In this installation I want to help people interested in coiling make the leap as simple as possible. I hear time and time again people say "it's too complicated" and completely give up on any type of rebuildable weather it be an RDA, RDTA, RBA you name it. In here to tell you, it is NOT complicated. With vaping, you can delve as deep and get as complicated as you want.

Im tired of hearing talk if it being complicated. A 5 wrap kanthal coil costs pennies, compared to upwards of $5 a coil. I honestly think that getting into all those factory coils is more complicated than twisting up a simple .5 dual coil kanthal build.

This thread is for all those people that have questions. I'll be uploading how to's and in some cases I'll be learning with you. Your can never stop learning and in this case why would you want too?

It looks like I cannot copy and paste. I spent a couple days putting this together so I'll likely have to be screen shot.. ugh

Simple 3.0mm build +tips for RDTAs successful wicking technique!!!

I never ever ever let my tails kick it in my tank. Here's why:

It takes up space that could be occupied with more juice.

It is a very inefficient way of wicking. These tanks are easily wicking themselves because your naturally sloshing your tank around with normal use of your mod. I chain vape frequently and have never had a problem with dry hits. I typically don't Scottish roll or even use ID of my coils above 2mm because the smaller the better because it's doing most of the work for you.

Just poke and cover the holes, and insert your jig onto the holes as to make a channel and your good to go.

You can wrap wire with the jig, and most larger multi wire builds are great, but if you want good contact round wire coils make a TMC jig or get a kuro style coiler. I like UD style the best. The threading ain't the best but it's pretty fucking solid.

The bend in the wire is absolutely make or break when using the kuro style coilers. It adds roughly a few lbs of pressure especially when your slow ball it and hold with forefinger.

I don't think it's necessary to do 7 lbs every time I get great coils this way, or even just using a jig it precision screw driver.

I did this build just to show newer guys and have yet to switch it back to the quad twisted ss316l I had previously. I told myself that I am only able to do 1 build a week on each atty. To cut down on waste. If my coils by the end of the week are still in good shape after a flash n dunk I'll continue using and rewick. I have a container where I store Coils that are in good shape.

Mostly those coils get donated to my buddies in the halfway houses around here. I refilled a hand full of there attys just to show and help them out. Hell, im broke as a joke too, I don't mind giving coils to someone that's going to use them.

My all day atty has been my geekvape avacado 22. I don't mind playing with rdas all day infact i love it.. I just don't like hearing people wanting to watch or my gf asking why im always fucking with my vape.

Newish to building. I have a regulated device I like a warm dense vape. Don't care about clouds just want flavor. I have a serpent mini and and a smm on the way
Does ohms really matter that much on a regulated device? I have many different tanks that I use and all I vape at a differnt watt to give me what I like. So is it just ramp up time or what.

I agree that coiling is absolutely not rocket surgery, and it doesn't have to be even as complicated as you illustrated above -- 5 to 10 wraps of kanthal around a drillbit makes an excellent coil -- it doesn't have to look like jewelry to vape well! Choose the gauge of the wire based on the power level you typically prefer -- low power, choose a higher gauge (finer wire), for greater resistance; higher power, choose a lower gauge (fatter wire), for less resistance; the latter will yield more vapor, naturally, but not everyone wants that. I vape at less than 10w, so I use 29ga -- more sturdy than 30ga, heats faster than 28ga.

The size of the drillbit, or whatever you use to wrap the wire around, matters only in the amount of wicking you use. I always recommend that once you learn to wick a given size perfectly, you stick with that size, because learning the "proper amount" of wicking is by far the most challenging aspect of any of this. I use a drillbit because a) we've got LOTS of drillbits; b) with a drillbit I know the exact size. I personally prefer a 3/32 drillbit (2.38mm) but anything from 5/64 to 1/8 can be used.

