Does VU webpage scripts poll the server?

When I leave my brower open on VU, the alerts thingy on the top-right corner gets updated all of its own, without me having to reload the page.

I'm asking because the other day, I left my cellphone's browser on VU the entire day (just read VU in the morning and left it alone the rest of the day) and in the evening, it seemed to have consumed rather a lot of traffic off my data plan without me doing anything. But it might have been a coincidence though...

Scripts would run server-side and should not affect you. Perhaps it's the ad images?

IDK, I don't use a cellphone and my info. is from using Opera 12.17 and FF 31 on a PC and Laptop.

There are scripts client-side too - to update the times since posting or last edited and such. And as I said, the number of alerts get updated, meaning something on the page regularly pulls that number from the server. I doubt very much that it's pushed.

I'll crack out the traffic analyzer tonight at home.

Well, I left my browser on the main VU page and left the network traffic monitor on for an hour. Result: no traffic whatsoever, and the alerts thingamabob didn't update itself. I must have dreamt it :)
