Pod vs Box Mod Flavor

So ive been vaping for a few months on pod devices, and decided to grab a couple sub ohm mods. First the Smok Stik Prince, then a Geek Vape Aegis Mini.

After trying 5 different juices and a few different coils, i cant get any real flavor out of either device. On the Aegis ive tried a variety of different wattage and airflow settings to no avail, even going beyond the recommended range for each coil just to see if it helps.

Yet with Smok Infinix i get very defined flavor from each juice. I even grabbed a couple 6mg juices in flavors that i have in nic salt for my Infinix just to compare. Its night and day. $20 pod is far better flavor.

From the box mods im just getting sweetness, i cant even tell the flavors apart from each other.

I realize these smaller internal battery mods are not gonna run like higher end rta setups but i was expecting alot more.

Thanks for any help.

Please let me say "hm, intersting". I will likely come back with a/ fuller thought/s on this matter of yours. For now it is simply an interesting quandary which vexes and gives rise to pondering a spell. I have some speculations at the moment but don't feel they're up to par to write out. Sounds like you gave it a "good try" and went through the "troubleshooting" process. Ergo, that limits speculations and even then limits their bounds. So, ponder I shall. :)

Sub ohm tanks might be the issue. You could try a higher resistance MTL tank. Like aspire nautNaut

I thought about trying an mtl tank but it seems like there must be some other issue here. So many vapers out there with sub-ohm devices enjoying a variety of juices.

Is anyone else alternating between pod systems and box mods throughout the day and having a better experience? Im not asking for insane flavor...just some flavor would be nice.

Welcome @sheperd80 and I hope you enjoy your stay~!

I have found over the years the key to getting good flavor is to find the correct wattage for the coils you are using. Try lowering the wattage because if you overheat the e-Liquid you will not get a good taste. Think of a steak and if you make it well done it is not as delicious as Medium rare. Good Luck

Edit: I run most coils at 25% of what is recommended and find that to the Sweet Spot.

I am using RDAs, no tanks for me here. Not tried any of the nicotine salt juices, nor any of the pod systems. I'm using a couple mechs and a semi-mech. (The Eleaf Pico Squeeze has a switch-fet fuse, not a full mech but still not quite a regulated mod either.)

I sub ohm at a range of 0.30 to 0.50 and get some nice flavor & clouds. Using max vg juice, got an unflavored base and some I add a bit of TFA Peppermint flavoring. One big reason I got away from using tanks is because for me, tanks didn't offer flavor. Knew I was vaping from the very modest vapor once in a while but tanks just stopped "cutting it" for me. There's even moderation in moderation and they were just too damn moderated. :)

So I use RDAs and like doing something termed restricted direct lung hitting. Usual for direct lung is full open airflow. To me that doesn't feel like it "draws" right so I turn the airflow closed to create tighter draw. No, I'm not doing mouth to lung save for the vapor does pass through my mouth, kind of has to - to get into the throat. This feels more like you're drawing on a cigarette, imho. Then of course I take fits where I toss the air full open just because. :) ;) :p

My thinking on your problem here, you need to get away from tanks. Try some RDAs. There's plenty now that are under $20 but still authentic. Plenty too that are under $10 and if clones good enough you're not noticing much difference. If you can build for a tank, building for an RDA is a snap. You just got exposed positive and ground terminals, slap a coil twixt them, wick, vape.

Ok I'll play with wattage and airflow settings a bit more and see if i can find a sweet spot. It seems strange to me though...

I totally get that an RDA setup is likely to give better flavor once youve figured out how to build for the results you want. But it seems like i should be able to get atleast SOME flavor out of these tank style devices. Even if i dial in the aegis to get better flavor, that means a non adjustable device like the smok stik is just useless?? Do people only care about blowing giant clouds??

As an example, Hawaiian POG is a pretty distinct flavor through my pod systems, yet i cant distinguish it from berry bomb or reds apple in these mods.

Thanks for the suggestions ill let u guys know if i have any luck.

