So, he finally had an operation, to repair it. They *may* have repaired that damage... but caused some all-new damage, now to the NERVES.... so now, along with occasional pain inside the hip, he also deals with near-constant nerve pain that he says feels like his leg is ON FIRE, from the hip to the knee. He takes a drug called Neurontin (sp?), which he says helps, but doesn't completely eliminate the pain. He also sometimes has to take a double-dose of Alleve, for the actual hip pain; he says ibuprofen doesn't touch it.

The docs have told him this is permanent; I maintain that nerves DO heal, regenerate, whatever, but it does take a very long time -- years, if not sometimes decades. I've learned this the hard way -- cuts to my hands and fingers that severely damaged nerves, causing anything from numbness to burning/itching pain.... but the last one, which caused the burning/itching in the side of my right hand thx to a large cut on the outside edge of my wrist, has finally eased; I haven't felt the burning/itching in a few years now. So there may be hope for my son, but it will take a very long time arriving... if at all. :(

Pain sucks.
I myself have crps formaly known as RSD. Medical name: Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. I have it in my right leg and foot and it is starting to spread to my left leg. I have a intrathecal pain pump now to save my liver from all the pills I was taken. If you go by that stupid pain graph with the faces we shoot to keep my pain level at a 4. Then comes my back issues from walking the way I did and sometimes do. I have to keep working due to the fact my wife is waiting for her disability claim, that has been 5 years. I also am raising my grandkids so I don't see me doing what the doctors want and stop working anytime soon. Just a quick overview. I still think of myself as lucky. I know people stuck in bed because of this. So I am thankful it hasn't got to that point yet.

Feb. 1990 a car hit mine and ricocheted into to 2 trees like a pinball, Feb 1991 a car rear ended me, My car was stopped - he was going est. 50 mph, and pushed me up onto a hill. 1st one did some cervical spine damage that was still healing, 2nd compounded original damage. Dr. told me it would get better but there was nerve damage that would affect me long term. I've been pretty lucky over the last decade, problems came and went periodically. Now some stay, some don't. Sometimes my hands are bad, so I have to hold my vape certain ways or use different fingers to fire mod. I'm okay with it, I'm on my feet and functional. Helps to read stories like all of yours to remind me on the bad days how lucky I am. Great thread idea, thanks.:)

A very high dose of Gabapentin should help with the nerves in his knee. I would ask about the MBB and Ablation which are strictly directed at the nerves.

I'm sure you've already Googled everything. Just thought I'd mention these.

I have way too many psychiatric and back pain issues to list. Also COPD (emphysema) and bursitis.

@AndriaD My biggest pains is the nerves extending from my lower lumbar through my hips and legs. I had a series of shots to begin. Epidurals, Medial Branch Block and Radiofrequency Ablation. The latter two addressed my nerve issues, thank goodness. But it didn't last as long as we had hoped. I had a new procedure called AccuraScope. Part of that procedure was a Selective Branch Block. My nerve damage was so severe they had to cartarize a majority of my nerves in addition to removing the inside of my disc at L4 & L5.

I was given 3 medications which seem to help a lot with the pain:
Gabapentin 600mg. Folks take 1,800mg and more. This is a nerve blocker. I see him this week. I hope he doubles the dosage.
Meloxicam 15mg is a strong anti-inflammatory. One ea morning.
Then there's Tizanidine ea 8hrs for muscle spasms. For me, just one pill knocks me out.

I believe you should ask his doc about these. A very high dose of Gabapentin should help with the nerves in his knee. I would ask about the MBB and Ablation which are strictly directed at the nerves.

I'm sure you've already Googled everything. Just thought I'd mention these.

Gabapentin and neurontin are the same thing. He's asked about Lyrica, but the doc told him if the neurontin only helped a little, the Lyrica wouldn't help at all. He's allergic to meloxicam.

I have a TEN'S Unit. What a blessing it is. I'm interested to hear what those of you who have one thinks about it.
When my back feels like it's about to break hubby applies 4 electrodes. One on each side of my L4 & L5 and 2 on my hips where the painful nerve damage is. It says 15-30 min max. I go for 45 minutes. I'll nap for a while and get up without much discomfort at all. I just ordered a bag of large and small pads. I've not seen the control unit yet. But if I need one that has more than 4 contacts on the unit, I'll buy it. I was lucky on this one. It's a refurb. Got it for $139. I looked it up and the unit is about $450+/-.

