wismec theorem and notched coils

Okay, so Ive had the Wismec Theorem for a few days now, and used it extensively with different coils and settings. My initial review was largely positive, but after using it non stop, here are some of the pro's and con's I think people should be made aware of.

Keep in mind my style of vape is for the most part above 45 watts, and prefer kanthol wire; I also never enjoyed temp control, having used nickel, titanium and SS in the past.

Con's: The notch coil is hugely dissapointing. If you take too long of a drag, and you get dry/burn hits and they are among the nastiest. I initially tried it on a IPVd2, and due to the step down issue, I used it in Joules mode as suggested on this forum to by pass that glitch as a workaround.

I put in in SS Ni and Ti mode at max temp 570 F i believe, and had my joules between 20-40, and the it was great until the unpredicatble dry hits happened. I inspected the notch coil closer, and determined that maybe one of the leads wasn't making proper contact or slightly warped, so I put in the brand new spare notch coil.

Same result, anything above 25 joules at max temp still resulted in dry hits if you take drags longer than a few seconds.

So I took it off, figuring the IPVd2 wasn't really compatible with this tank, and used in on my Smok Cube Mini, and ran it first in temp control, SS mode single coil. I played with the temp from 300 F-max, and again the notch coil gave the dry hits!

On reddit, it looks like MANY people are also getting these dry hits using various methods. So either some of the notch coils are defective, or are only sufficient for those who vape at lower wattages and temps.

I vape straight to lung with long deep inhales until my chest cavity is full of vape. Looks like the notch coil isnt meant for that type of vaping, imo at higher wattages.

Pro's: I ditched the notch coil completely and put in dual vertical claptons, 32/26ga. I have it set at 60 Watts, .37 ohms with power level normal. I'm using the rare Hydrid Creations "Mahalo" ejuice (peanut butter/roasted marshmallow) @6mg Nic, created by the innovative gourmet ejuice alchemist, Chris Ort here locally in Southern California.

Now we're talking! Ramp up time is excellent, it brought out a note/flavor in the juice I hadnt been able to detect for a few years, and was just the right setting for me.

The air flow ring deal is a bit convoluted, but kind of cool I guess for innovation. As long as you grab onto the glass to detatch the top, it comes off and goes it with just enough resistance to let you know its perfectly secure.

Only thing I can say is that though you should screw the tank into the mod relatively snug, over tightening it makes it difficult to unscrew since you need to use the glass as leverage and I can easily see how it can break. But if your tank is empty, you can just remove the glass and use the posts as leverage to remove it.

Overall, its a cool vape product, but what my final verdict compared to the Avocado?

I hate to say it, but since I only got the Avocado to tide me over until the Theorem arrived, I cant help but admit that the Avocado is a better tank all around. I cant quite put my finger on it; maybe its because I get more of an impact with the Avocado wide boar drip tip, but the flavor and vape quality is just better, and not by a narrow margin.

The Theorem may be the coolest looking tank I have ever owned, and it's sleekness and beautifully designed appearance will probably go unmatched for awhile.

I will still use it because of it's "newness" and my love of all things new and gadgety. But overall it did not live up to the hype, but still my second favorite tank aside from the Avocado.

If I lost it today, would I buy it tomorrow? I can certainly live without it, but I am a huge fan/enthusiast and collector, so I would get it again jus to have it. I also have a Vicious Ant AX1 RDA clone which I have only used once that I simply bought based on its sleek futuristic look.

Overall, yes hands down a well made coil is better. But, the rate at which these things heat up for their given resistance and wattage used is pretty damn interesting. Looks like there are kinks to work out (if they can be) but it does have something going for it.

Wrap one up in 42N80 and Im sure it would be a decent vape....
Im guessing your cotton needs to be extremely tight for it to be effective, there are alot of openings on it and cotton strands the are just sitting on the flat edges in the opening and on the outside of the coil will give the dryhits...If it was solid and had louvers or pinholed surface it would perform much better...

I haven't received a dry hit yet with the notch coil but then again I use it in TC mode. I did try it a few times in power mode and it performed fine for me, no dry hit. With a single notch coil and the reducer installed I can't take a deep lung hit though, I would pop an eyeball out if I tried with the tighter airflow. I also trimmed the cotton so that is is about 2 or 3mm from touching the bottom, the way it came nearly the entire bottom section was filled with cotton. I mainly cut the cotton to increase juice capacity and also figured it would wick a lot better.

The tip is useless, replace it and it performs a lot better.

Overall it is an enjoyable tank for me to use but won't replace my favorite sub tanks or RBA, it is a different vape though and the flavor has been great. I could live without the Thorem but at the same time I am happy to have it.

