Flavors For Starting DIY

This is my attempt of making a guide for picking your flavors when you start your DIY journey. This is merely a guide, you don't have to get every flavor listed, just meant to give a general idea of where to start. These are flavors I have found to be easy to work with and versatile, but it's just what I have personally found, hopefully other mixers who know more will chime in. Alright, let's jump into this, yeah?

Disclaimer: It does not take a genius to mix e juice, no matter what anyone says. If you can do basic figuring, you can make e-juice. This thread was an idea from @Squonk full credit to him. This is not a full discussion of each flavor listed, it is just a simple list.

Fruits:
FA Raspberry - This one tastes the closest to the real fruit IMO, while some like the INW version better, I find the INW version tastes closer to candy and don't always blend well with other fruits, so that's why the FA is here. If the FA version gives you problems with coughing and whatnot, go with INW.
The Peach Bros. (FA Peach and FA White Peach) - These two used together at a 2 peach to 1 white peach ratio will make the closest thing to eating the actual fruit. While some like FW Peach are more of a standalone, these play with others nicely. FA Peach is the sweetness of a the meat of the fruit, white peach is the slightly bitter outside layer, they work together to give you that feeling like your biting into a fresh peach.
The Blueberry Boys (TFA Wild Blueberry and FW Blueberry) - Blueberry is a difficult flavor to work with, anyone who works with these evil little blue things will tell ya the same. The TFA version is more of a natural blueberry while the FW version is more artificial, but still doesn't reach candy levels. I personally found FW is more of a standalone than other blueberries, but that is mainly because I feel it is too weak to truly work without something giving it a little more oomph. The TFA one is stronger, but not overbearing, and is slightly more sour (not enough to notice a real difference though.) Use them together at around 4% FW and 2% TFA as a start place, and you should get a decent blueberry base or standalone.
Bananas - I can't really suggest one, because the one people have said is the best I haven't tried yet. I like FA banana, though many say it's like licking monkey butthole and not exactly nice to work with, thus I won't suggest one, sorry.
The Strawberry Triplets (FA Juicy Strawberry INW Shisha Strawberry FA Strawberry) - These are the best pure strawberry flavors, no discussion. Juicy strawberry is slightly better than shisha, with it being damn near identical to eating a strawberry, it don't play with flavors as nicely as the others, but it don't want to fight others in the mix. Shisha strawberry is more versatile than juicy, so if you're wanting creams or whatever, than this is the one for you, it also is great as a standalone. Finally the poor malnourished younger sibling FA Strawberry, I find this little guy to be a tasty flavor, but not exactly a standalone, he constantly needs help from others to reach his full potential, but that's okay, he is still a staple in many people's flavor stashes.
The Mango Mistakes (FA Mango and TFA Mango) - The TFA version is often overshadowed by FA, but I find it is better, slightly sweeter, and generally more usable with other fruits. FA mango is a bit more tart IMO, but that is no reason to avoid this guy, he loves to play with creams and vanillas more than his cousin and provides a fantastic stage for recipes.
FA Fuji Apple - One of the best apples around, while INW Two Apples is indeed a better flavor, I don't find it as adaptive as fuji. Great in desserts, standalone, with other fruits, whatever your need, Fuji will get the job done. Rather strong, use at low %'s.

