The majority of them are Agaves (century plants) and there are a few Aloes also as well as prickly pears, echinopsis, trichocereus, barrels and other varieties mixed in. When I moved here 3 years ago there was not one plant in the yard! Each and every one of these are my kids that I planted and tend to all year round.:inlove: Some I bought and some I brought with me from my former home when I moved. A few have grown from cuttings or pups (babies) that other people have given me.

I'm not the best at posting pics on this site  but I'll try again later when husband gets home so he can help me and see if I can post better and larger pictures so you can see them in more detail. Is there a specific one plant you are curious about or want to know the name of?

Oh....love the fact you collect books. It is awesome to see there are still people who read! I have two book cases in my 'office' at home and still like to buy books on occasion but nothing like the collection you have. Your collection is quite impressive and I'm envious (in a good way). Do you have a favorite genre or author or just read everything of interest?

Hmm... I have favorite genres, but I also love "serendipity" when it comes to reading, because one the BEST books I've ever read, I only picked up because I had nothing to read that day: The Hotel New Hampshire, by John Irving -- it made me laugh, cry, laugh some more, and then some more, and decide that Irving is absolutely one of my favorite authors -- A Prayer for Owen Meany is the same. I read the Harry Potter series for the same reason, nothing else to read right then, and my son convinved me to give it a try -- one of the best decisions I've ever made. :D Other than those... I love most stuff by Stephen King and Dean Koontz, Kim Harrison, Laurell K. Hamilton, and Preston&Child; I looooooooove "urban fantasy," which seems to be what they're calling books about vampires, were-creatures, magic, and the Fae these days; I also love most types of mysteries, whether they're cozies, thrillers, police-procedurals, or whatever else might fall into that category. I also enjoy a good bit of non-fiction: biographies/autobiographies, if the people interest me; psychology, anthropology, history of ALL types including natural... and a whole lot of other stuff. :D The only stuff i won't read is: anything by Tolkien -- I read War & Peace but I have only so much patience -- and I've gotten away from gritty stuff like Tom Clancy, Clive Cussler, etc... and I refuse to ever pick up another James Patterson since he started phoning it in and letting others write the books he puts his name on, and also NO Mary Higgins Clark because books should not be written to a template.

I could probably write my own book on this subject, but I think this suffices... ;)

That's an excellent list of choices. I'm kind of the same way. I'll read about anything if the topic interests me or the title grabs my attention or somebody recommends it. I'm a fan of Margaret Atwood , Douglas Coupland, James Clavell and I loved Poe and Shakespeare in high school and nobody had to force me to read it. I still do and have the complete works of both. I like the short stories of Anton Chekov (Of Russia not Star Trek :teehee: ) like, "The Bet" and "The Cherry Tree" but have no patience with Dostoyevsky. I read a lot of historical stuff both non fiction and biographies as well as historical fiction like Victoria Holt and Norah Lofts. Love anything that has to do with ancient cultures and social anthropology. Like things about nature and animals. Will read a lot on politics. Appreciate more and more a good comedy or drama. I don't mind reading some stuff on medicine but not into the uber heavy, dry Science medical stuff and not at all into Sci-Fi or Urban Fantasy.

If something interest me and I think it would be useful to know or a really 'cool' talent to have, I'll get a book on it. I make it a point to always be learning something. So I have a ton of "How To/Teach Yourself" books. Will say I've learned how to do a lot of cool things if my yard is any indication and my kitchen is just as crazy. Keeps me busy and out of trouble and off the streets. :p And of course not above reading a novel for pure entertainment value or just flipping through a magazine for fun.

My personal belief is that one of the secrets of getting old without losing your marbles is to keep learning new things, keep creating new synapses and pathways of thought and association. One of the most infuriating things to me are these people who assume that just because they're now 20/30/40/50/60, they have nothing further to learn -- talk about know-it-alls! They close their minds completely to anything new that might happen along... and after a decade or two of doing that, one finds that one is hopelessly outdated... in pretty much every aspect. Which is actually one of the reasons I finally got a mobile phone last year -- I've been a PC geek since 1989, but I could see that tech has moved more and more over to mobile technology, so I thought it behooved me to come into the 21st century. :D

