Started smoking again after 8 months of vaping. Would like to quit again.

Due to stress and personal problems I started smoking again. First it was just a couple cigarettes a day mixed with vaping. I slowly started to smoke more and vape less. Now I just smoke and when I try to vape I either find it unsatisfying (pre-built coils) or stop becausing of coughing and throat irritation (rebuildables). I would like to get back to strictly vaping since I've been less stressed but haven't been successful because of the previously stated problems. Is there anything I could try to lessen the irritation and coughing (sometimes coughing up phlegm) I get when using my rebuildables?

Hi there Krypted, It's never too late to quit!!
Visit some of the tank, coil and rebuild able threads here for some great idea's on whats new in vaping, also grab yourself some disposables for the time being just to curb the urge while you get yourself reintroduced to vaping, Welcome and I wish you much luck!!!!:)

lower the amount of pg you use, the coughing up of phlegm is your lungs repairing itself from the smoke damage. When you say rebuildables, are you talking about RDA and wrapping your own coils?

I use max VG liquid. The only PG is from flavoring and nic solution. The rebuildable is an Aqua RBA.

Actually, for some of us high VG causes bad coughing and various other nasties! And the lower the ohms the worse it is - which is a pity, because high VG is so much smoother.

You may find you do better on a 50/50 mix.

It think the coughing has more to do with the fact that you are smoking and vaping at the same time. You may be coughing when you vape, but my bet is it's the smoking that causing it. Maybe try again to go cold turkey off the stinkies and see if you can vape without coughing for a few days.

When I started vaping again, I was mixing smoking. I figured out, the PG in the juice was making me cough. When you mix vaping and smoking, imo, you'll get smokers cough.

Once I quit smoking, I quit coughing. High PG and or high nic (24 and above) also make me cough the first vape or two.

I agree. It's sort of like drinking beer and drinking wine. Drink one or the other and you're fine. Drink them both together and you'll likely get sick.

I would guess the coughing is worse if you vape first thing and less so if you stick with it during the day. When I first started vaping I was using max VG and nearly gave it up due to coughing. Changing to a 50/50 mix helped for me. Part of it is the garbage in your lungs from the tobacco. The less you smoke and the more you vape that will diminish. Everybody's different. For some any ratio is fine. Some are sensitive to PG and some VG. You aren't responding well to max VG so I suggest you back off to at least 50/50 and see what you get. Remember that as you smoke less or quit the smokes there are physical symptoms related to that and not all have to do with vaping. Good luck!

Good advice here already - what I can add is that you might be getting more nic than you'd bargained for with your RBA, especially if your coil is well built at a lower ohm and well wicked you could be vaping juice more efficiently than with your clearos.

I used 6 and 12 mg juices when I was using clearos, but I'm mostly at 3 mg now that I primarily drip on my own builds. You might try sticking with the RDA and dropping the nic a level to see if the harshness fades...

I know this will sound stupid but you could try cough drops until you get this sorted out.

Wish you the best though!

I have a vamo v2 paired with a protank clone and 1.5ohm coils. It doesn't cause the irritation nealy as bad as the aqua but it's not really satisfying either. I mixed up some 3mg liquid and tried it with my aqua and it helped a little. I think the flavoring is causing the irritation though so I was going to mix up a flavorless batch and see if the problem persist.

Edit: just noticed if you were asking if I was using variable wattage with the aqua. No, I am using a nemesis with it.

The first time I quit I progressed from cig-a-likes 24mg -> ego 18mg -> vamo 18mg -> mech mods and RBAs 12mg and never had the irritation or caughing. I think the flavoring may be causing some of it so I'm going to mix a bottle of 3mg flavorless liquid and try it on my RBA. If that doesn't work I'll just try to stick with the Vamo and EGOs and increase the nicotine to something higher than 12mg.

As you can tell from the above posts, we are here to help and are cheering you on and want you to quit and stay off cigs.
Cigs contain a cough suppressant. That's why they are hard to quit, when you quit you cough all that $#it up. I got off them by starting each day with a few less cigs in my cig case. I stayed at 3 a day for several weeks, that first one of the day and the ones after meals were hard to give up, but finally got off them in Jan.

Not sounding stupid at all, I sometimes use the listerine strips, it opens up my air ways , with some juices it can make me cough as well.

me 3!! I love those things!! I try to keep some in the house, bags, and car..
but it's impossible.. my son loves them as much as i do!!

I even tried the squirt ones.. but they aren't as good as the strips.. :)

I asked the Dr why they help me breath better sometimes and he said it was the menthol in them.

menthol is very good..

also when you vape.. switch up to a mint type.. change your juice often!
keep your back ups ready too.. and when you get that urge to smoke, vape..

i consider myself still a smoker.. i know how hard it is..
however there will be weeks i go with no cigs.. and other times where nothing will help but a cig..
i have gone over 8 months without smoking.. its a mind thing..

i know people do not like to think of mind things.. but for me, this is the best..
when i can vape and be satisfied.. ;)

the other.. try out the kids candy isle too.. jolly ranchers are terrific! and this time of year, candy canes! :)

I wish you the best and i know, if i can do this, you can do this.

