So start at the recommended wattage and work my way up. Makes sense. I willl try that. Thank you.

No because smok tends to go overboard with their recommendation range, since they want you to buy those damn coils lol. Here's my experience and how I made them work as I started vaping, and got sold smok mod and tanks as starter setup. By now I moved on to building myself and you will see in a second why I made the change. Smok coils are that high maintenance GF/BF nobody wants, or that child that cries every 3 second for attention purposes only lol.
Let's start here:
Grab the pack of your coils and unpack
Find a very thin needle or safety pin, now on the outside of that metal sleeve, you'll see pockets. Poke 2-4 holes into each pocket, beneath or above the wire. Do not fully insert the pin/needle you do not want to go fully through. This is only recommended with high VG juices, starting at 70/30 and up. If you vape thinner, let's say 60/40 or 50/50 one hole is enough. If you vape more pg dominant juices than skip that step.
After you're done with that, drop the juice into each outer pocket as well as the inner area. Don't worry if it gets on the wire, rather too much because you can blow that out later, then being sorry and end up with burnt.
Now reassemble your tank and fill it, without pressing the fire button take 4-8 drags.
Let stand at least 15 minutes.
Now start at 30 watt, yes I'm aware nothing comes out of these coils at that range but it helps the break in. Take 2-3 hits, now increase to 35 watts, same thing. Work your way up like that till you like it. Out of experience I caped the x4 @ 43-48 watts and the t6/8 at around 50-58 depending on my mod. Make sure you stay a tad bellow recommendation or right at the recommended starting range, of course only if that's satisfying for you, but don't start at 50 etc lol.
Even with all that, these coils will only last couple of days if heavily used. One more tip, if using high VG juices give that coil time to catch up. Meaning wait a minute or two between pulls, or shorten the length overall. Gl
