Shinyitis

When you feel a compulsion to acquire a new and shiny gadget. Of course you don't need it, you already have lots and lots of gadgets. But you want something new and you want it in your hands now, to turn over and admire and fondle.
The term originated on the vaping forums. Vaping is the (sometimes obsessive) utilization of electronic cigarettes.

I guess shinyitis is better than GAS...it's certainly cheaper.

Marriage.
No matter how many times I argue that vaping is a hobby, my wife determines when and how I can enjoy my "hobby".

That isn't a cure it but more like a suppressant because it always is there.

That’s what I first thought; Then after 37 years and two kids, my first wife decided that another man and drugs and alcohol were her solution to dealing with life.

It’s absolutely amazing to me how somebody you can know that long and that well, can go left of center like that.

So my word of caution is, be ready for what seems like the impossible. Nothing is a guarantee. Nothing is ironclad.

I must be more addicted than I thought!! I just bought my third Mod!! THIS one doesn’t need replacement batteries!!

Buying mods doesn't mean you're addicted to vaping; it means you're serious about not going back to smoking. Backups for your backup's backup. it should always be easier to find something to vape, than run to the store for smokes. I have 20+ mods, after 4 1/2 yrs of vaping. Because I want to NEVER smoke again.

It shouldn’t take “20 Mods” to quit. At MOST, I could see having say seven. One for each day.

And even THAT seems excessive.

That's because you're new to this. You haven't had any days yet when two mods die. How many mods have you broken so far? Keep in mind that the average mod is not top quality. Many of them have a shorter life then we may think. Buttons break, wires break, contacts wear down, and lots of other things will happen. I've had mods die within a month and many have had them die in less time than that. On top of that, there is the threat that the gov't will clamp down very hard on the industry therefore making it very difficult and expensive to get mods. At the current prices, it makes sense to stockpile them to a degree. If one were to quit vaping, you can always sell them and recoup some cash.

In all these years I have only had one MOD break and that was due to ABUSE~! I dropped the fucking thing on the cement and exploded the battery door and although I was able to repair it for a while it did eventually fail completely. Replaced it but just one in over 4 years now.

I still have never experienced a mod breaking. Not even my SMOK stuff. I guess if you take care of your stuff, it'll lasts a while.

Yes, like with PC's most issues are the component behind the keyboard or failure to RTFM. I have read so many posts where a user decided to update the Firmware but there was NO Problem with it before and they Bricked it because they used the wrong Firmware. I am still using an RX200S I was told is garbage 4 years later and I dropped it so many times it really shouldn't work~!

I have my RX200 and RX200S. The only issue with mine is that the Goon 1.5 won't read but it works fine with all my other RDA's. I think the Goon has a too long 510 pin.

I've had 3 or 4 die; a couple for no apparent reason, a couple from dropping them, so bobnat is right. I can't tell you how many times i've heard "Yeah I was vaping and smoke free for x number of weeks/months, but then my mod/atty broke/I ran out of juice/other bullshit excuse so i went back to smoking." If one is SERIOUS about never smoking again, one MAKES SURE that one is well set for hardware... because this shit attracts 'shit happens" LIKE NOBODY'S FUCKING BUSINESS, and you can't just pick up the exact thing you like to vape, the same way you can pick up smokes in so many stores.

And no, I'm not "addicted" to vaping. I had the flu in Feb, didn't vape for nearly 2 wks, and that was fine, didn't even miss it. But once I started feeling better, I started thinking how nice it would be to smoke... AFTER 4 FUCKING YEARS WITHOUT SMOKING, because THAT addiction never fucking gives up. So I started vaping again, so that I NEVER SMOKE AGAIN.

Know what you're talking about, before you try tearing down others.

My response was not intended in the "You don't need more than 1 mod because they don't break" scenario. I fully agree with you. One needs to have a few devices in case 1 breaks, battery dies, coils/tank needs rewicking or even just to keep in the car or at work.

My previous reply was to @SteveS45 just to say that my mod didn't break and definitely not a response to the OP. I would never tell someone to keep just 1 mod for the same reasons you express.

I would like to apologise. I should have been more clear about that.