You don't need any special tools or skills; if you can wrap something around a slender cylinder -- such as wire around a drillbit -- and operate a screwdriver, you can build and mount a coil. It takes about 5-10 minutes, once you get accustomed to doing it. And as @zombievapereview mentioned, the cost of wire and cotton is pennies, compared to the multi-dollar amounts for finished coils. Self-made coils also tend to last longer, but when they do need replacing, for whatever reason, you don't hear the little "cha-ching" in your head just because you have a new coil installed. :) You also don't have to wait around with your thumb up your butt for USPS to bring your damn coils so you can vape -- you become independent!

I got some mulit pre built coils to try them out to see what "style" I would like. Issue im having is my juice taste funky not sure if it's the wire brand (demon killer) or the tank itself. The juice taste like it should in the other pre built throw away coil tanks I have just fusturaring. I want to enjoy my vape and not have it complicated. And to buy a bunch of wire to. Experiment with isnt somerhing i want to do i hate to waste.

Ohms don't matter AS MUCH, but they still play a big part in regulated devices. I believe now all the pros can chime in if I'm wrong, but some regulated devices won't put there max wattage out on really low builds, and some devices albiet fewer and fewer, will for .5 and up better than lower ohms. Also quite a many mods allow for .1 and up, some .15 and up. Now, I've got a device that will fire below it's .1 but won't fire a full 200. Someone else can probably answer better. You just need to get to know your device and it's capacity and capabilities

That's weird, there only problem I had with demon killer was the ohms being wayyyy the fuck of, and them calling coils alien that were flat Clapton, tiger coils are not tiger coils, and well, then being kanthal. I don't care what every one says about it being shitty Chinese wire. I get it, we all like our home grown organic type of vapes. We like everything to be A+++ quality. Well, just because it's Chinese doesn't necessarily mean it's total crap.

I will say, demon killer are what got me to see that I could probably do a better job that some machine, and a few hundred kids with coil jigs in a sweat shop on China. If your just looking for plug n play get Wotofo. I liked those. Or even better, buy your coils from @CrazyChef or @raymo2u. A pair of good quality coils like them dudes make can last months if you take care of them and rewick. Don't fucking fry em. I get way more out of the quality stuff I build rather than commercial sold coils.

Those demon killer coils will not last dry burning them, they over oxidize, and are truly not the greatest quality kanthal. My Nichrome builds from TEMCo last 10 times as long and Nichrome is supposed to not last as long as kanthal.

I know I'm mixed in what I say, the coils will simply do, there not terrible, pieces of shit, but you could do better.

If your not into waist spend a little more on exotic coils, or from someone on here. I'm the first to cheap out when you can but coils are the bread and butter of vaping.

I sincerely hope this helped sorry I could not chime in sooner

When I put the demon killer coils in and dry burned them they started smoking. Now mind you I didnt burn the shit out of them. Just till they turned red. I just got a smm and used the coils that came with it and they didn't smoke or taste funny at all. I just want to get away from the subohm tanks. I guess I'm a little overwhelmed with all the differnt types and sizes of wire. I have got some good starting point advice. I understand the whole ohms thing now. I have looked into wire and realized it's not super expensive its actually less than a 5 pack of coils. I want to find a good quality multi pack of kanthal. And go from there only thing I'm not sure of is wrap wire to fo NI or SS

Also after I make a coil and install it should I even dry fire it? To get hot spots to fire evenly or whatever reason? Or should I just wash them with alcohol or something

With SS you do a very low wattage pulse, 10 Watts or the lowest you can get it to fire, then slowly go up a little, they do not like big, long pulses

Kanthal needs to be heated before and after wrapping, big time, with lots of pulsing in between

Yes... to check for and resolve any hot spots, and to get rid of any remaining crap on the wire -- the smoking you mentioned was probably machine oil. Also it lets you check the resistance right on the mod, and you can see the resistance "settling in" from an initial pulse, and a pulse once it's wicked and juiced. I don't dry burn fresh coils nearly as hard as when I'm dry-burning to remove gunk, but a little bit lets the wire get accustomed to its new shape and resistance, plus gets rid of anything you don't want, like hot spots, machine oil, etc.

