Suggestions for getting mom on the bandwagon?

Not sure if i picked the right category (please do move this otherwise!), but my mother-in-law is finally interested in trying out vaping. I've long since gone pro, so i have no experience with smaller, more newbie-friendly devices. She's looking for something small. I'd like to put something like an APV version of an Ego in her hands, with maybe a Subtank Nano or something with decent performance which can use either prebuilt heads or RYO coils.

The main thing is i want her to have QUALITY, not something which is going to be a massive disappointment or a waste of time, but also something she'll actually use, at least to start off with. I thought about maybe one of the smaller iSticks by eLeaf, but i've had bad experiences with all six of mine (which are brilliant but when they crap out, they really CRAP THE FUCK OUT).

Also: her budget is diminutive. I'd be glad to get her hardware for her, but replacement parts like coil heads and whatnot shouldn't be too prohibitive if possible.

Any suggestions? Preferably from people with experience with similar situations? Thanks!

Hello Jeremy. Has your mother had a try of any of your gear, it might be a good place to start.

I gave her a hit off of my RX200 but it's too big for her. She, of course, wants something a little closer to cigaretteville. As we all do at first.

Good starter kit, inexpensive...http://vapenw.com/istick-pico-kit-by-eleaf

Plus, she could use different attys as you know, even the subtank mini is decent.
Definitely thinking about that one. I'm not sure she'll take to the shape, and i know from experience those eLeaf things are shabby as fuck, even if they are wonderful for the first few months. It's just that when they get a little bit of wear and tear on them, they're like Chevrolets. I want to get her a Toyota.

Hello. Yes we do, but there are better products now. I was more to gauge what type of "draw she likes" e.g tight like a cig or loose like with larger tips. Is throat hit important or not; that type of thing. Another thing to consider is how much does she smoke a day. And a budget for device and e liquid. The more info you can provide the better.

The Ego AIO. Cheap, cheap coils and easy to use and maintain. Had 5 friends that kicked analogs using them and seen countless posts of ECR praising them.

If it were me...I would take her to a B&M to try and find something she likes. For most smokers looking to quit it is of course very important nothing happens to turn them off to vaping. My father's fiance has a PG sensitivity and she was using 80/20 PG/VG juice and she was turned off and went back to smoking. I'm still trying to get her back on vaping with a max VG juice. It's an uphill battle unfortunately. Good luck and I hope your mom is able to get off cigs for good.

The AIO's sell like hotcakes locally. Everyone seems to love them and there seems to be zero problems with them.

Another vote for the AIO. I've had mine now for a couple weeks and couldn't be happier with it. And, for twenty bucks if it takes a dump I'll just order a new one. Win/win

Tossing in a vote for the Pico kit. I understand about the form, but it's really pretty small, coils are readily available, takes more than one kind, easier to clean/maintain. Plus, eventually, she'll get tired of knocking over a stick type.

On another note,..... Where hell you been?? Good to see ya!

OK. Putting this one out there. The Arcus Kit. A MTL stick device (no gizmo's).Above ohm coils and tight draw. Seen on youtube, great for new vaper. Battery life could be a bit light. Price $30

I just wanted to pop back in here and thank youse. I went round to her apartment yesterday and the damned thing worked smashingly. I don't think we saw her smoke at all, and she was even having beers with us. It was her first day using it, and she took to it so well! Now i know what to recommend to other beginners. Those things are terrific!

That's fantastic to hear Jeremy. Make sure to tell her congrats on quitting the stinkies and to stick with it.

Both of her AIOs have died after minimal use. One never really even worked to begin with :( And now i'm broke and between jobs and can't replace them. It worked for a couple weeks anyway!

Tell her she has to commit to the switch from Tobacco.

I'd say that's counter productive in the extreme. Tell her she can play with it. Suggest she play a game with it, just for shits n giggles, to see how many cigarettes she can avoid or postpone, with vaping. When it's fun, one is more motivated, than when it's a chore. Tell her if she really really wants a cigarette, to have one and enjoy it, but don't stop vaping (because after awhile, the taste/smell of smokes gets pretty obnoxious! Don't tell her that, let her figure it out for herself!).

I suggest a nautilus mini tank and any mod of less than 30watts.. Preferably a stick battery........ If she likes it help her pick out a better mod later.

Finding the right juice is more important than the mod when quitting, IMO........ For most adults trying to quit via vaping, Clouds can be counter productive. A smoker doesn't need or want more vapor than a cigarette smokes.

