THE BRAIDED WIRE EXPERIMENT

OK, folks... get out your roll of 26AWG Kanthal and cut off three pieces 6-8" long (length depends on your fingers' manual dexterity). Twist one end slightly and use a C-clamp to hold it on the edge of the dining room table. Manually (no tools used) braid the three wires the same way you would if turning your daughter's pony tail into a loose braid. Twist off the end so nothing comes undone. Using a 3mm wrap pin, make five contiguous wraps. Insert into the OBS Engine Nano and snug up close to the pins so it doesn't short on the chimney. Snug down the screws and cut off the excess. It comes out as 0.31 Ohms on the test unit and 0.33 Ohms when fired in that tank.

Lannie says it has instant flavor; no ramp-up time required like the factory Claptons. The cloud is smaller than normal, but the flavor is not. She is using rayon for wicking. She says, at least at this point in time, that she really likes it. I'll let her give any future updates.

Next version will be to try the braiding using baby vice grips to make the braid tighter. Will give a report on that after it happens.

Love braided coils!!!! I prefer them tight and with 28AWG doubled over on itself no twisting. I dont have a proper clamp so I have to do them at a local B&M that has a full on build station. For this reason I've been using single wire for a while now...but you have inspired me and I will be heading over to wind some up very soon.

Sounds cool. Never tried a braided coil.

I think I'm going to try this but with 32g wire and use 4 wires, braid 2 wires with the other two, make some dual coils, off the top of my head I bet that would work out to about 0.25, 0.3 ohm.

I'm always up for trying something different, I'm after a bit less cloud for my holiday but obviously still want the flavor. Hmm

EDIT I think I've just described a fish tail braid and yup, went looking and people have made those coils..

Sounds interesting. Never gone that small...but also never tried braiding 4. In dual mode I can't imagine small clouds coming off that much wire but then again you are running extra thin wire. Love to hear how it turns out.

I'm going to make some fish tail coils but I imagine trying to braid 32g wire is going to be a pain in the butt, it's going to be so easy to snap that wire but anything higher is going to ohm out too low and that sort of defeats the object.

Of course, single coil you could go lower gauge.

I will make some this week coming and report back.....

@Draconigena Now look what you've started LOL

I think it's totally going to work out but exactly like you said 32 is going to be tricky to work with. I've snapped 28s while braiding before(my fault I was way too rough with it). I also completely agree that anything higher for the way you plan to run it would definitely ohm out too low. On 3 strand braided 28s the highest I've ever gotten out of duals was .35, I think it was like 6wraps on a 3mm ID and it was a long coil.

Another cool thing to do with braided is to hammer them out flat once they're all braided but(obviously) before wrapping them into coils. Almost like having used ribbon but without having to use fucking ribbon lol. I was told that this should only be done if you have ano ultrasonic cleaner which I don't so I've never tried it but it earned a pretty good review from the guy who suggested it.

Yeah with that gauge wire, they is no point trying to fight with the wire, has to be done slowly, although, once the 4 wires are clamped down, your braiding two at a time which may give it a little more strength, we shall see.
Just had to order some more 32g as I used the last on my fused claptons, I will make some on Tuesday.........or fail......either way, I needed some more 32g anyways.

One thing I have no idea about is what wattage I will be able to run those coils at, I've never made coils just using 32g wire before.

It'll be higher than you'd expect. Strength in the braids will raise the heat capacity quite a bit. My guess will be mid to high 40s possibly even 50s...just a guess though

32g should be easy to hammer flat as it's pretty soft, I bet you could flatten it in a vice too.. Flattening coils like that gives more surface area for the juice to vaporize and adds to flavor..

I also flatten my fused claptons using an electric drill and smooth toothless pliers, do about 30 or so runs down the wire. You don't need an ultrasonic cleaner, well I have never used one, just a good rinse under the tap should do it.

I don't mind that, more battery life, my fused claptons in dual setup love about 65w. Again though, flattened out should mean I will need more wattage right?

I do have one concern with those coils and that's hot spots, I have a feeling, getting them to glow evenly is going to be a bitch, I could be wrong though..

Possibly. Wouldn't be entirely sure because I've never gone flattened(too chicken shit to try it without the cleaner lol).

From my experience Heat capacity and heat flux only change when the mass of the coil changes not the shape so theoretically my guess would be that it would need around the same wattage as if it wasn't flattened. But in practice I wouldn't know. You've got more experience there than I do.

Not when it comes to things like that really, I'm not tech savy with vaping, I build a coil and vape it haha.. Emily is always braiding hair, maybe she can have a go too, not as heavy handed either.......well........in fact, no, I ain't going there today

@Rixsta When it comes to the math and science, I'm a total self taught nerd. That said, being taught by someone who doesn't have a degree, I can often find myself being dead wrong about some things.