I will never understand the thinking behind telling a New Vaper they need to use an RDA/RBA/RDTA I have a few and I can get good flavor out of prebuilt coils. Although I can build and have all the tools, plus many types of wire, even some pre-wound coils with exotic metals/builds I would rather be vaping then building a deck and wicking the cotton. Just my opinion you know................... Good Luck

Yeah i really dont wanna go down that road and start building stuff. Vaping is already a rabbit hole on its own with the myriad devices, accessories, juices, etc.

I just want a mod that sits in my truck that i can get a nice big tasty rip from once in awhile.

Yeah eventually you might want to try your hand at winding coils and building decks but for new Vapers to be told they should start building I honestly think it might cause more issues. Just look at all threads new builders start about dry hits, metal tastes and leaking. My RDA/RBA/RDTA's all sit on a shelf for when I feel like screwing around but I would rather be vaping.

Fact: You can also buy coils that are already built for relatively cheap as well.

All you need to do then is learn to turn a/ screw/s, put wire in under or behind the screw/s, turn it back the opposing way to tighten the screw/s. You can then put cotton through the coil. You can use tweezers to help do that if you need the help. The most arduous part? You need to pulse a coil to ensure it heats evenly. If it does not fiddle with it a little using tweezers, pulse again. You do this maybe 2 to 4 times and more often than not your coil heats evenly.

I have some of already made up coils last a month or more after I put them on a deck. If I switch flavors all it takes is swapping out the cotton or rayon wick, pull it out and pulse the coil to burn off the old flavor. Let the coil cool a minute or two put fresh wick in. Vape on. Learning to & building coils does not need to be difficult or bothersome. Seeing it described as such seems to me to insult the intellect of new vapers.

. Just my opinion you know...................

I could eliminate the need to swap out wicks too. All I need to do is use Ready-X wick. It is kiln treated ceramic, fired up to at least 1,200 degrees F. Cleaning for a new flavor then is simple as pulsing the coil with wick in it, burn/heat out all the old juice, keep on vaping and let the new juice come on.

Yes, I know that and posted that I have plenty of them. I just choose to be vaping and not fiddling around with building decks. When I am bored I might screw around building one of the RDA/RBA/RDTA/RTA's I have but like I said I'd Rather Be Vaping. Some of the coils I see advertised cost as much as the ones I screw in and even though I can wind them for pennies I don't. This though has nothing to do with telling a NEW Vaper to start building coils or decks.

My apologies too. I was off in some weird place mentally when I read your comment at that time. Think I may have been looking at some "Funny Papers" (mainstream political media) right beforehand. Took your comment and opinion out of hm, relevance & context. Got a bit uppity. "Awe, that so and so, ..." *shaking my head* Have to love how the Internet and Web make it so easy to trip over our base selves.

I ought to have seen a few things in reading your posts.

1. You like me were stating an opinion. I find myself trying to avoid arguing opinions. There is just no reason to do that. For one thing it leads to the slippery slope of subjectivity which has no winners, only all losers.

2. At times I can agree, just want to vape. Difficult to disagree when you can find yourself in the other person's shoes. Gee, I must have been doing it on purpose then. Again, I probably should have stopped once I realized number 1 above.

3. My posting was that of nearly being a prick. I'm not like that normally, or try to not be, and try very expressly & deliberately. Already seen way too many pricks in life to understand such bad actors in life often merit nothing more than kicked in the balls.

4. Watching the news is no good t'all for many of us any more. The negativity screws up our senses of decent thinking and clouds it with knee jerk emotionalism. We forget ourselves, forget we're the kind which needs to self censor but in a good and constructive manner. If we don't well, we lob out grenades instead of party foods and good cheer during the holiday season/s.

So all in I do humbly and sincerely apologize. Can not promise for sure I won't let it happen again. I'm human too, some days I have to remember the other humans. Will promise though I will do my best to see it doesn't occur again.

Merry Christmas to you and yours. Hope y'all have a good 'un, your way. :)

No apology necessary but I will say it is greatly appreciated. Not many are man enough to say...... Oh shit man, I am sorry~!