Coils on the aqua can get pretty caked with juice and it's fairly airy draw if opened all the way with top piece also opened to chimmey... are you dry burning the coils after you change the wick? Just my experience with aqua

I used it for about six months than stopped vaping. It was my go to device except when driving. In the car I would use the vamo or ego.

I dry burn the coils whenever I change cotton. I rebuild the coils about once a week and change cotton every other day.

As others posted, I would be curious too if it may be the max vg. I know for myself a high vg gives me this weird feeling of a lump of 'phlegm'(I know it isn't but feels like it) in the back of my throat. Cutting down to a 50/50 mix helped me alleviate that feeling. Hang in there though, we all got your back. :D

I will state IMHO the reason I see so many people go back.. In my area there are a lot of Vape bars and I know everyone and the ones that go back cut their nicotine to low to fast... there is no reason to fear using 24mg or higher if needed to stay off Cigs now that's with an atomizer with an RDA I just went down from 12mg to 8 and that's after 17 months because I smoked 3 packs a day for 30 years... you have to be due diligent and keep that nicotine level up once you do you will not ever want a cig again...

This is me. Too much VG makes me gag. 40/60, 50/50 and 60/40 all work fine, though. If I go above 60% VG, I can feel it in my lungs.

I have some 50/50 left over from MBV I can try. I'll give it a shot and see how it goes.

Can't hurt. VG feels like it leaves a heavy coating in my throat and lungs. PG feels light and airy without the coating to me.

here is what i would try..

vape nothing but pg for at least a day, see how you feel.. (make it plain)
do the same with vg..

as far as your nic.. leave it out till you figure out what is making you cough..
then you will know if it is either the pg or vg..

i can not do much pg at all.. i cough for days.. then for a few weeks sound like i have been at a rock concert for a month..
allergies can pop up at any time.. as well as disappear too..

Another thing that sounds counterintuitive but really isn't is taking the vapor DIRECTLY into your lungs.
Many smokers hit a cigarette by pulling smoke into their mouth and then inhaling it.
Vaping is different.
Don't seal your lips around the tip and draw in as much straight air as you do vapor and 'lung inhale' just like you are taking a breath.
Like I said, it sounds like it would make it worse, but it doesn't.
As an added bonus, it will seem like you are generating more vapor.

Ghost makes a very good point.

That is how I normally vape.

Mrs Ghost thought she had an allergy to PG because every time she vaped she would cough and get a headache.
Simply changing the way she inhaled corrected the problem instantly

I will agree totally with this.

When I started vaping, I was using it just like a cig. Wrong way to vape!
Doing it this way (like a cig) also makes the tank "pop" more in your mouth. Nothing like the hot juice hitting your tongue like little volts of electricity.

Get a juice with high nicotine so you get light headed where you don't want to smoke or vape anything. That helps me limit the amount that I vape and helps me not smoke a cigarette. But I use high nicotine on an Aspire Nautilus tank though, but rebuildables is too crazy for high nicotine. I think rebuildables are more likely to cause irritation because of all that thick vapor, which happens to me. But this is just my opinion though.

Oh you get irritation and sometimes phlegm when you vape?? Keep smoking and get cancer of your voice box, then the surgeons can cut out your voice box so we don't have to listen to your stupid fucking posts anymore. Problem solved!

boy this thread has gone down hill.. back on track please..
@krypted how ya doing today? :)
Better. Haven't had a cigarette since yesterday morning. Mainly sticking with my Vamo and mixed up some 18mg to use with my Protank. Currently trying the Aqua again with some RY4 max VG @12mg. I'm getting minimal irritation and can actually enjoy the vape again without coughing. If I run into problems again I'm going to switch to the Vamo w/18mg. I might order some Alice In Vapeland today.

Always remember, that it needs time. When i havent vaped for some time, like in the morning, my first vape is always very harsh, so to say.
After some time vaping, it gets back to normal. This is even much more intense, if you havent vape a much longer time, like u did.
Had similar problems with the Plume Veil RDA 26650 Clone. The atomizer, the build (How far(near) to airholes), Nic level (18MG Clearos, 3MG RDA is my sweet spot), VG/PG/H20, mod, ect. this are all factors that will cause different results.
Like always in vaping: Trial and Error is the only way to find your sweet spot, since every body reacts different.
Glad you found your way!

I'm back to using the Vamo. I was drinking coffee while using the aqua and I think the heat relaxed my throat allowing to vape without coughing. Once I finished my coffee the aqua was too much again. The Vamo is getting more enjoyable but the taste from the silica sucks. Oh well, it's working and that's what matters. I didn't buy a pack of cigarettes today which is a win. Hopefully I can get back to my mech and RBA soon. The flavor and vapor is so much better with them compared to kanger coils.
