I keep hearing about this chimney thing but i can't wrap my head around how that works.
You're meant to wrap the sick not your head Jeremy. You're doing it wrong lol. Man, so many coil types. I've spent ages till I perfected a dragon coil. I must admit it chucked the vaper out. But I still didn't offer anything more than a standard dual coil. I think if someone's looking for a good flavourful hit then use a smaller tank with air flow control. That should just about cover all bases. Of course, I could be totally wrong. I'm open to correction. That's how I've learn to much

And that doesn't touch the chimney top cap?
I can't thread it down all the way, but I compensate with a tighter cotton wick pack to keep it from flooding. What I do is thread it down till it touches and then back off a full turn (360 degree rotation) to 1.5 turns. In three weeks no gurgling or dry hits! 8-9/10 flavor probably due to the extremely small chamber created between the top of the coil and the concave chimney cap. This build doesn't kick out huge clouds like a 0.6 ohms coil on a RDA, but that's not what we use RBAs for in the first place. The clouds are still respectable though. This build on this device has really become my go-to. I still use my drippers, but I am REALLY enjoying this! Check out the thread I linked for more pics and info if you want.

so many options for coils in the kayfun but I keep going back to a regular build, I think the true performance will come out of perfect wicking

ive perfected my kayfun build for mech mods now and havent used anything else in 4+ months its that good.
24gauge 4/5 wrap on 7/64ths bit wicked with cotton or rayon, depending on the flavor profile of the juice in using. ohms out at .65
never any dry hits, nice and warm, thick vape, killer flavor.

I've been rebuilding RDA's for a couple years. I didn't like the tip drippers (genesis style RBA). And the KF line finally became perfected (cheap) enough to warrant giving then a try. Glad I did!

I think kayfuns must've improved. At one time I had a lot of problems with them. I haven't changed the way I build them at all. If anything I'm a bit more flippant. But them work everytime with no issues now. I stick to the kayfuns with the deep juice channels

i use the kayfun on a V5
10 wraps of 30ga on a 1/6in drill bit and it gives me 2.2 ohms and use 3 strands of peaches and cream yarm from walmart
Never get dry hits or flooding in hot weather
I put the yarn through the coil then wrap it along the deck
Ive run it from 3 watts to 15 watts and the flavor is great all along

3 things: I read all the posts in this thread. .. do some checking on the rayon, can't say it's something I would vape. .... 7/8 wraps of 30ga on the wick(1.1 to 1.3 ohm), (1.5 mm cotton/hemp blend doubled over) .... wick placement is the key, 1mm leads to the coil about 1mm above air hole in center, dual wicks bent down in a U shape to touch the juice feeds and back up to just short of the coil... good vape. ..good flavor. .. no leaks...only my humble opinion.

What I've been noticing more and more is that there isn't just one obviously magical "only" way to build a KF with good results, but many. There are some obviously bad ways to build them though.

Will be new to a kayfun lite within this next week coming up..Some good info here.

Some are saying 1.2 ohm for a mech mod...What about on a mvp 20w with say 8 to 10 watts?

Plan to use 30g kanthal as i already invested in a 100ft roll of it.

ill make sure the coil is 1mm to 2 mm above the air hole as mentioned.

For wicking i have raw organic cotton...Still confused on the best way to lay it out on the deck however.

Im understanding not to make the wick too thick and it slide fairly easy inside the coil and to pre juice the wick as i do all my coils in my kanger tanks anyways...Also understanding not to make the wick too thin as this can cause leaking and gurgling.

So am i missing anything to give me my best shot at a successful build here?

The Kayfuns really work well in the 1.0 to 1.8ohm range. I've built lower with success, but typically build at around 1.2 to 1.5 on all of mine. Though I did really enjoy streching the possibilities of the ES 3.1, I've since started to regulate myself to "normal builds" with a 28g, 2mm inside diameter microcoil with 6 to 8 wraps placed horizontal accross the airhole. Great vape, easy to build, and easy to rewick/coil clean. I have not had a problem with a 0.4 to 0.6 subohm coil getting hot enough to melt the insulator under the positive block, but it it can happen. I have seen the results of a fellow vaporer hashing his Kayfun to the point of failure with a 0.2ohm build and 24g wire. NOT PRETTY! With a 30g wire, I would suggest using a drill to twist two (or more) lengths of wire together (check out Rip's video's on how to do this). Twisting will strengthen the coil and provide a lower resistance rating. It also increases the surface area of the coil to provide greater vapor production. Good luck and have fun! I know I am having fun with mine!