Thank you guys. I appreciate it.

As previously stated, here's the rundown of how I install coils.

1. Coils. However you achieve this get the amount of Coils to match the airflow. For starters, I do not ever install single coil if the atomizer offers double airflow. Know your equipment. If it offers 2 AF options I use two Coils. From my experience atomizers that are dedicated dual, or single just work better when used and matched with the AF.

Basically what I'm staying is if it offers dual, or in some cases triple, I use the max number of coils per airflow. Singles for single dual for dual.

2 I install the coils while ON my COIL JIG. Pushed as far in advance possible, then screw down, and pull outward. I don't ever put my Coils dead close, they just need to be by your airflow so it can blow underneath and up.

Take the time to make every install as perfect as possible. My famous words are dun dun dun... DO IT Right the FIRST TIME.

The only factor you need to consider resistance (ohms) in a regulated mod, is that your resistance is within the mods limits. Usually 0.10 ohm low up to 3.0 ohm high. Aside from that, resistance is never factored in, since regulated mods run based on wattage. You set (define) the wattage, the mod does the rest. Use clapton or alien builds for flavor and lower airflow and wattage. You want the juice to vaporize but you don't want it to thin due to excess airflow. Hence, to avoid burning, you also have to lower your wattage and balance it out. Smaller drip tips also provide better flavor.. larger ones provide bigger clouds.

It is a regulated mod. Any mod that states the wattage is regulated. Wattage determines how much power is sent from the batteries in regulated mods.
In unregulated (mechanical mods) it is totally the coil resistance that determines wattage. Volts squared / resistance = wattage.
ie... 3.7v sqr / 0.15 ohm = 91w

Only when firing I believe. It wouldn't know how many volts to output until you hit the firing button.

It depends on the MOD like an RX200S displays the Voltage output for the set wattage like a Pico or a Cuboid Tap. These are just 3 I have sitting next to me that I was able to check very easily.

What is the best pg/vg ratio I’ve got this 80/20 vg/pg and I don’t know if it’s because of that or that I just keep changing flavours but I’m going through coils very quickly I’m smoking fruity flavours too not sure if that has anything to do with it so new to this have so many questions?? Also not sure if this helps vaping with 0.4 ohm coil at around 53-55watt

Too High wattage, not priming correctly or breaking in by slowly raising the wattage until you find the sweet spot. These are just a few of the most common causes along with sweet e-Liquids but I have never found high VG to mess with my coils as I vape high or Max VG all the time.

Ok so I’ve been told it’s better to over prime the coil rather than under prime it then set wattage to 15 take a few long puffs without firing then turn wattage up to 25watts do a few quick hits on the fire button then turn it up to 45watts and was told to leave it at that because it was producing plenty of clouds does that sound about right??

Ok so I’ve been told

I run my coils at 20-25% less than the minimum recommended wattage but that is because I get a good cloud and a pleasant vape that way but I take longer puffs than most.

Yes, dry fire to get your coil glowing evenly from the middle of the coil. You will notice some smoke coming off the coil when you first fire them. This is oil from the factory burning off. So there really is no need to wash your coils after building.

While I'm waiting for my stuff to be delivered so I can start building I've been watching builds and lessons but I'll start with 2 questions.
1. I've seen some coils placed awfully close to the build deck. What is the minimum distance between the coil and the deck?

2. What determines the number of wraps and the inner diameter of the coil?

I'm Canadian,,,so I gotta say Thank you in advance,,,,,;)

1. Minimum distance I'm not sure. I've had some coils pretty close to the deck and never had any arcing or anything
2. The ohm range that you're trying to reach is what determines how many wraps and inside diameter of the coil. I'd suggest get a coil calculator like using steam-engine.org or I use the app on Android called Vape Tool. Has an ohm calculator as well so you can stay within your batteries limits. That's the main thing. You don't want to stress your batteries.
