30 year + smoker trying to quit

Hi all! I have been smoking for most of my life. I quit for 8 months once using a cheap vape pen I had bought on ebay. When it died I couldn't find a good replacement. Ultimately I went back to smoking.

I have been reading on multiple forums and review sites trying to find a long term quality solution. Unfortunately I feel overwhelmed by all the different mods, kits, tanks, coils, ect.

I was concidering a joyetech cuboid 150w and aspire nautilus mini. However, what sounds good on one forum or review is complete garbage on another.

I would like to purchase something ASAP do to health issues and other personal reasons.

I am hoping that somebody can point me in the right direction with a specific build/setup. If there is a solid ready to go setup I'm up for that. If I need to mix and match I'm up for that. Here is what I am looking for. Be very specific with brand and model.

Mod and/or kit
Tank
Fluid
Future proof/quailty/upgradable?
Vendor if you know a good one.

Again, this is meant to aid in quitting smoking. I would prefer it to be semi future proof as I don't want to replace it on a regular basis. I don't mind if I have to do basic maintenance such as, coil replacement or rebuilds.

I am not too concerned about cost as smoking cost me around $200 a month. Not to mention the health cost, both dental and medical.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to VU Zaedon - and congratulations on looking to take charge of your health

The Nautilus Mini is a great little tank and a long-time favorite to help get folks off of cigarettes - and the price is right

Quitting smoking with vaping is a journey - and it is difficult for most folks to find exactly the right juices and a rig that will suit them on their first day of vaping and beyond

While I understand not wanting to get caught up in "buying new gear every week" it is important to have more than one set up - as even the best gear can let you down at the wrong time

I really don't know much about the Cuboid - I do know a lot of folks love it though

The Nautilus is probably a great first choice though - others will be along to give their two cents, lol

I am a smoker trying to quit who probably has to wait a little longer to buy gear so I know where you are coming from.

Two things to remember:

1) Battery safety - if you buy a multiple battery mod, the batteries need to be married. In other words, they and only they go in the same devices throughout their lives never going into a device without their partner (s) or with other batteries not part of the marriage. You should stick with either LG, Samsung, or Sony batteries since off label batteries merely rewrap battery makers' batteries as their own and haven't exaggerate their performance.

2) Atomizer - MTL (Mouth To Lung) versus DL (Direct Lung) vaping. MTL is slow tight pulling similar to a cigarette whereas DL is a massive amount of vape similar to a xxxx hit or hookah. Also, the difference between pre-made versus rebuildable coils. You probably don't have the skills to rebuild coils so you should start out with a MTL atty (atomizer) that uses store bought replacement coils at first until you do.

I get that having multiple setups is a good idea. I just would prefer to have multiples of a proven/trusted setup. Maybe something adjustable? I just need to find something that will work and is dependable. Then i'll order two so I have a backup.

The Nautilus seems to be good quality. It appears to do well for most.

The joyetech cuboid 150w gets mixed reviews. It seems that all mods get mixed reviews.

Juice, I have no clue what brand or flavor to even try. Before i used some random tobacco flavored juice.

Thanks again for your feedback!

The batteries and charger I have figured out. I'm an LG guy and will buy from a local supplier to ensure I receive authentic batteries.

I am definitely thinking MTL. I also don't mind rebuilding coils. My background is pretty diverse providing a pretty solid skill set. In my younger years I worked 4 yrs as an auto tech. Then I did electronic repair for a couple of years. Then I got into management for a long while before going back to school to earn degrees in both business management and computer science. Then l took a strange turn and started a roofing and home improvement company with my contractor brother (my current employment). I also enjoy radio control cars, truck, planes and helicopters. Ecspecially building them. So, rebuilding coils is probably within my skill set.

Thanks for your input!

Then you probably already know about the reason for battery marriage.

It shouldn't take you long to learn how to rebuild coils then and plenty of help on this site for that if you ever need it or just wish to speed up the learning process.

The following is marketed as the latest and greatest MTL rebuildable atty but not much feedback yet and not sure if it is in the larger non-EU size yet but seems to be the winner. The Nautilus ones take pre-made coils whereas this one is designed for rebuilds.

http://digiflavor.com/project/siren2/

Smok (https://www.smoktech.com/) has some of the largest selection of high tech mass produced mods out there but some people have had warranty issues so you especially might want to buy from a US seller.

illumn.com imrbatteries.com and orbtronic.com are three reputable battery vendors here.

I am thinking Aspire Nautilus, 2x Joyetech cuboid, and a digiflavor siren 2 ( with coil and wick material ). This way I can try both of these tanks.

Any specific brands of juice ( with nicotine ) considered a solid brand?

Juice taste depends on so many things. A brand someone likes might not be good for you. I would suggest going to a local vape store. Many places allow you to sample different juices for free. Try as many as you want and find the ones you like.

Welcome to VU. Would order 2 tanks and one mod. Wait for second mod until you have used the first for a week or two. You may not like it. If you like tobacco flavor might want to look at Halo tribeca, Charlie Noble ry4 pistachio and tripoli are all 3 delicious.

