That makes more sense, lol

I wasn't going to argue with you, but I didn't see you in the thread I'd responded to and couldn't figure it out

Thanks- I thought I'd lost my mind! Like maybe I was gonna post to him, but forgot. Didn't know he had 2 threads on the same topic.

I wish my husband would quit, too. The only time he's been willing to vape was when we were on vacation and driving a rental car for a week.

I did manage to actually force someone into vaping once, but I'm not proud of it. I feel great that she doesn't smoke any more, but I hate how it came about. My half sister is 8 years younger than me (she's almost 56) and has had COPD since her mid-40s. Her dad died of emphysema at 59. She was living with us and dependent on me and I just absolutely refused to buy cigarettes for her after about six months talking to her about it.

She also wouldn't drink anything but Pepsi and coffee loaded up with cream and sugar. Stayed dehydrated all the time. We fussed about that, too, and she didn't listen until she had a heart attack caused by low blood volume. After that happened she started drinking some water.

I don't take great care of myself, but dang, some things you just have to do. You should drink water, and you shouldn't smoke cigs when you already have COPD.
I totally agree with you- when our health is bad we need to take the reins and try to fix it if we can , but many are just too weak to change.
My hubby is a grown guy and he knows all the health risks- I cannot force him, I have given him all the help I can to quit those damn cigarettes, at least he vapes at work- only because it is too far and too cold to smoke outside in that area! Maybe he will change his tune when he has a health scare????
Makes me sick to think in 2007 as my non smoking, health nut sister lay dying from lung cancer in the hospital- I am outside smoking- horrible!

I'm just trying to figure out what a dual-battery pen that you could carry in a purse would look like. I'm totally confused.

Do sorta like the suggestion of the Berserker RTA, but then @AndriaD said that hers leaked all over the place. Mine doesn't leak at all, but the fact that one does and one doesn't tells me that either the devices aren't consistent, or they are particularly finicky about wicking. If that's the case, then I just had beginner's luck when I wicked mine.

Is there a Berserker pen?

ETA: There is, but it uses pre-made coils! Huh?

ETA2: Don't y'all love what Lucy said about us? Called us "highly experienced!" Hmm. I feel important now. Just stand back y'all. :p

I've heard that the later versions of the Berserkers are a good deal better than the original. At some point, I'll probably try one myself, but yeah, I've also heard that those original Berserkers are quite finicky about the wicking, and I think that's probably the root of my own problems with them. I got so used to wicking for a Kayfun, and now for my Achilles, I just can't be arsed with something so damn picky. :giggle: The Berserkers have that open bottom, like cartos, or Protanks -- I haven't liked that style SINCE I started using Kayfuns, because the damn things are so prone to leakage.

As for "dual battery pen"... uh... HUH? Anything that needs two batteries is a damn sight fatter than any pen I've ever seen, except maybe for those gi-normous markers that supermarkets use for their window signs. Something that fat, I wouldn't call a pen, I'd call it a "tube mod"... like so many mechs are, and the Sigelei Zmax I used to use.

LOL- there isn't- don't really understand what he wants?
If vaping was that complicated and expensive in my beginning- I would have gone back to cigarettes.
Some women and men don't like fiddling with a vape! Building coils, wicking, external batteries, chargers- No way!
Drop in coils and small mods like the eLeaf 30w and the GS Air or Nautilus tank or pod mods would be the way to start- with high nic.
i used the Joyetech eCabs for almost a year along with the I Taste VV/VW with kanger Evod tanks and my 20w eLeaf and gs air tanks.

Yes- he wants her to vape instead of smoke 2 packs a day- 1st mistake, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink.
There is no magic wand- you have to want to quit smoking and I was adult enough to walk in and buy my own vape gear. Sure wasn't a dual battery mod with an RTA and I still managed to quit my 30+ year cigarette love affair! A cig-a-like and 24 mgs nic juice , 18 mgs carts and will power.
I have tried everything to get my hubby to quit cigarettes in the 4 years I've quit. He vapes at work and smokes in his garage all night- ugh!
He never wanted to quit, but I did and vaping worked for me. My hubby would never ever build an RTA- he wants simple and likes his Penguin, but not enough to quit smoking cigarettes!

