Presentation wise comes in a plastic box with the Cobra and Asvape Emblem, sleeve slides out presenting you with the cobra. There’s a scratch and sniff is on the back of the box. Not much to this one although the casing does provide you with better protection during shipping.

I really like that the spare coil come in a tube even if it does look like a suppository! I hate it when companies dump spare coils in the box as an afterthought exposing the cotton to all the foam.

Looks & Initial Impressions

Styling is very smart, its form reminds me of the top of a Mont Blanc pen. The subtle engraving on the top cap and the Airflow control ring is fantastic. There is nothing in your face about this Atomiser, it manages to be different without being vulgar.

The coils are a work of art in themselves. I would like to have seen a clear and blackened version of the glass section so I can choose whether or not to show it off.

IMG_1447.JPG

The coil wicking is different. I’ve not seen many (if any I can remember) with this style before, smaller holes but they almost encircle the entire coil housing to maximise entry points for the juice to keep that cotton soaked evenly, something a lot of premade coils struggle with (especially the tops of them)

It’s a shame there aren’t a lot of coil options for this tank, “you can chose any coil you like as long as it’s the 0.5 N80 (Nichrome)!” There’s no RBA deck or different coil materials available at the time of this review. So if you don’t mind NI80 read on, otherwise bow out now and thanks for enduring me this far. I happen to like NI80, I use it a lot when I build coils as it produces a great flavour, I know some say this is nonsense but I can definitely tell the different between using SS to NI80. SS has clean taste to my flavour where I’m able to pick out individual flavour notes, NI80 is a warmer more rounded vape where flavours are merged together, If find it works well especially with the bakery flavours.

The Cobra sits flush on my mods. The AFC has a stop so there is no free turning on it. Unfortunately it’s press fit but does offer nice resistance when turning.

At first glance the drip tip looks too small for my liking, but it’s very comfortable. It does take a standard 510 drip tip. I ran both but preferred the stock drip tip on this.

Build Quality

Excellent tolerances on all the parts everything fits together perfectly. The internals are machined just as well as the externals and all parts feel solid and not cheap.

IMG_1474.JPGIMG_1472.JPG IMG_1473.JPG

Threading is top notch, coils are easy to put in and remove

Positive pin sits proud no dodgy resistance reading detected to date, Coils have a +0.1 variance from stated 0.5ohm

Anodised paint on the metal held up to ultrasonic cleaning no problem

I would like to have seen a better Grip around the top cap, however it doesn’t seem to snag or get stuck when undoing it so I’ll give it a pass on this. Just remember not to gorilla grip the top cap on, it really isn’t needed otherwise you’ll find yourself unscrewing the tank from the mod as you try to open for a refill.

I did have a bit of a mishap when putting in the glass section in the ultrasonic cleaner for the first time. In one 3 minute cycle the film started peeling off! Ok the water was pretty hot at the time but dammit! I hadn’t even used it yet and I had already knackered it. So users beware of doing that! Fortunately for me there’s a spare.

IMG_1471.JPG

As it so happens I’m glad it did strip because I think it looks even better with the black film removed, it provides a premium look to it with juice in the chamber and I get to show the coil off!

Features

Tank breaks down into 6 parts for cleaning and maintenance.

For refilling you have to unscrew the top cap. The refill holes could be a bit bigger, I find I have to use my thin nose refill bottles. There is a reservoir to catch overspill when filling but if there is any juice on top of the lip it squeezes out under the top cap when threading it back on which then needs to be wiped away. This is something all threaded top refill Atomisers suffer with.

It doesn’t leak! Not had a drip from this the whole time, sitting on the mod or when in use. I’ve not even seen any condensation collecting in the base, awesome as I hate leaky tanks with a passion.

The 3.8ml Juice capacity is decent for the 0.5 coils in here, it lasts for a good while before a refill. I didn’t find myself getting cheesed of with having to refill it every 5 minutes like other atomisers in my collection.

Coil Report

Tested Conditions
  • Using 75% VG using my normal flavour I always try for new products.
  • Used Sony VTC5a batteries
  • Tested on the Yihi Q mini
  • Warmed coils up before taking notes at each stage

Cobra NI80 Coil 0.50 ohm
Rated 30 W-45W, according to the manufacturer

Tested with my AFC half open as this suits my draw style.
  • 30 – Fairly decent vapour, muted flavour, cool vape
  • 35 – Pretty much same as 30 for me
  • 40 – Flavour coming through better now, warm vape
  • 45 - Flavour really coming through lovely, warm vape, vapour production peeks here
  • 50 - Flavour peaked here, vape warmer than at 45 though, No increase in vapour
  • 55 – Flavour Diminishing, No increase in vapour, warm/hot vape
  • 60 - Shorter vapes, less vapour as a result same flavour as 55w, hot vape
  • 65 - Heading towards a burnt hit here can taste it coming through.
I settled on 46w as it had the best balance of flavour, vape temperature especially with a slightly restricted lung hit. I would say the recommended range is pretty much spot on for this coil. Coil life is good 2 weeks for me.

How's the Vape?

I really like the vape I get from this tank, I found to get the best from it I needed to take longer draws in order to really benefit from its flavour. Waiting for the coil to warm up is essential otherwise it’s fairly tasteless beforehand. It’s a slow burner, not a reach ‘n’ grab you’re away in flavour heaven. I would say it’s one of the best flavour sub ohm tanks I’ve tried for a warm well rounded vape but lacks the clinical clean taste you get from SS coils (the whole SS vs Ni80 argument I mentioned earlier)

On the downside the draw isn’t particularly quiet, it’s pretty loud especially with the AFC open halfway which is a shame. The draw itself is fairly restricted no matter where you leave the AFC which suits me perfectly but won’t be to everyone’s liking.

