Feeling pretty proud of myself right now. Yesterday I successfully made and fired up coils I built myself. I have been practicing a lot but always had a hard time getting the coils exact for a dual set up. I had used up all my 24g kanthal and only had 20g left. So I gave it a try and it worked perfectly! They are exactly the same and ohm at .13! They are very basic and not the prettiest but we all start somewhere! The sky is the limit now!!!

Yes, center and align them as perfect as possible, makes for excellent pictures! Good Work though!

Ahhh, my fav coils or as i call em k.i.s.s
Take your driver and shimmy them to the center Til the are parrelell to each other. Take a look from the top, easiest way....like this...

Don't get crazy over what I say have to say because I get anal about getting it as perfect as I can!

No worries, I always ask for honest opinions. I need to learn the right way to do this so never apologize for being honest!

I understand that reluctance to mess with a perfect set once you get them in there, lol

But after you get used to working with them, you will feel more confident :)

Not silly at all - it's a natural reaction. But most coils are a lot more resilient than we give them credit for. Don't be afraid to manipulate them to where you want them to be. A lot of this is just trial and error. If something doesn't work, just don't do it again. That'll be one more thing that you've learned.

I think Chef just wrote my biography... o_O

Mine too...but now I know I can just say “I learned a lot” rather than “I royally f#%^ed that up”. Although I can say I definitely learned the aerodynamics and flight patterns of many many different coil builds...and spools of wire...and a battery or two....not to mention the drill, yeah...I’m gonna shut up now. Welcome to the dark side @Skullzz!

You Pros got any tips on how to keep the coil in the drill chuck? I make an l and put each core into the slit of the Chuck but it keeps breaking. I start by trying to make a foot and after all the breaks I only get about 6 inches

i found the trick is to go slow when a drill is used the wire can build up friction resistance which can cause a break but admittedly it has been a while since i needed to use my drill for coil making.

Untrue. I use the full 2900RPM when making most coils. Breakage will occur if the opposite ends aren't spinning freely, if the wires aren't straight in the chuck, or if the drill is not straight with the line of the wire.

Okay, #1: Lose the bobby pin.

The red line shows a straight line from your chuck. Your wire is angled, causing breakage.

The wire NEEDS to be straight, like this:

Lose the plastic piece. It's not stable, and is causing vibrations which will add to breakage. Also, turn your swivels around. No need for the key ring on this side, it should be on the other side.

The right way to do something is to safely achieve a finished product and something doesn't have to be 100% aligned to work correctly but I strive to achieve perfection in everything I do. So that is just my way and not the only way!

What is that your key ring is attached to? I have it on that plastic piece only cuz I don't know where else to attach my swivel but I will try removing it and attaching it somewhere else

Untrue. I use the full 2900RPM when making most coils.

When I am making coils I start off slow and then put the hammer down. Once it is started going fast makes it easier to keep a nice tight winding. (Clapton Wire) Only drawback is that sometimes the fingers get a but hot from the friction on the wires!

It's a Spin LT, but you don't need to use one. Just replace the plastic with an eye hook.

Well, yeah - I start of slow for the first 2 or 3 wraps, then open it up. I just hold on to the spool, so no need to get friction burns from holding on to the wire. Except for aliens, of course. But those need to be held fairly loosely, so there's no real friction to speak of.

Cool. I'm sure there are better ways to do this, but these have been working out well for me so far.

I freehand rather than use a swivel system, so, the techniques are probably not compatible for these fixes, but I start out with my cores not centered..I use one of the the flat sections of the chuck to hold the wires

Then after about an inch or so of wrapping I remove the wire and center it.

Wow, making Clapton’s looks so complicated....what are the basic tools I will need to start Claptons? Not going to start them right now, but want to start getting things together for when I am ready.....

I buy mine by the spool. A lot easier for me. But just don't have the time to construct my own. Or the patience really.lol

For the core wire, what gauge is best to use? Would that be like a 22 or 24g kanthal? I like to use the bigger wires for some reason so could the 20g even be used as core?

I was looking on Lightening Vapes website and they have a tool called the Deadalus by AvidArtisan....is that worth the investment? If so would it be better to just get the coil jig or should I buy it with the drill? TIA!

It really depends on the end resistance you're looking for. There are numerous alloy/gauge/wraps/diameter combinations that you can use to achieve your goal.

Whatever you like for single-core claptons. I prefer fused claptons, and personally think they vape at a whole next level than simple claptons. I would use 26 and smaller for fused.

I usually like to keep my ohms around .13-.15

I don't think it is, but some people like it. I've read in posts where it breaks kinda easily.
JM2C YMMV

An option rather than getting/using swivels is to just put a 90° angle (Right Angle) in your core wire for the chuck of the drill to hold in place and leave the opposite end loose if you’re not doing a really long strand. When I started learning, it was easier for me to practice using thicker wire...say, 24ga core and 32ga Wrap, then graduated to 24ga core with 36ga wrap and then got to where I was comfortable using 26 and 28ga cores with 36ga wrap.

Beware of lightning vapes wire and K Bee wire. They aren’t quite as bad as they used to be, but are still pretty far with being consistent with the quality of their wire. I used to have to wash my lightning Vapes wire before using it because it was dirty and would constantly find places along the wire where it would get thinner and thicker along the spool. Temco Industrial is my preferred brand but they can sometimes be back ordered for a while. Coil Society and Master of Clouds are good quality brands for decent prices that I can personally vouch for.

Word. KBee SS isn't as bad as their kanthal, but the LV is just plain filthy. Also, the LV higher gauges are incredibly inconsistent in the milling. It's a major PITA trying to Clapton anything with their 36 or 38 gauge wires. Always wants to backtrack because of the varying diameters within the same spool.

For any coil references I'd definitely listen to Chef and toad. They make some amazing coils.

Crazy Chef has put a lot more miles on his drill than I have. Plus, he was already upgraded to version 2. I am still working with my original software.

I, on the other hand, am a hack that figured out how to make some cool shit by wasting countless hours cussing at lifeless snarls of wire.

If all you did was snarl, you’re ahead of the game. Try rushing to a hardware store to buy a wall patch before your significant other gets home only to get a text message on the way home asking why there is a drill-shaped hole in the wall!