I think I've mentioned my puzzlement and frustration about my son; he switched to vaping like "piece of cake" when he first came back home to live... then started back smoking after about 9 months; he was a dual user for about a year, never did stop vaping, but he had a love affair with clove-flavored cigars. Then, back in the fall, he got a really bad cold, and it went STRAIGHT to his chest, as they usually do with smokers -- and with his life-long bronchitis, he finally realized how stupid it was for him to smoke AT ALL. Just before xmas, he finally stopped and went back to vape only. So far, so good; I'm keeping my fingers crossed for him!

As former hard core smoker - I have moments of shame like that - it shows the overwhelming nature of tobacco addiction

My husband still smokes - even after having a fairly major stroke and a few TIAs - he just does not want to quit - I've done everything but actually hit him over the head

I am keeping my fingers crossed for your son too and that he can stay strong against cigarettes- I know how you have been there for him- those damn cigarettes can have such a hold on people. I tried so many times to quit in my 30+ years of smoking- I had quit cold turkey for almost 2 years- then Bam, I was back to smoking- not until I found vaping, that at just over 4 years now I have been cigarette free. Not only cigarette free but truly repulsed by the smell of them- hate that smell now! Never experienced that when I quit cold turkey- still liked the smell of them.
At my Mom's funeral, I could smell the smokers- their clothes stunk of cigarettes. Yuck- I can't believe I smelled like that!
I hold out hope for my hubby- he dual uses, but I hope one day he will be able to kick cigarettes out of his life. I tell him how much I Hate the smell of his clothes, his car and his garage, still smokes though!

I think I might have been the very last smoker to quit, in my own family (other than my idiot son of course). At my mom's funeral, my cousin Kaye says "Woah, you smell GOOD, what is that, vanilla? Got some cookies hidden in your pockets?" :giggle: I told her no, it was probably my vape she smelled, strawberry and cream, and that, at that time, I'd been a non-smoker for a bit over 2 yrs. She grabbed me and hugged me like she wanted to break me in half! :giggle: After I'd excused myself a few times to go into the ladies' room for a vape, she said, hell with that, we're your family! Vape away! Then she wanted to talk about AA, since her son has been having some troubles with drinking, and she knows I've been sober for a long time... but that's another addiction entirely. :D

I was the only smoker in my immediate family. You can imagine their joy when I finally quit.

It is so great that you quit smoking! I am sure your family was over the moon when you quit!:bliss:
Some in my family just think I have traded one bad habit for another- but they are coming around- in the beginning, no vapers where I live and all the bad press had some of my family concerned. When I started vaping in 2014, it was still pretty new here. All are glad that I quit smoking- then I get the "when are you gonna quit vaping" questions- LOL! :blah:

I was talking to myself actually :)

I already have a BLUE ONE that I got during the holiday sales for 15. Turned out to be everything @WPMac said it was. So for 10 there was no way I could pass up grabbing a red kit too. :wait:
View attachment 128698
For the price point ($15-20 on avg sale and they are almost ALWAYS on sale) it is the best mod kit on the market imo. I got a black one a few months ago and wrote up a quick little review HERE . It's still one of my daily drivers.

And to try and stay on topic -
I think this past year has been good for the expansion of colors/styles in the mod industry. Lots of 'pretty' colors. Less, what I like to call, space-ship styles. More gender-neutral designs. It is still pretty lop-sided towards masculine ... but it seems to be getting better. I would be interested to see the numbers on male vapers vs. female vapers who use full fledged mods. Pods/Pens/AiO/ect ... have a lot to choose from on the 'not-so-masculine' front.

