with so much new gear hitting the market now it got me wondering if the medium to older stuff can still compete with advances offering the latest and greatest in this or that

Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying last few years have seen some really bloody awesome gear come out and who doesn’t like a little bit of the shiny.

What I’m thinking here though is version advances in product lines etc for instance can the crown 1 still compete and is it perfectly reasonable to go out and get it still compared to the crown 3

I liken this thread to one of the old cars that you sometimes see on the road despite all the other crap made at the same time dying around it, it just refuses to die!
So what products are out there that you can still get for a really good price and have stood the test of time, but can be picked up relatively easily today.

Not looking for any I’m enjoying my rare 300 run items here or check this out but it’s no longer made that’ll be no use to anyone other than you so don’t care about it :)

I got one: The Guardian 1.5 by DovPo.

I bought this rubberized brick of a mod a few years ago while looking for something sturdy and robust to take out with me to get funky in the wilderness with. The price point was fair enough for the time... (oh, guess it's still retailing for around $40-50, huh (nm, google-fu gets it down a twenty spot)) ...I had little actual expectation, but damned if that chunky monkey hasn't stood the test of time. Drops, drops, drops and drops - from an open tailgate acting as a reload station onto gravel and stone, out of pockets onto tree branches, accidental kicks and even the occasional failed catch, it takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'. Battery door never pops open to spit out my cells, chipset is Basic Becky but has never chipped, cracked, fogged up, nothing. Buttons continue to function. It gets rained on, it gets spilled on, it gets knocked around and it's always smiling up at me with this weird DovPo goofy little Welcome grin that it has. "Hey boss! I still work, hy-yuck!" It's my little outdoor buddy. As long as it functions, it will continue to be.

Everything I use on a daily basis is considered "older gear", at least at the rate the market has progressed. Two of my most used mods are the snow wolf mini 75w and the snow wolf 1.5, those mods don't even have SS TC. I also use a VTC mini quite a bit as well.

My daily mods are a VS DNA 200 and 75 lava box as a back up and there is nothing out there I would want to replace them with. Other than aesthetics, nothing coming out really impresses me these days. I do plan eventually getting some kind of DNA squonker but that's more to keep me from killing myself trying to drip and drive.

I still use daily, a STM w RBA on a Kbox Mini 50W. Been using the same rig for over 2 years now.

bought about 10 of the STMs for backup.
Seems like they will last me longer than I have left to live since I am still using the first one :)
Also have 3 extra Kbox Mini's.

In my opinion...yes.

It depends highly on vape style and what you want out of your vape. Juice formula also plays into it as well. I can't use a juice with Anything higher than 70vg. 60 is my preference, so I don't need a huge juice well for viscous liquids.

That said, I still think the original kayfun and taifun are the best mtl attys made. Simple to build and wick, and a fantastic mouth to lung vape. The fact that mine have not needed anything other than new glass but otherwise still perform and look new, speaks volumes, in my opinion.

For stock coils in the mtl market, the Nautilus bvc coils are still being used by noobs, and the Nautilus mini is still my recommended starter tank. Those three items have stood the test of time in my opinion.

While new mtl gear just hitting the market, finally (thank Christmas) the new stuff that I've tried, falls a wee bit short. (Kayfun prime and mini 3 being the only exception).

For dl vape gear, as one that pimarily drips, I see all rdas as no more than slight variations of each other. Side, bottom, top airflow and a place for my mouth hole. ..... There's just not much there that I can say to find no longer relevant. Some of my rdas are still in use after 4-5 years.
I still use on a regular basis: tugboat v2, petri, Narda, aeolus, goon.

Some people may get bored with something; but, that doesn't make it any less 'good' for another.
I used to love the aqua2 but it finally got stale and I sold it someone who found it to be new to them.
They still use it last we spoke.

seriously..."stood the test of time"....it's not a matter of stood the test of time it's a matter of stood the test of chinese criminal stealing their designs and driving them out of bussiness...vaping isn't evolving it is in a stagnation, becuase innovative designers and modders can't make a profit due to intellectual theft...what innovation what progress same old shite sub-ohm tank with fins on the tank that comes in 16 different colors ...yeah big innovation...there are tons of attys that still can kick ass on anything made today..and a good mech in the hands of builder who knows their shit still can't be beat for blowing clouds, as for flavor I haven't seen anything that has improved on a good genisis atomizer....hell most of my interest now is trying to tack down and buy attys that are no longer made.

