Vandy Vape Berserker 1.5 MTL 24mm: Problems and Solutions

As a die-hard flavor-chaser, I've been rotating between three 22mm attys: Serpent Mini 22mm, Goblin Mini v3 and Oumier Whitebone Mini. All have performed admirably with the Oumier having the least condensation.
I recently acquire this atty based on rave reviews and was regretting it from day one :cuss2:

Problem #1: Draw too tight. Even at the largest setting, 1.8mm, I struggled to get a satisfying vape.
Solution: Remove air flow control (AFC) ring. Looks ugly, but now all the holes are drawing air in. It is Ok, but it is still not enough to get an airy MTL draw.

Problem #2: Dry hits. Wicking specifications are unforgiving.
Solution: Precisely keep wicks barely touching end of well and ensure wick is properly thinned out as many have demonstrated.

Problem #3: So-so flavor. An inner diameter (ID) of 2.5mm is typical and pales in comparison to any of the classic attys I've been rotating.
Solution: Maximize micro coil. A 26ga, 3.0mm ID with 8 wraps, about 1.1 ohms, generated excellent results - both in flavor and vapor volume. Unfortunately, 3.0mm is the maximum clearance. Using 24ga will invite a short.

Problem #4: Heat. The default drip tip with heatsink can easily come in contact with lips and mouth.
Solution: Use the supplied delrin drip tip (black, one piece) or your own drip tip.

Having sorted all the problems out, I now thoroughly enjoy this atty. A BIG PLUS is it is apparently leak-proof :)

However, If I knew all these issues in advance, I wouldn't have bought this atty.

Buyer Beware!

Problem #5: Cannot disassemble deck for cleaning. Toxic acrolein and aldehydes (aka 'gunk') that accumulate around peek insulator, gold-plated housing and air intakes cannot be cleaned directly. Only the 510 pin can be unscrewed and cleaned. IMHO, this is a fatal flaw.
Solution: Unscrew pin, soak deck and thoroughly rinse deck every time coil is changed; if you chain-vape custards and/ or pastries, this can mean weekly (or even daily).

Problem #6: Juice contamination. Toxic acrolein and aldehydes (aka 'gunk') accumulate on coil and contaminates e-juice after consuming 10ml-20ml (faster with coffee, chocolate and complex pastry juices). Flavor is radically degraded with the contaminants. Unlike old-school (leaky) tanks that isolate gunk in a pool around bottom air intake (which can be blown out), contaminants dissolve into fresh e-juice refills.
Solution: Thorough and frequent cleaning (see Problem #5)

Hardware mod (Vandy Vape Berserker 1.5 MTL 24mm): Drilled aperture.

Now MTL draw is more relaxed and flavor has improved significantly. The PEEK insulator assembly can be disassembled by unscrewing the gold-plated 510 screw and its housing underneath.

Problem: Vandy Vape Berserker MTL RTA v1.5
Solution: Steam Crave Glaz Mini MTL RTA

Boy, that was easy now, wasn't it?

I'm not trying to hijack this thread but can you tell me more about this Steam Crave? I'm looking for a rebuildable but heard that that the draw of the berserker is tight. I like a loose MTL draw. I'm trying to buy stuff before May 11, 2020.

I've seen a lot of reviews for this. One thing is certain... Glaz Mini MTL is way tighter than the Berserker. You could try a Siren v2, it's pretty adaptable.

I ended up with the Berserker 1.5 mini and love it. No problems at all. It gives me a perfect MTL hit like I want.

I've had no problems with Berserkers or Berserker mini's. No leaks, fine flavor and fairly inexpensive.
I don't see them much available for sale. They seem to have been replaced with the next generation, which I've not heard much about.

Got the Berserker Mini v2 and it performs well, with several airflow configuration options. Definitely recommended addition to MTL collection as a non highend device.
