Melted Coil leg, help

Got my coil master kit yesterday and made my first coils using SS316L 26ga. They were working fine but me being me I used too many different flavour juices so I decided to change the cotton. When I fired it without wick to burn and clean the coils one of the legs melted and one coil dropped on to the base of my rda, now I was quick enough with the tweazers before it welded itself but I feel a little dubious about building again without advice. have fitted a couple of pre-made coils for now so I am back up and running but it is very hot with these coils. I did 12 wraps on the 3.5mm jig with the ss wire.

Any advice or am I just being a newbie builder wuss?

Did you short it or allow some of the coils to bunch up and create a hot spot?

Overheated stainless when cleaning?

Sounds like you fired the Stainless Steel too much or too hot. Should never get SS Red.

Just heat it more slowly or at much lower wattage next time, and make sure the legs are Not heating up first. If they are, use tweezers to separate the legs from the rest of the coil.

Wire will not weld to an RDA

Actually if the coil is connected to a Positive Post and grounds against the case it could weld to it but would require you to keep firing.

Yep with ss gently pulse until a dull red glow.
If it starts getting bright it WILL melt.

No, no, no, no, no. SS shouldn't glow red because of the toxins that can be created when heated that much. It WILL NOT melt under normal pulsing. There was obviously a short somewhere.

I always pulse mine until a dull red glow in the middle under low light conditions.
I am of course not puffing on it at the time.

Might die any day though.
Maybe vaping SS is so bad I should go back to cigs?

I am amazed at some who go on about the slightest possible toxins from vaping. After having smoked cigarettes for decades....
organic cotton only and such....
sheesh.

I am only interested in a greatly reduced risk factor with vaping.
Vaping is not zero risk.
And I smell lots better and save money too :bliss:

/\ Agree 100%

Some people think they know everything and try to teach others when they should just keep their big fucking mouths shut~! Even when the correct info is posted they continue to spread disinformation. Some I don't care if they kill themselves but do mind when it is attributed to vaping.

I’m one of those people who never dry burns SS. Or any other wire. I just wrap new coils, new cotton, and go for than fresh build smooth flavor.
I will heat a new coil a bit to burn off any impurities but not glow it..
I dry burn once and then new coil.
Usually go at least a week between rewicking, etc.
And I only use round wire builds, parallel coils is a fancy as I go.

If the leg is getting red hot could be a break in the wire somewhere. This has happened to me before just replaced the wire. It was clapton wire

Thanks for all replies, I only asked the question as it was my very first build.

12 wraps on each coil. ( I have a Smok G150 that has a hissy fit if I try to go too low ohm)
The guys in my local b&m told me to heat my coils till they glow and then quickly dip them under the cold water tap to clean them (not while firing it, I'm not as dumb as the assholes using my post for a flame war)
I was firing it at 49w which is what I was vaping at.

This is why it's usually not a good idea to trust vape shop employees.
The best way to clean coils is to heat and brush. Wetting then firing works and can be done, but shortens coil life. This heating/firing wattage is dependant on coil's material, as you are finding out.
Don't know what RDA your using but 12 wraps each coil is a LOT. Make sure the coils have no chance of touching the cap or chimney or anything else that will cause a short. Use different wire or fewer wraps. Once the coils are installed, put the cap on it and see if the mod/ohm reader is reading the coil or showing a short.
49w is too much.

Not saying it's best but works for me every time with SS:
I always space the wraps and make sure they don't touch each other anywhere including the legs, which helps in eliminating hot spots and ensures inside out heating. Also aids in TC if that's what I want to do.
I start with the wattage so low (10w) that even if I hold the fire button down, all I get is maybe a puff of smoke resulting from contaminants such as fingerprints burning off and maybe or maybe not the SS starts to darken and if it doesn't darken I raise the wattage up a few watts and short pulse till it does. Never getting orange, red, or glow,,just color change. Nothing wrong with starting low on watts and needing to increase a little 3 or 4 times to guard against overheating. Once I see that the dark color is happening in the middle wraps of the coil, I know it will fire correctly. Recheck after everything had been heated, that the grubs screws are still tight.

I'm a long ways from coil expert and many here are.
Wire wizard says your 3.5id @ 12 wraps is .46ish for dual coil.

When using it add 1/2 (.5) a wrap for legs pointing in the same direction. You could use the same wire for fewer wraps/lower resistance. What's your target resistance?

