I tried once before, and completely screwed it up. So, does anyone have any pointers on making coils with ribbon wire? I made this 7.5 inch piece of wire, It's 6x0.8K/40N.

You need some thin (Not wide) painters tape, tape every few inches of wire and remove them when closing in on them, this will insure them to stay straight and squared off while you wrap them.
Pull your Ribbon hard while its on the spool to the amount needed for each piece and then cut them, this makes them straight and easier to work with. Afterwards use a book or some other object with a perfect 90 degree square and stack them then tape them up and putt'rm in the chuck. I normally will take the end for the swivels and fish them through the hook and then bend it then hold the wire with pliers and twist the swivel, insuring a nice tight grip on the swivels so you can pull the wire tight while wrapping it.

Ive learned to hate these builds...they are not as productive as some of the others we've made and more work then most....
This is from another thread, start is at 2:00 and just act as if there are no frames when wrapping it up:

No, I already made the wire. How do I coil it without it getting all twisted while coiling? That's what happened last time I tried this.

I gotcha ya, You need the wire held in a Vise if the wire is vertically spined (The ribbon edges sticking up and down not across) and use a pair of nylon tipped pliers to pull it around a screwdriver/similar, depending on how many ribbon pieces will determine how hard its going to be to wrap it....One of the few reasons I hate ribbon....
You can coil is with the ribbon horizontally MUCH easier...

It's 0.8mm, 6 layers, so horizontal would be best. There's going to be movement from layer to layer as I wrap because the ID will be different by 0.1mm per layer.

Try 4 Layers, You dont need a thick (Top to Bottom) wire unless you just want a high wattage build only, use 3-4 strips instead and it will wrap much easier with less chance of any warping and you will get the same experience as the surface area is what matters....

I'm thinking I should push the wire around the spindle, as opposed to pulling it with pliers. That way the stacks will stay dynamic as they coil.

It will force itself to warp or break, or break what your wrapping it on/with...

What about the 6 layer wire I made? I'm cheap and don't want to waste it.
Your not going to be happy but its like that 3ft wire length I made by hand...2.5 hours of time and I couldnt coil it becuase of it warping and breaking...Use it as a show piece...
Remember its the one on the farthest Left...Did that by hand, mde 3ft worth of it and it couldnt be coiled no matter what...I only have about 4 inches of it left that I keep with all my extra wire pieces as examples of advance wires/coils....

I mean, technically, isn't this just a staple wire?

Yes, yes it is. Usually they are Framed Staples but you dont have the Frames in place, so a Staple it is.

Fuck it, I'm gonna try to wrap it. If I can't, then it's useless anyway.

Well, that sucked.
I fuckin' hate ribbon.
You and me both bud, I did try to warn you though...If you plan on retrying it use 2-4 wraps instead and make it a horizontal layout, then wrap it...you will find that its easier but I am telling you it isnt worth the effort, the build with ribbon is only a show build it isnt as good as the builds we have been doing...thats why you dont see me posting any lately.

.8mm ribbon wire is insanely difficult to wrap, .5 & .3 work a lot better. Also, if you take a few drops of juice and run it down the ribbon, it will help hold it in a nice neat stack :D

I do have to say though, in my opinion, staple coils work some strange wonders. I did a 10 ply .3mm staple for my boss the other day. We both vape the same juice, it brought out so many different aspects of the flavor than my aliens did. It literally tasted like a completely different juice. They tend to bring out more of the crisp, high notes in a juice. I wouldn't give up until you at least nail down one success, they are worth the hassle i think. But i would definitely try a smaller width ribbon

Okay. I've got some 0.5mm, too. Maybe a 4 ply framed staple to start with and see how it goes?

Okay, so I gave it another go today.
6x0.5, framed with 26g, Claptoned with 38g.
Ended up with about 5 inches of usable wire, due to a measuring error. I wanted about 8 inches.

Normally I'm a dual coil kind of a guy. This came in at 0.13Ω. So, no duals for me. BUT...
This thing vapes fantastic all by it's self. Loving both the flavor and the vapor!

So this thing is a juice whore. I decided to re-wick it with a Scottish roll. I wasn't expecting better flavor, just less time having to re-drip. The flavor is now phenomenal!

I think it has alot to due with getting more used to .3 and .4 Ribbon wire, before I would use .5/.6/.8 and that makes almost everything a nightmare to manipulate!
.3R SSFC wraps alot like a 26g Fused Clapton and this is why I started having a better time making them.

I picked up one of these and thought I would push the envelope some more then I did without any magnifacation...now its more about being precise with movements then anything else.

20160901_110519.jpg

This is something I started on but the 48g broke when fusing the rest...This section that is less then a inch long took me over a hour and a half to fuse befoire the fuse wire broke at the spool.

SPECS: 8 x .3R/ 30N80 Frames / 44KD Stagger / 48KD Fuse

I took these pics last night to update some guys in a IG Chat but Ill retake some today in better lighting

The build that I did a couple days ago...was almost perfect..only if I didnt choose to say "fuyck it" when I screwed up that fuse...it would have been flawless.

SPECS: 15 x .3R/30g 316L/40KD/44KD (5 Wraps/3mm ID @ .08 Ohms

Framed Staple Cat Track

I wanted to give this a try after doing the Multicore I did a few weeks ago and seeing how perfect the ramp up was from it. This should give more crevices and smoother ramp up and surface heat. At .09 Ohms Single Coil its a bit low but its a incredible coil for sure. Simple on the outside yet its every bit of beast internally...like a sleeper car.

Tools of the trade (Yes these are the exact tools I used to make my cat tracks) :
