rayon cellucotton?

I just got this stuff yesterday and so far i like it better than organic cotton. it comes in 500 ft boxes for just over ten dollars and its easier to use than cotton because its all stranded already in one piece. It is made of rayon instead of cotton and gives a even cleaner taste and soaks up juice much quicker. has anybody else had any experience with this stuff yet? If you havent then definitely check it out. It can be found in most beauty supply stores like sally's. I want to know if most other people prefer it over cotton after giving it a try?

If you check out pegasus1337 on youtube, he has a review. He is also sending out a one foot sample if you send him a self addressed stamped envelope and make a review video. Offer runs through the end of July! A good way to give this stuff a try, imo! I'm looking forward to other reviews, too. Zvaper has done a video, also!

Be careful when you order. Make sure it is 100% rayon fibers, not cotton. All the boxes look the same. Look for the model number.
Found this here...

This stuff is made from rayon a man made fiber somewhat like nylon. It is NOT safe to use to vape with getting it hot enough to vaporize juice gives off the funes of the chemicals used to make it. Don't use this stuff it is not safe.

I disagree it's extracted from ground plant fibers if you do a little research you can find exactly how it's made it is NOT the same as Rayon clothing Which would be unsafe to vape.

Rayon is a manufactured regenerated cellulose fiber. It is made from purified cellulose, primarily from wood pulp, which is chemically converted into a soluble compound. It is then dissolved and forced through a spinneret to produce filaments which are chemically solidified, resulting in synthetic fibers of nearly pure cellulose.[1] Because rayon is manufactured from naturally occurring polymers, it is considered a semi-synthetic fiber.

Thermal conductivity
Rayon has a slight cool touch (contact coldness) when in contact with the skin. When compared with cotton, rayon has a cooler feel because of a high initial thermal conductivity.

Flammability behavior
You may think that rayon is flammable. However, rayon which has no fusion point shows flame resistance depending on the use of the fiber (Rayon has high flame resistance when a certain amount of fiber is inserted into a certain space). Although it shouldn’t happen, in case of a real fire, the gas and smoke are important factors that should be evaluated in addition to flammability.

Melting point: This fiber becomes weak when it heated above 150 C.

Combustion gas
Combustion gas has no toxic gas as it is originated from C, H and O.
Smoke Properties

Not much smoke is emitted in burning.

Incinerated residue
When the fiber is incinerated, little ash remains.

Water absorbsion
Its water-absorbing property is affected by the product type. Rayon has the ability to absorb water in the fabric while storing approximately 80% of its own weight within the fiber.

I am definitely going to boil mine first. Who the heck knows what is in cig filters and all the chemicals in cigs, too. I think it is worth a try. Thanks for the info, Danup!

Not to mention what they put into cartomizers, if anyone here still uses them. People used to use aquarium foam, this seems more innocuous to me, just sayin!

I boil mine 3 times for 15 minutes each boil squeeze out all the water I can and dry on a cookie sheet in a 225 degree oven.

I saw that before. If it's as good as the reviews, it's worth checking out. At that price, nobody can really say no, especially when there's really expensive imported cotton out there.

I don't boil my 100% organic cotton . Boiling it will make it dirtier than it was to begin with in my opinion. Cotton absorbs anything it comes in contact with. Unless you have a clean sterile room, don't boil it.

Got a sample (about a foot of it) from a friend who ordered a box from sally's I think. 500 ft of it. She send some to alot of us. ( I mean 500 ft of this stuff will last a group of people a long time) I like it and as pegasus1337 on youtube said, it does not take as much as cotton. First try was nice, good taste, no real problems. I do think i did not use enough, so next try will use more of it. Like all things new, you have to experiment with it..

as Jcc2k says, watch what you order. Plus his picture is the first box I have seen that was not 500 ft of it. On Sally's site you can get the 500 ft of it or the 10 ft of it. The 10 is cotton, the 500 ft one is rayon. as he says look close to be sure...

Will this replace cotton?
maybe but both have their good points.
Now readyxwick is suppose to be the bomb, but for the price, I will wait for a possible price drop.
Plus i don't have a torch. a real one which you will need to clean it with.

first of all ....you dont have a clue of what youre talking about....its not at all like nylon.....
its made of cellulose.....uh wood.....
next time you try to convince people to do something, you should at least put the effort out to research the subject matter.
fact....cotton has more chemicals in the process than rayon......
cotton is the crop that has the most pesticides used in its growing...even organic....

To add to what Brianc and others have said burning cotton is just as if not worse than burning cellucotton(rayon fiber). Cotton fumes are toxic when burned. Im all for being cautious but complete misinformation just hurts everyone.

