Bad chest infection, throat infection too, worried regarding vaping.

Hi people. When I started vaping again, I got a coincidental throat infection.

I have been vaping for around 3 months now, fairly heavily. Got into it quite quick, started on a Sig30 and nautilus mini then I am on a 150 with RDA's and such, and everything between.

Now, my chest infection is worrying me for one reason. My mum, and my fiancee, have both said it sounds like my chest is full of water, I gather it to be phlegm but there is part of me thinking " Well, I know vaping is safe, but is it possible to leave vape behind?" And be causing this water sound while I sleep?

Or would that just be where it is a bad infection, and there is a lot of phlegm on my lungs? I'm finding it harder to breathe, I have stopped vaping just while this infection clears.

My throat feels fine now, but it won't shift from my chest. This is the 2nd course of antibiotics I am on(well half, I took half a course before seeing my DR of the same medication) so expect to feel well now, as it is over 7 days I have been taking them.

Like I said, throat is clear, chest seems to be worse. Whenever I Cough fluid comes up (yellow phlegm I guess, but thinner).

I am just a bit worried in my silly little head it could be vaping related, as I am really enjoying the experience, the learning, the forums, and so forth so far. But above all it stopped me going back to cigarettes, which would of been highly likely if I did not get a vape.

So, is there anyone that can put my mind at rest, and assure me its not vaping that is causing my chest to be 'wet'?

Keep in contact with your medical provider until the infection blows over. Vaping and nicotine has been shown to not directly affect cellular viability, based on Dr. Farsalinos research into the topic. Vaporizing will cause dry mouth, sinus, and throat because the aerosol pulls moisture from the body during the act of vaping. My suggestion would be to talk to your doctor about the chest issue and maybe buy yourself some mentholated juice to alleviate some discomfort you might be feeling. Vaping is not 100% safe, it should be called harm reduction however in this case you cant say vaping is the cause of your problems. Smoking would have been the problem, vapor PULLS moisture not causes moisture there is no way it is the reason you are sick now. I would say though that if you do not keep your setup clean or use juice which is of questionable origin/quality it could exacerbate your condition.

YOu need to switch to no nic for right now and consider a heavy menthol flavor, i just got over a nasty bout and that was the only thing I wanted to smoke....I hate menthol, but I made a Raspberry Cotton Candy menthol and I freaking LOVED it...

Thank you both. I was thinking a menthol flavour, because wouldn't that essentially work the same way as the old hot water, vicks, and towel over the head to breathe in the vapour/steam trick?

Thank you for showing me it is not related in anyway, I was worried it could ADD moisture, hearing it actually reduces it actually is what I need!

I do not use nicotine in my juice, I use pharmaceutical grade Propylene glycol, and the highest grade VG I could find. I then add flavour concentrates, usually a 70 vg 30 PG mix, but I might go 50 50 as I am chasing flavours now, I have chased the clouds, made ones that fill my room in a hit or two, and now I am more onto just the flavour.

It keeps me off ciggarettes as it keeps me busy, making coils and juice, and also I enjoy vaping. I had actually quit smoking for 4 months before I started to vape again, I know that may sound strange to some, but it was that or the cigarettes. I chose the vape, and am glad I did.

I am making some nicotine containing juice this week though, as my fiancee has a sig50 on the way, she will use it with her nautilus mini. She wishes to switch from smoking to vaping, she did have a sig30 that she enjoyed, using my no nictotine flavours, and it helped her cut down, but it broke and she wants to actually switch to vaping from smoking, so wants some nicotine containing juice.

I have asked in the juice forums, and have some calculators to check the nicotine levels are safe, I am not going to try to poison her, I am not even going to buy they highest strength base, that is 72MG, I am going for 36MG as I feel a bit safer using it.

I was going to make her 18MG due to what I see in the shops, but was told 12 would be better as 18 will be too much for her, the stuff in the shops is for the crappy egos and CE4's that I learnt to vape on a few years ago.

I will order a menthol flavour today, and it should be here by tommorow, day after at worst. (Good postal service round my way) I will make that up, with no nicotine, and occasionally use that to help clear my chest hopefully.

I have been cleaning the drip tip daily in a solution to get rid of any bacteria, incase I pass it back to myself. Today it is not as bad a it was yesterday, So I am hoping these antibiotics clear it. If not, I will go back to the DR, but I do not feel I need to see the DR today, as my mum said there was no strange sound coming from my chest, and I have 2 more days of antibiotics, so hopefully that will do the trick.

Thank you for your answers, I am glad to know it dries things out instead of adding moisture, so I know the vape is not the cause, which is great, as I really enjoyed it and did not want to go back to smoking. I wont though, I am stronger than that and I enjoy the vaping too much.

