Like I need another hobby to add to my passion for vaping:(

My modern multi blade cartridge razor broke about 3 weeks ago.

So I started using the cheap ass disposables while I went on the hunt for a truy great shave.

Did a lot of research and ended up joining a forum devoted to the art of shaving like our fathers or grandfathers used to use/enjoy.

http://badgerandblade.com

I figured if vaping newbies come to us for help, I was thinking that this place could do the same for me.

Long story short, I was right and got a bunch of help and advice.

I ordered a new (as opposed to a vintage collectable) Double Edged Razor, blades (A Hell of a Lot Cheaper than the new cartridge heads), brush, soap, skin treatment and post shave balm. And a Styptic Pencil.

I have been shaving this way for about 10 days now and what a difference!

Sure I picked up a couple of nics getting used to it but it is still worth it!

I actually enjoy shaving now.:D

Anyone else here?

Working outside and came in for a break , it's over 101 deg . here . And saw this post and had to laugh , are we all thinking the same here LMAO ! I used the cheap 2 blade and 3 blade , ......
worthless . But we all shave different and our beards and skin are all different . I went to the quatro by shick and it was ok , but around my beard I want a straight line and used a straight razor .
Then I saw Harry's on line ( because I do not want to spend 20-30 bucks ) , looked at reviews on them , and gave them a try . If you have a light beard they are , maybe great , but for me they are lacking . And my beard is just average , the problem is they are just not sharp ,it seems to me . Great marketing ,I guess ! So , went back to the shick and have been thinking about that double edged razor, I used when I was a kid .
But I really don't want to get into pre shave balm and the brush, foaming the soap , so on and so forth , because I shave everyday and hate it . Why make it more of a production .
But thanks for the post , I may go the double edge route !

It totally get your point, I truly do.

As for Harry's, I did look at them. But really, what's the difference with the stuff they are selling and what Gillette and Schick are selling?

Pretty much the same stuff except Harry's replacement blades are cheaper.

Anyway, I timed the two processes with the stopwatch tool on my cell phone.

From the time I entered the bathroom (even before I removed my robe to shower) I started the clock and stopped it right before I left the bathroom complete with robe and not hurrying.

A: Showered, got lather from a can, slopped on face, shaved, cleaned up and got dry put on bathrobe. 15:37:12

B: Prepared brush and soap, showered, used brush to put soap on face, shaved, wiped face, applied Witch Hazel to face (an astringent to close up your pores after shaving). Cleaned up shaving stuff while face dried, put on aftershave balm and talc, put on bathrobe and leave. 26:05:23

With method B, I get a fantastic shave, my face feels really, Really Clean and Tingly from the extra attention and according to Mrs. Uncle I actually look and smell better.

And these days, I actually look forward to my morning shave!

BTW, top quality blades are about 27 CENTS each and will last a week.

I shave my face and my head. I use the Gillette Fusion. I have tried a bunch of razors, and have found that it is largely the cream that makes the difference. About a year ago I found Creamo shaving cream and that is all I use now. It's like WD40 for the skin. Really amazing stuff.

I tried Harry's and found the blades much better than the Gillette, Schick, bic, disposables. I think it is a closer smoother shave. I use a brush with Macca root shave cream from the Body Shop. I'm on my first tub which was given to me in Feb. of 2014, I guess I'll get another couple of months out of it LOL before I need to replace. Like Vaping it's all personal and whatever works for you is GOOD!!

I may have to look into one. I bought a micro touch one since i shave my head & was hoping it might work better than Gillettes $50 refills, and I looked like I had a scalp massage from Edward Scissor Hands. Currently I've been using Dollar Shave Club & has been working out pretty good, although ordering an extra handle is almost as much as the monthly subscription.

I feel your pain!

I had looked at the Micro Touch One myself and the reviews were hit and miss at best.

Granted that these DE Safety Razors have a learning curve to them but after a few shaves I feel I am in the "Groove".

This is the one that I purchased and it does a really great job!

I think I just may be used to pressing hard on the razor. Which stinks cause they were on clearance at Wal Mart and I seriously have like a years worth of refills for less than $10. It did work really well. I want to try it again but I may have to wait until I have a week off of work. I don't want to walk into work & everyone think I walked through a glass patio door.

Merkur safety razor and feather platinum blades for me. Been using it for 3 years now, still on the same 10 pack of feather blade boxes I bought from Amazon.

Safety razor user here. Have an older Gillette adjustable that I use most of the time. A razorock jaws when I let it go a bit. I use Voskhod blades. Tabac in a bowl, & a fine synthetic brush, along with fine aftershaves. Fresh vetiver, & platinum.

At the moment I am very exited!

I just purchased the DE Razor of my dreams.

The Gillette Long Handle "Black Beauty" Adjustable Razor.

Once I get it I am going to pony up the $$$ and have it totally restored!