Yep, exactly this -- and this ex-smoker has never changed in that opinion. Tight draw, only as much "cloud" as I used to exhale when it was smoke, except it dissipates faster. The Virginia Tobacco flavor at MyFreedomSmokes tastes astonishingly like Virginia Slims cigarettes, if that's helpful at all.

saw this at a shop eailer http://www.myvaporstore.com/Eleaf-iCare-Kit-p/elis-isca10.htm uses high ohm,m high nic which we all needed when we started and its MTL.

Actually... not all of us needed high levels of nicotine, even at first -- I had to get down to 6mg, in a cigalike, before I could vape regularly. If she's been a light smoker, or smoked ultra-lights, for a long time, this may be the case. It's better to start low, and go up if you need to, than to get nauseous and get turned off to the whole thing -- 18mg and 12mg nearly cured me of vaping completely.

Innokin T18 kit, cheap enough online, form factor close enough to AIO that it won't be a new learning curve.

I started with an eRoll, and if I couldn't have gotten some juice as low as 6mg, I'd still be smoking; no way can I deal with nausea.

Are you sure the AIOs are really dead? I find it highly unlikely that both died after two weeks. I've sold a bunch of them and everyone loves them.

I've only seen a problem with them twice - and it was the same thing. The top cap wasn't fully tightened down. It can be a bit tricky because it has that child proof ring on top so you can turn and turn and turn and it just spins freely. You think it's tight but it's not.

i'm not sure what happened with the one which seemed to work fine for a couple of weeks, but the other one never seemed to charge. It would light up but didn't appear to be charged, even after hours.

My mom is in a similar boat. Helped that I quit along with her, more support/motivation. We tried the cigalikes for awhile, then went to pen style (halo tritons) with clearomizer tanks. They worked ok enough but I got tired of burning wicks or not being able to really clean the wick when changing flavors. I went to an istick 100w and a single coil rba, she's still on the halo pen style.

For whatever reason in the past couple of weeks things have been going south. Some of the tanks no longer want to screw on the battery and act like the thread is stripped out. I offered her my spare batteries for it and that helped with some of the tanks but some still won't tighten down and just spin. Some spin on her batteries but are fine on the ones I gave her. On top of it, the coils are burning out at a ridiculous rate. She replaces with a brand new coil/wick (prepackaged) and by day 2 she gets a burnt taste. Sometimes a coil will be doing fine, she adds juice and bam, coil's dead. 2 days is a far cry from the 7-10 days we were initially getting from new coils.

At this rate it's not only frustrating but costly. It's a bit of an initial outlay but trying to help her transition from the pen style to a somewhat small 18650 mod with a wismec presa 75w tc and pair it with a kayfun v4. Finding a decent mtl tank these days is a bit of a chore depending on a checklist. If you rule out bottom fill (pain in the ass), dl hitting sub ohm's parading as mtl (they're usually not), try to find one that isn't gigantic (don't need 5-6ml capacity) and low price the options quickly diminish.

The 75w mod + rta + 18650 battery comes out to around $60. By comparison though, when her tanks begin leaking or break/crack they usually do so in groups of 3-4 and 3-4 replacement clearo's run around $21-28. A 5 pack of replacement coils/wicks runs around $8-9. I've got a feeling the rebuildable nature will easily pay for itself before too long.

It doesn't make sense to dump a ton of money when on a strict budget on unknown hardware without being sure she'll like it. On the other hand, going too cheap gets expensive from frequent replacements and the dissatisfaction of problems won't help her get off the smokes. A tank with premade coils might be a better option if it means it's easier for her. When trying to transition from smoking, ease of use plays a big factor. It's already a bit stressful if nothing else breaking the habit of tobacco, the last thing someone who's stressed wants/needs is a pain in the ass on top of it. Like a cig, light it and smoke it - smokers likely prefer fill it and vape it (at least in the beginning).

I can't really use my own experience, it was easier for me because cigarettes were making me cough so bad I couldn't hardly hold a conversation or laugh without going into a hacking fit. I welcomed the vaping as a relief. If a smoker isn't having those kind of issues there's not as much incentive.

The set up I use is the Eleaf Pico mod with the Eleaf GS tank, it is a great combo which I have been using for quite some time now. :)

@Huckleberried ia what i call are MTL queen
I vape airy draw (to me, at least) tanks these days, but I do MTL draw, yep. But, my fave tank is a Goblin Mini RTA, using an eVic VTC Mini. I did also like the flavor and ease of build of the Merlin, but never had one that didn't leak, so gave up on those.