For juice TMaxx might be a good starting point Tmaxx's No Frills Ml's - be sure to order the dropper separately with this company, as they cut costs on packaging, not the ingredients

The reason being that they are inexpensive and have a wonderful reputation for budget juice - that way, you can experiment trying to find what juice works for you without breaking the bank - newbies often find themselves out a lot of cash with juice they don't like because taste is so subjective

Also, remember that the Digiflavor is very new and unproven at this point -

Also, RTAs as opposed to tanks, come with a steeper learning curve and will require investing in additional supplies, mainly wick and wire, coil gauge,

I get it. I am just trying to avoid known bad juice.

Thanks for the advice!

Good advice. I'll look into TMaxx as well.

Welcome @Zaedon and congratulations on making the decision! The only way I was able to quit after almost 40 years was to go Cold Turkey and I used the Cig-A-Likes to get me passed the withdrawals. Once I was over the cravings I then bought myself an iStick TC40W and a Nautilus Mini tank because refilling the carts was becoming too much trouble. 3 years since I said today is the day I never buy a pack of Marlboro ever again. If I could do it I think anyone can~! Good Luck and keep fighting the urge.

Some advice I received at a local vape shop as I was trying to quit was to find juice that you think you will like and don't try to replace cigarettes with a tobacco vape. If you like blueberry go with that for example or peach etc. As others stated always have a back up (its real easy to pick up a pack) good luck!

A minor bit of opinion/suggestions for wicking material here. You might consider either Muji organic cotton or Ready X wick. Each has its own pros and cons. The cotton you can swap out and pitch when you change juice flavors. It is inexpensive and doesn't hinder flavor unless you get a dry hit and then you'll know it. :blech:

The Ready X is a ceramically coated wick that has been kiln fired making it resistant to extreme temperatures. The pro with this is you can simply dry fire it between changing up flavors without any concern the wick will burn, in fact, if you get it white hot it'll go back to being a white colored wick.

I'm currently stuck using the cotton, enjoying it well enough. I had used rayon/cellucotton for a while and liked it well too. Thought better of its use when someone explained a minor health risk possibility using it might have. So, I buy the cotton at 5 10piece packs for about $3-4 and use it. So far no dry hits on it and as I said there's no flavor degradation. :)

I am still looking at various rebuildable tanks. I haven't seen one that has completely sold me yet. I would like to purchase one so I have atleast two tanks. Per another posters advice I am going to wait on a second cuboid mod until I am sure I like it.

There are so many different wicks and coil materials it is kind of mind boggling.

It seems as though cotton is the preferred wick material choice for most vaping enthusiasts.

Thanks for the tips!

I looked at this one. It seems like it could be a good unit. There just isn't a lot of feedback on it yet. I weight personal experience with a given product higher than reviews and marketing data. I would prefer something with a proven track record.

That is wise indeed :)

Not sure I can offer much in regards to a tank suggestion beyond maybe a Griffin. Had a friend that seemed to enjoy using one of those. It has a 24 mm Velocity style build deck. The Velocity V2 RDA clones I have are nice to build on, would imagine the Griffin would be nice as well.

Yes there's lots of options with vaping. :) Some of us enjoy having a variety of options. For whatever odd reason, this last time I did a small vaping shopping spree, I bought Nichrome 80 A coil wire. I had been using Kanthal A wire. So far the Nichrome seems to work maybe a little better for me. Don't be afraid of trying something new. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Yeah, liking cotton myself for wick. :)

In my experience, if you're looking to quit smoking and want a mouth to lung tank that will closely mimic a cigarette, the kayfun 3.1 is as close as it will get. 28g kanthal micro coil with organic cotton wicking and you're golden.
The kayfun prime is it's newest rendition, which comes highly recommend by users I've spoken to. I haven't used on myself yet, so take that for what it's worth.
As for other rebuildables that serve well for mouth to lung and wont cost you fattened calf, the pickings can be slim.
Personally, I've enjoyed the cthulu mtl, kayfun mini v3 and taifun gt as my favorite mouth to lung tanks.
However, the kayfun 3.1 and Nautilus mini were the two tanks that got me off of cigarettes.

I looked the 24mm digiflavor siren 2 a bit closer. I watched some reviews, read some post on forums for the 22mm version. It appears that most people (limited sample) see this as the best mtl rta on the market. At about $40 shipped it seemed a bit steep for what it is. I don't mind spending money to try things, but $40 is a bit high

I searched and found a site (sourcemore.com) selling it for $23 shipped. For $23 bucks I'm okay being a guinea pig. I ordered it. I'll let you know when it arrives and how it works, Polargirl.

To have the best, you need to be on the cutting edge which sometimes means taking chances on unproven technology rather than listen to the naysayers in this world who say "settle for less because it is safer". Someone with your background in technology can be more confident than most taking that chance and deal with problems if they do somehow happen.

I had only one other person on this forum give personal experience feedback with a Siren 2 that they won before it was even released for sale. I am most certainly looking forward to your feedback since I to am a smoker looking to quit hence doesn't know how to rebuild my own coils yet.

