So I have not shared with the community but my girl is health issues. Bunch of folks comming out to the house last few weeks, doctors, nurses, social worker, etc. Today a respiratory therapist. So the individual comes into my house. Sees our vapes on the coffee table and goes in to ( " I'm not tell you what to do but....). The procedes to lecture us on the dangers of vaping. Okay she probably believes the things she is saying are true. I know her intentions are good. But every thing she ( attempted ) to argue with us was incorrect. I tried not to be rude and it was difficult. When she brought up the kid who fractured his jaw and the guy who died in St. Pete. Both the most extreme cases of user error. I had to leave the room before I said something wrong. I tried to provide some facts but was too angry to get it out in a way she might understand. So I left. I really need to brush up on my vaping facts so I can make a accurate defense in favor of vaping. I know for us it is harm reduction. Most non smoking, anti-vaping people imo do not understand that concept.

Most people are persuaded by arguments from authority. As well they usually should be. It is not unreasonable to believe those with established expertise in a given domain of knowledge, over those lacking that, at least apparent expertise.

What do we do when those occupying the highest recognized seats of expertise within a certain domain of knowledge get it disastrously wrong? What do we when those occupying the highest recognized seats of expertise within a certain domain of knowledge get it disastrously wrong on purpose? And then use that recognized authority to innoculate themselves against critique? For money and power.

That's where we are.

The vast majority of people you run across my friend will believe whatever they saw on TV. Unless they have an overpowering preexisting self interest to the contrary, the very fact of it appearing on that screen is all the authority they need. They will consider it to be monumental arrogance for you or anybody else to think you know better than their authorities.

It's a rare person whose mind once made up on something like this, is not thereafter immune to any reasoned evidence that threatens their conclusion.

The dynamics bearing on this situation extend far beyond the topic of vaping.

What the heck does a mod blowing up in someones face have to do with respiratory therapy?

Vaping cannot be safer for someone than not vaping however it is a much safer alternative to smokiing.
And no studies seem to exist on the long term effects of vaping on respiratory issues.
So no 'expert' can conclusively say one way or the other besides saying it is somewhat safer to not vape than to vape.
But who knows vaping may help with some respiratory ailments, no one knows for certain yet.

Now a respiratory therapist commenting on the safety of oxygen concentrators would be proper.
They have lithium batteries in them too :)
And if you smoke while using one you could kinda blow yourself up.

She did her best to discredit vaping in general. Most will know not to smoke, vape, or play with matches while using oxygen. She just felt as though that including gross human error strengthened her anti-vape campaign (guessing).

Most of the Physical Therapists, Visiting Nurses and other Healthcare Personnel do not actually know about Oxygen even though it is their job. I have been maintaining my fathers Oxygen Generator and Portable tanks for years now. I actually went off on one who was trying to tell me how long a tank lasts because she was 100% incorrect and just kept going. So I went to the Website for the company and showed her that what I was telling her was the correct information and it is posted on the Manufacturers Website. Then I told her she needed to take a refresher course because apparently she will not listen to facts.

You responded better than I would have, I would have laughed in her face and proceeded to tell her how long I've been at this venture. I'd then ask her if she'd like to know some actual facts or wants to keep believing the fearmongering of the press. There'd likely be a few references to sheep and news thrown in for dramatic effect.

Here's what I would keep in my pocket:

If vaping is so unhealthy, why is it endorsed by Public Health England?
They are even encouraging pregnant women who smoke to vape instead. They tried to get approval for smokers to get prescriptions to pay for vaping even (bureaucrats said no, but they tried)

I read one food bank there is giving out vapes free to smokers

Ahh but many still do. You cannot protect stupid people from the effects of their own stupidity.

An analysis of deaths in four US states as a direct result of home oxygen fires caused by smoking was undertaken by Wendling et al. [13] in 2008. This analysis drew from a variety of data sources, and covered home oxygen fires in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Oklahoma (the Maine Group). Over an 8-year period (2000–2007), Wendling et al. [13] identified 38 deaths attributable to home oxygen fires caused by smoking. The Maine Group represents a population of 13 million (4.3% of the US total population in 2010), so extrapolation of the data gives a crude estimate for the whole of the USA.

Further US data that are available online from the Consumer Product Safety Commission's National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (2003–2006) shows that home medical oxygen was involved in an average of 1190 thermal burns seen annually in US emergency rooms. Uniquely, in the USA, details of home fires involving oxygen are recorded annually.
