SMOK TFV8 Baby Coils ... WTH??

I use a Big Baby and full-size on a daily basis, and the baby coils do give me more issues than the full-size. My rules of thumb are:

- Check the bottom of the coil to make sure the seal is good (bend in wires that prevent sealing)
- Poke little holes in the cotton with tweezers (all the way around)
- Run 70/30 liquid that doesn't run too sweet (3rd Rock Organic or Naked Menthol)
- Never let the liquid level get below the cotton openings
- Never go higher than the lowest best wattage recommendation
- I only use the X4/Q2 coils. I save the T6/T8 for my full-size

Yes, it's a little absurd to go through all this just to vape. However I really love this tank and the coils. Plus the price is good. My TFV8's are my daily carry. I use an RTA at home.

I agree with the steps that MrMeeseeks pointed out. I was burning through coils like crazy at first. But now I have two Baby Beast that I use on a daily basis on an Alien 220w and I do spend time to prep them before I use the coil. I dont see it as time wasted but rather doing what I have too in order to get my moneys worth out of the coil.
The only thing I might disagree with is I run them in the 35 to 40w range this might be under kill for those coils but at the same time they are lasting me at least a week and im getting pretty good clouds and flavor off them.

Okay, its been almost two weeks and I'm still using my Q2 stock coil, I'm in love with it!! A few time I've vaped the juice dry in the tank but the coils stay so saturated that I've not gotten a dry hit!! I do check the tank fairly often and I'll go damn time fer another refill. I did get an almost dry hit, and was like 'wtf - OH SHIT! LOL that was the first time I vaped the tank dry... But damn I love this whole setup! Alien, BB and my coil... I just hope the T8 is at least on par with the Q2.

the TFV8 RBA is actually really good. the TFV4 ones sucked. I don't have a baby beast rba
what about the BIG BABY BEAST RBA's? I have the one that came with the tank, but haven't tried it yet. I have never used an RBA, but it seems to be very small.

I HAVE FOUND THE ONLY SOLUTION I COULD COME UP WITH... even after all the previous comments (THANKS EVERYONE FOR TRYING TO HELP), this is the only way I have got them to work... :

On the V8 BABY Coils you MUST rough up the visible cotton through the slits around the outside of the coil. I even ripped and pulled some of the cotton out of the slits. Now there is proper juice flow and no more, what appear to be, dry hits!!

PROBLEM SOLVED..!!!

Strange a few of you have had issues with the coils/ reccommended wattage. Ive got the .4 ohm q2 in at 62.5 watts. Tend to last about 6-8 days vaping 10ml a day. Just got to keep the juice level topped off.

"I got no problems with the coils ether. I have an X4 going on 6 weeks and a Q2 going on 5 weeks. Still get good flavor and clouds.
I run 40 - 50 watts. I DIY and use the coil gunking stuff with an RDA though. 75 - 82% VG in all my mixes and no dry hits.

HEY GUYS GOT YOU A FIX FOR Q2 OR M2 COILS FOR DRY HITS OR OVER HEATED RIPS. Just make it a habit to wash your new coil off under the tap BEFORE PRIMING ( I suggest filtered water )(let it dry of course) Or when your old coil is giving dry hits (take it out and wash it off) Dont forget to let it dry (was hard to vape the mix of water and juice... after 10 mins tho it was fine. Just did this yesterday on a old M2 .15 coil HITS LIKE NEW.

ALSO Never fill and just cap (wait 10 sec before you close the fill hole).. It creates a vacuum that doesnt allow the cotton to absorb as fast as it should

I categorically ignore whatever wattage is recommended and/or stamped on the coil. I just prime it like a boss, start at 15w and work my way up to the sweet spot.

That may or may not fall in the recommended range.

For the first time I decided to try something new.
I have been vaping my Vaporesso Target with ceramic cCell coils for many months. No problems with anything except the occasional bad coil right out of the box. I decided to try out something different, something that would give me bigger clouds without sacrificing juice flavor. So I decided to get a TFV8 Big Baby, or 'Big Baby Beast' by Smok. It seemed to be working great. I was getting huge vapor production compared to the Vaporesso cCells, and also great flavor. But after the first tank full everything got crappy. No matter what coils I used (X4 or T8), no matter what juice or vg/pg ratio, no matter what wattage, I am ALWAYS getting DRY HITS after the first tank refill with brand new coils.
I must be doing something wrong, but I have no idea what it could be.
Someone please help me figure this out....

Vaporesso Target Pro 75W
Smok Big Baby Beast Tank
Smok Coils:
V8 BABY-X4: @ 45-55W (coils rated 30-70W)
V8 BABY-T8: @ 55-65W (coils rated 50-110W)

Why would the X4 and T8 coils work great for the first 5ml of juice,
but then all of a sudden start dry hitting like crazy during the second tank full?
I am completely confused by this and haven't got a clue what to do about it.
Please help me if you can. Thanks in advance..
Mine does exactly the same thing. Pisses me off. I replace the coil, it is perfect until I do my first refill. The coil gets strong burnt taste. SAo I replace the damned coil again and it tastes perfect until I do my first refill...FUCK FUCK too much money

I love my RTA's. Goblins, Serpents, a Battlestar, two Moonshots and RBA's for two Baby Beasts and three Kanger Sub- or Toptanks.

Having a working sub-ohm tank with a carefree drop-in coil is a must when you're going somewhere or doing something that prevents you from stopping to rewick, tighten connections or replace a dead coil.

In my experience, a Smok coil head is the worst choice for such an application. If it doesn't leak it burns up and if it doesn't burn up, it leaks.

I haven't done too much research on sub ohm tanks but the crown v1 and the tfv4 were my first ones since a pro tank and then going to drippers. I was tired of wasting money on coils that lasted me 3 days if I'm lucky. I then bought the boreas and never looked back. I did try the RBA section for the tfv4 but it wouldn't accept the coils that I was using so back in the box it went. If I could find a half ass decent sub ohm tank that lasted long enough for my liking i would probably buy it other wise I'll stick with my RTA's and buy premade coils from advanced vape supply. It doesn' take me long to rebuild and wick the tanks but that' my situation I understand that you might not have the same timeframe as me.

Sounds like you have multiple tanks so there' a solution for you. Just carry a back up tank. Unless that' what you have been doing and don't like that idea anymore.

The Vaporesso Estoc is the only non-rebuilt atomizer in my rotation. It's not a high wattage cloud monster, but it is a flavor maker just under or about 40 Watts and the Stainless-wired EUC coils are good drop-in temp control units. You have to work hard to make that tank leak and as long as you don't push it past its limit, it doesn't burn. The only way I can tell it's time to swap heads is the flavor getting ugly on me.

Great to know, Mike! I have a thread going on regarding compatibility on SMOK coils.
Welcome to VU! Good to see you're not afraid to jump in the pond. Enjoy! :shades:
