Today I got a new tobeco smpl mod.

It was working fine, but sputtering juice cause I have a hot build(running at dual 5 wrap 22g) so I was tinkering with it and coils were heating up etc. So I went to make an adjustment to the coils, and I screwed back in my RDA(deringer clone) and threw in a battery screwed on the bottom and fired it and my mod got really really hot, so I took off the button and the battery was super hot, and started eventually leaking. So I let my mod cool, tried to adjust the RDA screw, then tried it again and it fried another battery. So far I've fried 4 batterys, I took my RDA to a shop and it fired fine on other mods. But when I put it back on the smpl, the same thing happened again, really hot battery to the point the battery was leaking...

Please hell idk what to do or what the problem is...

First off stop!!!!! going through 1 battery is enough and you have gone through 4....I'm confused why you would have kept trying after the first...

The clone my buddy let me use for a day just to check it out had a really bad bur inside by the 510 connection from crappy machining, it was enough to short on the battery if your 510 pin wasn't far enough out. Check inside to make sure there is no burrs or metal from the 510 threads on the underside of the hybrid top, shine a light in there and check it out:) Good luck.

I figured it out, the center post is loose, and turning it somehow tightens the pin to where it doesn't stick out, so I'm just gonna get a whole new RDA and new batteries. Prob mutation v4

@Youngjudochop ....

Welcome to Vaping Underground....for your safety and the well being of others, please do not ever EVER buy a hybrid topcap mech mod again. 4 batteries you fried, that is four chances you could have seriously hurt or injured yourself or someone else. Not to sound harsh but those are very advanced mods that can be very dangerous. We were just tonight having a conversation about why some of us think they should be banned for safety's sake and here is a fine example. I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have be please stop using this mod...I would hate for you to hurt yourself....here is a thread showing just how bad things can get when you don't pay attention, or use the wrong battery or a hybrid mech improperly.

http://vapingunderground.com/thread...i-only-recommend-name-brand-batteries.107326/

In the video it shows a guy that used a shit battery with the wrong tank on a a hybrid mech and caught his apartment on fire because of it. If your center pin won't stay in place than don't use that mod, it's that simple...there are a lot of atty's that are NOT designed for hybrids and only a small amount that are. I blame the guy that sold you that set up in part...if you bought it online than you should have done your homework or come here and asked questions before you dived into such advanced gear...and just for what? to blow bigger clouds? The derringer is a tiny little flavor atty that can put out some vapor but it get super hot because of it's size....it could have been much worse and you got very very lucky....4 times. I don't know what battery you were using but all of them were thankfully solid and good. I am not saying you couldn't use a Derringer on a hybrid, but your's just wasn't working for it, even within the same type of atty not all of them are created equally. I have 6 kayfuns, 1 authentic and 5 clones...out of the six only 2 can by used on a hybrid and the authentic isn't one of them....my pin doesn't stick out far enough and can't be adjusted and out of the other 5, only two of them have adjustable screws that hold in place well enough that it's possible to put them up against a battery without moving the screw or indenting the battery causing the same problem.

I can't believe it...you're the cat with nine lifes....please, please...don't do it again

Holy sheepshit, Chong! You vented 4 batteries and didn't blow your hand off?!? Congrats!

As @madmonkey says, the SMPL and other hybrids can ONLY be used with attys with a fixed center pin that protrudes a significant amount (say 1-1.5 mm) from the bottom of the threads - any less or any wiggling is inviting venting or an explosion (you're lucky you just got the venting, or "leaking" part).

Clone mods are fine, but I definitely don't cheap out when it comes to batteries, and for safety reasons I don't even mess with hybrid mechs even though there are plenty of people who feel they're safe in the right hands - I've been vaping for years and don't trust a pin to be sturdy enough to not become dislodged in m pocket to the point I'm willing to risk blowing my wang off for 0.1 less voltage drop.

I'm of the belief that in this day and age there's no reason to resort to a mech other than for fun or schlong-measuring contests (read: cloud comps). Regulated dual-battery mods are so cheap and of such high quality that the risks we took even as late as mid-2014 for a good vape seem pointless these days. Here's my big thread on what to know when getting into advanced deviceslike the SMPL/Derringer you've got your hands on, I hope you'll spend 15-20 minutes with it and it serves as some help:

Alright guys, I got 3 Samsung batterys, a new derringer RDA(this ones pin does not budge(very sturdy) and is not adjustable but does stick out atleast 2mm) and am running a dual 24g 5 wrap, RDA does not get hot at all. I think it's pretty safe, I've had no problems so far.. But for future reference what is a non hybrid mod thats decent that you'd recommend, I had a stingray before my smpl, but I felt it was a bit outdated.

I've had 2 dozen mechs from authentic black copper stingrays and nemesis's too the cheapest pos fastech magnito clones and I can honestly tell you the best mech mod with a top cap and the lowest voltage drop I've owned is a Hcigar Copper Nemesis clone...I've had two of them, sold one to a friend...with a .2 build and a VTC 4 or Samsung 20R battery it had a voltage drop of .4 max.