Rock on. Suggestion for your DIY, keep it simple. and make an 70/30 or 80/20 premix around...

I usually just make 10 Ml's at a time, using a big 10 ml syringe lol. but a premix is a good idea actually, I may do that. I use 70/30 as I think 80/20 will be too thick for my tanks like the lemo and such, and also I want to get a real hit of flavour, and understand it is the PG that carries it?

I found that on days like this, you should go easy on the flavors, but heavy on the menthol. Ive order eucalyptus as well to see what happens. As well as checked out the page of menthols from Halo. They are a forum sponsor as well, so....its nice to keep it in the family. I won a Sample Kit from this wonderful forum a few months ago.

https://www.halocigs.com/e-liquid/menthol-flavors.html

Not even going to lie Conan, I never visited their menthol page till 3 days ago...and now I want every one of them. I have to tone it down (a bit)so I don't go broke, but I can see myself being able to afford at least one or two bottles, for those days Im not feeling well. Keep it tucked away from a rainy day maybe?? I certainly dont plan on smoking it full time....well...I said that about few others from them, so I guess I should wait before I speak...

I have a love hate relationship with menthol, mostly a hate (jk) I used to smoke menthols cigs loooong time ago, switched to regulars, and now I hate both. Thats 100% for sure. BUT my throat LOOOOOOOVED that cooool menthol this past "sick bout".

Just something to consider buddy. Hope you get better soon. While you are stuck in bed check out a video of the Fl Keys :)

Yes but so does Nicotine...
Ok, I don't use nicotine though lol.

So I guess I need the PG. It was either go back to the cigarettes, or this, so I chose this.

Managing to be nicotine free makes me happy, although I have ordered some for my fiancee as she wishes to vape now, sig 50 on the way for her, hope it works.

Thank you for helping me, I am in the UK though so I ordered a menthol flavour from chefs vapours. It should be here tommorow or the next day, I really hope it does help as this chest is so annoying. Today it was slightly better, but I slept sitting up last night, not sure if that is why.

I got my menthol flavoured concentrate today, called natural mint. It advised 10-20%. I used 10%, and it is amazing.

It really clears my passages, and seems to be making me bring up the phlegm from my chest, and I can Breathe more clearly! I will definitely be using this until I get better.

Thanks to everyone that recommended a menthol flvour, it really does help. Also, I am using regular Kanthal till my chest clears and the Sig in power mode, as I know the nickel is unlikely to be causing a issue, but anything that could at the moment I want to elminate.

Glad I can still vape, and even more glad that it is actually helping!

I used to get infections every couple months while smoking. When you have something like a upper respiratory infection it can take up to three weeks for the congestion to clear...that is what my doc told me and it always did. I am not a doctor though so you should take advice from your own doc and do whatever is needed to clear it. I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks mate. It probably is that, just like the tail end of the infection I am now experiencing, as I don't 'feel' ill, like my muscles don't ache and I have no temperature, but I guess all that congestion needs to get out.

I still have to sleep propped up, as if I lay flat it sends me into coughing fits, and my mum and fiancee both commented you could hear the fluid while I breathed, its not happened since using an extra pillow at night, could be coincidence though, but it makes it a bit easier to sleep.

I will see how it goes as I had one more day of antibiotics than I thought, I thought today was the last day but it is actually tommorow. I'l see how I feel after the course is finished, and if its still the same I'l go to my GP, if it carries on clearing like today though I think its just the tail end of it to be honest, like I am coughing up lots of mucus, but its mainly clear now, not yellow, so I guess its not infected fluids? Bit grim I know lol.

Good to hear things are clearing up, yes vaping certain flavors would be akin to vics or the like. Just be careful how much of the concentrates you are using in your liquids because they might cause irritation if used too frequently or with high concentrations. Vape Safe and Vape Happy Friend!

Glad its clearing up for you mate, they can be very nasty chest infections, and can lead to pnuemonia if you leave it long enough, which REALLY drags you down.

If what is coming up now is clear, it is just the residue being cleared from your body. All that yellow and green funky stuff you get is live/dead bacteria, if its clear theres not even really many dead bacteria (There will be some obviously, all fluids will have a level of bacteria, APART from urine, as long as you have no bacteria along your urinal tract, or a UTI. There probably would still be a minimal amount of bacteria though-due to the exit if you get what I mean, but it would be negligible).

So, its clearing, and you will feel much better, you should do already, but once your chest is clear you should feel fully back to yourself.

I always have a bottle of strong mint/menthol concentrate, as I use this to 'reset' my taste buds, Plus I had a bad chest infection around 3 or so months ago, a few months into vaping properly. It was the only flavour I could use-and I believe that it actually HELPED my chest, as I could breathe much easier for around 10 minutes or so after each hit, so I kept it nearby and hit it when I felt really bunged up.