Mobile phones provide excellent examples -- like so many "older" people, I've been very resistant to this new "txt-speak"... I think it's bastardizing the language and encouraging low literacy levels. But within 6 wks of getting a mobile phone and being able to send txt msgs, I found myself txting crap like "b4" and "2u". :giggle: Would I type shit like that in the forum? No, because I use a PC with a keyboard... but if I was visiting the forum from a mobile phone? Well, I might. :D

Since we're on the topic of books, here's one for you. I picked it up in 2011 and got a lot of use from it. It is called, "Is This Thing On? " A Friendly Guide To Everything Digital for Newbies, Technophobes, and the Kicking & Screaming by Abby Stokes.
It even comes with pictures. :hearts: Maybe they'll come out with a 4th edition (the 3rd was in 2015) and I'll buy it along with a new cell phone because then I'll know how to work it. I won't buy a more sophisticated phone yet because it seems they keep updating them every other minute. I figured I'd wait for awhile until that slows down or stops. I hate wasting money for paperweights. So my phone is antiquated but it is a phone and works just fine to talk on. YEP, saying it loud and proud.....I 'talk' on my telephone and 'type' on my computer.

I don't mind texting but I just don't 'get it'. My old person (49) logic kind of goes: If nobody is supposed to hear my conversation and I have to 'type' on my phone to keep it private, then I am obviously someplace I ought not to be using my phone in the first place. Also why would I want to have private type/text conversations in a room full of people?o_O I mean if I want privacy I should not be having a conversation or using my phone around others prying eyes and ears in the first place. I ought to wait until I am alone----in private. If that's the case then I can talk freely because I'm in private. I don't need to text/type. Right? I dunno. Just my thinking.

The thing that cracks me up now days, and I have to admit disturbs me a bit, is seeing a whole group of people sitting face to face at a table or a couple walking side by side and NOBODY is talking or looking at each other. They're all texting each other! Wow! Does nobody 'talk' anymore or am I just that old and out of it?

Yeah, I put the smackdown on my son for bringing the phone to the dinner table, and it wasn't even a texting thing, but him trying to watch a TV show that no one else at the table was interested in. I grabbed it and said "AFTER dinner!" :giggle:

But texting does have some good uses -- used to, if I wanted to tell my husband something, I'd have to call him at work, and invariably get a loud earfull of I'M BUSY!! Now, I can just text him. If it's really important, I might still call, but for something not critically earth-shattering... texting saves a lot of screaming and yelling. :D

I guess there's some perks to my and my husband's jobs. Neither allow us to bring a cell phone into the building. :) We're both 'trained' to check voice mail the moment we get in our cars.

We're also like you when it comes to the dinner table. We don't have kids but it is amazing how many of our adult friends we have invited over and had to politely 'explain' we don't do the phone or t.v. while at the dinner table. We 'talk', and laugh and joke and 'catch up' on things.

Speaking of which........getting time for me to dash. Gotta catch up on one or two things here.
Have a great night.

My working career has been techie stuff often on the bleeding edge. Unix admin, programmer, Telecom Technician, etc.

However even though I like tech and program and build things with electronics, etc.

I am NOT a Telephone junkie nor a techno socialite on the social pages.
This is about as social media as I get.

I still use a flip phone with no net access.
Wife has a 'smart' phone though....

Well, we do often watch TV at dinner, if something comes on at 8 that we all enjoy -- I've always had a hard time getting dinner ready early enough to be done with it before prime time. But still, that's a family entertainment, not just one person being rude to the others at the table. My son is 29, a long way from a kid, but sometimes apparently still needs the Mommy hammer to smack him down. :giggle:

Same here, I got my 1st PC in 1989 as well. I use my PC hardware antiquities for collecting most of the dust particles that I mentioned earlier in the thread... I also have a smartphone, but swiping on the touchscreen is removing the dust so I don't use it that often.

My PC is most of my entertainment, and ALL of my "social life"... the smartphone, eh, it's handy, but I usually go hours at a stretch without even looking at it -- I mainly got it so I could always have reading material no matter where I go, and not have to lug a book or 6 with me. I was really resistant to the whole idea of ebooks... till I actually tried it out, and immediately felt like "where has this been, all my life!" The ability to change the font, the font size, the lighting/coloring, not need ambient light at all, absolutely a godsend.