Best of luck to you and hoping you have no more battery issues.

There are a lot of great mechs, I think the "best mech" ever will always be a matter of opinion....my favorite mech is still my Greek Vapor's Nemesis...it doesn't have the lowest voltage drop of all the mech's I've owned by any means...but it is the best and smoothest mech I've ever had and the only one, even out of other authentics, that the switch has always stayed cool as can be and it still has the stock spring and I've got it warn in to the point that it's smoother than some mech's with magnet switches I have...I think the Nemesis set the bar....sure...there might be "better" more advanced mechs that came after, but I still think the Nemesis set the standards for which all good mechs are measured....to each their own :)

I certainly like my copper nemesis and copper manhattan and 2 copper SMPL's.

I made my nemesis into a hybrid:p

Oh..sad day ..never guess at that...rule #1

22g and 5 wraps?....are you familiar with the steam engine site to help determine ohms?...and i say that as its a general reference guide and only a quality ohm meter should be used.

Did you know that just moving the coils or coils 1mm can have an effect on the ohms and its always good to do your build on an ohm meter so you know exactly what you have after the final fiddling around with it?

Do you know the inside diameter of your coils?...meaning what the diameter of the screwdriver or whatever you wrap it on?

24g 6 wrap, and I did not know that, that would make quite a difference. I might just pick a meter up tomorrow instead of putting it off..

The most accurate ohm meter ive heard of is from USA ohm meters...its not cheap being over $20.00 but its the best you can get...Buying a 10 dollar ohm meter is better than nothing but accuracy can be a great safety feature.

A schlong-measuring contest isn't very fun if you already blew your schlong off while getting ready for the schlong-measuring contest!

I like my wang and plan on keeping it safe as long as possible :D

Wow, some people should just stick to regulated devices. You would think after venting four batteries the shop he went to would have given him some info on safety. But I guess he'll have a cool matching mech and topper that blows his hand and/or face off.

This ohm meter from Fasttech is 1/3rd the price and just as accurate as the usa ohm meter. I have both. The guy who owns usa ohm meters is an argumentative asshat and you get no warranty. The FT reader has a built in battery that lasts months before needing a quick 20 minute usb recharge, and has a built-in volt meter. The usa meter, you have to supply your own AA batteries.

Perhaps because you wrecked 4 batteries and didn't bother using an ohm meter? All prime examples of what not to do.

A mech is a tool that should be treated with care.

On the positive side, you may have helped others by scaring them off making the same mistakes you did.

Ohm meters are a good thing, but this had everything to do with using an atty where the positive contact pin didn't protrude out far enough when tightened down all the way like it should be. The smpl's are very safe as long as you know what you're doing. Basic electricity 101, and understanding how an atomizer works in terms of electrical current flow. Anyone who thinks the contact pins on an rda are adjustable to work with a hybrid style atomizer is mistaken. Loose parts do not make good contact and can cause problems.

On an smpl, when removing the atomizer (if the battery is installed), you always loosen the fire button first. Otherwise you risk loosening the contact pin as you unscrew the atomizer, as the fire switch works as the battery clamp too. Not being in a hurry and using common sense, the smpl is a wonderful mod.

Don't mean to patronize those that know, but it seems many people don't understand the concept of a hybrid style setup

Agree. My meaning was, a combo of venting 4 cells and guessing resistance was the OPs ticket to an ass kicking :). People were starting Co calm down until he said he was happy just guessing.

I use a hybrid topcap for my Nemesis, and am happy with the results, main one being less arcing thus no marks on the cells. The other being a sleeker look.

In my opinion unless the 510 pin protrudes when fully tight it's not suitable for a hybrid device. Some RDA's are designed to be adjustable. These have the positive post press fit rather than relying on the pin. Still wouldn't use it... Maybe if it was my favorite atty and the pin were reverse threaded I'd consider it. Doubtful though.

Even a press fit can come loose if it's not secured by screwing in the contact pin that holds the whole thing together. RDA's are made to come apart so they can be rebuilt if and when the insulators wear out. I've never seen an RDA press fit to the point of non-serviceable. Either way, by unscrewing a contact pin, you are not making optimal contact which is crucial on a hybrid style mod. And that's my opinion.. lol

I know what you're saying. However anything could happen. The build could come loose and short by other means. I like your attitude on minimising risk. People's biggest downfall is not checking their stuff. Someone could have the same attitude as you yet not notice their + battery terminal is all caved in. Seen it happen. How people miss these things is beyond me.

Everyone has their limits with what they're comfortable doing. Some won't go over 10A on a 20A battery. To me it's a waste of a battery imposing that kind of limit. Fair enough if their ADV draws 10A and they like it, but fear of vaping intermittently on a 20A continuous cell I don't really understand the issue. I do however respect their choice. 100%.

Ibe been lucky, all my ADV attys have long pins. My tugboat v2 us probably a bit too long.

Hopefully others will understand the mistakes he made.