Very good thread, Sick

My son is just about to get one of those, so it's good to know how effective it is! :)

I guess I'll join. I suffer with a clusterfuck of mental illness. Although not physically painful the emotional, mental, spiritual damage and what not has been hard to deal with and is quite painful. I've also been battling an addiction of some sort for 20 years. I'm currently in a 12 step recovery program and am approaching 4 months sober. That's awesome and all but i'm really facing my illness for the first time and it's tough and scary. Aaanyways I'm looking into therapy and more support groups lol maybe too much information and taboo but it's disabling none the less..all I can do is stay strong and strive to get better. I sympathize with you all. God bless.

Andria, You will be overjoyed now much pain it will relieve for him. Start at a low frequency then increase it to where it's comfortable for him.

Last time Chuck put two in the same lumbar region and the nerve pain was more toward my ass and about dead center of my upper butt cheeks is where he put the other two. I had him turn the power a little higher this time. He started laughing hysterically. I asked him what was so funny. He kept laughing and finally blurted out that my butt cheeks were taking turns shaking - like Jello. I'm glad he had a good laugh.

(If he had taken a video of it I would kicked him in the nuts.) :giggle:

You're right, it's extremely disabling... If you find any inclination to go back to smoking because of it, consider WTA instead -- it can help A LOT, costs a hell of a lot less than cigarettes, and doesn't allow those nasty coffin nails to get their hooks back in.

I had to have that therapy when I was a teenager. Was amazing how much much better I felt after those sessions. After placing electrodes they would put a pad on my back/hips and put 10lb warm wet sandbag on top. Add warm wet towel to your treatment even if you don't have a sandbag or weight. Relaxes muscles and soothes nerves.

Kudos, well done. Don't stress over a few cigs. :)

Exactly Letitia. I failed to mention that he not STRESS over his nicotine cravings. Matty knows what his options are. It isn't something to worry about right now. That comes last. First, let Jesus and your 12 step friends lift a load off. Spill your guts to your therapist. You have to!

This is my bio which is a much longer version of what got me to the point where I started vaping:

http://vapingunderground.com/threads/5150sick.622/

My Anxiety and P.T.S.D. is from the car accident, the following traumas from those injuries, along with the time I was on the shitty end of a home invasion / attempted murder along with an ex girlfriend from back in August 2001.

I edited my name and personal info out of the local newspaper article below:

Untitled000edit.jpg Untitled001edit.jpg Untitled002edit.jpg Untitled003edit.jpg

I knew a LOT of people in the Baltimore County Detention Center because a LOT of my childhood friends got into drugs really bad.
In less than three days I had my buddy Rich call and put the Kenny Jones kid on the phone who apologized to me numerous times.
The Ex boyfriend (T. O'Halloran) of my Ex girlfriend Jen was the mastermind and got the other dude all spaced out on hallucinogenics.

My cousin Lisa's husband just happened to be the O'Halloran guys cell mate and had him so scared of me because of the friends I had that the dude totally panicked and sent the homicide detectives to my house telling them he was afraid for his life... In PRISON!!!

Hey Tom!
Great idea for a thread bro.

Most know but for those that don't:

7 years ago -my anniversary just passed on 9/13.
I was jogging when I was hit by a four door Toyota tundra traveling at 65mph(according to the DOT ANALYSIS).
I was in a coma 3 weeks, had a subdural hematoma in my frontal lobe, severed femoral artery, severe spine at the t12/l1 and shattered my femor, tibia and fibula.
After several months in ICU followed by physical and occupational therapy I was left with only being rendered a paraplegic. After that experience I went back to school to earn my electrical engineering degree. The head injury helped -lol. I've also met my future wife(through this forum), and have gotten most of my life back together.

Alot of things in life had to come together to keep me on this planet. Luckily an off duty emt from a chemical plant saw the entire thing and pulled over and saved my life.
I do have chronic phantom pain and spasms; but, other than that life is always looking up.... And so am I :)

I changed the threads name to: "Vapers living with disabilities and/or pain, psychological issues, etc.."

I want as many people as possible who would like to share to be able too.

I am really hoping that this thread will take off and help others see that no matter how bad you have it there is always someone who has it worse off then you do.

I always made sure to meet as many people on my floor when I spent time at the hospital as I could for this reason.

Do you still visit the hospital?

I did up until i moved. Myself and another patient started a 'mentor' program. We met up with patients and families to help them any way we could. I really miss being able to do that.

My own problems are pretty minor compared to a lot already mentioned... but I've struggled with depression for pretty much my entire life; although I started smoking at 13 to be "cool", I'm sure it was a major reason I didn't self-destruct at a very young age, and I'm also sure that it helped me get thru high school; it seems clear now that I suffered what is now known as ADD, though back then (the 70s) it was called laziness, unmotivated, etc. Actually it was flat out boredom; summer-school, which goes 3 times faster than normal school, always got me A's, because it went fast enough to hold my attention. Given the major post-partum depression I suffered after my son's birth, and the major depression I suffered while also suffering PTSD and early-onset peri-menopause, it's clear that my brain's biochemistry has always been pretty fucked up, and has gotten worse throughout my life. Effexor and a very competent therapist, not to mention a supportive spouse, got me thru it.

