Build Stations

This isn't quite a post your builds type post so thought I would make a new thread. Made on a CNC router table out of 3/8 & 1/4 hdpe and clear polycarbonate for a riser to make my coil jig run level and square with my spinLT. Also modded my spinLT by removing a bearing and making a new triangle out of a paper clip to make it a little more forgiving and smoother turning.

Good lord tell me those materials were free! I got a nice big piece of UHMW that might be something I could use.

I'm just starting and keeping it portable. I like to make stuff wherever I lay my head. ;)

Yea it was all scrap material from my work that would have gone in the trash... I wanted a surface that i could hard mount my spinner to that i can pick up and move to wherever I want to build. Its 15x30 and I can spin up to about a 24 inch strand at a time... Just enough to make a decore for 2-3 alien coils theres also 1/4" foam adhered to the bottom of the board and a piece on the drill rest to cut down on vibration and noise transfer from the drill motor

I have a “girl cave” in our house. I have my station set up down there. I like having an area dedicated to just coil building and making juice!

This was super weird... Id never even heard of UHMW until you mentioned it, So I looked it up to see what it was... And at work today a sheet came in that I had to run parts out of on the router... Coincidence much? lol

It's a pretty common material in food processing plants. Stands for Ultra High Molecular Weight I believe. Self lubricating and tough. I've seen it wear out, but only after very heavy use for a few years. You can use thick sheets of it in place of conveyor rollers if necessary and it'll last as long with no maintenance other than cleaning.

Funny. My gf and I were talking about coincidence yesterday. Seriously. Coincidence?

Looks like a helluva nice build table. I would hate to use that much of the stuff but so long as it was free scrap, why not right? Awesome setup. Mine at the moment looks more like something scrapped together from the wastelands, a short piece of 2x3 just long enough to get a clamp over and a vertical piece of 2x3 tall enough to use my drill upright. I screwed two screws along the inside of a keyring angled to hold tension on it and mounted the keyring flat to the 2x3 so I'd have an attachment point for the swivels.

Not much to be said about it other than it works. Only thing that I'm not happy with, I need a slight angled platform for my drill. When it sits flat on the battery pack the chuck isn't completely horizontal, it angles up a few degrees so I have to watch the tension I put on the core wires. I just needed something to anchor the swivels and spent literally 5min throwing it together lol (and it looks it).

Eventually I might make something a bit better, still in the process of getting a workbench together for my utility shed. I could probably fit something to the bench although no power wired to the shed at the moment and lighting isn't the best. Not for this sort of up close work anyway.

I normally work on my computer desk, and I used to use a small board with a screw in it that I hung my swivels on that I would clamp to my desk, then I upgraded to clamping the spin lt to the desk.... After about 8 months or so I got sick of having a clamp hanging off my desk between my keyboards and mouse and I didn't want to screw it into the top of my desk.... That's when I started designing lol

I don't use jigs though, I made dual alien coils with just a screwdriver other day. I was quite impressed. I just love doing wraps rather than using a jig, I find it really relaxing

I really want a wood top table like that just wish it was open underneath, you feel that way ray? Shit I don't know now I think about it... You get that one from harbor freight?

I'm thinking I need a pegboard now for my wire spools. As for the wood top,it was the main reason I went with a black surface cus my wires were disappearing against the wood grain when I was trying to tie together multi cores.

I got it off ebay for $180 and built it myself but you can "not install" the drawers and leave it open...I rest my fee on the bottom part

The weight of the bench and how solid it is is why I wanted it...traffic shakes my house and I use the bench to shoot on because it minimizes rattling and shaking, I could drop a sledgehammer on the top and nothing on the bench would move...thats something I couldnt see any other bench doing for me.

Yea that's where I did my first ones as well. Gingerly wrapping in front of my monitor and since I have fairly poor lighting (not task oriented like I need for wire builds) I used the glow from the monitor with a white page haha. May need to seriously get some wiring to my shed once I get it finished up if I plan to make more than a few coils.

I've got a smaller work surface in the shed already, around 16" deep by 5ft or so just covered with an osb table surface for general things. Planning on a bench with an mdf surface around 24" by 6 or 8ft with a replaceable hardboard insert. Something solid enough for woodwork with holes for bench dogs and a couple of clamps, plan to use it for multipurpose as well though. I've got some of that thin rubber runner that I'll be able to throw on top for messier stuff like chainsaw sharpening or other tasks so I don't gunk up the surface. Some task lighting would be a good addition, just have to run it from the service box at the pole. Thinking the main bench would be easy enough to sort out for wire wrapping as well.