Well, I went back later and realized that my reply was actually to @Soupy1957, not so much you, and what bobnat said is right on the money, Soupy's new to this and has no idea what he's talking about, if he thinks 3 mods makes him addicted to vaping, or that 20 mods is too many -- some folks round here have A HUNDRED, and apparently live in a vape shop, to judge from their stocks of attys and ejuice. :D I might feel that that is excessive, but I guess they feel they need that much, so whatever floats their boats, right? :D

I've actually had probably better luck than a lot of others, with 3 or 4 that have died or become unreliable over 4 1/2 yrs; even my most-fave mods, my Minibooks, some don't find reliable at all, but I just love 'em. *shrug* One of mine that died for no apparent reason was a Kanger kbox mini, and others love those to pieces. *shrug*

Soupy expressed an opinion and no reason at all to be so freaking high and mighty to say her doesn't know what he is talking about. Stick to your low wattage so much PG I would gag 3 times as much flavoring and stop telling people what they think is wrong.

I also have a ton of juice and more mods than necessary. I keep them all all around the house and even at my work place. Personally, I can never use just 1 device. I use different nic strengths and therefore there are times when 3mg just doesn't do it so I would turn to my pod devices which have 35 or 50mg in them. 3 or 4 devices isn't many. There's definitely going to be a time when both mods have dead batteries.

Just last night I used 3 mods with dead batteries. Forgetting to charge a device happens, forgetting a device at home happens and its cases like these that can tempt you to just have '1 cigarette'. I know that when I'm out with friends I need to have a device with me. I'm social gatherings I'm always tempted to have a smoke especially since my friends smoke and vape as well (still trying to quit).

When I started vaping I had 2 devices but over time the collection starts to grow. There will always be that RDA or Mod that you 'need' to have FOMO and hype is responsible for quite a few of my setups and recently my pod collection and salt nicotine Eliquids.

This is why having a device with Pass Thru Charging is a must for a recent smoker who quit. Saved me so many times when all I had was my iStick TC40W and got stuck on site until 2AM or later. Driving home the battery dies so popped the 12V Mini USB charger in the accessory port and vaped all the way home. Vaped with it plugged into the USB on the PC or Laptop while I was closing out the Work Order and vaped in bed watching TV to hopefully fall asleep~! That same MOD I was told not to use the Pass Thru or the USB is still kicking and is my Back Up carry~! 4 Years later.

Pass through is a must have feature as well as on board charging. Most people including myself generally don't carry chargers when out and about or at work. In situations like these you only realise how important on board charging is. Carrying a power bank and a USB cable with is more convenient than carrying a 2 bay charger and looking for a plug point.

Shit I forgot all about my power banks~! When I first quit smoking I bought a 4 slot USB Charging Adapter for the accessory 12V port in my vehicle~! So I could charge more than one Mark Ten XL or Logic battery~!

I have one of these 10 000mAh capacity power banks. What I like about this power bank was that it could do 2A Charging. The capacity is quite good and if you use a single battery device, 10 000 mAh can get you a few charges.

I never use the car lighter to charge anything. Someone once told me that it doesn't provide a stable current or something like that.

"Connect a voltmeter to your ciggy lighter socket, and watch it while starting and running the car. It will be ~12.5V when the motor is off, up to 14.5V while just started, and once the battery is topped off by the alternator the voltage will drop to around 12.5-13.0V for warm running.

Also try turning your high beams and AC on to see what the voltages do. At worst case it will be as low as 11V and could drop lower as your battery approaches its end of service life."

No, what I need is a new wife.

Some days I wish my wife was like a rebuildable RDA. Rip out the old coils and cotton, replace with more attractive features, put on a new drip tip and happy vapin! Unfortunately nobody has created a perfectly silent airflow tank with no spitback. :gaah:

I wasnt going to be the one to say it, but I agree. New wife.