My thoughts on the issue

I think the problem arises from the fact that it takes a lot more investment to take a box and make it 'pretty' beyond colors. The more you add to it it the bigger it gets and the less feminine, and practical, it becomes. From a males perspective, I find it difficult to come up with ways to make a truly feminine box mod without just making it pink or purple ect ... I would be curious as to how feminine women would design their own mods given the opportunity.

Problem #2 - the majority of the hardware comes from the east ... which is still more of a 'man's world' then the west.

Problem #3 - Manufacturers are greedy SOBs. This goes back to the extra investment of trying to take a box and turn into not-a-box. And, purely speculation here, I would think that your avg western man is willing to spend more money on their vape hobby than your avg woman. Yes I know plenty of women who spend WAY to much on vape gear. But I know more men on that front.

When it comes down to it ... "Follow the money" is the bottom line for this whole discussion.

This conversation can get much more detailed and complex. Of course different men have different styles, but by and large the fashion market for men is much more restricted than it is for women. In my observation that means that women's different styles can be much more WILDLY divergent than men's. So designing vape hardware for women isn't just one thing or even just a few things. It's all over the place.

Even the women who have contributed most consistently to this thread over time are very different from each other. Some of us like "girly" pretty, some of us are more understated, and some of us are interested more in function. Within each of those "partitions" is yet more qualifying criteria, favorite colors, matching to other accessories and apparel, functional requirements, vaping styles, and certainly not the least important thing, the difference in the money we're each willing or able to spend.

Seems to me that it's an unenviable position for anyone to be in, to be responsible for creating "designs for women" in very nearly anything. I've said in the past that I almost wish our choices were more limited than they are. Frankly, I'd be grateful to just have the choice of ten different colors of cotton cable-knit sweaters, black, navy, or khaki chinos, and white or blue button-down oxford cloth shirts. I'd love to be able to pick up a pair of size 36/32 chinos and expect them to be consistent in fit, or a pair of size 9 loafers that are the same damn size as the last pair of size 9 loafers I bought.

Yes hard for some in my family to understand vaping- they were not smokers or they quit cigarettes the old fashion "cold turkey" way.
Then put all the crazy vaping news stories that they see, but I have not had a cigarette in over 4 years- so they are proud of me for that.
I am rarely sick any more and when I do get sick I am over much quicker without the hacking cough I would have for months-
Hey I am a grown woman who has grandkids and did my research on vaping before I tried it. Tough if they don't like it! Vaping works for me to keep me from cigarettes and that is a miracle in my book!

By all the vape gear I have I think my answer is obvious. Smoking is not an option.

I agree! When I had that month-long relapse to dual use, the gear I'd already acquired at that point (not NEARLY as much as I have now!!!), sat there on my kitchen counter reproaching me constantly: "You just gonna let us go to waste? After you spent good money on us? FOR SHAME!" Wasting money is a tightwad's worst nightmare! :giggle: Plus, if I'd kept on buying those damned expensive cigarettes, I'd never have amassed such a quantity of vape gear, because I wouldn't have been able to afford it! My husband and I agree completely: money spent on vape gear is WELL SPENT!

Very true -- and even those of us who LIKE "girly", may not choose that, in clothing or anything else. I've always envied the females I see with a ring on every finger and gold neckchains, bracelets, earrings, etc -- but it's just not me, not at all -- if I put on a ring (other than the anniversary ring I wear as a wedding ring), then it's just one... MAYBE 2. I don't like neck chains because they catch and pull my hair, and I'd end up catching it on something and break it... I can't wear bracelets because my wrists and hands are so very slender, they'd fall right off. Can't wear earrings because the holes in my lobes have grown closed.

Pretty much all that applies to my mods, too -- the ones with doodads hanging off them, very nice looking -- but for a klutz like me? Impractical as hell! My most-fave mods are those Minibooks -- small, but not so small they're fumbly for me (I have fairly large hands for a woman; the Picos are just too small)... but they come in black, white, and that GORGEOUS deep glittery red -- and the Aegis mods -- one of mine is the leopard print, so that's kinda nice.. and one has some red and green on all the black, so it was nice for xmas -- but those Aegis's are big, fairly heavy, and SOLID -- which is great for someone who manages to drop something about every 10 minutes. :D

Rounded and softer curves is a great start -

This goes back to the extra investment of trying to take a box and turn into not-a-box. And, purely speculation here, I would think that your avg western man is willing to spend more money on their vape hobby than your avg woman.