Maybe its me but the notch coil seems way to hot to be so close to your lips
It was like a lit match
I had to make a standard coil

Like I said you have to swap out the dumb ass tip, it is ridiculously small. I use a tip with a delrin base it is farther from the top, this makes a big difference.

I ended up swapping the tip on my Petri clone, it ends up constricting the petri nicely for a better vape, and the petri cap on the Theorem not only looks great on the powersource I have, but also works nicely.

Mine pops alot with my own coil
.99 13 watts :(
Any idea's?
Thanks
Would think because its setup as a subohm tank and you are running it at almost a full ohm. Its wicking way to much juice for what little power you are running through it. I may be wrong and I am sure someone will pop in and correct me if I am :)

I believe Manimal is correct here. When I build higher ohm/lower wattage setups I tend to pack the wick in the coil a bit tighter than I would otherwise. That seems to help with the popping a bit.

If it's just the sound that's bothering you, but the vape is good, then I say embrace the pop and enjoy!

My .02

Notch coils was a complete failure. Dry hits all over. Ive tried several builds, 6 wrap SS clapton and flavor was good with impressive clouds. I tried single 10 wrap 28 gauge kanthal and I didnt enjoy at all, then did dual vertical with 28 gauge kanthal 6 wraps and I didn't enjoy the flavor either. I don't recommend dual verticals because the tank gets way too hot. I got burn from touching it, and this was with 28 gauge, can't imagine dual claptons.

Last was a single 8 wrap 22 gauge kanthal. This thing has given me the most intense flavor yet. When i vape my boreas I want to go back to this tank just because the flavor is so intense. I get less clouds as the clapton build but it compensates with flavor, can still chuck a very decent cloud at 45 watts.

With the pre-installed notch and cotton (cotton trimmed to sit just 2mm off the bottom) I never got a dry hit. I decided to change out my cotton after about a weeks of use and had to do it 3 times until I finally got the wicking right to avoid dry hits. I wasn't expecting the wicking to be this difficult based on the success of the first go around.

If you're an experienced builder than the Notch coil is not necessary, I like it but will try a SS build in my next go around.

Sorry, not impressed with this one. Had high hopes for the notched coil...too hot for that little space. I am not a fan of TC so in wattage mode you can really only go to 25-30 watts on the SS. Still to hot for long pulls. Yes, the drip tip sucks. Put a clapton in and it is okay, but the filling is pita to me. And you are filling often! Overall it the Avocado is a better deal for this type of tank. Just my opinion, and maybe with more fiddling I might find a sweet spot. I'll take the Boreas any day over this.

The Notch coil is OK but wow did I just try a set-up in the Thorem that was the most flavor I have ever tried in any tank. It was at a vape shop and one of the guys there had the Thorem with a dual clapton in parallel with a flat wire wrap on it, huge coil. It was a single coil config and we tried the same juice in a couple different tanks but the Thorem was on another level flavor wise. Now I have to order some flat wire and make that coil myself, I asked if that same coil works to make as much flavor in other tanks but he said it wasn't as good on his Kennedy, the Thorem made all the difference and it was his new favorite tank.

I got a Theorem and have been playing with it while I wait for a 13h9h.

The notch coil is problematic for sure. It heats up instantly and pulls liquid like mad. As someone mentioned above the trick to wicking them is to get the cotton as tight as possible. Then the "toothpick fix" along one edge of the wick to make sure there's air transfer. But even with doing all the finicky steps it can still blast you with a dry, burnt hit. This seems to be a function of the coil heating up almost instantly. I think it may be drying out the fibers close to the coil and stopping the capillary action if you take too long a drag.

That said, I've gotten good at knowing when it's going to get too hot and ultimately I don't dislike the notch coils completely. I just won't be putting any more into it after the stock one burns out or I get tired of it.

Edit: Also, temp control on the notch coil is questionable. It seems to ramp well past the set temp if you let it burn too long. I'm still messing with various W/temp combos (running it on an RX200S at the moment) but it doesn't seem to matter which one I use. That coil just wants to blaze like the sun.

The notification reminded me to break out the Thorem again, this time it went on my new Hohm Wrecker G2. Put the G2 in xXx mode (any metal TC mode) to find the right FSK setting for the notch and settled on 13.5. I was able to vape the remaining juice till the cotton was dry with no dry hits.

The flavor is still not the same as the crazy build I tried at the vape shop, the notch coil is OK but the Thorem really benefits from a better build. I think the Notch is good for people who don't want to build though, just to have something simple to install and not have to fiddle with the coils warming up evenly. I did wind up buying a 5 pack of Notch coils to mess with in my other tanks, couldn't pass up the deal at about $5.50 for a 5 pack shipped.

I really do like the Thorem but wish wicking was easier, you have to fiddle too much to get it right.

Yep. Fiddly. That's accurate. But I agree that once you learn it it's a cool little drip "tank."