I picked up a box from sally's and like it.It is like cotton but seems to wick better and you dont get that "sucking on a t-shirt" taste when ya put a new wick in.

About boiling my organic cotton, I am trying to remove the chemicals used in processing. Not doing a great job though, as I can taste them when I first install a new wick. I guess the juice flavor eventually overtakes it, though. Is anyone boiling the cellucotton? I was wondering if there is that chemical taste when you first try it?

I personally do not boil. You have to realize the organic cotton, cellucotton or really anything we are using as wicks that come from beauty products/medical use are about as clean as you can get it meaning boiling really isnt gonna do anything. They should all be sterile. These items or the ones I use or have used are made to come in contact with skin or be used orally so none of them should have any chemicals left on them. I am not saying there are no chemicals on them(there shouldnt be) but if there are I would be shocked if boiling them did anything at all.

I have never tasted chemicals with organic cotton. The only taste I get is that "chewing on a t-shirt" taste. The cellucotton I have which is what most others are using has no taste to me but I dont claim to have the best palate so millage may vary.

:rolleyes:Sorry bro but you're wrong about it not being safe. Maybe do a bit of research before you say something that is not accurate. The only part you got close to being right about was the man made part.

Glad to see plenty of informed people here promoting rayon.:) Rayon is the fucking bomb and I will likely never go back to cotton unless I run out of rayon and have no other choice.

Once you get around the small learning curve you will realize just how awesome rayon is.

Got mine ordered, can't wait to try out

i was amazed at how many replies yall gave me so quickly! these forums are awesome haha.. i saw alot of you wanted to boil it and ive done some research since i started using the cellucotton and everything ive read basically said not to boil anything your using for wicking because by doing that your introducing many things in that water including minerals and any tiny microbes or bacteria in the water. And in my opinion i dont want to vape any of that so just pull it out the box and use it basically xD and my boss at the shop said he found out that the stuff melts around 400 degrees but im not sure how accurate that is so just be careful when you get really low in the sub-ohm and let us know if it starts melting xD

From what I understand the rayon that is used in CelluCotton is the same as making artificial silk and the byproducts of its creation I hear can be pretty disturbing to some people. You would definitely have to use this one at your own risk until further research is done. However, I have decided to use it and find it to be the best wicking material I have ever tried and as far as I know I've tried most of them. It absorbs the e-liquid evenly and quickly, gives no real aftertaste, the flavors I vape taste more pure, its fluffiness holds up, the rewicking frequency is less than cotton (cotton I change out 1-2 times/week, this so far has been 2 times/month). Of course, I took the plunge and used it but you may want to do some research and, of course, your mileage may vary if you decide to use it. I bought mine at Sally's Beauty Supply in 500ft and the box number is 44060 and ran me about $11.

I believe someone asked what it is used for in the beauty world and it is primarily just a replacement for cotton, kind of like here. When cleaning your make-up you can use CelluCotton, or when getting your hair dyed to prevent the dye from getting on your skin.

I use it in all of my ATTYs and I am sub ohming with it right now at 0.4oh and it holds up just fine. It's much easier to recognize that the wick is drying out with this stuff. And if and when a dry hit does happen it is not anything as horrible as a cotton dry hit. Dry hits are always bad but at least with the rayon you still have your lung function and can immediately continue to vape. Of course after you re-drip lol

If people are worried about Cellucotton from Sally's you can buy the medical rayon balls. I used to see people say that if CVS sterile was good enough for an open wound then it was probably safe to vape without boiling. Well, if that logic holds true than medical rayon balls used in surgery should be safe enough to vape without boiling too right? The other forum has some good research on this stuff and i personally do not worry about using it. I've been using the Cellucotton from Sally's for three weeks now with great results.

I've tried it and got a really nasty taste from it. Will never use it again, I'll stick with my sterile cvs cotton.
CVS sterile cotton tastes really awful, bleachy, chemically...IMO. I used peaches and cream yarn for a while and it loses it's bad taste pretty quick but those CVS sterile cotton balls, yuck! Switched to organic cotton balls, if you haven't tried organic cotton, boiled or straight, I urge you to try it, you will never go back to that CVS made in mexico, sterilized in the U.S. bleached and treated nonsense. Not a personal attack just want ppl to know what their vaping and experience the best, cleanest, most enjoyable vape they can. Give it a shot if you haven't...So glad I did!!!