Are you talking about the one Rich made for me, or the 4-strand braid you want to make? Mine was looking kinda gnarly when I first fired it (like a mess of branches that were trying to catch fire, LOL!), so I ran the tweezers down it a few times and when I fired it again, it glowed perfectly, all even and from the center out. So I wicked it. :)

I started out at 40W initially because that's where I had the clapton set, but I felt the flavor could be a little better, even, so I tweaked it up to 41, then 42, and 42 seems to be the sweet spot on this. Only 2 extra watts, but there are more clouds now, too. I'd say it's probably the same cloudiness as the clapton, and just a hair less flavor, if my memory serves. When I get my other Nano tanks, I can try a side-by-side with the same juice and see which one actually tastes better, but right now I'm thinking it's pretty close.

Rich did SUCH a good job on the braiding! I don't think my crampy fingers would have been able to manage it, but he's trying to think of a way to make it easier, and a tighter braid, so we'll see. At least it would give me a purpose for this spool of 26g wire I have sitting around that I never use anymore. Well, I think I use it on one tank (Aromamizer) that has dual coils, but it could easily take 24g. I only use 26 because that's the gauge coils that were in it when it was piffed to me. I figured why change it? (I've changed the COILS, just used the same parameters. ;))

With all the twists and turns in braided coils the wires do tend to short out a bit at first while they settle in. I usually put fresh batteries in a regulated mod and pulse them gently before running my tweezers over them.

Wait until you try the tight braids! Personally I love em.

I think he was talking about the 4 braided ones. I think there is better flavor to be had than Claptons personally, not sure what though ha.

Rixy, I think you have made a mistake, you can't braid with 4 wires, you would need 6.

Now 6x32g would be great, two in the middle and the two sets of outer ones and braid like that.

Now that would give about 0.25ohm in dual according to my working out.

Trust me on this one :)

Your absolutely right !

That's going to be very hard to make those, keeping those two wires together in the centre while you braid them. You would have to wrap some tape around them at the bottom to keep them together, geez, we'll be vaping the whole reel soon lol.

Now I'm definitely going to bed lol

How come? I have braided leather with four, six, eight strands and it worked fine. Is there a reason why it wouldn't work with wire? Just curious...

Maybe that's why I don't get it... I would braid all four, not have the center two stay steady. And with three, the center one is not straight with the outside two winding around it - they all curve around each other equally. So, theoretically, so should four, five, etc. What am I missing?

You could do it that way but that's not a fish tail coil which is what I want to try. Doing your way is just a normal plat, Emily does Aimee's hair all the time so I have seen them a lot but never thought of making a coil like that until your post..

the trick to getting them to glow evenly is not to pinch and squeeze them, but to "strum" them with a point tipped tool.

as for hammering out the braid...you can get the same effect by loose twisting 3 strands, then hammering. less work, same result...just an fyi.
But, one thing that will deffinitely make your life easier is a jewelers block. I picked one up for around $8 at Hobby Lobby.

Not a single scratch on it, disassembles it and now getting it ready to turn it into chrome.......and no, I'm not sanding it down like some idiots do on Youtube LOL

Morning Rixy!

lol before ya know it, Rixy is gonna be french braiding with wires!

Id love to live on my own island and never wear clothes again.
meeeeeee tooooooooo but I'd have to be on an island alone, cuz I'd skeer the hell outta people if I wuz nekkid around other folks! :p

Well it is in the UK today.....so Happy Mother's day to all the yummy mummy's xxxxxxxxxxxx
oh that's kewl! Welp, I missed it, but Happy Mother's Day belated to all the UK mamas. So glad you and your kids have Emmy!

What's up Wompers? I've seen a lot of you folks over at the 'dark' side ... just thought I'd say Hi!
Howdy Haze!

It was worth it.
awwwwwwww that was just too sweet!

Me too! After all I gotta look my best when I walk my daughter down the aisle next month, gotta make sure I fit in that tux, so I have started on the seafood diet.
oh how wonderful! Best wishes to her and her new hubby to be! Kind of a bittersweet time for the parents though. You're happy for em, but kinda hard to see em being so grown up. Was for me anyhow.

Morning..........and a big old Yeehaw to you all..
dunno how all the yeehaw started, but now yur startin to sound like a Texan! Love it!

I did find a new apartment as this lease will be up in a few months. Also on the Upper West Side, not with great views, but it's one of those classic prewar buildings that in NY are known for large rooms and high ceilings. Kitchen and baths are all new so all the comforts with a lot more room for the money. And not far from where I am now, but on Broadway, which on the UWS is where all the shopping is located, so no treks to the store in subfreezing weather. I'm also close to an express stop for the subway, so easy to get around. I think this will be my last move for a while, as I really hate the hassle.
that's so great hun! Hate that you have to move again, but hope you'll be super happy in your new place and can stay put for a long time!