Creams Vanillas & Custards:
The Vanilla Custard Twins (Cap Vanilla Custard V1 & V2) - Without a doubt the best custard around. One of the two custards I can vape (personal tastes and issues) wonderful, tasty, and irreplaceable in a mixer's stash. While not as eggy as some other custards, there is still some there, it is however a vanilla custard, meaning that it is not a lemon style. V1 contains diketones, so if you are worried about those use V2. I find V2 not as good, but more versatile than V1 IMO.
FA Custard - The only other custard I can vape. More eggy than the vanilla custards, this is a true Italian-style lemon custard. Makes a great base for puddings and desserts, but not really a team player, so use him sparingly.
FA Fresh Cream - Among the best creams around, whether it's just to add a creamy note or perk up a recipe, this fella will probably be your go to. Works great with fruits and other creams without wanting to take over.
HS Cream - The closest damn thing to milk currently available that doesn't want to take over. Works great with cereals or whatever to give that elusive milky mouth feel.
FA Vienna Cream - A great flavor in general, though not as universal as FA Fresh, it still has it's place. I find it shines when you use it with vanillas and other creams. Requires a good airing out before use though.
Cap Vanilla Bean Ice Cream - Do you like vanilla ice cream? Then this is for you. While I personally like the TFA version better, many find it to be pure pepper, so use Cap instead. A true ice cream flavor, can be used with damn near anything that you want a cream and vanilla in, works great with fruits or by itself, this flavor can do a whole lot.
The Vanilla Trio (FA Vanilla Tahity, Vanilla Classic, & Vanilla Bourbon) - Indispensable in at least my recipes. Many prefer Classic the best, but I like tahity better. Classic is more artificial than tahity, but if you want like a vanilla cake juice or something, then you will want to use this one. Tahity is more geared towards fruits and creams than the others, but can be used in whatever, it is more of a "natural" vanilla than the others. Bourbon shines the brightest when it is with something like a cola, or other drink-based flavor.
TFA Vanilla Swirl - A fluffy vanilla, used mainly with creams and other vanillas to give a good little a slightly fuller mouth feel of vanilla, not as much of a shining star though.
TFA Bavarian Cream - A light yet somewhat "thick" cream. Used mainly to give a pleasant smoothness to desserts mainly, but also benefits with vanillas and other creams and custards. While it is fantastic in those regards, it is usually better to use another cream if fruit is the main focal point, but there are exceptions. Use in low to medium strengths, likes to overwhelm if used at high levels in complex recipes. Thoughts by me, added by @Mykreign

Drinks:
FA Cola - The best cola around, realistic and tasty. Can be used with many other flavors to give you that unique flavor that cola brings, standalone, or whatever you think it would go good in.
LB Root Beer - The only root beer that's worth fuckin' with. This is the only one I have found that works good by itself and doesn't want to take over the entire recipe if used in more than a tiny amount.
FA Mad Fruit - Red Bull in vape form, simple as that. While fine by itself, it'll pick up the slack in any fruity or citrus based juice you may have. Use in small %'s likes to take over at higher ones.
TFA Citrus Punch - Mtn Dew, nothing else to say.
FA Green Tea - Works great with damn near anything fruity, floral, or whatever. The only green tea, that tastes like green tea with nothing else.

Enhancers:
FA Jasmine - In my mind, the perfect floral note in any mix, a little pricey, but worth it if you want a good floral. Will work with citrus & fruits, teas, creams, and a lot of things you wouldn't figure.
FA Marshmallow - More of a sweetener than anything. At low amounts it will sweeten most mixes without taking away from the real star.
FA Meringue - Kinda fluffs and sweetens the mix. Really only works in creams and vanillas though, kinda situational.
Cap Super Sweet - What the name says. Mainly duplicates commercial e-juice, will do nice if you are coming from over sweet "premium" juices. More of a gunker than the rest of the sweeteners. Don't go above 2% or else it will mute your mix.
INW Cactus - I am only including this one because of what it can do to other flavors, it isn't a friendly flavor to get to know, it is that asshole you hung out with in high school and asked yourself why you two were friends. Smells a little strange, but don't let that deter you, this is a fantastic addition to citrus notes, will perk up any fruit it's with. Use in very low amounts, will enact a coup if you let it. If you don't want to fool with something this hostile, just avoid it.
FA Magic Mask - Reduces the acidic mouth feel of citrus flavors without changing the flavor. I have also noticed it will hide the smell of certain mixes in the bottle and on the exhale. Use in small amounts or it mutes your flavors.
FA Spearmint - The most violent of mint flavors. Sweeter than some mints, but a cool refreshing mint.
Koolada & FA Polar Blast - Adds a cooling effect without mint. Koolada gets a bitter taste after a bit for some reason. Use low doses.

So whatcha think? I do good? I left out tobaccos and certain other categories because I either don't use them or haven't used enough to fully test, if you have, please say something and I will add it. Let me know how I did.

Go here for abbreviations http://vapingunderground.com/threads/rps-master-list-of-diy-flavor-supplier-abbreviations.38743/

See post#20 below for more flavors.

Reminder: This list is currently unfinished and a little outdated, just a heads up.

Very helpful. I like Pur raspberry but it needs a bit of help, will try the FA with it. I have FW blueberry and FA bilberry. Hoping to get a nice BB lemonade out of them.

You do Good. I enjoyed Capella Blueberry, and not sure about your "no discussion" on the strawberries, TFA Strawberry Ripe for me :p But you do good!

What brand is LB? You might add a glossary of abbreviations for brand names, and mention TFA used to be TPA

FA bilberry is nice, does best at low level to support other blue berries, try at ~.5% with ~5% FW blueberry, bout where I can figure would be a decent start.

