Storing nicotine

Ok i've just received 10x100ml 50/50 48mg brown glas nicotine bottles.

They had a bit of air in them. I opened them all up and filled 8 bottles ot the top leaving as little air as possible.

Then i was left with 8 full bottles, 1 empty bottle, and one bottle filled 2/3th.

I just threw 1 full bottle in the deep freezer at -20 celcius for testing.

It should not crystalise/freeze, thus not break the brown glas bottle.

If all is well i plan to put the rest in the freezer too.

Did i do this right? Any other suggestions for long term storage?

Sounds good to me, that's how I store mine, except for the "working" bottle. Though I've never checked the actual temp of my freezer.

Sounds right to me too, though I have no clue what "-20 celsius" means. My freezer is set to 0F, and no, the bottles of nicotine don't freeze, it just becomes thicker -- the ones that are 100% PG are still pourable; the ones that are 80% PG/20% VG have to sit out for a while before they can be used.

And above all, mark the bottles clearly as to their contents (even the PG/VG ratio if any of them are different), and the date they went into the freezer, because months/years down the road, you won't remember. :)

I keep the one I'm currently using in the fridge, so it's mostly protected from light, unless I'm actually mixing. Even though the fridge is opened more than the freezer, it's still dark in there most of the time. I guess. I'm pretty sure that light does go out when it's closed. :giggle:

Oh, one little tip: since eventually you will be using those bottles, and PG/VG makes ink run, I always mark the labels I put on the bottles with pencil -- it can stand up to drips of PG/VG without running, smearing, or disappearing.

Exactly as I store my NIC. I just put mine in a clear ziplock bag first, that way *IF* anything were to happen to the glass bottle it will hopefully stay contained in the ziplock bag.

I just used google to "convert -20 celcius to fahrenheit" (thats the actual google command)

The answer was -4F. and -18c = ~0F.

My freezer is between -18c and -20c :)

Ziplock bags, CHECK! got them.. will use them too :) thanks for the tip:)

I like high vg liquids so normally i buy 100% VG nic but since i bought this for long time storage i thought i'd get some PG in there, should help protect it from microbes. Besides its easier to use anyway and i can still get it to about 70% VG i think. Best of both worlds for me it seems.

I think i buy another lot of this. According to my calculations this batch makes 12 to 16 litres of 4 an 3 mg liquids.. that will last me about 3 years at 15ml a day. But i have family members that want some too and some take as much as 18mg... So i guess i need to stock up some more.

easier and cheaper to use 100mg nic, and you can easily get to 70%vg eliquid using 100%pg nic

yes its harder to find though. i found it on one site but i dont know the brand and the site doesnt look too profesional. at least this nic is great for sure. besides ive read that storing less mg nicotine in bottles overtime stays more fresh than higher content as more nic is in suspension. the free nicotine molecules are in most danger of going bad, those that are disolved in the pg are safe.

Actually... storing nic in dark glass, in a freezer, keeps it so extremely stable for so long, that a higher mg is a better idea; that way, if in 10-ish yrs or whatever long length of time, it loses say 5%-10% of its potency, you will still have 90-95mg nicotine. If you store it at lower mg, then what remains may not be strong enough to make a great deal, and it also takes a great deal more room to store. I have 3-ish liters of 100mg nic in my freezer, which I estimate should last me 25-30 yrs. If I had stored it weaker, I'd have to buy a whole new freezer!

Ok per your advice i just ordered 2 litres of 100mg in 100% PG. (had to choose 100%vg or pg, no 50/50 option).

I choose PG because its better for storage i believe.

So that means i have 200000 + 48000=248000 mg of nic, divided by 4mg/ml=62 litres of vape fuel, divided by 15ml a day, = 4133 days / 11 years of e-liquid.

So between now and 11 years i need to find a good moment to quit vaping.

I think i can relax now.

Yes, I think so. :) How long have you been a vaper/non-smoker? I think you'll find, over time, without any real effort on your part, that you just naturally vape less. When I first started, first got a Kayfun (RBA), I was vaping 10ml a day very easily. When I got an Achilles RDA, somehow I got down to about 5-6ml per day, without any effort at all, even though I reduced my nic level. Now, I'm at just a hair over 3mg (I think it's about 3.2 or 3.1mg, can't recall what my last mix was), and I'm still at 5-6ml most days, but there are some days when I doubt I vape even 4ml, not because I make any effort, but just... don't think of it as much.

