What's the longest you've gone between recoil jobs?

I've got this crazy coil-and wick setup that just won't give up: it's been going strong for 5 weeks now, with at least 8 hours a day of heavy usage. It's gone through 9 or 10 dry-burns too. And on top of that, it's thin 34-ga kanthal, not heavy-duty sub-ohm wire!

The coils are all messed up, unbalanced, half the loops don't even fire no more, and the wicks are all blackened and frayed, but the whole thing keeps on working and tasting great. Beats all you never saw...

What's the longest you've had a setup going for?

I had an Imist Atomizer last over 6months. Not rebuildable but coil can be cleaned and dry burned very easily (i would do it every 3-4 days).
upload_2014-10-20_13-5-26.png

With my rebuildables, I think I've gone about a month with a fogger (not even changing wicks)

Typically, I re-wick and dry burn every week. Coils seem to last forever (until I just decide to re-do them)

Usually about a month with 32 gauge wire dry burning every 12ml of liquid and putting in new wick while I am messing with it.

I am sure about that. I do not dry burn my coils. Never saw the need in that as they are never clogged or dirty.

I m a cloud chaser so most of my builds are parallel 24g or 26g like the one in the pic...this build has lasted about 9 weeks now..I've changed cotton only when I change flavors, and that's after vaping about 50 ml of the same flavor.. After checking on the meter what the ohms read , in this case .15, I fire up the new build on my BFM and use a pair of tweezers to squeeze the micro coil to eliminate gaps, and make the coil uniform and straight... I then install the cotton, drip it good (without the top cap) and pulse the switch while blowing cool air on the coils to eliminate that new cotton taste.. When satisfied all is good I re-drip again, replace the cap and take my first hit, which usually is awesome!!
I also re-drip often to never let my wicks get dry enough to burn or cause that funky taste..when I change flavors I pull out the old cotton and wash the deck with the coils still installed under hot tap water along with top cap and drip tip.
For safety I then check ohm reading again and if it's still .15 then repeat firing the coils up making sure they turn red from the center-out and re-squeeze with the tweezers again if needed.. then re-wick, juice up and enjoy.. I think my parallel coils will last until I decide to take them out and that could be a very, very long time..9 weeks so far..

Most of mine have been on 6 months or more. If one of mine fails, its normally because I inadvertantly hit it or jiggle it loose from the screws. This is true on my drippers, Kayfuns and Taifuns. I use 28 Guage and normally run a 1.0 to 1.2 ohm coil, but I only vape at around 3.5 to 3.7 volts.
I guess I am one of those "indefinite" guys.... :D

I have 4 test Drippers I use for testing DIY juice... (used alot and many dry burns just to get the flavor off to put a new piece of cotton in it) Believe it or not, all but one have been on there since last Christmas. These are just simple Tridents with single 1.0 ohm coils on them as well.

I am constantly ruining perfectly functional coils just to make another one , i'm never satisfied . When i was new to coil wrapping i would wrap new ones all freaking day long lol , nowadays i mostly dry burn and re wick so i would say a week or two before i get obsessed again with making another.

Sometimes i am physically incapable of wrapping a new coil because i lose my grip on the end of the wire when i am cutting to length and i get completely entangled in it, hate when that happens.

Have had the same coils in my tugboat for about four months now. Even through heavy use, 7 to 10 mls daily. They still read 0.25 like the day I built them. 24ga by the way. I rewick and dry burn daily.

Into 5th week on my original Orchid build (dual 28 gauge mini coils @ .8 ohm) and still going strong. At most a half dozen re-wicks and dry burn cleanings.

Good thread question. Was wondering myself... :)

What's the story on the dry burn? Is this just to clean the coil?

Yeah, it burns any built up residue off. Im on month 7 with my kayfun, its what my adv is in so it gets around 10 mls a day through it. im gonna run it till the damn thing stops lol :D

Yeah, you basically burn away the crud that's accumulated on the coil. If you have a cotton wick, you replace the wick as well, obviously.

You probably replace your coils often enough that they never have time to get dirty :)

Believe me, some times when my atty has been acting up for a while and I haven't had time to do something about it, and I expose the coils to finally dry-burn them, they're so caked in crusty soot that I don't even see the coils anymore - just two small lumps of coal. When they're that far, it can take a quarter of a charge of a 18650 to get them clean again (but then, I use silica wicks, so it takes longer).

I like the idea of the kayfun build, I've got the nautilis and kanger protank 3 coils can be pricey. In my local shops theyre 5 for 20$....

Damn... I was a carto tank man myself and i got tired of always spending money on them. After getting the kayfun build and wicking down, i havent looked back. Just make sure you get a high end one if you go clone. IMO and experiences, EHpro is the way to go on them, quality is superb.

I don't keep track. I have some builds that have been on for at least a month ATM. When I re-wick, if it has hot spots or is just too gunked up, or the ohms have wandered a bit, I'll re coil. I'm lazy, so if it's not burning wick, and looks good when dry burning, it stays put.