Black Beauty Adjustable Razor.jpg

While I still love my Parker 99R I have been mostly shaving with a Gillette "Slim" Adjustable

Nice to start the day with a Barbershop Shave!

And Ruben, after 3 years using the same 10 pack of blades, treat yourself to some fresh blades.

I really like the Gillette Silver Blue (or is it the Blue Silver) blades.

I like to change them about every five days and I do notice a difference.

But to each their own.

But after about 5 days, I feel them start to drag a bit.

Same with the Feather Blades.

I have a couple of soaps but the one I use the most is Van Der Hagen Scented Luxury Soap. It gives my face a very clean and "Tingley" feeling.

Witch Hazel for immedialty after I shave and Nivia Aftershave Balm.

I also use Clubman Talc for the old school Barbershop finish.

Until I find a worthy container, I put some of the talc in a Ziploc Sandwich bag and I use an old Boar Bristle Brush to apply after my shave.

No cologne or aftershave as the rest of the stuff I use gives me a nice, clean and old fashioned scent that belive it or not gets noticed.

Nice, RJ! I use witch hazel also. Not a fan of the talc. But the Fine aftershaves have menthol in them. It's quite refreshing. I was actually using clubman aftershave before I got my hands on the fine ones (SWMBO is NOT a fan of clubman. Lol)

When I first started with the Van Der Hagen soaps. It's good stuff. But the Tabac has that classic "old man" aroma. & it's slick as owl spit ta' boot!

Merkur 34c
Badger brush
Nivea shave cream
gave myself plenty of time (didn't want to look like I just stepped out of a blender )
not one nick or cut , and a close shave , with 2 passes and a touch up . Got Personna blades ,100 for 12$ , comes out to 12 cents a piece .
Some guys are right it is the way to go . This post , was kind of the last push towards it !

Merkur 39C Slant Bar razor
Merkur and Feather blades
Black tip Badger Brush by Lord
Proraso Original formula shave soap (green tub)/Palmolive menthol shave cream (Italian)
Alum Block for after shaving (does the same thing as Witch Hazel)
Geo F Trumper Sandalwood Skin Food (this stuff really works great).

The 39C is an aggressive razor, one pass with short strokes is all you need with a good slick lather. Since I have piano wire tough whiskers, The Merkur slant bar was a godsend. I'd been using a Gillette Imperial Adjustable for a long, long time, doing 2 passes. The Merkur beats it in closeness easily. It does have a learning curve since it is such an aggressive bitch of a razor.

ed: I also have a Merkur Futur adjustable. At setting 5/6 it's pretty aggressive, gets the job done, but not like the 39c slant.

I absolutely hate shaving and do it once a week as most. The fact that I use crappy disposable razors may have something to do with that. This thread inspired me so I checked out that Badger and Blade forum, and subsequently ordered a safety razor, soap, a brush, a bowl, and a stand from Amazon. I hope this is more enjoyable than what I've been doing.

If you need help, or some advice from a guy who has been using one most of his adult life, let me know.

What type of razor did you end up getting?

Well after looking at reviews of several, I settled on the same one Uncle got - the Parker. I like that it's on the heavier side. And the price wasn't bad.

I hope you ordered a Styptic Pencil as well. Extremely valuable when you are first learning!

I also recommend getting some Witch Hazel to slap on your face immediately after your shave. Let it dry as you clean your gear after your shave and then apply some aftershave balm.

It used to be that I pretty much refused to shave on weekends as I hated it!

Now, I just gotta have my shave before the day officially starts.

I just started DE shaving a few months ago. I love it!

I was gifted a Dorco Prime set, along with some soaps from Maggard Razor. My current set up is:
Gillette Slim or Rocket
Gillette Silver Blue blades
Omega boar hair brush
Proraso/Col. Conk Lime/Bay Rum

And I looooove Nivea Shave Balm. Awesome stuff.

Good news! The only advice I can offer beyond what Uncle has said is start shaving from the top of the face down with short strokes with the beard grain, rinsing the razor frequently. Do this technique for a couple weeks or so daily, this will allow your face to get accustomed to the DE razor which is significantly different from the el cheapo disposables. After that you can do all the double passes and against the grain shaving you want without your face getting raw.

@UncleRJ, just realized we have just about the same taste in shave gear. If you dig that tingly feeling after you shave go for some Proraso (green) or CO Bigelow cream which is the same stuff in a tube. I have both of them and they're by far my favorites.

Thanks for the advice, fellas. @UncleRJ - I failed to order a styptic pencil with the rest of the stuff. My wife is a dog groomer and has some of that in her shop, though. I may steal a bit. I also don't have any witch hazel or any type of aftershave balm. This is all new to me (obviously), so I'm not real sure what I should get. I just got the razor handle, blades, soap, brush, bowl, and stand. Any recommendations would be most welcome.

