Alternative supplies for coil building?

Just wondering what everyone uses to build coils that might save some money. I bought my mod (ipv5) tank (tfv4) and organic cotton, and getting wire samples from a friend, but i hadnt taken into account things like drill bits and tiny screwdrivers, and feel like im getting Nicked and Dimed to death, lol.

Would a toothpick work to build a coil? Or any other around-the-house materials?

Sure. I've seen where people have cut a strip of a wire hanger to use to wrap a coil around. Most people have the essentials just laying around the house. Nails, drill bits, small screwdrivers, if it's the diameter of the coil you want, it'll work. I think a toothpick might be too small, but i've heard of people using them.

Also... Harbor Freight.

Drillbits are good because that way you know what the actual inner diameter is, which is important with steam-engine.org. Drillbits are cheap!

I've been looking at drill bits, if I go that route I'll probably buy some little rods of wood (or one with a rubber stopper) and glue them in place like a headless screwdriver to make them easier to handle. Do I need a set, or do people usually just use one (3mm for example)?

Not sure how others do it; I find it's best to stick to one size, so that once you get the exactly perfect amount of wicking down pat -- the hardest part of the whole endeavor! -- it never changes. I find that perfect size to be 3/32, which I think is about 2.38mm or something like that. I can't find metric drillbits at HomeDepot, unless I buy a whole set, which I don't need. I just took a 3/32 drillbit from one of my husband's sets. :giggle:

Just wondering, do you guys think this is a good buy?

Coil set

It's 6.75 with free ship.
Lots of people really like the jigs, I've heard you can get some perfect wraps with them. I've really not used one, so can't fairly say, but why I like wrapping on this kind of screwdriver, is multi-use. I've used every single one of them for wrapping coils, using for screws on the decks, tweaking wicking, etc...

I think you'd be happy with either for coiling, though.

So I might have everything I need now.. Yay!

I have needle nose pliers, nail clippers, wire, cotton, box on its way, and tank, batteries, wire, and charger if my friend ever comes through. Also the local vape shop has a RDA for $5 I might try out.

Walmart has a "Precision Screwdriver" set for $2 and the drivers are labeled in millimeters....I used to use them as a jig.

Nail clippers from the dollar store work for cutting wire, Thread nippers on ebay for $3 (BEST cotton clippers), and thats about all you need..

I suggest you check out clones on Fasttech and 3FVape (Be sure to use epacket shipping and make sure its in stock when ordering!!). Clones have come a long way and many are dead on in quality..

I like 2.5mm I'd coils.... I use a home made version of the Artistic Wire Coil Gizmo. Google it. I use a wire coat hanger for 2.5mm. A BBQ skewer for 3 mm and a 10 speed be spoke for 2mm. Total cost zero.

When we got to Spain for the winter last year I discovered that I'd forgotten to pack my coil building mandrel - Rhona gave me one of her old 2mm crochet hooks - did the job just fine and it'll be coming back on duty there come October!