I can't really explain it; I smoked for 39 yrs, have been a vaper for not quite 3 yrs, a non-smoker for not quite 2.5 yrs, but it seems that the compulsion is just gradually easing, the longer I'm off cigarettes -- which in itself was a bloody miracle. :) It doesn't happen suddenly, but after the physical addiction to cigarettes is gone (the MAOIs, the full tobacco-alkaloid cocktail+the rapid delivery of nicotine to the brain), then the mental "addiction" just very gradually eases.

I doubt I'll ever stop vaping entirely -- due to both senile dementia and Alzheimers in my gene pool (both grandmothers), I'll continue using 3mg nicotine, but it does seem that my regular, all-the-time vaping may ease off to something that's more like "social vaping" -- i.e., more occasional than regular.

To those storing nic in glass bottles in the freezer, do your best to use good bottles. They will break in the freezer. Even though it may not freeze solid and change state, a small amount of expansion occurs. I have had 2 bottles (about 5% in number) break on me, in another plastic container, not being moved or disturbed. Since the bottle is in another container the leaks were contained and easily cleaned up. I won't use the nic liquid however, since it had lots of small glass particles in it.

Or maybe there was an earthquake and I slept through it?????

I got about a gallon and a half of 100mg VG nic and I stored it all at 0 degrees F in 4 ounce glass boston round bottles with polycone caps. I filled the bottles right to the top so that a bit of nic actually oozed out when the caps were closed; this way, all air is removed from the bottles. It is my understanding that the VG nic I have stored contains zero water so there should be zero expansion. Some of my oldest nic is now over 3 years old. No shattered bottles. Best of all, this old nic is every bit as colorless as it was in December 2013, so proper cold storage DOES prevent oxidation.

It is all in the basement in a dedicated nicotine freezer, far away from food and people. I only keep 6mg base upstairs. -Works for me. :)

Right, It will contract slightly, not expand, when frozen.
Just be sure when you open it, the room temperature is about the same, as it was when you bottled it. Otherwise it may overflow, if the room temp is warmer.

I can't help it. I was drunk! I meant contraction. Thanks for settin' my brain straight.

Liquid won't compress and glass doesn't flex much. Completely full warm bottles sealed and placed in the freezer have substantial pressure changes inside the bottle. Likewise, cold bottles sealed and then warmed will experience expansion, breaking a sealed bottle or overflowing the open bottle.

Have a nice day.

Now i might have made a mistake.

I got two glass 1 litre bottles with 100mg nic in PG, not entirely filled to the brim.

I contemplated diluting it with extra PG, but opted to fill one bottle with the other, and then change the other bottle over into 120ml PE bottles and fill those to the brim for storage.

Halway through i remembered someone saying that PE, not even HDPE, is porous. And flavors from other stuff inside the freezer can enter the PE and vica versa.

How much merrit does this have regarding storing nicotine for 10 years in PE ?

Opinions? Should i order new glass bottles especially for this?

Regards,
Trail.

I would be far more concerned with the PE breaking down and infiltrating the nic, over 10 yrs' time. Or, the nic losing potency very quickly, or oxidizing and turning dark and tasting bad, if stored that long in PE. It should be in glass, period. The only way I'd store any nic in any plastic is if I was going to use it all up inside 30 days.

I have received 20x100ml and 20x 250ml brown glass bottles :)

They sent me 20 caps and forgot 20 other type caps, i dunno i've mailed them, will probably receive more caps soon.

For now i can keep the nic safe in the 100ml bottles :)

Will be using the 250ml bottles to store my vape fuel as I like to experiment and put seperately steeped single flavors in there and mix them up inside my tank and find nice receipes the easy way.

Btw currently vaping:
Vanilla Custard V2 10%
Strawberry FA 5%
Forrest Fruit FA 5%
Meringue FA 5%
These percentages are seperately steeped, not recipe percentages.

If i had to guestimate the receipt it is something like:
2% Forrest Fruit
1.5% Strawberry
1 % Meringue
2.5% Vanilla Custard

Jus say'n.... just happened to throw this combo in my tank from different seperately steeped bottles.. and its not bad at all :)

Doing the mixing this way has several benefits for me
1) i always vape something new, so i don't get bored.
2) i dont waste flavoring because of some bad mix.
3) i can experiment and fine-tune final mixes easily.
4) seperate steeping seems to have some benefits in flavor.