Just a little tip for people with colds or infections-get a blow your head off menthol, and it works just like that old vicks in a bowl of hot water, towel over your head, breathe in the vapour trick, except you are getting a much stronger vapour of menthol, so it is kind of like super Vicks vapour rub lol :)

Conan, been there done that. Had a similar aliment with phlegm, lung infection, leading to asthma. VG was the culprit with subomhing for me. I went to the emergency 3 times gasping for air it got so bad. After a bout with 2 different antibiotics adding in Qvar inhaler to prevent asthma with albuterol inhaler I have it all under control.
I had to switch to a higher pg with a very low ratio of vg. It seemed that vg left a film coating on my lungs and I had a harder time breathing in the upper lungs. I started pooling up phlegm and had to be put on a respiratory for 45mins in emergency the second and third time visiting the ER gasping for air.
It's all good now. Lowered my wattage and also started using temp control nic coils for a cooler warm vape that wasn't frying and weaking the little hairs in my airways that cough up phlegm.

Shit mate, that is bad. I am very happy you have it all under control now-I am fine now as well, this was a good few months back now.

I didn't realise PG reactions were this severe. I guess its like any thing with the potential to cause an allergy-ranging from mild itchiness to full on Anaphylactic shock.

I'm glad you found something that works for you safely. I don't really vape high wattage either-for instance my subtank I use with a 0.7 coil at 16-20 watts. I do occasionally, say once or twice a week, have an hour or so of madness though. I have a dripper set up for these moments I fancy 100+W and just making my house look like London during the times of Smog lol.

What temp are you using?

Also what ratio do you use-if I was you, I would honestly avoid PG COMPLETELY and vape 100% VG, lots of people do this, and you won't be getting small amounts of PG-as if larger amounts were causing damage, I would SUSPECT that smaller amounts are not good for you either-I am NOT a DR though(I have worked in a nursing home, and the nurses taught me lots-I used to do a lot of things nurses are only meant to, but the homes did not care. It was cheaper for them for us to do it) it's just my personal opinion, and as a fellow vaper, I want you to be as safe as possible. Remember this was to stop smoking, and also make it pleasurable for a lot of us-not to end up in hospital literally gasping for air, thats life threatening.

Keep safe my friend.

No I agree NY is a moldy shit hole infected with commies and assholes.

But I was not about the damp and mold problem with the rain issues.
I live in the PWN the sky is grey 8-10 months out of the year and damp.

Vaping is probably not the best idea when you have a lot of fluid in your lungs. When you're quitting smoking, it's not a problem because the source of the fluid buildup (smoking) is gone, so your lungs will eventually drain, even if vaping is somewhat elongating the process. When you have an infection actively contributing to the continued accumulation fluids, it's a different story. Serious complications become a real possibility, as drainage is being inhibited while more fluid is being generated. You run the risk of producing more fluid than you're getting out. Chronic bronchitis and pneumonia become real possibilities.

PG is an irritant. VG is an irritant. Flavoring contains irritants. Even menthol is an irritant, though it can be useful for pain relief and very brief vasoconstriction. These are not things you want to be inhaling directly into your lungs when you're sick with a chest cold. Small amounts are fine, but the amounts inhaled, even in a low-power tank setup, could easily be too much.

Nicotine is also an irritant, but I think that in the right juice (high nic concentration, unflavored, 50/50 base,) it could actually prove beneficial, as nicotine is both a vasoconstrictor and a bronchodilator. As long as you minimize the amount of base you have to inhale to get the nic in there, it could be pretty effective at improving your lung function and speeding up the drainage. I've read of asthmatics using it in such a way to such great effect that they were able to come off of steroid medications and inhalers.

Vasoconstrictors open your airways by causing the blood vessels in the mucous membranes to contract. They also tend to stimulate your SNS to cause muscles close to your mucous membranes to contract - this is what makes stimulant decongestants so effective at clearing you out. Your airways can't hold onto gook very well when the walls tighten-up.

Bronchodilators, OTOH stretch-out your bronchi and bronchioles (all of those little tubes running through your lungs that carry air to and from your aveolar ducts/sacs, which is where gas-exchange in your blood begins.) Bronchodilation decreases airflow resistance and thus makes for more efficient delivery of air to the places it needs to go in your lungs as well as facilitating increased ease of drainage.

How effective this is in practice is going to depend on a lot of factors. I personally would like to see more vaping-specific studies done on this. There are studies on nicotine inhaled through other means to back up these claims, but whether or not the same goes for vaping is unclear.

I personally wouldn't chance it. I'm not a doctor or a scientist... ...just some food for thought that I cooked up with what little I know about how the cardiovascular system works.