Many thanks. This is probably the most helpful and encouraging post I've come across in the entire forum section... other people kept telling me to stick to existing recipes even after I had already explicitly made it clear I want to do the opposite so now I have 33 bottles of flavorings just sitting there waiting to be opened because too many questions were left unanswered... I searched and searched, instead of starting with some actual DIY mixing.

How does the CAP raspberry compare to the FA/others? Reason I ask is I have both it and the FA raspberry. Also, if someone could chime in about coconut flavorings from CAP/TFA/FA/others and how to combine them together to make a deeper, more complex coconut it would be nice... I mean, tell me more on how to go about balancing stuff, please.

Thank you.
I personally find cap raspberry slightly more bitter than INW or FA, and a little more artificial than FA, but that's just me, it is also weaker than either. I can't really speak with coconut, cause the only one I have is FA coconut, and I don't use it to add coconut taste. It adds a smoother slightly buttery mouthfeel to creams at low doses. I hear it has better results with custards, but I don't really play with custards very much, sorry. At ~.5% FA coconut is usually where I like to stay. As for balancing, it's really just trial and error, at least to me. I have gone through hundreds of mls of ingredients trying to figure things out. Sorry that ain't much help, but it's the best way I know of doing it.

Thanks again. I don't intend to play with custards, either... was thinking more along the lines of tropical fruit mixes and or some cream based stuff so no bakery goods for me for now, simply because I figured I need to start somewhere. According to HIC's notes about flavorings, the FA coconut is weak and it includes the whole raw/unrefined coconut so then I started thinking maybe it lends itself well for creating just that subtle hint of added realism by, at very low percent, blending it in with other, stronger as well as more refined coconut flavorings. I guess I'll have to try at .5% and see how that pans out, as I also have the CAP and the TFA to throw on top of it.

It's about time this thread was created. This needs to be stickied. I would also add,
TFA cheesecake graham crust
TFA Bavarian cream
TFA Cotton candy/EM
CAP sweet strawberry
FA cookie
INW biscuit
TFA grahan cracker (clear)
TFA dragonfruit

I feel like we need a grape in there too. The one I use the most is TFA grape candy

I forgot about Bavarian cream will add soon. I thought about dragon fruit, but I didn't really figure many people would want to use that one if they weren't at least familiar with mixing, so I didn't add it. Guess it's time to add a candy and dessert section. Didn't add grape, cause there's not any pure grape that isn't shit or isn't too situational.

I agree about the grape. I haven't had one that wowed me but I do use a lot of the grape candy. On ELR, TFA grape juice is the most used grape flavor.

TFA Ripe Strawberry might want to be added as well. I'd say that's the most used flavor and top selling for flavor vendors.

Reached max limit with typing, list continued here:

Fruit cont:
TFA Dragon Fruit - I've been arguing with myself whether or not to put this here, but decided it was too good not to. If you are looking for exotic fruit flavors, then this is essential in your arsenal. Most realistic dragon fruit flavor I have found, the others are kinda off-tasting, at least to me. At low doses you get a sweet slightly strange flavor that is better used to perk up other flavors like fruit. At medium levels is where it really shines, you will get this sweet, flavorful, slightly bitter(not overly so) exotic fruit, I can't really describe it, you will have to have eaten the fruit or try the flavor to know for yourself. Can be used in damn near anything you will be surprised to find what it will work in. I'd avoid at high doses myself, it likes to mute itself and becomes unbearably bitter at high strengths.
TFA Strawberry Ripe - After some testing(and some goading from other members) I'm adding this one to the list. A tasty strawberry, slightly sweeter than INW shisha, but a little more artificial tasting than FA strawberry(not very noticeable though.) I personally don't find it as good as the other strawberries on this list, but that's just me. It does seem to have a special quality to it that I can't really describe, it is weaker than the others so take that into account. Ever since I got ahold FA juicy, it doesn't really get any real use nowadays. Use in medium amounts for best results. Credits to @Pegleg Meg & @Mykreign for making me get off my ass and test it a little bit.
INW Raspberry Concentrate - More candy-like than FA raspberry, but less bitter at higher doses. If you are wanting a sweeter fruit, or raspberry cream like deal, than this is the one you will want. At low doses it is definitely noticeable, but ~2-3% is where it is best IMO. Does nicely with a large amount of stuff, but is slightly more limited then the FA version, but not enough to just kick this one to the curb. Don't overdo it, has a serious chemical bite at high percents.
Candy & Desserts:
TFA Cheesecake Graham Crust - This is a good all in one kind of flavor. Unlike other cheesecakes, this one contains a graham crust. It can be swayed to either more of a cheesecake filling with the use of other cheesecake flavors (cap new york cheesecake) or it can be used to make a milky flavor with the addition of bavarian cream. If you want more crust flavor, add TFA graham cracker (clear), INW biscuit or FA cookie. Added by @Mykreign
FA Cookie - A flavor true to it's name. A slightly sweet baked cookie. This one is generally used with other flavors to get a desired cookie, crust or just a bakery note. For example, the majority of custard recipes contain FA cookie for its sweet, bold and smooth flavor addition. Having said that, its a little dry by itself. If you're looking for a straight cookie flavor, I'd point you to CAP sugar cookie. Added by @Mykreign
INW Biscuit - A buttery, vanilla wafer flavor. This one is smoother/softer flavor whereas FA Cookie adds texture or a crunch. I use INW Biscuit for pie crusts, waffle cones, or cookie recipes. Try this with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream! Added by @Mykreign
TFA Graham Cracker (Clear) - This is more of a back note or flavor enhancer. Use this if you want to add a crisp nutty graham flavor. I also get a slight cinnimon flavor in this one. Again, like FA cookie & INW biscuit, this is used in pie crusts, custards or ice cream vapes. They're all similar, each has it's own uses and they're often mixed together. Added by @Mykreign
TFA Peanut Butter - Rich, flavorful, and spot on peanut butter flavor. Not as creamy as Capella's version, but doesn't have that slight chemical taste that I found Cap to have. Works great with creams, vanillas, and some flavors like FA cookie and INW biscuit, but can be a tad overbearing on it's own, but add some cream to it and it's fine. It does have diketones, so if those bother you, use the DX variant, but to me the DX version tastes like cardboard, but adding a touch of hazelnut might fix that. Don't use it if you plan on switching flavors afterwards, it is a serious coil clinger, especially in a tank.

not sure about your "no discussion" on the strawberries, TFA Strawberry Ripe for me

I was thinking on that when I made the list, but at least to me, FA Juicy Strawberry covers all I needed Ripe for in my recipes, and at a slightly lower percentage. I will need to mix up some Ripe in some tester batches to jog my memory though.

I agree that some newer flavors have more potential than ripe strawberry, but I was thinking, since this is for new people, a lot of them will look for proven recipes instead of making their own. If they do that, they'll see a ton of ripe strawberry.

FA Passion (passionfruit) needs some <3

That flavor is too much of a dick to find the proper place in a mix, while I agree it is a nice flavor, I don't really feel it's easy enough to work with for people just starting. Goes nice with mango though.

I just re-read @HeadInClouds notes to be sure I wasn't mistaken this time. His description appears to suggest it goes well together with a lot of stuff.

Thanks for this!
I just made my first ever juice today and knew I needed to get the Capella vanilla custard V1 instead of V2. when I read it is better in more than one post. I am liking the flavor better then the ADV I was buying because It has no added sweetener. I am sure it can get better with some more steep time though.

8% Capella Vanilla custard and 2% Flavor Apprentice Dulce de leche with a few hours of force steep.

I am so glad to get rid of that unnecessary sweet taste!

Greetings! I'm in the process of trying to decide which flavors to get on my very first order!! I don't have a bunch of money to invest, and I have to grab up a scale, some pipettes, and some vg and pg. So there's not a lot left in the budget for flavors on the first go round. So, I need some suggestions for what types of things to get for mixing with very little stock. I typically like a pretty sweet vape so I'm going to grab up some cap super sweet. And I'm pretty sure I'm going to definitely pick up some vanilla bean ice cream. But I need some help on 2-3 other flavors that work well as stand-alone and/or mix well with each other. I love a good banana as well as most of the other sweeter fruits. Buttery flavors like caramels and butterscotch are also right up my alley. I have yet to try a pre-made chocolate that I like. So, I think I'll save that for later. But, now I'm rambling ...

Do you have any recipes that you’ve checked out in mind? That’s usually the easiest way to start. Pick a recipe and get those flavors. 10ml of flavor(except Flavorah) usually runs under $3. Half that for TFA. It can be frustrating to try to do your own recipes from the start....I know it frustrated me! Find a recipe here, on All the Flavors or anywhere you want and start there.

Or....do one shots. They’re already mixed recipes....ready to mix up. Easy peasy.

The majority of the recipes I see are either a large amount of different flavorings, or things that do sound appetizing to me. That's kind of why I'm looking for stand alone flavors to start with.