But I also like the smartphone because it has much better "goon repellant" than a regular home phone does -- if I don't recognize the number, on either, I don't answer it, but the smartphone has the ability to block all incoming solicitors and bill collectors -- priceless! And the immediate ability to reverse-lookup numbers, also priceless.

A fellow caci collector :vino:
Don’t have many pics, and wouldn’t post pics of some of my cacti lol. Mostly grow Trichocereus, some named clones but most seed grown (teaches me patience) I have some seed grown plants of another genus that are 5 years old and only a little better than an inch round.
A couple pics:

Yippee! Another cactus head!
That's an awesome collection considering you grew them from seed. Very impressive work on your part considering the germination time and the fact that cacti in general aren't speedy growers. Trichocereus though, aren't too painfully slow and the blooms more then make up for the wait. Gorgeous blooms on yours! Adore the color. <3

Here's a sampling of some of mine from last winter/very early spring.
#1. Trichocereus Grandiflorus
#2. Chamaelobivia v. 'Rose Quartz'
#3. Echinopsis Subulata v. 'Dominoes'

I got sorta geekily into it when I first got my current ZTE phablet; I wanted to learn everything I could about it, so I hung around the ZTE forum, and another site called AndroidPit... but it wore off after about 6 months. Hanging at those sites was going to guarantee a raging case of phone shinyitis that would put vaping shinyitis TO SHAME... and I just can't afford that; my phone works just fine, does everythng I need it to do, so there's no need for me to think of "upgrading" unless it either breaks, or it just gets seriously out of date... which is sadly all too common with all gadgets.

But I'm totally with ya, about gadgets. :D I just fucking love technology! :giggle:

And BTW, I'm jealous of all those lervely cacti. I have a MONSTER of an aloe, actually it's 10-15 aloes that all started as babies when I cut down the main stalk of my huge monster aloe 2 yrs ago -- and every late winter/early spring, sitting in the garage where I always drag it to over-winter, it always puts up one bud... but it never blooms; my husband will drag it outside, thinking it needs more sun... but that bud always dies before ever blooming. Should we just leave it in the garage until it blooms? Any other tips for coaxing it to bloom?

Andria,
Can you post me a pic so I can get a good look at it and perhaps try to give you an I.D. on it? If you have one of the parent plant that would be helpful.

That would be the only way for me to be able to tell you for sure what type of care it needs. Not sure where you live but a lot of Aloes bloom in the winter. NOT SNOW but they need mild, warm long sunny days with cool, crisp evenings to stimulate their 'bloom' signal. My Aloe vera are just now sending up their stalks and will be blooming next month through April. The hummingbirds will be visiting them. So awesome to see them. :inlove:They are at rest in the summer. Also most aloes and agaves won't bloom if they're pot bound. They need to be planted in the ground.

If you don't want to take up the forum's space/time with plant chatter you can send me a message with it. Although who doesn't want to hear all about plants!

And yes, technology is cool as shit just confusing as shit too at times! I envy those that catch onto it fast with little or no instruction. My husband is one of those. Unfortunately I'm not and still plodding along in the dark ages. Well, let's say dim ages now. I appreciate it and marvel at all the things it can do and have a healthy respect for it but at times just wish it would slow down a bit. I'm dizzy!

I will say while I do appreciate the modern conveniences when it comes to home, medicine and communications, I miss dealing with people. It scares me at times how easily replicable humans have become. Human interaction on a daily level is becoming more unnecessary; it seems we need to do less and less for ourselves; and we are rapidly rendering ourselves obsolete when it comes to work. Driverless cars, robo-calls, ATM machines, and now punching in your own food order at a kiosk in a fast food restaurant are just a few examples off the top of my head.

This is the monster -- though it's actually quite a few monsters all in the same pot:

monsteraloe.jpg

It always lives in the pot, because the winter is too cold here, to stay outside and not be killed, so we drag it into the garage in the winter, once we start having 35 or lower nights; it stays in the garage, getting very sparingly watered maybe 2-3 times during that phase, and once the nights are consistently getting to at least 45 degrees, we take it back outside and water it very thoroughly; it'll look a bit gray for a while, but then start greening up again. The bud always forms in late winter, while it's still a bit too chilly for it outdoors -- since our cat likes the garage, we keep a small heater out there, though it only runs in the daytime; at night we turn it off for safety. Still, it probably doesn't get below 40-ish out there.