You put two holes in your Naan bread for eyes, took your belt off and used it to keep the bread in place on your face, stood on the chair and asked everyone if they wanted to have their picture taken with Super Nan.
omggggggg lmao...... @Rixsta you gotta lay off the booze darlin! :D

I use 30 ml bottles for trying out new mixes,
same here. I need some more 250 ml bottles, mine all have nic in em and are in my freezer which is still at my sil's house. For the juices I really like, I like to make 250 mls, but then I have to make 120 mls of some, cuz of a lack of bottles. But 30 mls to try a new one. I don't know if I really like it til I've vaped quite a bit of it. I may like it right off, but then get sick of it. If I go through 30 mls and still like it a lot, I know I can do a much larger bottle next time. If I don't like it, meh......maybe it cost me 1.00 to 1.50 at the most, so no biggie if I give it to someone or it goes down the drain.

All the wire supplier I know of have "Vape" or "Ecig" as part of their name and I am afraid if I order from them and they use their company name on the return address label, the package might be confiscated. Anyone know of a supplier (other than FT) that is good, reasonably priced, and has a name like... oh... XYZ Wire Company?
someone beat me to it, but I'd totally go with Temco. Their prices are higher than say lightning vapes for 100 ft. but check out the 250 feet prices. I got two sizes, and one was like 30 cents more for 250 feet than for 100 feet, and the other was a little less than 1.00 more. So I got 250 feet of both 26 and 28g. Plus I like knowing it's made in the US. Not some kind of chineseum wire.

I love my sister very much but can't be a part of her life while she is like this, not only for my relationship but also because of the children, I hope she can sort herself out and find peace, the underlying problem was never about us, it was always deeper than that, I hope she can get some help.
Really hope she gets herself together, and at some point y'all can have a wonderful relationship. <3

@Debadoo she loved the pic and said "That is very nice of your friend"
awwwwwww glad she liked it. And glad she had a wonderful day. My gd just had her 8th bday. they were gonna do it at a park, but then it was supposed to rain a lot that day. So they moved it to the skating rink. OMggggggggg my dil totally lost her mind......the charge for 19 kids was like 250.00 or 260.00 and she thought that was cheap. Then she gave em a 50.00 tip, not to mention what they spent on decorations, favors for the kids........ and the presents they bought. A desk and a bike. I'm sure they spent at least 500.00 to 600.00 they don't have that kind of money. That was a huge chunk of their tax refund, and the kitchen sink is still backed up. Neither one of em is being smart with money. Drives me crazy, but I can't do nuttin about it. There's been two student loans and now a tax refund, and the sink still aint fixed.:xD:

I have hated being away so much, miss all y'all a ton. It is really difficult for me to get online in the cave where the puter usually is.......plus I've been super busy trying to keep up with the new puppy. Right now the coffee table has been moved cuz of the sleepover after the party, so it was easy to bring the puter out to the living room. But this post has taken forever to do cuz of the puppy being so rambunctious. Both dogs are now passed out on the couch, so I was able to finish catching up and post. for the most part the boys are getting along pretty good, cept for the puppy always trying to steal whatever toy Frankie is playing with.

For me, I have a sleep study to do Friday during the day. It was scheduled for a night time one tomorrow on Wed, but right now I'm up all night and going to be around 10 am. so I rescheduled it for a daytime one. The doc at the pain clinic is going to burn the nerves in 3 places in my lower spine on the right side. They say that lasts usually about 8 months, but could be anywhere from 6 mo's to a year before it has to be done again. I think that will be on April 6th, but gotta check and make sure. After that, we'll see how the left side is doing. It hurts too, but the right side screams the loudest. Once the right side is taken care of, I'm sure I'll be able to tell more about how much the left side is hurting, and where exactly. So may have to burn some nerves on that side too.

April 7th is Ozzy's next vet appt, and we're gonna do the DNA test to see what kind of breeds he's made up of. So far I'm sure he's part bunny rabbit and part pop tart lol I am pretty sure there is some doxie in him, and we're all thinking there is some pit bull in him......but we'll see. The results take 2 weeks. They were supposed to do it on the last appt but my son forgot. Later on we'll do it for Frankie too. See what is in there besides Westie.

Hope I can be on some when y'all wake up. Really miss all y'all. I didn't really know Hank, but that is so horrible to die so young. My heart goes out to his family!

@Debadoo ......High Five Debs, ain't gonna get me nekkid either darlin x

And yeah, I've not drank since, it's good let your hair down though once in a while..

Braided coils, I don't like them and I know why, it's nothing to do with the coils themselves, I did manage to do one, pretty easy and the flavor was good but that instant ramp up is what I can't stand, same with single wire.. I've been vaping fused Claptons for way to long and that's my niche now. I like the longer ramp up, although I use NI80 with SS so it ramps up quicker but that's the way I enjoy vaping...

Got the Tesla steampunk mods in today and I LOVE that mod so much, it's right up my street, I like busy mods, love the fire button placement and the weight, strangely doesn't bother me at all.. I'm def bringing one home today y'all........