The real issue is being able to see what I'm doing, need me some of those magnifiers with work lights attached like something Rick Moranis used in 'honey I shrunk the kids' lmao. Be building coils like

My desk is downstairs in my office/computer/vape room. I got booted downstairs long ago cause my wife wanted to use the kitchen table for something silly like eating on.
I just revamped a old computer desk and built the hippie colored shelves. I just have a L shaped piece of wood with a couple swivels attached then clamp onto the table so my drill stands up to make claptons, those DIY spool bobbins work great keeping consistent pressure while wrapping claptons. Those are different gauge claptons in front of the black felt on the cork board. I'm enjoying the 30/34 claptons at 1.4ohm, its easy on the batts. I fixed a couple old sigelei Zmax hitters I had put away that had wonky fire button causing the menu to pop up all the time so now getting some use out of the chitload of 10amp 18500's I have but never use anymore cause they are gutless and only 1100mAh firing lower ohm builds.
I've accumulated over 4 years worth of vape junk that take up a closet and a few rubbermaid storage units. The 2nd pic of the shelves is a older pic than the first cause I'm too lazy to take recent pics of my desk every time it gets changed around.

Sum it all up in 1 word...LEGO It hold Temco spools nicely....
lfwPG49.jpg

and for those little bits that roll around. The socket I pounded a old KTS mech cap into to hold the subtank base nicely being somewhat heavy and up off the table makes things easier to work on. That's a Yaeliq spout cap I cut and with a bent pin put into the jug first so you don't make a airlock it funnels juice much faster than those mini funnels

LEGO ... that is AWESOME! I'm so inspired to build something now.

build station v2. i moved a few months ago, but only half set up my stuff when i got here. it was just enough to do the occasional build and maintenance stuff, but it needed some attention. i finally unpacked all of my stuff (vape gear, tools, related knick knacks and trinkets) and organized it. it feels good just sitting there. hopefully i can catch a break from life and do some building now that its all set up

Every other Sunday is a free night for me, tonight is that night! Put a board under stuff and over the bowed-in card table

waddayagunnamake? how is the new drill setup treating you? oh i am going off topic, ill edit in a pic of my upgraded workspace shortly...

edit - heres my upgraded lighting and wire rack. i put parchment paper over the lights to diffuse them a little. seems to work ok if i turn the rest of the lights out, but i still have some experimentation to get great lighting in my pics. i feel like the lights and marco lens are already a pretty dramatic improvement though...

This setup is a huge improvement over the old craftsman cordless on a tall work bench. Bench was meant to be stood at, so even if I sat on a tall stool I felt like a little kid at the grownup table :D this card table is just the right height, but had a terrible bow in the middle, so sturdy board on top, and put my swivels on something that can move around a bit

I <3 my drill and vise, I put some foam between the jaws and my drill to give it some cushion - perfect

I'm working up the nerve to paraclapton ribbon stacks to try a staggerton lol *grimace* :D

I used my kitchen table unfortunately. I just have a nail next to the window frame that holds my swivels at the same height as the drill. For lighting I use over head, natural light and an LED flashlight. Keep materials in a tool box for out of "her" way storage so I don't get the stink eye. Lol bad enough I'm using her grandmothers table.

Haha yep, even fixed my car with some duct tape once!

How do you guys clean/ lubricate your swivels?
I'm yet to clean or lubricate mine, M.terk uses ejuice, some people swear against it. I honestly don't know what would be best. I assume lithium grease would be best but having that near where you're building is questionable, definitely wouldn't want any of that residue on your coils

I just move my keyboard out of the way when I need to build and use my desk. Tools are in tool boxes and also a set in my desk drawer. I'd rather be vaping though................. Just screw in a coil works better for me.

Lubricate swivels? Really those are throw away items that will probably last 100,000 turns or more? Some people tlike that Cromass are cheap though and self admitted.

my head shaver thing came with some mach1ne 0il and i have put a drop on each swivel and two into my spinLT, twice in total over the last couple years. they seem to be fine. i would guess i put 100k rotations on mine every month or two. i have had them for at least 18 months. the only thing i had trouble spinning on them was that 36/46 decore i did for the tiny aliens...and that build still went fine so it wasnt much of a trouble in the end.

Zhurrie

You only need a single drop, maybe two tops, of 3 in 1 oil for a swivel and you'll never have an issue. Super light weight oil like that or sewing machine oil is what you want. Not lithium or anything else, those will attract dust/debris and work against you.

I got to warn you, it doesn't spin unless everything else screws up - it's Too big, it makes everything wobble like crazy when it spins, it's my warning to STOP

It's a 320 lb test Krok, I got it off of ebay...but I don't like it, the smaller KVD by Mustad spin much easier

Ah ok I appreciate the warning. Maybe I don't need it then. I thought maybe the bearings would be better but yea the weight thing I guess would mess it up.

Nice Schecter...and is that a 6 string bass, or a strat style with funky tuning knobs?

Don't tell me there's yet another metalhead builder here?!!

(Please tell me there's another metalhead builder here, we'll start a nerd club)

Could this be counted for the club? Cymbals are still bagged from last show.