Merry Christmas to you also and a Happy, Healthy, Prosperous New Year~!

Do you guys think a higher resistance and higher wattage tank would offer any improvement?

Currently using Cerberus at 0.3 ohms 30-40 watts, and TFV12 at 0.2 ohms 40-60 watts.

Considering something like Aspire Cleito Pro at 0.5 ohms 60-80 watts.

Its either that or grab an MTL tank and keep vaping nic salts but that seems pointless with my already satisfied pod collection.

My opinion is you should try it yourself and make the decision on your own. That has worked for me because you know what we say right? Vaping and Taste is Subjective~! I was using a Nautilus Mini tank for years but lately it is nothing but high wattage and TC for me. Vape On Safely~!

Success! I picked up a Cleito Pro and some new juice today and its got some great flavor. I dont love the juice i grabbed but thats ok, i can clearly taste the different flavors in it. I put the 0.5 ohm coil in and have been playing with wattage. Doesnt seem to matter how i set the airflow or wattage, flavor is strong no matter what.

Thanks for all the help.

Not many are man enough to say...... Oh shit man, I am sorry~!

I'm human and do not fear admitting mistakes. Rather admit them, own up, learn from them and move forward than doing otherwise. Obviously did misread what I read. Saw that and thought it better to own it and in so doing an apology was warranted and merited. Glad to share the void with the finest people. Life is ever so short. Peace I try to embody for that is the change I want to see in the world.

"Be the change you seek affecting in the world." -- Socrates as well as Buddha, Confucius & I'm sure quite a few other wise Masters

Given that course of thinking apologies & gratitudes are the least things I might offer.

Couldn't agree with you more on this. Trying to get into an RDA when I was just starting out would've been overwhelming. I had NO idea what I was doing, but I knew I wanted to stop smoking. Picking up a decent tank and decent mod was about all I could figure out and even that was tough. Once I realized I liked vaping then I started getting into RDA and RTA and Mech Mods and all this stuff. Right now I am running a Profile Mesh RDA on my Recurve Squonk Mod. When I started it was on a Sigeli 30w mod with an aspire Triton or something like that. I've come a long way, but glad I started where I did.

* big old belated friendly hug * Indeed and I hope you & yours did have a good Christmas. Wife & me had a good Christmas / Yule. Seems every year to be less about gifts than just being with family. :) I'm Peter Pan. This isn't right. I don't grow up. *chuckles* I should be asking for lots more gifts & running off to chase Hook. Bah, guess we all lose our illusions. Oh well, life she'll be what she'll be. :)

imo this is what usually happens when buying a kit. The mod, or the tank, or both, is lacking.

Thinking of the 2 mods and 2 DTL tanks separately instead of each setup on it's own as kitted.....
With the stick, It's all about the coil because there's no wattage control. Like what one of the compatible coils produce or your kinda stuck.
With the Mini, it's only 2200Mah and that's not enough, IMO, for a sub ohm tank. Could get you stranded without power.

That leaves the 2 tanks. Both smok coil compatible. I'm not recommending smok coils here, just commenting on what I don't know. It's been quite a while since I've used any smok coils and they've came out with some since. Maybe a mesh coil would be good, IDK. Neither of those tanks rate high for flavor. smok actually came out with about 5 tanks with diff names in a bout 3 months last year, and I'm sure they all use the same coils.

Suggestion: For DTL, get a dual 18650 regulated mod (only, no kit). You can get a good one for pretty cheap if you have a small budget. You can use the Mini for size convenience, when you know you won't be away from the dual batt long enough to run outa power, or when your charging the batteries. You'd also still have the stick as a back up, everyone needs backup(s), just in case.
Spend some money on a sub ohm tank known for having the best flavor. Horizontech Falcon is one. Coils may cost a little more but, they last longer and the QC is better than smok. From what I've seen there's a group of about 3 or so sub ohm's that rate best for flavor.