Women who like quality would spend more when it is out there - As a sometimes buyer of high end gear ($400 +) would happen more if the mods were more visually appealing and not marketed as masculine with manly themes. Custom squonk makers who create with softer look, often in pinks, purples, etc cannot keep up with the demand, making a $200 mod a $500 one

When it comes down to it ... "Follow the money" is the bottom line for this whole discussion.

I still think they are missing the mark - Jwraps et al would lose a lot of business if more mods were made to look less masculine

Look at it this way, there are many very frugal vapers in this thread that are willing to spend an additional $16 to add a feminine wrap for a $20 or $30 mod - that tells me the makers are being blind when following the money ;)

I totally agree with the majority of this.

I am definitely not saying that the mfgs are doing it right. I do believe they have an untapped resource they are looking out on by not catering more towards the feminine. I wholeheartedly believe that they should be doing more in the color/graphics department on their mods. They are missing out on an entire demographic of clients that may not even look at their product due to design color options.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's an issue of chance. Someone has to take the big step to open a line for women and see if it pays off. And that can be a big investment with no real understanding of the outcome. It will happen I'm sure.

How ya gonna pass up that mod and rda for 10 dollars? You can barely get a bottle of juice for that.
That is a super deal if you're an RDA user. :) I personally only use tanks. I just prefer the convenience of popping a coil out and a new one in without any hassle.

Hiya @WPMac and welcome! It's great to hear a male perspective on the matter and especially that you agree it's a very masculine weighted industry.

If I were designing my own mod...
  • Single 18650/20700/26650 compatibility
  • 22-23mm wide, Compact but not mini (The size of the Kanger Subox Mini or eLeaf iPower 80w are perfect)
  • Some sort of filigree/scroll laser etched design or corner points, maybe a flower in the corner. And/or a few blingy stones (Like the MVP Shines had)
  • Metallic, glittery, pearlescent automotive paint or like what they use on bowling balls
  • Colors, well anything but black, silver, fuchsia, red, blue, or gold. Aqua, pale purple, pale pink, peach, soft yellow, or seafoam green would be terrific.
  • I could care less about TC, just give me a basic simple 50 watt box.
  • Screen with digital clock would be a bonus.
  • Reverse battery protection
  • Soft, rounded edges like the subox mini, Sigelei Mini Book, eLeaf iPower, or even the Cool Fire 4
I do agree the more character you add to it the costlier it gets. But I'd be more than happy to pay $10 extra for what I want. Rather than to keep settling on the current mods wishing for more. And then paying the $10 extra for a Jwrap to dress them up.

Yes I know plenty of women who spend WAY to much on vape gear. But I know more men on that front.

When it comes down to it ... "Follow the money" is the bottom line for this whole discussion.

Wow- good question since we lady vapers are all so different, really hard to pinpoint what would be considered a Lady Like gear or gear that we ladies gravitate towards.
Yes just making Pink gear is not the answer- at least for me.
I do like stabwood mods along with purple and rainbow, I am really liking colorful patterns like my Vsticking VK530 YiHi in the White Deity, if that mod was just black I would not have bought it, I like interchangable doors so I can change the look or I just bought my 1st wrap in a pattern I like so I can customize my own gear.
I like dual battery mods that are good quality
I like the single battery squonk boxes and RDAs
All of my mods are regulated and I am not a TC vaper.
I have many rebuildable RTAs and RDTAs and I also use Sub Tanks with drop in coils.
Not too many tanks come in pretty colors so many of my tanks are black, SS or rainbow, so drip tips help with coordinating the mod colors.
I like quality gear and try to buy the best I can afford and wait for great sales on wanted gear.