I had my first shave with my new stuff a few minutes ago. I haven't shaved in a week and I can definitely tell a difference between this shave and my crappy disposable razor shaves! Those things would tug like crazy with a weeks growth and this just glided right through it all. I'm hooked already! I also managed to get through the whole thing without a nick!

@Zamazam - I took your advice and shaved only with the grain. I'll continue like this for a little while to get the ol' face used to it. I'm sure it will be better without a weeks growth as well...

@Hank Spankman - Thanks for the link! I'll be checking that out here in a little bit.

@jmoney426 - I hear ya! I have two young kids as well and my "me" time doesn't really come until they and the wifey are in bed!

Witch hazel can be found in any grocery store/ pharmacy. I bought the Top Care one for two bucks and change I think. As far as shave balm, I would definitely recommend the Nivea aftershave balm. Nice light scent, it feels great on the face, and it can also be found pretty easily.

Glad you're enjoying your shaves!

I use the Master Comb Spice.

Then once that dries, I use a wee bit of the Nivea balm.

After it has been on for a few minutes, I blot my face with a dry towl to remove the excess.

So, I am dissatisfied with my standard 3-blade razor. I prefer the 3's over the 4's and the 5's because I like the control that I get with fewer blades. I can get a closer, more comfortable shave with fewer blades. I'm curious about the techniques used with even less that that. I am of Spanish heritage and it really shows in the coarseness and thickness of the hair growing on my chin and neck. It's absurdly hard to tame entirely, let alone style. It's a bit intimidating to make the jump.

Anybody want to give me a push in the right direction? I will of course be watching this thread and doing my own research. I just don't know where to start when it comes to the proper equipment and technique.

Also, Nivea knows what's up when it comes to shaving care. Guess that part of the battle's over, at least.

IMHO, when you really want to enter a new world (Like Vaping for example) find a good forum, give it a good lurk and then join.

Myself joining this place to learn about shaving is a great example.

http://www.badgerandblade.com

You can look me up there if you like as I use the same ID.

The main thing to learn IMHO, is not to use ANY pressure at all on the part that holds the blade and to learn the correct angle. Done correctly, the razor will just glide over your face and remove the offending whiskers without you reallly feeling the process.

And reprogramming yourself to change the blades a LOT! You are no longer being ripped off by the prices for those multi head cartridges. A top of the line really expensive razorblade for a DE razor will set you back WHOPPING 35 CENTS! So if you purchase 100 blades you are out $35, enough for almost an entire year of really close or Barbershop Shaves as that is the goal.

And I change them out after I have gotten three shaves with them (I could probably get more but you really don't want to press your luck and use a blade past its prime!

Be prepared to spend more time in the bathroom. Me, I have never been one to linger. Quick shower, quicker shave and the tooth brush and I am out in about 15 to 20 minutes.

Once I had been shaving for about 2 weeks and had the pattern down, I am now in the porcelain throne room for about 35 minutes per the stopwatch function on my cell phone. The main reason is that I am taking longer with my shave and not rushing through it becase for the very first time, I look forward to and enjoy the experience!

Hell, I even take my morning coffee and vape in with me as it is no longer a chore it is something I enjoy!

I've been using a DE razor for a couple of years now, and I've been using a mug & brush to make shaving cream for over a decade. I was satisfied with the shave quality of multi blade razors but the prices are out of control. I get a much better shave experience with DE razors, if for no other reason than I can cheaply replace the blades at the first sign of them getting dull. I'll never use a multi blade razor again.

AGREED! I also find that by using a DE razor in addition to getting a much better shave, you also get a real sense of accoplishment along with that BBS shave.

Like you I have a thick beard. I've been a DE shaver most of my adult life, the only exception is when I went Grizzly Adams and grew my beard out for 5 years. Since you have thick stubborn whiskers, I'd recommend looking at a heavy duty type razor like a Merkur 34C or 39C. They are a little more expensive than the Parker razors around $35, but they are a bit more aggressive and tend to work well for guys like us with tough, thick whiskers. The other part of the equation is the soap and brush. I like Proraso in the green tub, or Palmolive Original (hard cake soap, or in a tube). A good Badger hair brush is a must for getting the soap under the whiskers and getting them to stand up for shaving. Good luck on your DE shaving quest!

Try "nick shaves " on youtube he goes thru a lot for guys just starting and all price range of blades ,brushes , soaps ,and creams . Good Luck and just take your time when shaving .

Wow thanks for all of the tips, guys! Must really be something to that enthusiasm. I've always hated shaving, so if there's a way to make it an enjoyable experience, I'm all of it. I'll definitely be starting my journey sometime next week, when payday opens my pocketbook. I'm learning a lot just from what's been posted here.

Thanks again, yall.

Have you tried Cremo? I love it as a preshave.

On a somewhat related note, I got my first straight razor and strop for my birthday last night. Have a whack today and only nicked myself once. I consider that a win!
