Will only be going out to feed the cats before it thaws unless I sleep lat and it thaws early.
Just didn't want you to end up like me and Jimi falling and getting owie knees...

Speaking of which, today the forecast was for partly sunny (yup, they hit that) with winds 25 gusting to 35 (they blew that! - yes, pun intended). I had to go see a neighbor to buy wheat for the chickens and after I cleared the gate and the sheltering lilac hedges, I tried to get out of the truck and go back to shut the gates. I couldn't open the door. Did I lock it accidentally? No. So push harder you weak old phart. I did, but to get it open, I had to push it with my foot. Then the wind slammed it hard. OK, so I shut the gates and struggled to get the door open and climbed in and even though I thought I was holding it securely, it slammed on my left leg. OUCH! Damn it all to hell! That wind was at least 50 mph or even worse... 60? 70?. Then when I came home and we went out to do chores, Lannie pointed out that there was something wrong with the homestead cabin door - as in, it was missing. We went over to see what the problem was and it was shattered -- literally -- it looked as if it had been hit with a SWAT team battering ram: nothing but pieces. Tomorrow my "to do" list has a priority: make a new door.

Sounds perfectly heinous

That's why my shed doors (facing north) have sheet metal covering them. I've had so many doors get blown apart, that I didn't want it happening again. Our north winds during the winter are easily sustained at over 40mph, with gusts that will knock me on my ass. I did mention that Phillip's windmill was destroyed by a wind gust.

Rich, did you look inside to make sure that the wind had not blown a cow or something thru the door?
Maybe a tumbleweed turned into a frozen snowball?

Those darned tumble weeds scared the bejeesus out of me a few times when driving at night and one would blow in front of me and then hang up under the van and make a racket.

Yeah, I did look inside. Nothing inside seemed out of place, but it is rather chaotic in there anyway. No livestock has access to the area where the cabin sits.

This is a 108 year old wood building. Someone added a carriage room to the north side of it sometime in the 1930s, but essentially is is a 14x14 one-room cabin (not including carriage room) that I am using as a tack room and the carriage room add-on has a bunch of junk stored in it. The door, which faces east, was also wood with a really old glass window at the top. We have had winds up in the 70s many times here and it has never been a problem, but apparently the glue around the old joints (4" wood pins) came apart and once the wind and snow had something to work on, it just disintegrated the damn thing. I doubt I will be able to put it back together, so I'll either make a new one or just cover the hole until I can buy/build a replacement. I really don't want any metal on that antique building.

Went to bed last night after talking to you folks, couldn't sleep so I got back up and deleted spam on here till 2:00 AM.

Was tired when the alarm went off at 7:00 AM. Should sleep like a baby tonight (I hope). I've had problems sleeping for years it seems.

Just made a cup of green tea with pomegranate. I suspect I've become a teetotaler the last few years since I quit smoking. Used to love coffee, now I can't drink it. Kinda give me the same displeasure as the smell of cig-smoke.

Weird, aint it? After I quit smoking, coffee started making me feel like I was gonna puke. Now, I grab a Pepsi when I climb outta bed.

Have you tried using a few coats of oil based paint to protect the wood from the weather? I know it won't last for decades, but at least it can be repainted when the weather wears out the paint.
Nice idea, but the previous owner (a real idiot) covered all the original lap siding with pressboard - the kind that is never (NEVER) supposed to be used externally (it cannot handle being exposed to weather). That is gradually melting away with the harsh weather we get here. I painted it with standard exterior paint, but my goal is to eventually strip it all off and attempt to restore the cabin to its original condition. In the mean time, I am just hoping it will stay up until I can fix it.

I was referring to just the door you need to replace. I tell ya. If I was your neighbor, I would love to help you restore the place.

I love doing renovations too...especially bringing them back to the original design.
Bringing my house back to original is cost prohibitive. When we put a couple of add-ons, the old ship lap was in terrible condition. The asbestos siding was almost as bad. So, we just made the place look more like a semi-modern ranch house. The updated look is nice, especially when most of the neighbors have nice looking semi-modern ranch houses.

Somewhere, buried deep inside this high tech geek, lurks a historian, and I like things to be the way they used to be. OK, I don't want to have to go outside during a blizzard to sit in an outhouse, but even though living in our small old house is often a pain in the ass (you have to step outside the bedroom to have enough room to change your mind), I am really in favor of older styles. Some of the modern shit I see on TV makes me want to barf. I refuse to live in a modern art painting. And I abhor the colors people paint their houses today. YUCK!

Some colors people paint houses ... How about that show where they paint almost everything gray? It upsets me when they go into a perfectly good house, rip everything out, and make it just like the last several hundred homes they worked on.

Which is why I don't watch home improvement shows (well, except reruns for Tim Allen, but that is just for the laughs). :giggle:

In this case, gray is the anti-color. They destroy a beautiful brick facade, by coating it over, and painting it gray. Then, you walk inside, and everything is black, white, and gray. I'd swear Chip Gaines and his wife must be color blind.
Yep...I've watched that show a couple times...you need a LOT of lighting to see where you're going in the homes.

Add the shitty new light bulbs to the mix, a recipe for disaster.

I know this might be touchy, and it really is not politics, but... is this a modern generation (millennials, Z gen, whatever they call themselves today) thing? Are they just so fucking crazy as to think that gray walls with soft blue lighting and purple furniture is what everyone should want? And to look at the menu on the TV, it seems that everyone must love yelling, screaming, perverts, bloody fights, murder... what the hell is wrong with society today?

Speaking of pics, I entertained myself for a little while photoshopping this together on my tablet. I could do better on the laptop, but it is what it is.

Evening Pharts :)

So Sunday's ice storm wasn't all that icy, mostly rained ice pellets. I used to call that corn snow when I skied. The freezing rain part only lasted a few hours and was on top of all the ice pellets. Power failed for a couple of hours due to branches downed from high winds. I'll take it ... could have been a lot worse.

Not going to be on too late tonight. My wife is getting her remaining few upper teeth pulled tomorrow morning and having a full denture fitted right after. Going to be calling her 'Gummie' for a while, but don't tell her I said that :teehee:

Had all my uppers out years ago. I find it easier to eat without my denture than with it.

I had every tooth in my mouth pulled the same day and the top and bottom full dentures were in my mouth when I woke up. How is it they aren't making a mold of her mouth before removing the teeth?

Anyone here try making their own Ginger Ale from scratch?

Was watching a bunch of videos on the subject, I'm going for it tomorrow.

Gotta make a Ginger Bug for starters.....fermented ginger....then on to the next step/phase after a few days.