Vapour production is satisfying without being obnoxious. Vapour doesn’t feel particularly moist on the inhale more towards the medium to dry spectrum in fact, I’m not saying this is a bad thing just an observation.

The top cap gets warm but never uncomfortably hot putting my lips against it when using the short pom drip tip which is really comfortable to vape from.

One thing I should mention it takes at least two tanks for the coil to break in! It’s not that the coil tasted horrible compared with other premade coils I’ve tried, it just didn’t produce any flavour until that point, so give it a chance before you write it off.

Things I Feel Could Be Improved
  1. Coil options are lacking, would like to have seen a SS coil for this.
  2. Maybe an RBA deck of some sort would be good to see.
  3. Perhaps some grip on the top cap although this would remove its simple form styling.
  4. The film on the glass was woeful it shouldn’t come off that easily.
  5. Coils are pretty expensive to replace at the moment (keep an eye for sales).
  6. Draw is a little on the noisy side.
  7. Press fit AFC rings should be abolished.

Things I Feel It Does Well
  1. Great styling.
  2. Decent price for the tank.
  3. Good Coil life.
  4. Tolerances and threading spot on throughout.
  5. Great flavour on longer draws.
  6. Nice restricted draw even when fully open.
  7. No leaking.
  8. Top cap doesn’t get hot.
Final Conclusion

The Cobra isn’t just your average sub ohm tank it’s actually executed really well. I’m harsh when I comes to cons as you can see I nit-pick with the best of them but apart from the glass I can’t really find anything wrong with it, ok the AFC is press fit but it hasn’t actually let by condensation under the base with mine so I can’t even complain about that, it’s actually quite unnerving for me. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed using this and it’s been refreshing to use a tank that doesn’t require a mountain of wattage to get the best from it.

My attempt at rebuilding the coil

I did have a go at dismantling and rebuilding the coil myself just to see if I could use stainless steel in it.

Didn’t go to plan I’m afraid the inner casing is really difficult to remove without damaging it. I gave it a go gently trying to tap it out with a screwdriver and hammer to start with but bits started breaking, so in a hulk out fashion I hit it a lot harder to show it whose boss - got the bastard out after that!

IMG_1550.JPG

It wasn’t entirely wasted I did note a few things which will come in handy for anyone else trying to give this a go:

This was my plan which I never got to fully test I might need to tweak steps 6 & 8 to have a cotton sheet go over the leg being folded down:

  1. Remove the bottom base and rubber bung from the coil, and pull out the coil and wicking.
  2. You will want a muji cotton pad (or equivalent pad) cut a piece 20mm width, by 10mm height
  3. Tear outer sheet of one side of the pad – this will be used between the inner and outer casing (save this for later)
  4. The coil itself is a 28g parallel wrap, 4mm inner diameter for SS316l, you’ll want 7 wraps
  5. When you complete your wrap leave both coil legs sticking vertical at each end. The legs should finish the wrap at a 12 o clock and 6 o clock position (when looking from top to bottom)
  6. The remaining fluffy part should be wrapped around your coil (fluffy side against the coil)
  7. Now pull the top leg over the outside of the cotton and have it hanging down (if you did step 5 right it should be opposite side to the other leg)
  8. Insert the coil and wicking into the inner casing leaving the legs hanging down
  9. Now wrap the sheet you had left from step 2 around the outside of the inner casing and insert the casing back into the outer (gold casing)
  10. The coil leg that was folded over the top of the wicking will need to be cut to a length so it sits under the rubber bung
  11. The coil leg that was at the bottom of the coil will be cut to a length where it sits on top of the rubber bung
  12. Now put the metal base back in and put the coil in check its resistance is stable on a resistance meter or your mod
  13. Prime it, vape it! Check for short messages to begin with just to make sure you have done everything right
These are the pics I took when stripping it down should help explain some of my steps

Great review King.

I have heard they are working on a RBA coil for this. My source said it will happen so I am crossing my fingers!

Still love the premade coils though, they sure do last.

I am really happy you like your Cobra as much as I like mine. Nice to get some reassurance for others with excellent taste!

Thanks mate :) appreciate it

an RBA deck would be great although hope it doesn't take up too much space in there as the coil is pretty thin!

Hoping someone manages to figure out how to rebuild these premades or at least how to tap it out without damaging the casing

Very nice review on the Asvape Cobra!
Still using my Cobra daily for months now and one of my favorite tanks- no spitting, flooding, gurgling or dry hits or leaking! I was lucky enough to win my 1st but have gone on to buy 2 more- this tank and coils work great for me as I like to vape 25w-35w range! Coils are long lasting, but at times hard to find in stock and wish that they would make a rebuildable coil in the future!
VaporDNA has a .2Ω SS coil as one of the options now- but haven't had a chance to purchase them yet, so I am not sure how they compare to the .5Ω Ni80 .

Thanks Snap much appreciated :)

Gonna have to try and get hold of the SS coils and give them a whirl, if you do manage to get some let me know what you think compared with the N80 ones

I have been trying to hold out till Black Friday- maybe a better sale by then.
I just checked and VaporDNA only has the .2Ω SS316 in stock at the moment. When I do get a hold of them I will let you know what I think!
