New to Vaping and already have issues with my first kit

Hi Vaping Underground !

French living in Tokyo for almost 10 years, I am what you call a "social smoker".
I love to drink outside and smoke cigarettes (generally 8mg)
When I stay out late, I can smoke an entire pack and next mornings are terrible (alcohol is also involved).
I Watched tons of videos on Youtube, took time to read as much info as possible on the web and switched to vape few weeks ago !

It was quite confusing at first.
Many mods, juices, vaping style, batteries etc.

My first purchase was the D19 Joyetech.

Then I wanted to get a better flavor and went for and RDA with a SMOK mod.

I have many issues with my SMOK mod, error messages "battery check", "short atomizer" or "don't abuse protetcs"...
What did I do wrong ?
I wonder if this is a battery problem, the coils, my SMOK mod, the RDA that is not adapted...
I am a bit lost and seeking help :zombie:

Here is my set :

- SMOK AL85 mod https://www.smoktech.com/kit/al85
- DIGIFLAVOR Drop RDA http://digiflavor.com/project/drop-rda/
- Fused Clapton coil 0.25 ohm/ 0.3 ohm https://www.gearbest.com/accessories/pp_619208.html?wid=21
- Efest 18650 - 3000mAh 35A 3.7V

The problems I get with the Drop RDA set on my SMOK AL85 are :
- when pressing the fire button "battery check"
I could vape at the beginning (0.25 ohm coils) but only at lower Watt below 30W, otherwise the message will be displayed again.
I changed the coils to 0.3 ohm and I can't vape even lower than 30W, now it has displayed "short atomizers" "don't abuse protects"
- the battery is getting hot
I can feel the mod is really hot after vaping, (chain vaping almost impossible)
PCB went high sometimes above 50C°

SMOK AL85 can go up to 80W but I couldn't vape above 35W with the Drop RDA set.

Also when I screw the D19 tank on the SMOK AL85 I had no problem to vape.

What seems to be the problem ? I need your insight ~

Many thanks in advance :bliss:

Welcome aboard

Out of interest how long are the threads at the bottom of the drop compared to D19? Can you take a side by side pic and post it please

This bit

F4963EC6-FCEC-4883-A0A9-A2AC3F6AE916.jpeg

When you mounted you coils on the drop did you use a resistence reader? Also were the coils heating evenly when you mounted and dry fired them

Try send some pics of your Drop build..Seems like your build on the Drop has a short..
The D19 tank is a subohm so it’s probably fine..

Thank you very much for replying !
I didn't use a resistence reader.. should I ?

Here are the pics ~

The mod is gonna have problems handling those coils you need a dual battery really

Threads are a tad longer in the drop could be causing an issue with the 510 on the mod try unscrewing just slightly

Thank you so much for your help !

@choderfett I tried with the cap off and I couldn't fire properly. But from the video and the screenshot my coils are too high,
I will fix that.

@KingPin! For a first mod I wanted something compact and not too expensive. Will check for a dual battery mod and hope it will change the performances. Thanks for the recommended batteries !

Will get back to you after few modifications :)

maybe you need to slow down a little bit. Doing lots of research, then building coils without ohms tester is quite foolish... also the resistance is probably too low for your mod, go back to the tank until you learn what all those errors mean... even my triple battery mod wont fire on a coil set lower then 0.15... just sayin...

I see, undestood for the battery mods thank you !
Regarding the coils I just bought already made clapton coils. I am not ready to build my own coils, maybe one day but for now I just want it to work... It's a bit frustrating but I bet I'll have to learn all those detailed electronic terms and concepts.

In regards to the possible short issue, I have two drop rdas and love them. One of the reasons I bought them is because they gave you the ability to drop your coils in and then cut the legs.

I did that the first time I put a build in it and a peice of the wrap wire flew in between the post and the outer wall. I didn't notice it until I tried to fire it and it shorted out and if I remember correctly, even sparked a bit. I had to use a peice if paper to get the wire out.

So yeah, I'll never cut my legs inside the rda again. Especially since they're used on mech mods.

Take a look at the voopoo drag, its literally made for the drop, kidding but its a good dual battery mod that's still compacter than most dual mods out there. Sure its bigger than the al85 and even boxier but everybody is dropping the price on it, so you defiantly would be getting an absolute outstanding upgrade for around $35-55 maybe even lower since you're sitting closer to the source of whole sellers than we do lol. Even the "too" would be fine, since you could run it as single or/and dual battery, if you can overlook the sheer flashyness and weird look it has.

In general anything dual would be fine, don't feel obligated to buy my suggestions I'm just trying to be of help sometimes :) also I would try looking at other vendors, I'm not sure if amazon would be even good for that since we can't buy mods/tanks off amazon here in the US. Prices might be better somewhere else.