Well I spoke too fast. One of my coils broke. I now find myself rebuilding my Big Dripper on the road - well, in a bar in Brussels. Needless to say, half the - passably inebriated - patrons in the bar are staring at me, wondering wtf I'm doing with my tweezers and my nail clippers :)

Yeah, probably a bit strange looking in a bar, lol. Good thing you had your kit with you to build.

I always carry 4 pre-built coils, extra lengths of silica rope and kanthal in case that's not enough, a hex wrench, a small screwdriver, nail clippers and a pair of tweezer in my mod's case. That way I'm never stranded. It's a bit of a pain to rebuild away from home, but then I'm on the road so often for my work that I'd better be prepared.

I drive for a living, but I'm never too far from home, or for too long a time. I just bring two full kayfuns, a mod with a fresh battery, and sometimes one extra battery. Hasn't failed me yet, but I have so much kanthal, and so many little screwdrivers that I probably should leave a set in my car... Why not.

I have gone 2 months on a Kayfun coil. It was fine when I took it out to try something different.
Yeah, I build my kayfuns all to 1.2 usually, and 2 months is reasonable. I even dropped the deck of one recent one when rebuilding, and the coil was so damn perfect, I straightened it, re attached the leads, and it was perfect. It's still going strong and getting vaped right now, lol. That's lazy, but hey, it's a damn good coil, and why change a good thing?

With a Kayfun build i always use 28 gauge as it seems to last and last and Kayfun's got to be completely dismantled to mess with the coil anyway , it's biggest drawback .

I have noticed that i don't have to re wick nearly as often with Rayon than i do with cotton , Rayon biggest plus imo , seems to last and last and last with very little wear .

I don't think it's superior to cotton for taste (too close to call) but it's definitely no worse and it's long lasting properties give it the edge imo.

I agree 100% on the rayon, except ive noticed a difference in flavor. I was using organic cotton balls before and I could taste the cotton, with rayon its very clean tasting. But it lasts ALONG time, and the capillary action of it is quick compared to cotton IMO.

That is true , i just don't think the difference is night and day and vastly superior like some do is what i was saying , by the hype i was expecting a vastly increased taste advantage but it's pretty darn close to me.

@VH fan I think it all comes down to the taste is subjective thing, Ive heard some people hate it. Its definitely something people should try when they get a chance but not rush out and buy blindly.

I didn't count but I had a dual coil in a dripper for months I want to say at least 3 months. I changed it because i was giong on a trip and didn't want it to break on me and have to rebuild a coil at disneyland. but my current kayfun in the short time I have owned it has go through at least for rebuilds. it's the mounting screws that get me. I can't stand them. I hope my 3.1 i'm getting will make it better.

What's wrong with them?

Me, what gets me is atomizers with side holes in the posts, and set screws on top pressing down on the wire. These posts are fine with heavier gauge wire, but with the hair-thin kanthal I use, there's a fine balance between achieving a good electrical contact when tightening the screws and shearing off the leads...

i use twisted 26G kanthal and it makes it difficult to tighten down the screws and not have the wire just pop out the sides. so the side mounting will be better and I'll just have the coil legs go up and over the intake hole.

Hi Eric
I had the same problem in my RDA's but solved it by going to the zenith with the slotted posts..it makes installing all size wires a breeze, including the twisted 26g

Just curious what build popped?

from Droid Maxx using Tapatalk

Just a 32 gauge 6/7 wrap coil on a KFL+. It was about 3 weeks old when the damn thing popped as I was getting ready to leave the house so I was kinda forced to make a new one quick. I prefer to take my time with builds.

I think most of us asked for help at some point when we were starting out and if it wasn't for others knowing what they were doing i'd still be completely lost (still am lost much of the time actually).

I stay away from the 32 gauge , that stuff breaks if you look at it the wrong way.

You stay away from 32 gauge because you can :) If you need high ohm coils that don't have too many loops, you need to up the gauge. Ain't no way around it.

Me, I use 34 gauge wire coils in my dual-coil setups. Believe me, a bead of sweat always runs down my forehead when I tighten the post screws: that stuff is so fragile... But I have to use it, else each coil would have 12 turn and would take forever to warm up in 32 ga.

I'm still going strong on my bubblegum tank and my butterscotch tank. The butterscotch needs a re wick for sure, though. I've had to tighten the airflow big time in order to prevent after burn. I'm gonna do some big time re wicking and building this weekend.

Got new juice coming tomorrow, so I'm trying to stop re filling my kayfuns and drain em. I just am fucking lazy lately, and habitually feel the need to re fill, lol. Now that I have six kayfuns, I don't really have to change flavors up, so it's definitely made me lazy. I've also stocked up on batteries, so now I tend to have three mods at home in front of me, and just randomly grab a different flavor. Must rebuild this weekend! Must chain vape some tanks dry prior!

yea remove cotton and burn excess shit from coil.... i like to drip a couple drops of water on mine while dry burn definatly flakes all the junk off quik... i go a couple weeks dry burn cleaning every couple days.