Need to learn more about this spacing wraps. I am going to explore the Tube of You for video reference on the subject. Hope you can lend some guidance after if I still require it.

Always seem to wrap very tight here with little to no spacing. It usually seems to work adequately for me. There again perhaps this too is a subjective matter.

Enjoy doing up Clapton wire by hand or drill. I do single strand and fused wire mainly. Not quite gotten ambitious enough or desiring enough to attempt a true Alien wire done up.

I also mix wire materials, NiChrome 80 core wires wrapped with SS316 L, Kanthal A1 wrapped with NiChrome 80 and so on. Can also do same wire material. Like the mixing of materials just as something to do for a chuckle.

Well, off to the Tube of You. :) Run 'er slow.

Alright. I think doing spaced coils might be a good idea. :) Found quite a few excellent videos on the Tube of You about making spaced coils. Then, I applied what had been demonstrated, think I got the knack of it. :) It simply requires a little more deliberation, time in doing the coil to ensure it is in equanimity.

Put a nicely even spaced 24 awg SS316 wrapped round 3 mm ID 10 wraps. Chose that as I did a little figuring once and found that works out to around 0.5 ohm. That will suit my purposes on a Goon LP deck for a mech mod.

The coil glows evenly from the inside out. :) It also cools off rather quickly as well. This means a bit less strain on the metal, as from past recall quicker cooling helps harden the metal yet doesn't create brittleness. Of course, this comes understanding I might be in error. I'm human and memory doesn't always behave correctly.

Will second that as vouching to commonality of it happening. "Bah, didn't want to vape on that coil anyway." That darn Murphy guy does get around. :)

Dear newbie builder wuss,

First, no you're not being that. Second, welcome to the joys, heartaches and curiousness of enjoying making springs. Third, see @The Cromwell for the employee benefits package. :)

A very good piece of advice which I need to recall for myself a lot too. Be patient, not only with other people but with yourself as well. It is fine as well to be simply human.

Coil building is not an arcane art, nor rocket science. Yes, sure we do need our gentle guides and erring on being cautious. Use a little common sense and know it is too late to not do so now, you demonstrated you got common sense. Yay, that makes me happy! :) You're not a droning robo-person.

You might or might not believe it but there some that vape Tide detergent pods. My friend @chopdoc posted a link to an article about such a bit ago.

Well, think I'm heading off. Run 'er slow y'all. :)

Sounds like you have your wattage set way high. Turn it down some. To melt 26 ga wire, thats not an easy thing to do.

It depends on the wire Morely. Kanthal you want them tight yet with SS you want a bit of space between the wraps. Thats the way it was taught to me.

The guys in your local b&m are idiots. Some people do that with kanthal for a quick clean. But you dont want to glow SS wire. Your coils sound huge too. Try 6 wrap spaced dual coils. You will get a way better vape with great flavor.

Yes, and me being about half a ditz at times carried over the mentality of Kanthal to SS. After trying the technique of spacing out SS, I see now how it is a much better way to work up SS. In fact can possibly see how it might help with Kanthal and NiChrome as well. The extra deliberation in getting the coil evenly spaced helps the over all transfer of heat and by extension the (I) current.

Figure if you(general you, as in anyone) can let the current move more efficiently, resistance is gradually nullified in the sense that it takes less voltage to get more (P) wattage. Then, you're doing more "work" with less (I) current and reducing over all strain and drain on a battery. Kind of forgot about this bit of coefficient algorithm, which is prevailing in a lot of the cig-a-likes. They use coils with higher ohm rating, like 2.0 ohm and that decreases strain/drain on batteries.

Leave it to the STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) taught Asian people to realize best use of such math application regarding vaping. :) No, that is not a slight or intended as offensive. I genuinely and sincerely admire smart people making vaporizers, atomizers, mods. Only get a bit envious as my math is always lagging and I need to make a diligent effort to keep it squared up.

Also, can admit to possibly a fair share of *ahem* good drugs *cough* having had an effect on the memory chips in my Mr. Roboto, IBM made brain. Between those and life in general having been as the dog Benji says,"ruff, ruff" well easy to figure being human and getting befuddled. But, ... "One day I too shall be a saint!" *chuckles* ♪♫♬"'til then I'll keep riding on, I'll keep my evil ways, gonna change, one of these days .. yeah, huh, one of these days".♪♫♬

Nope, snowed all day yesterday but stayed a bit above freezing.
Was below freezing this morning but had quit snowing.