A couple of times I seriously tried to quit smoking, using the patch; both times, after about a week, both husband and son were begging me to smoke, I became so absolutely deranged -- again with the fucked-up brain chemistry. When I started vaping, I really had no interest in nor intention of quitting smoking; I merely wanted a way to not need to hang around outdoors in the cold... but when I discovered what an amazing substitute vaping is, I thought I'd be a plain damn fool to pass up such a golden opportunity to become what I'd wanted to be for so long: a non-smoker. The first time, in February 2014, it was like falling off a log: I kept competing with myself, to see if I could smoke less, or at least not more, than the previous day... and it just kept working, number of cigarettes each day going down and down until finally, I was at one a day, for the last 3 days... and I realized that if I could deal with just one a day, I could probably deal just as well without it -- and I was right. No real cravings, no real trauma, just miraculous freedom from 39 yrs of smoker's prison.

Then, after nearly 4 months of that miraculous freedom, I suffered acute appendicitis, and the requisite emergency appendectomy. The surgery went fine; and after 45 mins of gen'l anesthesia, I suffered ZERO coughing or congestion afterward, my lungs were clear as a bell -- a far cry from the god-awful breathing treatments I had to endure after FIVE mins of gen'l anesthesia for my son's caesarian birth, when I had been a smoker for just 14 yrs. I went home the same day as my appendectomy, on top of the world -- probably still high from morphine and the anesthetic. :giggle: Then, my IBS let me know that it was NOT happy to have had a septic appendix which ruptured and required surgical removal, and for 4 days, I couldn't eat, drink... or vape... I was much too sick. After my stomach finally emptied itself out, I slowly began feeling a bit better, though weak as a newborn kitten.. and everything tasted FOUL, after 4 days of nothing. I kept trying to eat, but it tasted bad. And even my vape, after 4 days away from it, tasted just awful... so of course my addicted brain said SMOKE! SMOKE NOW! RIGHT FUCKING NOW! and I was tired of fighting with it, so I did... I thought, maybe a couple weeks... but it took a month to peel those claws back out of my flesh and get back to vape only.

But I finally succeeded, and became once again and very happily smoke-free... for about 10 days, when those fucking cravings came back, slapping me right upside the head. I might have succumbed yet again... but I had had the foresight to acquire some WTA, during my dual-use relapse, so the next day, I added some to my vape when I got up and started vaping.... and later that night, I realized I had not suffered a single craving all day. That shit really works! It took me 15 months to get free of it, with a steady and gradual weaning-down, but in March 2016 I was finally back to nicotine-only, and having no cravings at all.

It's been a long road to become a happy, long-term non-smoker... but I am so damn delighted to finally be one. So I really don't care if y'all don't like that I vape at 9.5 watts, high-PG, with a draw like sucking a golf ball thru a garden hose... it works for me.

Hey Tom....have you ever tried that CBD for anxiety ???? well seeing as how 90% of sczhoprenics smoke and 60% -70% of bipolar people smoke,,,and most vapers are ex-smokers........I'd say there's a damn good chance most vapers suffer from some sort of psycological pain.

By the way.

At this moment in time my pain level is about a 3.

I am happy with that.
Anything under a 5 is mission accomplished for me.

For the anxiety I'm prescribed clonazepam 1mg two times daily as needed.

My doc refuses to prescribe me any of the pams because I could develop a dependence..Really sucks as they really do help with anxiety and I'm left to my own devices. Some days I NEED MEDS for anxiety and I don't have any :( it's like the doctor just says "suffer" without actually saying it.

yeah I get the same thing....
The DEA and knee jerk drug laws have doctors scared to prescribe medications to people who actually need them.
Hell I have to show my drivers license to buy cold medicines....
All purchases are tracked in a database and the amount is limited....

A number of years ago, I suffered a bad fall and hit the pavement so hard that my glasses left my face, hit the pavement and bounced right back on. Dislocated every bone in my right hand.

Then they discovered that I had not only given myself whiplash, I had also done a great job on my lower spinal cord.

Lots of therapy stopped the spasms I was getting in my neck from "Referred Pain" and I had some nerve clusters burned off so I could walk without pain.

All of that being said, the pain is now controlled with a combination of pain meds but my TENS device when needed.