To add to what Sully said If your referring to cellucotton I have to think you either used the wrong stuff or made your wick wrong. I have been using this stuff for a couple months and frankly there is no taste from it. For the first couple drags you might get a "sterile" type taste and others have referred to it as sorta a sterile hospital taste but you get something similar from CVS sterile cotton(way worse imo)so it really sounds to me like something was not right with the wick. Depending on what atty your putting it in you do have to do it a little differently that cotton.

If your using stuff from pill bottle, etc thats gonna carry residual flavor from the pill dust. I prefer the sallys.

I get no flavor at all from mine, and I've been using it for weeks. Something's not right if you're getting a flavor - maybe it's not pure rayon?

I was given some today and it is easier than cotton and tastes better. I can detect some subtle notes in a coul eof my juices that I didnt detect before.

Ill be finding a Sallys tomorrow.

Ramie fiber all the way!

Jury's out for me. Reading about the manufacturing process is kinda scary. And since it's not meant for "consumption" would seem to me the manufacturer wouldn't be required to make sure all the toxins are totally rinsed out before boxing it up for sale.

The last step in the process is to remove the chemicals used to degum the stuff.

That is why I boil the living daylights out of it before I use the stuff.

If you look at the fine print of your bag of organic cotton you may find that it has been treated to whiten the product.

Sodium Peroxide I think. Hell I even called the 800 number on the bag of organic I purchased from CVS and they told me it was used.

I boiled that as well!

And I don't think that Silica, Eco-wool or SS mesh is meant for consumption either.

But we still use the stuff:D

I personally use nothing but rayon, for everything. It just wicks so much better than cotton, and my vape never tastes faintly of old T-shirts anymore. I understand some people are paranoid about the idea, but honestly after the crap I put in my lungs over the years I'm not worried. Unless my doctor says my lungs are exploding I'm never touching cotton again. This stuff is as easy to work with as cotton, tastes as clean as SS mesh, and wicks better than either of them.

I have been using rayon also. I talked smack on it at first for being unsafe but im stuck to not using cotton. I have a reaction to cotton. This rayon has brought new life into my vaping. Working with silica SUCKS. you have the dust and residue everywhere. It is just a pain. Plus im pretty eerie about silica. Rayon has proven to be great. I have been using since saturday and have had 0 issues so far.

Rayon is made with a batch of nasty stuff, the theory of safety for wicking is that all these chemicals are removed in the processing for the end result. I just don't know about that, nobody has tested the Rayon for chemical residues left over, that I could find, or quantify what levels are meaningul or not.
You can find ton of tree-hugger sites that tell you never to wear the stuff because it will make you sick....likely over zealous....or they could be hyper sensitive, or convinced themselves they are hyper sensitive.
http://www.ilo.org/oshenc/part-xiv/textile-goods-industry/item/883-viscose-rayon That is Cellucotton
Rats inhaling Rayon in 1969 http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/00039896.1969.10666904#preview
MSDS on Rayon. http://www.carbatec.com.au/pdf/manual/MSDS RAYON.pdf Says INCOMPATIBILITY WITH: Avoid contact with strong oxidants, perchloric acids, nitrates. Does that mean anything to vaping, I don't know. That MSDS is different that the one I saw circulating around.

Boiling is not going to remove the chemicals, it might lesson them, or it might just fuse them in, I have not idea. The Chines dog chicken Jerky snacks that killed thousand of dogs, was Irradiated (real Nuclear Nuking, not microwave nuking), so all the living things virus and bacteria were killed, but the chemicals remained.

Does Rayon taste all that much better....than something that is not manufactured with 10 toxic chemicals. Don't know, and I won't.

Rayon is a calculated risk to try, I am pretty sure I will opt out of the beta tester program.
It might be totally safe, but that weird taste on the first hits by some reviewers, means some nasty whatevers are being given off. Its not burning rubber grommets they are tasting.

I looked into the green version of Rayon, which is Lyocell or brand name Tencel, it definitely uses way less toxic stuff in the manufacturing, but you end up with nano-fibers. Sounds great Nano is a buzzword. But the problem with this alternative to Rayon is Nano stuff is so small, you can not get it out if it goes into something.....like a Cell of your body in your lungs. Nano so small it enters Cells, and I am sure that Nano whatever, is going to be carried up in steam. After how long or does it matter.....to me it doesn't I won't vape anything Nano-particle sized, the research will be in in about 10 more years.
But Nano does kill factory workers in China, from inhalation, and the Lyocell Rayon is the near same size of Nano-ness. Is that science, no, the lab-coats will need to start killing some rats, when they get funding and figure out how to test the Nano stuff on animals without effecting the lab workers.....and that Nano stuff is going to fly right through a Lab-worker respirator.

These two links combined are enough for me to say no to Lyocell Rayon