I just bought a KF 3.1 with the nano kit and hybrid adapter for the Nemesis and built this build. My first Kayfun build ever. :)

Got tired of fiddling with the hybrid thing and took it off. Also, I replaced the cheap tank o-rings with Buna-N ones. I also took out some burrs and leftover crap in various holes and ground down the sharp lip of the top channel a tad, with a small round diamond bit.

It's a vertical/chimney build of 1 ohm, 6 wrap of 28 gauge Kanthal on a Blue Screwdriver. (approx. 1.9mm)
Wicked with Labo J.C. on the outside and bunched near the edges of the deck Orchid-style. Nothing in the channels.

Got some gurgles at first, then closed off the AFC a bit to compensate for the big driptip I'd put on using the adapter. Then, no more gurgles.

Looks nice. =)

Working well now, but I think I'll ditch the Nano tank though. I want capacity. ;)

I just love to build & try everything. It's just fun. Hard to fuck up a .22mm or a .29.5mm Kayfun build. Have to develop a skill. I'm vaping, building Mods for Me, & have an Ipod on the way with a broken screen. Just to see if I can fix it. & it holds 7000 songs.

Used to hang out slot car tracks. It would be fun to vape and run your car. No track I know of allows smoking, but vaping should be ok.

I changed it again today:

  • ditched that confining Quartz Nano tank,
  • put on a 3-section Foggy tank,
  • stuffed a wee bit more cotton down the chimney sides (fogger style)
  • used the stock chimney
  • kept the Nano top cap
  • Still using the DT adapter with a Fogger DT.

:D

Bitching vape now:

It draws and tastes almost like the Fogger v4, can't make it leak, no dry hit even on a 5sec hit, holds 3ml+, and isn't TOO huge at 177mm total height with a VTC3 18650.

I am NOT using the leaky hybrid adapter or it'd be a tad shorter..don't care about that.

Cool man:)
Never did get a build like that to work for me, I went with the criss-cross X pattern flavor build in mine.:)

Very cool "Frankin-K-Fun"!

Yeah, I figured I'd used enough KF parts for my Orchids, now I should hack a Kayfun too. ;)

Really is working well, I'm kinda surprised after all I'd heard about them. Not totally sure if the chimney is stock..are the stock ones two-part chims?

Nice thing is, I got both the stock parts and the upgraded parts, so I can mix 'n match even more.

Still need to sort out the hybrid adapter so that it doesn't leak and I can use it. There are threads on FT about it, but I haven't gotten around to them yet.

Just in case anyone might wanna see, here's the parts as they were:

Brushed SS Nemesis w/ FDV magnets, Brass rice pin and switch body and silver-plated connectors. Magnets are thick and STRONG...they seem plated too?

KF 3.1 + Hybrid Adapter + Quartz Nano Kit + 510 adapter
Positive pole is drilled, not sure if that is stock.

Alright, now let's see you put it all back together! Lol. On a serious note, what does the nano chimney do for the flavor/vapor production! I can imagine that you get a warmer vape, and possibly slight more flavor due to reduction of the chamber distance from the coil to expansion point (end of drip tip). However, except for the slight possible flavor increase, I can only see a reduction of tank capacity as being the only difference. However, I have not used a nano kit on any of my K-Funs. So, I'm really looking for input prior to purchasing a quartz/pyrex kit or nano kit.

Ya, the parts all got put together. Or, packed away. ;)

This is my first Kayfun, so I can only surmise that it's to shorten the thing. No other reason I can see for it.

As the mod came to me, it was in 18350 mode with the brass hybrid adapter in use and the KF had the Nano tank on it too.
Very small, for a pocketable type of mod.

Me, I don't care about that, I prefer having capacity and battery life. So, it got turned into what you see assembled above.

Thanks; I really couldn't care much about stealth vaping either (said the person that still thinks a Vamo V3 + Kayfun is "pocket friendly"!). When I do purchase a quartz kit, it will probably be the full size due to tank capacity is more important to me. I still use my drippers for "clouds of fun", but usually take my K-Funs out and about for convenience.