This kit was PERFECT in size, color, shape, and function for me. The pearlesscence of the pale purple paint really made it a stand out. The ONLY complaint I had about it was the capacity of the tank. It only holds 2mls. I was filling this tank about 3 times a day.

Well, as Ron White puts it so well: "You can't fix stupid." People who don't see a difference in smoking and vaping... well they're just completely stupid, so why worry about their opinions?

Andria

I agree- never gonna change some their beliefs of vaping so why bother- LOL!
It works for me and that is all that matters! ME !!!!!!

Andria
Yes I have spent some money on vaping which is another reminder to my dedication- like you I wouldn't want to see my money wasted on stuff I didn't use. I spent good money on vaping and like you it is a reminder of the really wasteful amount of time , money and health on cigarettes- now there was a giant waste of money! I don't throw out vape gear when I am done with it like I did with cigarettes- I can come here and sell it or PIF.

Exactly!

Non-smokers, those who've never smoked, have NEVER understood smoking, the power it had over us, what we actually got from it, NOTHING. So it's no real surprise at all that they're equally clueless about vaping.

I love my aunt Betty dearly... but she's never been a habitual smoker (holding one at parties back in the 60s really doesn't count!), never been a habitual drinker (she likes to have one baby Miller with a slice of pizza), never even an over-eater -- like me, she suffers a lot of digestive issues and is concerned about the genetic legacy in our family for diabetes -- but she is very prone to saying things like, "well now that you've quit smoking, it's been over 4 yrs, why CAN'T you quit vaping? You said you didn't vape at all for nearly 2 wks when you had the flu..." And she's a person I wouldn't in a million years say anything rude or nasty to, she's just too nice, too loving, too wonderful of a person -- though totally clueless about addiction. So I have to just keep reiterating that if I quit vaping, I will ultimately go back to smoking... and that it probably wouldn't take very long for that to happen.

Fortunately, she's a very intelligent person, and I explained all the politics of the smoke nazis to her, back when I first started vaping and learned of it myself, and how it wasn't the nicotine that was so dangerous, but the smoke itself... so she doesn't give me all that ignorant crap about "we just don't know...etc etc etc" -- she totally gets "money talks". So it's not as difficult a conversation as it would be with someone who actually BELIEVES all the crap that the smoke nazis have been spewing.

It's simply a total failure to understand, and there really is no way to make people, those without any experience of addiction, understand. That's why I made that sign, about it being a simple choice between vaping or smoking.

I agree Andria-
no way to change anyone who was not a smoker understand the level of addiction to it or the difference between smoke and vapor and why I choose to vape. All the anti- vape stuff on the internet and news just gives them something to lord over me about. Doesn't matter what articles I have read and shown to them to debunk those anti vaping reports- I just end up saying "why do you really care if doesn't affect you". " I do this for me".
I have been vaping for just over 4 years and I am still here- no venting batteries, no health concerns and still not buying and smoking cigarettes!

All this stuff is why I just don't try to convince anyone of anything these days. I did put my foot down about the smoking with my half sister, but that was because she was expecting me to spend money buying cigarettes for her. If it's my money, I have the right to decide whether or not I'll provide it. Beyond that, people are gonna do and believe just what they will.

I have 7-1/2 years of this behind me. I'm not arguing with anyone about it. I am considerate around other people, so if vapor bothers them, I will not vape. Not treading on anyone's toes, so don't want to hear about it.

ETA: The two battery incidents I've had were because of things I did. First one, I didn't turn my mod off before putting it in my purse, and it fired and overheated both the battery and the tank. Apparently there was no overheat protection on that battery (it was an eGo). Second one, I tightened the cap on a mech mod too tight and the battery overheated. It was an eFest battery, and that was when I learned the importance of buying specific, genuine batteries. Things can happen, we have to be observant and careful.

