DIY regulated Box mod building

Hi all,

Looking at the forum there seems to be a lot of people in the Mech mod section talking about their DIY Builds but I'm not seeing anything in this section.

Do people DIY regulated mods at all and if not why not?

I'd have thought for many, the idea of building in an element of protection within their DIY Mods would be something that they would be very keen on?

It's still done. Generally the better mods are going to use an Evolv or YiHi board.

I was looking at the Evolv DNA 250 board this afternoon funnily enough. Just checked out the YiHi boards.

Very surprised on how much they cost. They don't generally offer more than some of the off the shelf £50 - £80 mod kits. You could potentially just strip out the circuitry from a mod that has the functionality you want and spend less than going for one of these. You will get a 'free' tank out of it that way too.

Im a bit 50/50 on them. Part of the fun for me would be to actually design the electronics myself. That's where I would get the real sense of achievement i think.

I've yet to see any PCB with docs from anyplace that does even remotely as well as the Yihi, let alone Evolv.

I know varitube has a sale on the older joystick module of about $32 - I been considering ordering one or two and letting a buddy go apeshit-crazy with his new 3d-printer.. A single-cell Yihi squonk would be nice to have - design it right, and minimal change for dual.

There doesn't seem to be much in the way of choice, and from what I saw in my searches earlier the Evolv and Yihi offerings did seem more comprehensive than the few alternatives.

I'd like to give designing the electronics myself rather than using someone elses PCB. Having said that I wouldn't mind getting a look at a circuit diagram for the Evolv 250 to see exactly how it works and whether the boards work on the same sort of lines as what I had in mind for current control etc.

dripp3d has some diy kits for dna 250. From what I can tell the curve boxes the front comes off and there aren't side panels. The battery is a lipo and the large kit comes with a 3 cell 2800 mAh lipo. That would be equal to 3 18650's

I quite like the idea of doing something like this. Perhaps sussing out how to utilise the original screen as a display and then using the original buttons to adjust the settings

self made DNA250C. poured a block of resin, machined it out and fit a lipo, DNA250C board and 30mm 510.

If you want to build a custom circuit these are the guys to go to.

They have free software to lay out your board and a low minimum buy in for printing the circuits. Have used them many times and they are awesome.

You will likely not be able to get a gameboy screen to work correctly unless you use an raspberry pi or the like and build the connector I have never done this with a gameboy but have with some old monochrome VT100 terminals for a nerd project. It did eventually burn up the beagle bone or whatever it was we were using. A gameboy might be more forgiving.

If you are planning on printing a custom circuit, prepare for plenty of cursing, throwing shit against a wall and wanting to throw yourself out of a window. Failing repeatedly gets old after a while and then you figure it out.