When I had a chest infection (it was actually bacterial... ...something I picked up while a viral one was on the way out.) I just didn't vape as much. I'm a sub-ohmer by default. I only own drippers and vape max VG. I did try some 50/50 during that time, but I don't tolerate PG well, so all it did was give me a much drier, more painful cough. I coughed so hard that little flecks of fresh blood came out.

What ultimately did the trick was lots of expectorant, antibiotics, and a full day of no vaping whatsoever. I had been stuck with a nasty cough and lots of fluid buildup for a full week by the time I elected to completely stop vaping for a little while.

As soon as I did that, my condition improved drastically. It was a very productive day, cough wise. After that, my lungs continued to clear out, even after resuming vaping. I think that the infection cleared during the time I stopped.

I was able to gradually bring the power level back up to what I like. I started with some big ole dual 28's running at 30-40 watts and went from there. I closed off the airflow so much that I was essentially MTL'ing. Another thing I would do was exhale through the nose without ever taking the vapor into my lungs.

I think it's probably fine to vape with some gook in your lungs, but only after the infection causing it is over and done with.

And on the PG/VG thing... ...I don't experience the heaviness that some people do with high VG, even with the high-volume, deep-lung vaping I tend to do. PG, on the other hand, gives me a cloying sensation in my chest and makes it harder to breathe after a while.

Hi,

I have gone theough the same condition. I have start vaping and after 2 months of heavy vaping I got the sour throat first then my chest got blocked and then I went to doctor and he gave me antibiotics for 10 days which reduced the sour throat but my chest had same problem, yellowish slime and difficulty in breathing. Then my doctor have given me stronger antibiotics again for 7 days and it got better. Last night I tried again to vape but today morning again I start feeling the same symptoms. Now I am thinking to go back to smoking because I am confused. Any help would be nice. Thanks

If vaping was going to cause you physical problems, it wouldn't have waited 2 months. Correlation is not causation. Vaping was not the cause of your illness.

Hi,
Yes it is as after 2 months I bought new 0mg juice to try and after that I got this problem and I have noticed it as I did this again today. I am going to the shop I think this juice have some problem so I will check it again by using another one. I will buy tomorrow to see if it increase the condition or not

Again, correlation is not causation. When I first started vaping, I stubbed my toe. I stubbed it again today. Does that mean that vaping is causing my stubbed toe?

I don't think vaping is *causing* it... but if you vape high VG, it could definitely be making it worse. VG leaves a thick coating on the airways, and since yours are already inflamed, that compromises the airways, and the thick coat of VG narrows it further -- however it might easily have been a burn from PG that caused (or actually, provided the opportunity for) the initial throat infection; as an asthmatic I know that those can EASILY become bronchial infections. I think your drastically lessening or even avoiding vaping while you're recuperating is a good idea; it might be a good idea to have some high-nic ejuice so you might take a hit or two very infrequently, to stave off cravings. and just be glad you're not a smoker, because if you were, you'd probably be in a hospital, and craving the hell out of a cigarette even while completely unable to breathe -- the very definition of hell on earth!

Hope you get better fast!!! Force fluids like a maniac!

Andria

ETA: also medication containing guaifenesin (SP?!?!) -- it's an expectorant, so you take it with GALLONS of water, and it helps you clear that shit out of your chest.

Another thing to be grateful for, about vaping rather than smoking, I noticed when I had a cold last fall; I really didn't feel much like vaping, and didnt really suffer from not vaping -- if you have a bad cold and can't smell things, vaping loses a great deal of its appeal. Smoking did too; it really sucked to smoke when you have a bad cold, but unfortunately you can't make yourself stop doing it, as you can pretty easily with vaping.

This was quite a while back I started this thread, a couple of years. I was just ill with a really bad chest infection (I can't remember if it was the time I had Pneumonia or not- it could have been though).

It all cleared after the antibiotics, and I am still happily vaping now :)

I noticed that belatedly, but apparently someone with a current problem had awakened the thread, and apparently found whatever I said to be helpful, so there's that. :D There's a natural tendency to think that this new thing is causing whatever fresh hell one is experiencing, but usually it only seems to be true that vaping can make it worse, but doesn't actually *cause* it. I was really pleased last winter or whenever it was; since I started vaping, I do sometimes still get the odd cold or sinus thing, but it's sometimes really hard to know I'm actually sick, the symptoms are so much milder than when I smoked -- and it's a whole lot easier to lay off vaping a bit than it ever was to lay off smoking. that was how I knew I was getting better -- the vape started tasting good to me again, so I could go back to my usual vaping habits. As a non-smoker, a cold really does last about 7-10 days, rather than the 6 wks of tubercular coughing when I was a smoker.