Here's my other current pot-baby, Rosemary -- I keep it in the pot since it wants very poor, dry soil, and zero fertilizer. It doesn't look like much because I cut a bunch of it a couple months ago, for cooking, but I'm just thrilled it's still thriving; I've killed more rosemarys than I've successfully nurtured. :D

Hi Andrea.
Got just a moment before I have to run. As for the Aloe. It is inside in a cold garage (despite heater) during peak flowering time. It needs, if possible, to be taken indoors where it is warm and put in the full sun. It won't turn that white color on you (It's way of saying 'I'm cold.') and it will surely wake up and bloom for you. <3 Is there anyway you can make that an indoor house plant this time of year? They work beautifully indoors as house plants. You can still put it outside in the spring/summer if you so desire.

Also a bit cramped in that pot. Needs a bigger pot. The roots could be getting wrapped around and damaged. If you don't want to repot it , you can leave the main plant in the pot and pull out and separate the other plant and off shoots (pups) without any harm to mom what so ever and start them in pots of their own. If you plant them/pot them close by each other, they will eventually cross pollinate and create more blooms.

As for the Rosemary, same thing. That takes super bright light and lots and lots of heat. We grow that outdoors here in our yards as a shrub. It thrives in our summer heat of 118+ ! It is probably freezing its little plant ass off in the garage. Nice sunny kitchen counter or window sill would be a great spot.

Gotta go.
Have a great day.

The aloe can't come in, no; it's much too heavy to lift, is why it's on that rolling caster thing -- that's a clay pot that weighs probably 20 lbs all by itself, add the rocks in the bottom, the dirt, and then the vast plant(s).... probably over 100lbs. I know it's overcrowded; I'm thinking of cutting them ALL down and then when the new babies sprout, transplanting those to separate pots; much too diffficult right now, with the size that they are, and the roots are completely tangled together. It's not really meant as a "pretty" plant -- it's my way of dealing with the regular burns of cooking, and I'm giving some thought to trying it out on my eczema..... There are all these products that contain aloe, yet aloe loses 100% of its efficacy for the skin once it's out of the plant for more than an hour or two.

I keep them both in the garage to allow them to go dormant, hence the very sparse watering; if they came in the house, they would surely die, because I somehow manage to kill every houseplant I've ever attempted. I think the drying effect of the furnace is the biggest reason -- I'm just not a house-plant person at all. The aloe can't be kept in bright sun at all, or it loses its spots -- an aloe's way of saying "I'm an oasis plant, put me in the shade!" I also don't want to deal with the mess, water, falling dead foliage, etc. So garage-dormancy is how I let them deal with the winter -- outdoors, they would both die, just as soon as the temps hit less than 32 (for the aloe) or less than 25 (for the rosemary), or upon receiving any frozen precip.

Hmm....o.k. Well, I get you on house plants and can see your dilemma there. I don't do house plants either. I have a dog that treats them like her own personal salad bar  I can leave food on the table, meat defrosting on the counter, my good heels and expensive hand bag lying on the floor and the dog ignores it all. Put a houseplant on a table and she goes ape shit! I swear she's jealous of the attention I give them. So I only have one house plant (she can't reach.) and my cacti outside! she learned her lesson real quick when she tried nibbling those. :teehee:

Here's what I can offer in terms of honest gardening advice for what it is worth.

The only other place I can think of that might work for your plant condition wise would be an enclosed patio/sun room or entryway/vestibule/mudroom if your house has one. Still out of the way and separate from the house but 'inside' so to speak. (Your Rosemary would work here in these spots as well.)

I can say in regards to Aloes, they are natives of Arabia and need specific conditions. If you are unable to provide the all day warmth and light (filtered sun is fine) required to induce flowering then the plant will never flower. The plant will grow and produce plenty of pups but no flowers. That will be the trade off for the less then ideal growing conditions.

As for cutting back the plant, you can but that still won't eliminate the massive root ball you got going on inside the pot. As it is presently, the plant can only be sustained for so long in such a small and cramped space before it starts showing the effects of its confinement and eventually dies. Nice thing about Aloe vera though is with all those pups (babies) you have tons of replacement plants handy and it is a super fast grower. Pot a few up now and watch them take off like a rocket in the spring should you decide to just replace mom completely. That might be a better way to go. Keep several small plants instead of one big giant monster one especially if you are going to be using it regularly for skin treatments.