Awesome start peeps keep em coming ...maybe stood the test of time isn’t the right description pulse not looking for an argument in here over where the markets headed Just feedback over gear you’ve used still available and has been solid performer even now

Crown V1 still up there for me solid tank and still one of my favourite sub ohms ...I know they had janky coils but have only experienced 1 dud myself

Mod wise for the price cant go far wrong with the old coolfires not sure if they are built as well now as they used to be but my wife’s is going strong 2 years in only mod she uses

Original Boreas should get a shout out (or aromamiser)

RDAs bet you still get an exceptional vape of the older ones out there seems to me the improvements are build deck and space I don’t own enough far back to comment on this

RDTAs bombertech Pindad is still very much one of my favourites though not sure if it’s old enough yet :)

Gennys were before my time So can’t comment if they are still about

there has been very little improvemnet ...all that has happened is that we have made it easier for noobs and lazy people to mindlessly throw premade coils into buckets so they can "chuck" HUGE clouds like they see on Youtube...without having to learn anything about building a coil, or battery saftey, for a Walmart price sticker....like everything China makes..quailty don't enter into the equation. There are still some high end modders making great stuff but not too many anymore. In fact the most interesting thing and biggest improvement I've seen in the last couple of years.has nothing to do with gear being made, but is the guys who vape low sub-ohms coming up with more interesting wires and builds...but as I rarely vape more than 30 watts..it really doesn't come into my arena of enjoyment.

raging aside though do you have no gear to recommend that people can access without jumping through hoops?

Doesn’t have to be China made stuff never said that in the opener just items you feel will be a solid choice compared to what’s on offer and has Lasted without needing a large investment

first off sunshine I'm not raging...you'll know when I am...as for jumping through hoops...do you mean something people can buy for the price of a night out at the movies and is shipped in cargo containers...huh..no,..hell even a clone of a great atty in the hands of a decent builder is stellar.the probelm is alot of the great attys aren't even being cloned any longer...because there is no place to plug in the premade coil...and I don't see that as an improvement.

20161107_114542_zpsx8aak40x.jpg~original.jpg I PIF'd my New eCabs that I had stored, My iStick 20's along with the GS Air Tanks and coils, 2 eLeaf Basic kits, and Sigelei Minibook,Sigelei 75w Oni and Kanger Sub Tank!
I still have my Kanger Evod 2 kit and the Innokin VV/VW's and assorted Evod 2 tanks and coils!- I just kept them for nostalgia.
My steady mod for the last year and a half is my trusty Nebox- that thing goes everywhere with me , it looks a little worse for wear, but still vapes great even though forgot I left the poor thing outside in a rain storm, lucky it was vent side down, but still I dried it off, removed the battery and let it sit for a few days- popped the battery in a it still works till this day! I loved the Nebox so much that I bought 2 more for $14.00 each and put away till the day my trusty old faithful Nebox decides to stop working!

In your opinion, what would say was the last really good rebuildable atty put out?
The last one I bought was petri rta. I havent seen much that peaked my interest lately other than maybe the gem2.

That looks really cool!!!
Thank you!!!
Going to have to find some pics of the deck and airflow. This might be my next new piece. The closest thing to new I've seen in a while.

I got mine used...if you are not a genny user the price is too high for a starting genny..if your interested get the clone and see what you think before trying to get a new one or used authentic....the tank is some kind of polycarb, but you can get a glass tank ...it will take the same glass tank as the Nextgen made by the same guys VWM...unlike a traditional genny the wick is in the center of the deck right under the drip tip...and it's squonkable...it has a 10mm reduced chamber for intnese flavor...one of the best gennys ever made in my opinion.

Thanks for the contributions after :)

A lot of the good "old" stuff is just plain hard to find. Most resellers try to keep up with new gear our Chinese friends keep pumping out. I did pick up a 30w Istick and Nautilus Mini for my wife on Ebay. Still a great combo.

There is some innovation, but it is incrementally. I love my new Horizontech Arco 2 tank with the flax coils. Flavor is on par with some of the best RDA's out there. I posted in the RDA section the first look of the "new" NCR Reinforcer rda with a wafer heating element. Looks safer than mesh and no more coil building!! That's a good thing for me.:shades:

Absolutely. I was finally able to afford an authentic Kayfun Lite Plus here from a user who had never used it, still brand new, just old, and most huffer-vapers have no use for that kind of excellent tight draw. Even Tobeco clones of the KFL+ would still be worth buying; they're every bit as good as the authentics, except the authentics have smoother threads.