:knock on wood:
I have never vented a battery, even when I was using the Bolt Mech's with cheapo Efests back in the day. I've never had a mod "explode"
I'll be at 7 years on 3/1/19... haven't had one single bout of sinusitis or bronchitis after 20 years of chronic issues. My lungs are healthier now than they've ever been.

On the F&F front... I was the only smoker in my immediate family. So there was no one to "turn". But I did get a lot of chatter and doubt for several years. Luckily, my family is one that will read and trust what I post about vaping. I only post/share positive info. It's actually kinda funny. My mother is a die hard "I hate smoking" person... you didn't dare smoke in her house or leave your cig butts in her drive/yard. At about 2 years in I was headed outside to vape on a 20 degree winter night. She stopped me and said "You know you can do that in here, I don't care, it smells good" Been vaping in her house and around the folks ever since. :D

I've been vaping since 2012 and never once vented. The funny thing is ... I don't 'practice battery safety'. I 'practice not being stupid'.
I consistently push my batteries beyond their max 'safe' CDR. Batteries don't just up and explode just because you pushed 25 amps through a 20 amp battery. They go thermal when they get to hot. You can kill a 20 amp battery with 10 amps under the wrong temperature conditions. And you can push a 20 amp battery to 25 amps under the right conditions. I know this is super faux-pas. And I preach battery safety to the general public. I would never suggest to anyone to go beyond the safety rating on a battery. But I am also a huge proponent of using your brain and thinking for yourself. Again ... 7 years of vaping and never a single cell mishap. I just retired a set of vct5's after many years of use.

Having said all of that ... sometimes shit happens. Forgetting to turn off your mod and tossing it in your pocket happens ... we are imperfect humans. Bad cells circulate. There's no avoiding that. You know ... things happen and I feel I am lucky to not have had a problem yet. But I am also proof that it doesn't take a rocket scientist to not melt your mod.

The bottom line is ... don't be an idiot!! And, outside of accidents, you'll be just fine.

I am lucky to not have had issues with friends and family coming down on me about vaping. The majority of them are just glad I quit smoking.

Actually I guess I've never had a battery to vent, either. I've had those two get hot, and one of them was swollen on the sides, so it was probably seconds away from venting.

The most important thing in my mind, after being as careful as you can in the first place, is to not underestimate the amount of time you have to react if something starts to happen. If I couldn't do anything else, I would not hesitate to throw a device away from myself and other people if it suddenly got hot. I'd rather have it mess up a carpet or a sink than to take my face or hand off.

My mom was that way about vaping, too -- if my stepfather whined about it, she'd say "It's NOT smoke, Phil, it's VAPOR, so stop whining! She's not bothering anyone!" :giggle: When it finally became clear that my mom was going to be almost entirely confined to her wheelchair, she needed to rearrange her closet so that the clothes she wore most often were more accessible -- a huge job, with the amount of clothes that woman had! So I spent about 5 hrs one Saturday with her in the walk-in closet, moving things around as she directed -- vaping all the while. No ventilation in that closet, and since it was kinda warm, I finally had to go get a fan just to get some air moving in there -- it wasn't because of vapor, because one of the greatest things about high-PG vaping is that it dissipates FAST, doesn't hang in the air. She didn't have a problem with my vaping in there at all -- in fact she was really glad I vaped, so I didn't have to keep running outdoors for a smoke; that huge job would have easily taken twice as long if there were a bunch of smoke-breaks!

I've also never vented a battery, though I *have* seen a few snafus with them -- one of my first iSticks had some battery problem, such that it would discharge itself FAST even when turned off -- so that one had to be recycled, with the internal battery. Had quite a few with dented-in positive poles, which finally had to be recycled, and of course quite a few that got dings in their wrappers, so I had to re-wrap them. My son had one that got really hot one day, and I told him that one shouldn't be used again, to recycle it. My first charger, a nitecore i4, got so hot one day I'm really surprised that the batteries didn't vent -- after it cooled, I tossed that sucker in the trash! Maybe it's just because I'm so aware of the potential danger and pay close attention to my batteries, that so far I've had no serious issues with them.