I do clip my leads inside the drop and even have my single coil set as high as you do, I think mine is even a bit higher, but after I'm done building I'll turn the whole RDA around and shake the hell out of it, making sure anything clipped or not noticeable will fall out of it.

Thank for all the replies,
I lowered my coils and tried to fire but the issue remains...

I noticed that when I fire at less or around 20W I usually get the "short atomizers" "don't abuse protects"
and "check battery" when I fire at higher Watts.

I will get and better battery and try again :(

Also, PCB gets really high sometimes over 60 C° ! Is that normal ?

Thanks in advance !

No it is not normal or good for PCB to get too hot in fact could be another reason it’s saying no

best avoid using it with the drop altogether

That should fare better especially with the higher resistance and low wattage requirements ...it’s a lot different to the drop though hehe

I would bet that if you removed one of those coils and ran with just one coil, that it will fire with no warning... have you tried yet? (i'm still leaning towards your coils being too low of resistance for your mod when there is 2 of them.)

Back when I used AL85 it sometimes had trouble firing it's own .15 T6 coil, and was dependant on the battery and % of battery charge. The battery cap would get hot when firing and/or it wouldn't fire correctly. That single cell mod couldn't keep up. Instead of using lower resistance coils with AL85, keep AL85 as a backup mod for higher resistance coil/other atty, and the dual cell mod should resolve your mod issues using the coils you have, provided the new mod can fire as low as you want it to. (.25 / 2 = .12-.13 ish)

There are some good dual batt 18650 mods that are pretty small.

Hi guys and thank you for all your suggestions !
Finally had time to try firing the Drop RDA with 1 coil and see how it goes... still get the battery error (see picture)

Then I mounted the Berseker Mini MTL and it works smoothly.

I guess I need another mod for the Drop RDA. I don't want to buy a too expensive one but something durable. Any recommendations are welcome. Will keep the AL85 for the Berserker Mini.

Have a great Sunday !

Excellent glad it’s working for you now :stars2:

I’d say look to invest in a dual battery squonker, whilst it may not be the most exoctic squonker out there the latest geekvape G200 doesn’t seem to have been too problematic for people and it’s affordable ...bottom feeding your Drop will be a lot less hassle free than dripping will

If you don’t mind dripping I’ve had great results with the aspire speeder in terms of affordability it’s one of the better ones I’ve used, it performs well in all areas

I was always wondering about those squonker mod. The ejuice doesn't come on top of the coil so I was wondering if you get slightly less flavor... but it seems really convenient. Will check that out !
Both geekvape G200 and Aspire Speeder have a nice design.
It's time to hit the play button and watch some reviews

Yeah I do think painting the coil when dripping is the absolutely best way for flavour but it’s also a chore unless the well is large enough for a good 7 or 8 pulls ...squonking is a slight trade off with flavour but it’s negligible after that first couple of pulls

...once you get the hang of how much to squonk it’ll become second nature, it’s a kind of push and hold action to soak the cotton then release to drain the excess liquid back into the bottle....each rda(rsa people are calling them now) is different as to how much you do this.

At first you’ll make mistakes (don’t worry we all have and I still oversquonk sometimes haha) you don’t need to stuff the wells with as much cotton though cause you want free movement of the liquid

There is actually no law to forbid vaping ejuice with nicotine, as well as no law to allow selling ejuice with nicotine.
I read online that selling pure nicotine is apparently forbidden (need to confirm that)

Vaping is too recent and not as popular as in the US for example.
Thus the legislation is a bit slow and doesn't authorise Vape shop to sell ejuice with nicotine yet.

Hi guys !

A little update with my rda problem.
Following your suggestions @KingPin! I decided to purchase the aspire speeder ;)
I also bought 2 batteries Sony vtc5a and I can finally vape with the RDA Drop without error messages !
Thank you so much :xD:

I still have few questions tho...
Earlier today I went to a vape shop and ask the staff if my build was secure.
He told me that I could vape up to 130W with my current build.
> 2 clapton coils 0.3 (on the screen it displays 0.13 ohms)

I tried to fire at 130W and found that the vape was very hot, the Drop RDA get's very hot as well !!
Is this a normal ? Could it be dangerous ?
Afraid of burning my fingers on the RDA I decided to reduce the Wattage 130W > 70W
It seems safer...

What do you guys think, do you vape at higher Wattage without risking to burn your fingers ?

Thanks in advance as always !

Excellent glad to hear it’s working for you

Vape to a wattage you are comfortable with mate don’t go by what they advised... I personally don’t feel the need to take a set of Clapton’s past 80W for instance, in fact I’ll vape em in the 60s for the most part (for dual coils)