Original Achilles, whether authentic or clone, would DEFINITELY be worth buying, if anyone was selling them anymore -- if anyone has one but doesn't like the golfball-thru-a-garden-hose type of draw, PLEASE sell it to me! Achilles II are crap, so I'm not at all surprised that no one has bothered to clone them.

it has the airest draw of any genny I've used...I don't like dual wick gennys so I don't include them, but it has the possibility of dual airflows...so while the flavor is very good, it has for a genny can be cranked up to a much airier draw and still retain the flavor very well.in this it is quite unique.

if you give a shit less about TC or only use nickel tc, the ipv 3li is the longest lasting best built mod I know of to exist
kanger subtanks are always a good thing
griffin 22s if they aint got a loose jfc
hexohm 2.1
crown v1 if you can get good coils for it
vapeston maganus - if you can find coils for it
if you can deal with the afc the original aromamizer rdta
an ipv d2 once again nickel tc only

Anyone use those Tobeco tanks still how are they?
Funny you should mention that. I was just talking to @Teresa P a couple of weeks ago about the Tobeco Supertank. Threw a build in it just for nostalgia's sake, and it's still a great vape. Here's a pic I just took on the iStick 50W, which is also still going strong.

yes it is difficult,to do it well... almost nobody vapes them anymore and almost everybody who does, learned how to back in the day when the only atomizers with a tank were gennys, and we had no other choices....3 years ago there were tons of tutorials on how to build gennys on youtube, but today there are not very many, alot of them and especially alot of them done by the best builders have been pulled down...it's like learning how to build exotic wire you can watch tutorials but regardless you are gonna have alot of failures before you get good at it. the Nextera is not a genny I would recommend to a newbie who wants to try using ss mesh in a genny......I'd recommend the Nextgen or the IN'AX..

Anyone ever use the El Cabron RDA from compvape ...could have sworn I saw @conanthewarrior say he had it as some point?

Saw it for £29 on a site over here looks pretty decent for an authentic

Was looking at the compvape entire line up a little while ago up the Seminole G24 can see how they’ve tweaked the designs on the decks past the twisted messes phase the lot

Still like the look of the double vision a lot

I wouldn't know I have never put anything other than mesh in it...but if you put cotton in a genny, then childeren will throw garbage at you, chase you and call you rude names...women will refuse to have sex with you..you will be despised by society until you finally end your miserable existence alone and by your own hand....but yeah you can use cotton if that's how you wanna live..........actually if you notice the shape of the wickhole in the deck it is not the usual simple hole...it is a whole with a slot across it so that perverts can push their cotton down into the tank.

I dropped my Nautilus Mini clone a few weeks ago and broke it. I replaced it with a nautius mini clone.

Been using the popular at the time MVP - Nautilus combo since I became a vaper as my go to vape. I don't chase fads, shiny objects, the latest crap.

Nautilus coils are cheap and abundant. I don't know about the MVP, mine still work despite two of them being run over by cars/trucks so I have not looked.

Some people may get bored with something; but, that doesn't make it any less 'good' for another.
I'm somewhere in there, other than I don't get bored with vape gear. If I like it, I'll use the hell out of it, usually not replacing for quite a while. I'm still using the first eLeaf Pico I ever got, still have the first VTC Mini I ever got, though it doesn't really like to stay on, sometimes. I love those mods. While I realize they're small beans to a lot of vaper's style around here, I like them just as much as when I got them, so I do still recommend them to new people, or to people with similar vape style.

To work, I carry the Pico, a beaten up OLD Kbox 40w and/or a Kbox Mini-C, I use Ammit tanks, and an Aromamizer on those. I still swear by the UD Goblin Mini v1, though considering all the convenience of top fill tanks, I haven't used it in a bit. I've tried newer tanks that got rave reviews, and I just didn't care for them, such as the Engine Nano that most people go nuts over.

Most of my vape stuff are items I've picked up in the Hardware section, or from awesome deals I've seen here and there. I tried getting bits and pieces, at a time. Was easier when I had a better paying job, LOL.

I don't care about the latest and greatest anything, I don't need a huge wall collection of stuff. With the stuff I like, and how long ago it all came out, I can pretty easily still find those items, which in my opinion, says something about those items, and at a great price.

yeah cable would work..but you put a mesh sleeve on cable..in some ways that is a good idea, one of the common mistakes of people new to building gennys is they wrap the coil to tight and it starves the wick..you can avoid that with cable to a large degree.

A Gal after my own heart!

Got a lot of my vape stuff on clearance and such.
If you keep your eyes open and know what you want you can get some great deals on the older stuff.
Only 2 RBA/RTA's I am keeping are the Subtank Mini and the Serpent RTA.
Piffed all the rest.
Piffing most of the Clone RDA's I tried in my entry into squonkiing as well.
