Take the milligrams of nicotine per milliliter figure from your e-liquid (6, 12, 18, or 24 for example) and multiply it by how many milliliters of e-liquid you go through in a day.
Now divide that figure by 3.3 This will give you an approximation of the equivalent number of cigarettes that would have been smoked to get the same nicotine.
Example:
I use 5 ml of e-liquid a day
It is 12 mg/ml
5 x 12 = 60
60
divided by 3.3 = 18.18 cigarettes
Its equates to me smoking 18 cigarettes a day, without all the bad.

Kind hard to really figure out because it depends on the delivery system you are using.
The better the delivery system the easier the nic is passed to the body - even at lower nic levels.
Some disposables use as much a 60mg because the delivery system is so bad.

I agree.
But this will give anyone using a tank or carto system a rough estimate. Cig a like probably not.

Scuba,

What is the rational behind this calculation. Also wouldn't it be more pertinent to know how much say a 24 mg puff compares to a puff on a Pall Mall cig? I don't know but I have searched this topic to death and all I ever come up with is "Well it is hard to know how they compare"... etc.

also you state divide by 3.3 with out explaining where that figure comes from. not all analogs are 3.3 mg per one some are 1.2 and so on.
Historical data as between 40 and 60 milligrams (the total amount in about 2 cigarettes if all of the nicotine was absorbed)
source then you have TNO level

lordmage,

Most of the cigs in data sets I have seen are in the 1.2 mg range I thought. My problem with looking into this is there are so many data sets it gets a little confusing and then all the data sets throw in the caveat that the tests were don by a mechanized smoke machine not a person just to muddy the water even more.

It is based on the assumption (evidence concurs) that compared to smoking, vaping is approx 33% as effective at giving your favored nicotine experience. Also that the average cigarette contains 1 mg of nicotine.
It is a rough approximate, not an exact scientific calculation.
(30% goes into 100% 3.33 times. 3.3 is used just to make things easier.)

Scuba-Matt,

Well I know this is soon going way over my head.
However it does seem to be accurate in my personal case. I was smoking about a pack and a half a day when I switched to vaping and I use 24 mg juice. So from my own experience I can't debate your "calculation".

It sure would be interesting to see how it works out for others.

It's been on another forum for over two years. When the members do the math and compare it to the number of cigarettes they use to smoke. About 90% of the members (vapers) think its pretty accurate.

Scuba,
90% is more accurate than a lot of "General Rules" we use everyday.
Actually that accuracy gives me enough trust to pass it on to others without feeling like it is some kind of alchemy. :)

Hey Joe .. my apologies if you've already answered this before. Are you planning to release an iPhone app at any point?

Thanks scuba-Mat it gives me an idea. I was asked yesterday and I did not really know. And... I got to admit I don't care that much, anything is better than analog

I get asked this question a lot, I even had the nurse at the dr.s office have this conversation with me last week....
How much are you smoking now?
I quit, but I am vaping,
Then in other words you are smoking, you are just cheating!
At least I am not taking in the thousands of other chemicals...
Dead silence!

Seems like it makes sense, but there a lot of variables to consider.

With vaping:
Cart vs Tank vs RDA. What ohms is the coil the device is using? What wattage are you running at?
How long a puff do you take? How long are you holding in the vapor before exhaling?
Mouth hit? Mouth to lung hit? Straight lung hit?

With Cigs:
Ultra Light, Light, Medium, Full Flavor, 40s, 100s, and brand (ie, American Indian vs Camel or Newport)
How long a drag do you take? How long are you holding in the smoke before exhaling?
Mouth hit? Mouth to lung hit? Straight lung hit?
How often does the cig sit between hits and for how long? - I think this is the most important one. With vaping, there's no or very little wasted vapor. But any time your not inhaling from a cig there is smoke (and thus nicotine) that is just going into the air and not into your lungs. Just because 2 people both smoke a pack a day doesn't mean they both get the same amount of nicotine in their body, one could be inhaling non-stop, the other could be putting them down between hits and having overall half the cig smoulder on its own without the smoke being inhaled.

The real issue here isn't ONLY the delivery of the nic. You have to bear in mind the tobacco companies have figured out how to give us more nic with each drag of a cigarette. The chemicals in cigarettes aren't exactly there for flavor or smell, they're there to get you addicted. Aside from the side effects of chemical addiction, they also enhance your bodies ability to absorb nicotine. So realistically even if you vape a mililiter of 24mg liquid your body doesnt as readily absorb it as it would have from an unfiltered Kamel. E-liquid majorly comprises of a flavor, nicotine, vg and pg; none of the ingredients aid your body in the nicotine absorption. So realistically you can't really do a cig = ?ml because each of us absorb it differently and vape differently. It's the main reason i quit going to many local B&M stores. They either try to say 'this is equal to a carton of cigarettes' or they have no idea with the difference between a kayfun, patriot or 3D... long story, old story lol.