I failed to quit analog 4 yrs ago when aspire nautilus was stil $200 here in Indonesia. Not until last year when I was so pissed treated as a third grade citizen due to smoking analog in public. That was the turn around when I decided to do a thorough r&d on the latest vaping device. I gave a sub ohm a try and been clean eversince. The atomizer type really didnt work for me but the dual coil sub ohm RTA does give the joy. The throat hit is there and the nic is delivered to the system smoothly. So far I’m enjoying every part of it including rebuilding the coil and wick, its more like a lil experiment everytime. On the juice, i tot I wud like the tobacco flavor with high nic. Turned out the 3mg creamy cake flavor is the one. Fruity flavor is ok too just not my top of the list. Afterall, switching is easy if ur willing to r&d. Good luck

Something that would have helped me save money in the long run would have been getting both an MTL and a DL set up. I started out with MTL and it helped me cut down on smoking, but it didn't really get me to where I wanted to be. I chased after what I thought should be my perfect set up for years before breaking down and getting a DL set up that I had previously made fun of people for using. Turns out, it was exactly what I needed and I quit smoking cold turkey after 25yrs of attempted suicide by tobacco. I have never looked back. I don't know your preferences and you might not yet, either. My currents set up is a very moderately priced one. I have the Smoant Charon, best mod I have bought to date, & the SMOK Cloud Beast (I like having the rebuildable deck with the option to use a regular coil if I don't have time to rewick and this gives me that option). There are better tanks and mods out there, I am sure, but this one serves me quite well and the whole set up cost me about $70. Good luck and keep posting. Everyone here is really great and will help you any way we can.

Let me posit another option here. These got me started out on a journey to where I am now. The Smok ARO tank. They are quite affordable, durable and easy to get up to speed on.

You might need a 510 to Ego style adapter to use these on a box mod. This isn't any huge problem either. The smaller end screws into the mod's 510 connector/s, leaving the bigger end exposed to let you put Ego style tanks on.

The coil head assemblies for this are dirt cheap too. You can usually find vendors selling them in a 5 pack for $5-7 at most. Yes, these can be rebuilt. I wouldn't suggest rebuilding them though as it can be an unworthy PITA, especially with new ones so affordable.

I steep 4-6 weeks. Do you have a local shop you can get a bottle from to tide you over? When ordering juice check to see if it's made to order.

And lastly AZ Swagg Sauce has probably the best Cinnamon Toast Crunch flavored e-liquid I've ever tasted (Sinner's Crunch).Unfortunately it is only available when you buy 1 of their bundles. So I'm going to toss the link for their least expensive bundle your way...Cheers!

Making my own juice sounds interesting. My sister-in-law makes her own juice. I just found out after my wife told her I was getting off smokes and started vaping. Sounds pretty fun.
I'm enjoying it. There are great people here willing to help you get started. Cruise the diy forums, that's what I did for awhile before jumping in. Not nearly as intimidating as it seems.

I'm checking out your short list. Pretty interesting. I'm going to have to try some of the juices.

Here is a list if what I got so far.

Mod - cubis 150w
Tank - Aspire Nautilus 5ml
Spare Coils - 5X Aspire 1.8 BVC
Batteries - 4X LG 18650 HE2
Battery charger - Nitecore i4 intellicharger
Juice - Tmaxx's Blueberry cake and chocolate hazelnut brownie.
Digiflavor Siren 2 (has not arrived yet)

I'm currently vaping the bb cake. It has good taste. Gives me a bit of a headache though. It's only 12mg nico. The choco brownie is 18mg nico and gives ni headache. Probably just need to adjust to it.

@Zaedon --seems like you've gotten good advice already, and I don't really have anything to add to it; just hello  and welcome to VU and a whole new way of life. It does take a while to find just the *right* vape for your own needs and tastes, but it's so worth it!

Just vape on! :) :cloud:

I'm just trying different juices until I find some special special flavors.
People here have beens friendly and helpful. I'm so grateful for everyones help.

I am on my second day of vaping with no smokes. I am still craving cancer sticks but I'm sure it will pass.

Yep, it does, but if it gets to the point where you feel you really really need a smoke, don't be so hard on yourself that you end up resenting the vaping -- we all go at our own pace, and heading in the right direction -- keeping on vaping! -- is more important that stressing yourself out about it -- stress just makes you wanna smoke more! :D

Just vape yourself silly, and that should take care of most of the "cravings" -- at least the "random thought" variety. If you just vape everytime you think of smoking, the brain finally gets the picture. :D

Looks like a decent start the only thing you might want to check out is Aspire Clapton Coils as they are a bit better for both flavor & clouds...In my opinion.

If you're getting headaches when you vape you might want to ease down your nicotine level a bit. Also make sure to drink lots of water when you vape.Vaping can & will dehydrate you so stay hydrated.

That Blueberry Cake from Tmaxx reminds me quite a bit of (Papa Smurf) which sadly is no longer made.