Hope some of this was helpful.

Grey hairs.

I know what I look like. I got up this morning and went to the mirror and went, "Whoa! HOLY SHIT! Like, whose grey hair is that??? My hair wasn't that grey before---- was it?"

It seemed like I just did my hair not too long ago and now the greys are back with a vengeance and they were kind enough to bring a whole bunch of new ones with them. Fuck middle age and this menopause thing :finger:.
Wasted a perfectly beautiful afternoon sitting inside because I had to color my hair sooner then expected. Oh well, at least on the bright side I still weigh the same and wear the same size I have for the last 9 years.

Best cure for hot flashes: cool down your ears -- just like in the winter, if your ears are cold, you'll feel much colder; if they're warm, you'll feel warmer; it works in reverse too, since the ears are an important part of the brain's cooling system -- and the hypothalamus, which controls body temp, is very dependent on estrogen, and the warm/cool sensors of the ears are connected directly to the hypothalamus. I'm almost got mine convinced that THERE AIN'T GONNA BE NO MO ESTROGEN DAMMIT! :giggle:

I swear, sometimes it feels like my ears are GLOWING... melting!

Oh we got that hormone thing all figured out!:bliss:

It only took me having a few major hot flashes and some night sweats before I said, "Screw this!" and ran screaming for some Bioidentical HRT ( that's hormone replacement therapy----for the gentlemen who may not have known that.)
Now I'm cool, dry, and comfortable. I'm also no longer a moody, crying, raving lunachick. (Just a regular one ).
Did lots and lots and lots of research on them. Glad I started them. I'm not proud. Why suffer when there was no need to?

Even husband said the HRT has made a 180 degree difference in me in regards to energy, mood, stopped all unpleasant physical symptoms, etc. I was a good candidate health wise for the treatment so I pursued it. Glad I did because it has turned out to be the best money and time I ever invested in myself. <3

My mom did HRT for a while, and it helped her a lot. For myself, my peri-menopause was so long and involved and painful, when actual menopause arrived I decided I was well shed of estrogen, and my various parts would just have to learn to do without it. Now that I've managed to quit smoking, I figure, I've removed one serious risk of cancer (at least, not making the risk any worse than 39 yrs of smoking could do), I just don't wanna start a whole new cancer risk. So, now I guess I just collect wrinkles. :giggle:

Heading to the Big Island
I'm originally from Hilo, HI. Big island is one of the nicer islands. I collect pogs as well as random knick knacks. Since I work as an automobile dismantler for a large recycling company I come across lots of things in cars that the previous owners left behind.

I've seem to have collected nothing but germs this last week.
Been sick and miserable with a wonky stomach and a nose that runs like a fire hose. I'll spare you the other details as they're not pretty. Living off of tea, water, and soup and toast.
And you think I'd lose a pound...........nope.

Would those with children do me and others a favor? Don't take it personally but PLEASE do not bring your children around us or into our homes when they are sick.

My neighbor came to visit me. Normally I don't mind, but she IS a bored housewife (I won't call her a 'home maker' as I've seen the inside of her house o_O) Despite the fact I was busy, I didn't want to be rude. She also had her little boy (18 months) with her and I didn't know if they needed something or if it was important. Nope. She just stopped by to bullshit. In the meantime the kid is running around touching everything in the house and I'm running around trying to catch him. I finally grabbed him and picked him up. That's when the heifer goes, "Oh...You may not want to do that. He's running a low grade fever. He's feeling better today but still his temp is 99."
Like WTF dude! :gaah: That means he is contagious.

Would I be an asshole for sending her my doctor's bill and asking her to reimburse me?

Work does not take kindly to unexcused absences. If you are sick enough to call off work then you go to the doctor if you miss work and get a doctor's excuse stating you are sick! Not only did I have to go to the doctor because I'm sick I've used up 3 of my sick days and am now heading into using some of my vacation time because of the gastro-intestinal illness I've caught. :gaah::cuss2::tantrum: Grrrrrrrrr!

I'd definitely send that heifer my doctor bill. Just another reason I'm glad my son is grown! Kids are freaking biohazards!

I'm glad my daughter is just 3, I can still pick her up and haul her away if all else fails :D

As for disease, technically they can get sick from germs Adults carry, but are immune to, so one could call adults disease carriers, also