Then I started suffering from Pancreatitis and they discovered a mass in my pancreas so I was off to have the "Whipple Procedure" performed (I only learned after the fact that this procedure is as risky a qaudruple bypass and after 10 days, I left the hospital without a chunk of my pancreas and my gallbladder and with some severe modifications to my digestive system.

Then my prostate had to go. That was an easy one which was done using a robot and I was out and back to my normal routine in 24 hours.

Not to mention my surgery to repair my Hiatal Hernia, That one had me screwed up for over a month but at least I can eat without pain now.

And now the doc's are monitoring 3 other Hernia's and will operate if they ever start causing me issues.

And with all of that, I am still better off than 5150sickand f1r3b1rd:(

Yeah, all the crap they've both been thru really puts things into perspective. So I'll count my blessings and be happy that most of my own problems are "in my head" (or brain, actually), and, for the moment at least, aren't troubling me too much.

I need to track down a medical grade tens unit.
Not one of those pieces of shit Chinese things that takes batteries or plugs in with a usb cord but a REAL tens unit that plugs into the wall at 120 volts.
My friend Dominick had one when i lived up North because he was born with a back disorder.
He let me borrow it for about six months and it worked just like the ones at physical therapy.
It was absolutely amazing.
When he asked for it back i tried to talk him into selling it but he needed it so i gave it back and told him if he ever got rid of it let me know first.

Just food for thought, but unless you're already prescribed something like Zoloft,, Effexor, or anything along those lines, a daily dosage of something for anxiety/depression could help. If you feel that medicine is the route you need, they're available in non-addictive meds. It can be a slippery slope when you're new in recovery. Most doctors respect that, and want to help you stay sober. Congrats on your 4 months! :)

If you feel that medicine is the route you need, they're available in non-addictive meds. It can be a slippery slope when you're new in recovery. Most doctors respect that, and want to help you stay sober. Congrats on your 4 months! :)

Yeah they've recently switched me from one anti-psychotic med to another..So I can hopefully loose some weight it's been a bit of a rough transistion with new side effects and what not. I've also started doing some self-help CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) basically just getting out of the apartment and facing my fears (exposure therapy) it's super uncomfortable lol I'm actually going for a coffee with a friend for the first time since entering a recovery program and im sweating and nervous lol but yeah we'll see how that goes if I make little to no progress my doctor and I will consider another medication to combine with this new one. But we gotta see how the new goes and how I can do managing on my own..it's hard explaining to people my struggle so I usually don't bother. They just don't seem to understand plus the stigma and all that.

Everyone has some type of fear, everyone thinks that fear isn't worth mentioning. Fear is a real bitch. I've been in your shoes, and most people are really receptive. For those that aren't, it's ok, they simply might not know how to respond, and they don't have to. Your friend will likely just be really happy to spend some time with you. Much like this thread, you never know who you might be helping. There's some really good stuff in this thread.

Sorry about your pain. I have seen real TENS units for sale in the past on local Facebook buy sell trade groups.

I feel sad for all of you guys who have to live with chronic pain. I have some from the autoimmune liver disease but its nothing compared to all of you guys.

@Matty Vapes My son takes Valerian Root 450mg for night time anxiety/sleep. It seems to work well for him. His doctor would prescribe him a anti anxiety but he prefers the root. He also takes Adderal and Prosac. His condition is complex as well. I won't go into it but he is almost house bound.

@Matty Vapes Most sedatives can be addictive. In your situation they don't want you cross-addicting.

Believe it or not, Wellbutrin is also used as a means help smokers stop smoking. Oddly, I find that I don't vape as much. I find that when I do vape, I need max vg to satisfy me. I find dense vapor quite satisfying.

I tried that year's ago (before Chantix) to try to quit smoking.

It kept giving me out of body experiences and I had to drop it after a few weeks

One weird thing from it though: it totally killed me desire to drink hard liquor and have had only a few sips since then, and it has been well over 15 years now

yeah I get the same thing....
The DEA and knee jerk drug laws have doctors scared to prescribe medications to people who actually need them.
Hell I have to show my drivers license to buy cold medicines....
All purchases are tracked in a database and the amount is limited....

The opiods is the big issue right now. I can't find one doctor, including my PCP of 48 years that will prescribe it. You pretty much have to have a new broken leg, arm or chest injury, etc. for them to prescribe it for pain. Even then, they will only dispense small amounts and maybe 1 refill, depending on the severity of the Dx since percocet and hydrocodone for example are very addictive.

Me too, Lucy. I lost the intense desire for a smoke, now vaping, AND my alcohol consumption.

Moving back in with my ex-husband to care for his elderly mother had me cutting back . I eventually lost the desire to be hammered every night. Thank God!