Well, I'm very blessed; I've vaped the same flavor since 2014, I vape at very low wattage so batteries last a real good while, and my husband is so absolutely delighted that I quit smoking, he'd happily buy me a hundred more mods or whatever i wanted, if I keep vaping and not smoking. Since that is exactly what I plan to do, he and I are on the same exact page, I buy whatever I feel I need, or even just want, within reason (it probably helps a lot that I'm a real tightwad that makes pennies SQUEAL I pinch 'em so hard!). So I have about 23 or 24 mods, quite a few atties (though I really only use 1, my favorite Achilles), though I do try new ones from time to time. I stay stocked up on PG/VG/nicotine (got 3.5 liters of 100mg in the freezer!) and my usual flavors for my ADV strawberry & cream, and some others that I mix for my son, and everybody's happy. No way can I see that as "addicted to vaping", but rather "free of that goddamned life-sucking addiction to coffin nails!" 39 yrs of that shit, hopefully NEVER AGAIN. I do feel a smidge of temptation now and then... so I vape like a maniac till I forget I even thought about it. :D

I smoked Marlboro Reds for 40 years but I now vape multiple flavors even though I said I only wanted a Tobacco that tasted like a cigarette when I first quit. But after all this time you say it has been maybe you should finally get rid of that pack in your freezer. Like an alcoholic keeping a bottle of Scotch because it was 12 years old.................

Nah, at this point it's a conversation piece. And something i can flip off and laugh at, anytime I get a box of nic out of the freezer and see that old pack. It's not like I'm gonna smoke 4 yr old tobaccocicles.

My husband has a gift-bottle of Beam that his fellow Marines gave him when he left the Corps in 85 -- never been opened. It's got the Iwo Jima scene on the back. He'll keep that forever. But neither of us has had a drink in 26 yrs.

Got that right! Though when I did use tanks (KFL+'s), I always preferred the full-body plastic kind, called "M tanks", just because they're so much lighter than glass or steel (and I'm a terrible klutz, so glass is a really bad idea for me). Now of course I have the best of both worlds, with my Achilles -- it's titanium, light as a feather. :D The shisha strawberry might be *slightly* problematic in plastic tanks, though I never could really tell for sure about that... but now I don't have to worry about that, with the titanium.

I had a couple of the "pen-style" self-destruct; one of my Coolfire IVs has become completely unreliable, often misfiring or just turning itself off (though I have another CF4 that's apparently immortal, it's been dropped and beat to shit so many times, and keeps right on ticking!), that kbox mini died for no apparent reason, and a minibook that, after being dropped, the screen no longer worked, though it would still fire -- useless to me, if I can't adjust the wattage. Cromwell had a look at it, and it apparently couldn't be repaired, so I just bought another white Minibook, and then a lovely generous lady around here PIF'ed me another white one.... which is great, since the white minibooks are my favorite mods bar none.

Another factor with electronic mods is that electronics do have a very strict lifespan. It's hard to believe that I've been vaping for 4 1/2 yrs, but time just flies by -- I try to buy at least one new mod about every 6-12 months, just to stay current, and maintain a fully functional "stable" of mods. No way is that addiction, nor even really "shinyitis"... it's just sensible for someone who wants to remain a vaping non-smoker. I always search high and low for the very best prices, too. Tightwad, after all. ;)

I just thought that with so many people who vape getting vapers tongue, vaping the same flavor constantly and for so long you probably have the worst case of it ever. Maybe that is why you need to use double or triple the normal amount of flavorings.

No, I think I need so much flavoring because of my ultra-low wattage. I do in fact sometimes taste very little from my vape, but I don't let it distress me. I go eat a cookie or a handful of chips, or drink some water and then some tea, and it refreshes the flavor for me, as well as the TH, which I still like, if a lot less than I did at first. Also I think my tastebuds are just more radically impaired than those of most long-term smokers -- just one of those individual things. My sense of smell wasn't impaired much at all, even when I smoked, though it has improved (unfortunately) since I quit.

I had my Alien shit out on me yesterday. It was my most used mod. I think I've had it a year and a half.I dropped it twice on asphalt this weekend (Not the first time lol). I swapped out the batteries and it never turned back on. I miss it already. I'm definitely getting another or even couple more. It was a solid workhorse for me.

Yes, I do know how upsetting that can be. Had a buddy who was vaping and had quit for a while when I saw him smoking. I asked him WTF and his answer was WTF I don't care because of Blah, Blah Blah. Sucks but at least that will never be me.

Yeah even some of my friends quit and their reason was "I just needed/wanted to smoke". Nowadays with nicotine salts and pod devices, transitioning to vaping is easier than before but you also need the willingness to want to quit smoking cigarettes.
